PITBULL! I received a Pit/Boxer mix from via third party to a rescue. I hadn't done any research regarding the breed nor dealing with a somewhat grown up dog prior to getting her. When I did I soon realized she had no training whatsoever. She was very high energy and stubborn. She wanted to eat my cats, she took me for walks instead of the other way around, she inappropriately greeted people (jumping on them). She basically had no training. Tim and his team were noting shirt of amazing with me dog and me. She challenged Tim but he was up for it and thought out of the box to get her on a path of stability, confidence, obedience and generally a much happier dog at the end. I went to every session meaning, group walks, group socials and I asked him tons of questions along the way. He was super informative and super supportive. It was nothing short of a miracle of what he accomplished. For example: when he brought her home he walked her by a house that she would normally go crazy over that had three small dogs and she would completely lose it going by that house. He walked her past the house off leash and all she did was focus on him the entire time they were walking by they even stopped in front of the house and she still focused on him. He told me once that training the dogs was actually not that difficult but the difficult part was translating that to the owners so that they would keep it up, that stuck with me. Tim and his team did such an incredible job with our boy Jax (3 yr old pit bull). Jax had an incident back in December where he bit the groomer and the staff at the vet within the same month. I came upon Redefined after checking Google and asking around on local social media pages after adopting a very anxious 120 lb Great Dane. After an eval he also exhibited fear of men. A few weeks of in home lessons, social classes, social walks, and homework that was given to me to practice at home my pup is a whole new dog. Fast forward a few years later and we continue to attend the maintenance classes. I've volunteered to walk rescue pups and have learned a lot about how to ensure that my dog doesn't regress. He now willingly walks up to men to greet them with out fear. He's more confident and I am often compliments on how well behaved my dog is. Welp this is extremely concerning. I was at the park with a friend and noticed the van park and two workers take out 4 dogs. Two dogs were then placed back inside the van in a crate and two were taken out on a walk. It is 74 degrees out, but the van was left in the sun and we all know that cars get hotter inside. The workers left the door open, but that does not change the fact that the van was left in the sun with unattended dogs. Oh boy, when you have some bad dogs, Tim is the go-to-guy. Okay, here goes ... I have bad dogs. (Yes, first step is recognizing you have a problem.) My Chihuahua has serious aggression problems. (He hates everyone but me.) My other dog wants to bum rush any other dog that he sees. Training wasn't an option for me--it was necessary. (Serious note: Dog owners do have a responsibility to make sure that their dogs are safe around other people.) I had 8 private lessons with him a few years ago, and I'll have a referesher lesson every now and then. Also, he has a pack walk through downtown Belmont Shore every week and a dog social every week (like a dog park but a trainer is there to prevent dog fights). Fast-forward a few years, I have excellent dogs. The Chihuahua still has his moments, but I know how to correct the behavior efficiently now. My mutt is a star. Both dogs know how to heel, sit, stay, come, etc. My mutt even knows German! I can walk him off-leash, and when I tell him to "foos" (heel), he does it perfectly. The training can be pricy (considering that I have two dogs), but it's worth it if you want your dogs around the public. Also, the correction has a lot to do about timing. You have to correct the behavior at the right moment so that the dog gets it. Pinch and e-collars may be used, but don't freak out and go forming a picket line. Best.Trainers.Ever. Seriously. This small business knows their stuff. No fluffy treat laden training here. These folks are the real deal. I have a Pit Husky mix, female, that I brought to them after trying out 3 other trainers. Mae Belle is stubborn, pushy, busy, sweet, smart, and thinks she's the hall monitor. Tim and Anna came to my home with one of Anna's Mallinois and spent almost 2 hours assessing my girl. Mae Belle spent 3 weeks at in-kennel training and came home a completely different dog. That was 2 years ago and she's still going strong. I get many compliments on her obedience as I take her almost everywhere (she is my service dog) and folks are impressed with her good manners and low key temperament. When I am unable to take her with me, I board her with RDT and she loves spending time there. She's well taken care of and it shows when I pick her up after being away. These guys are the real deal. We have a dog, a rescue, a manchester terrier that we have struggled with for over 4 years. They made her do a complete 180. Nothing short of a miracle. We have tried nearly all forms of training under the sun, including different private trainer approaches to curb her aggression and anti-socialness when meeting anything not human. We tried the positive re-enforcement, food feeding only during training, water bottle, general leash training, abandonment/recall training.toy rewards etc...and just tried one on one with our neighbors to take her on walks with other dogs. She used to react from over 50ft away, and would not stop until we gave up 2hrs later and left. Nothing really worked, it helped bring it to a plateau but she would still lash out at anything not human if she came within 10-20ft. Any normal family probably would have taken her back to the shelter and given up as she was absolutely in need of a very high level, and skill set, of dog training skills beyond anything most people are willing to endure. We found Tim and his group on 2nd st In Belmont Shores one Sunday, we noticed immediately that nearly half the dogs they had with them were in muzzles(and of breeds most associate with aggressiveness) and not 1 of them was acting up(20 dogs). They were nearly 100% obedient and docile, this floored us since most "trainers" wont really work with aggressive dogs(let alone an entire pack)...or say they will but produce no results beyond the typical sit, stay, roll over type stuff. We did a bit of searching and were a little concerned about the only negative review we found against him, so we asked him about it. He was very forthcoming and explained the situation, look there is always going to be an understood risk when you send an aggressive/troubled dog to high levels of socialization training(flooding of any sort) where they come in contact with other dogs. It sounded like a situation blown way out of proportion, so we chose to proceed. Best decision we ever made for our dog. This has got to be the best dog training bar none that you can get for the prices they charge. Being a disabled Veteran they even gave me a special rate, hows that for supporting your troops. It was a level of immersive training we could have never provided for our dog. I can literally walk my dog near the dog beach now off leash and have her come to me when called(this was a thing of dreams 1month ago), she still has follow up work to be done to get her to off leash on the beach..but its very close. I can now approach any dog with her and be in complete control, maybe 1 correction to remind her and she is right back to meet and greet the way dogs are supposed too(again an impossible task 1 month ago). What was the main thing they did different, lots of things, the big difference we had never ever considered...the pinch collar and electronic collar(which they had to use maybe once or twice). We always considered the pinch collar a mean thing to use, until we realized how effective it was as a training tool. I love my dog, but it is far crueler to have her go through her life and not able to socialize with any other dog than it is to give her a correction or two so that she can act like a normal dog. She is so so so much more balanced now, and such a calm animal as compared to before she was a mess. To an untrained person the pinch collars(spiked inside) seem cruel and mean...when correcting the dog they will yelp....again to an untrained eye it comes across as neglect. What many people don't realize is that some dogs will only respond to this form of training to get them to a place where more mellow training can take place. The alternative for many of the dogs tim trains, and nearly half at any given time are non-adoptable dogs from the kill shelters that they help make adoptable,. is that those dogs would be put down. Now ask yourself what is the best solution...kid gloves non effective training...dog is put down....or appropriate levels of training with some very strict and harsh punishments and the dog lives out a normal life after. These guys love dogs, and they will adjust the training as needed to get your dog where it needs to be. This review has been a long time coming. I've known Tim for over 16 years as that's how long he's been training my dogs. 16 years ago when we adopted our first rescue, I never thought I'd need the help of a dog trainer. Until we rescued a Korean Jindo who was a fairly rare breed here in the U.S. Unknown to my family and I, Jindos are known as the "pit bulls" of Korea in not the most flattering way. At 5 months old, my dog was friendly with our family but was a bad nipper who never listened, didn't care if he was in trouble, and was also very dog aggressive. I called around to several dog trainers and when I mentioned what type of dog I had, they all responded negatively with the same answer of "we will only train your dog if he has a muzzle on. He will need to be on a muzzle for life." I can understand why some owners are open to this however what happens if my dog got loose or out of the house without a muzzle on? Then what?? I called Tim and he was friendly and open to coming and meeting my dog. It was the first time Tim had worked with a Jindo and Tim was willing to take on the challenge without a muzzle. In fact, Tim rarely or pretty much never uses muzzles on his dogs. It defeats the whole purpose of obedience. I hired Tim for 6 life changing sessions with my dog. These were private lessons which wasn't cheap but to be honest, for the 14 years my dog was alive, it was like barely paying anything for each year of his life. Tim would work with us for an hour and teach us a new command each week. It was heel, sit, down, stay, come, and off leash work. I never thought that in a few months that my dog would learn to be obedient and listen to me off leash. It was a miracle! But not really -- it was a lot of hard work which my family and I put in the time after each session with Tim. It was more about repetition than long practice sessions. But we owe it all to Tim. He was patient, calm, funny, and intuitive. I've never seen someone have such a connection with animals. And I admit, my dog was the type to try and challenge Tim to the point he tried to even bite and attack Tim but Tim didn't give up. He was determined to help us have our dog become a real loving member of our family. From then sparked our family's friendship with Tim and over the next 15 years, he trained our German Shepherd and helped me title her, also trained my cousin's goldendoodles, and several of my friends' dogs. We got so into training that my current German Shepherd is training in French Ringsport with Tim. But regardless if you are wanting to compete with your dog, break some of your dog's bad habits, or get some dog obedience -- Tim is without doubt, the best dog trainer on the planet. I say this because he's a good person with more integrity than anyone I've ever met. He's also one of the few that help rehabilitate aggressive dogs that no other dog trainer would take on. He's always up for a challenge but he cares most about the dog become a loving and safe member of the family. There's few people that I trust my dog with and Tim is the only one I feel comfortable with leaving my dogs with. I own both small dogs and large breed dogs and Tim has the most natural, special ability with all of them. I found Tim and Redefined Dog Training over 8 years ago when I was in need of help with my French Ring Sport dogs. After my amazing results I decided to intern with him to further my own dog training knowledge. During my internship I watched so many "Last Chance" dogs become reliable companions for thier families. I would recommend Tim to anyone wanting to improve thier dog in any way. * I'd also like to address a couple reviews on here for what it's worth. One of the below reviewers states that he took off with money and never gave lessons. I personally attended 2 of these scheduled lessons. It also says that his assistants change. I have not written too many reviews on yelp but I feel this this one is VERY important. I am going to keep the review short but please feel free to contact me with any questions. I enrolled my puppy in a 4-week training program at Redefined Dog Training located in Bellflower, CA. I paid the owner, Tim, $2,500 cash at pick-up and was assured that my puppy was in good hands. Little did I know what was really going on at the facility. At 3 weeks I was invited to a group walk and was shocked, upset, and angry at the condition of my dog. I decided that I was going to terminate his training early due to animal endangerment. After pick-up I emailed Tim Welch with my concerns: 1. Food was only ¼ used when it was measured out perfectly for 4 weeks. 2. My puppy lost almost 4 pounds, ¼ of his body weight 3. The fur on the front of his neck was/is gone 4. Jax's neck is all cut up, scabbed, and now scarred and still missing all of the fur 5. He was in a crate, for the night, in an unsupervised, detached, soundproof room at 7:45 PM 6. Anna was extremely rude when I arrived to pick up my dog 7. Tim does not return phone calls or emails 8. Jax was filthy, smelled like urine, and was ravishingly hungry. 9. I was stuck with a $208 vet bill for treatment of Jax's neck I tried to contact Tim many times; I received one phone call back that ended up nowhere. Tim is very argumentative, defensive, and would not address my concerns. I hired a lawyer to try to come to a mutual agreement, since I am owed money for services not provided, with not return contact. We had interviewed multiple trainers and it was clear from the very first evaluation Tim and Anna had a way with dogs. We enrolled on the spot in the board and train. Tim also offers group walks 2x a week, which we drive and hour and half for each way, because we get so much out of it. Tim is untrustworthy and unethical! Take a look at his track record. . . . he keeps moving so not to be tracked down, easily. There's a reason Tim doesn't have an address listed anywhere on his site. We hired Tim to train our dog, at his facility. Two days into our dogs stay, there was an "injury" and our dog was returned to us. We spent $8,000.00 in vet bills to repair the "injury" and had to take Tim to small claims court, as he refused to give us a refund. Judge awarded us the case and we've had to keep tracking him down and bringing him back into court to fulfill the judgement. To date, he has not paid us a penny. This court case has now had five days in front of the judge, spanning 3+ years. This court case was awarded to us in 2009. Yesterday, he was a "no-show" to our hearing. Now, the courts have issued a bench warrant. In my opinion, every business owner has an obligation to demonstrate good business ethics. When something goes wrong (and it does happen) the proper thing to do is "man up" and take care of it in a positive manner. Tim has never actually trained my dog. I called for help with my German Shepherd service dog to manage her dog reactivity. She is not aggressive but pays too much attention to other dogs and not to my needs. He came over and charged me $150 to evaluate her. I should not have paid that money because I was the one that should've been evaluating him. Anyway he said he needed to take her for 4 to 5 weeks and that he would be able to get her in a few weeks on Jan 21st. I didn't hear from him so I called on the 21st and did not hear back until the 25th. It was during that lull that I decided I was not going to work with him. Firstly, I never got a human when I called the office - had to wait for a call back and secondly, if he had my dog and didn't call me back for 4 days, I would be beside myself. When he did return my call, he left no message about picking her up anytime soon. That bothered me, too, because I have a schedule as well. I also did not understand why a talented trainer would need so much time to work on a minor problem. She worked with another dog trainer and in two sessions, the problem was minimized a great deal. Anyway I returned his call and left a message saying I was going to work with her a bit by myself on obedience issues before I did anything else. No Call Back. I realized it's either about the money that he wanted to keep her for so long or he's not a good trainer. I cannot tell you which it is. You decide. A good dog trainer would not need 4 - 5 weeks to solve a dog reactivity problem. A humble dog trainer would not charge $150 to evaluate a dog. He/She would recognize that it is the dog handler doing the evaluation of the trainer and not the other way around. I'm sorry I wasted that $ and I'm disappointed. I wanted to believe he cared about me and my dog. However when he never called me back to discuss my decision and future individual training sessions, I had to question if trusting him was a bad idea. read more

I rescued two orphaned pitties at 4 days old. Both my mom and my boys were attacked by two dogs when they were adolescents. They started having serious fear/aggression issues with each other immediately after the attack and things got scary fast. Because of their breed most trainers didn't want to touch them. After interviewing the handful of trainers that would, Tim was neither the closest, nor the cheapest, but I had met three others prior to meeting him and made the decision right away he was who we were looking for. He left our initial meeting with my dogs-in-toe. We opted (with RDT's recommendation) to do the board and train program. The separation was difficult but truly one of the best decisions I've ever made. Tim and the entire Redefined dog training crew kept my family together, and have brought so much happiness and confidence into our lives. A year ago, I had the most ill- mannered, unsociable, disobedient and leash- reactive Boxer girl who jumped on other dogs either as way to initiate play or just to dominate. Today, she is an altogether different dog thanks to Redefined Dog Training's (RDT) well- rounded program. We started working with Tim Welch and his awesome staff of trainers for 12 weeks in basic and advanced obedience training and saw a noticeable change in my dog's behavior within the first week. After we completed our sessions, we continued to take part in RDT's pack walk and K9 Socials which are great. The program allows our dogs to socialize in a very controlled and safe environment ( unlike the dog park where my dog was attacked when she was 7 months old). All of RDT's trainers are knowledgeable and always so helpful whenever I have a question. The training is no nonsense and it has also taught me to be a better handler. My dog's leash reactivity is still there but not quite as intense, I now know how to manage and handle it when or if my dog reacts. My wife, Laura and I, Steven, have been together for twenty one plus years and have never had a dog. Laura was hammering me for a dog for almost all those years and I held out until Laura became so persistent I gave in. We travel and are never home so a dog did not fit into out life. At least that is what I thought. Two years ago we brought home Sadie, our Cavalier King Charles. Well, you can guess what happened: my life changed. I love this little girl so much it is sick. She told us about Dyan Wallen who is affiliated with Redefined Dog Training and said she was amazing and changed her life with her dog. We called Dyan and had her come over our house for a greet and meet. We were having issues with Sadie. She was major pulling on the leash, chasing after birds and wanting to run and introduce herself to every dog. Dyan took Sadie for a month and when she returned she was like a new dog. I was worried her personality would change but she was the same wonderful little girl as when she left. Sadie is doing so well and we have Dyan to thank. She now is also watching Sadie when we vacation and overnighters when we have things going on. I do not know what we would do without Dyan. She has the key and code to our house, our dog, and we love her. Please call Dyan for training, she is the best. Your dog will love her. Redefined Dog Training saved my dog's life! My dog Boris was rescued from a high kill shelter on his final day by some amazing people who fought very hard to save his life. He was picked up from the streets, labeled human aggressive and could not be seen by the public. Sachi Animal Rescue stepped up to save his life, but they needed help - they needed an experienced trainer. Tim Welch of Redefined Dog Training (RDT) came highly recommended to them. The RDT Team has been a part of Boris's rescue and rehabilitation from the moment he received his second chance at life! Tim even accompanied Sachi to the shelter to evaluate and save Boris on his "breakout day". Boris left with Tim that day and after 6 weeks of working with the RDT crew, Boris was ready for a home of his own. I was lucky enough to adopt this amazing dog. The work that RDT did with Boris is remarkable, and what is even better about their Team is how much they care about him and his success. After I was approved to adopt by the Rescue, Tim insisted on being a part of Boris's adoption screening process. He brought Boris to my home, introduced him to us and my other dog and welcomed us to come to Boris's classes - all before I officially adopted him. The Redefined Dog Trainers worked side-by-side with Sachi Animal Rescue to make sure they found the best fit for Boris to have a wonderful life. And they did not stop there. RDT did follow up private training with us to ensure Boris's transition into his new life went smoothly. The greatest part is we are still actively involved to this day. As part of his training and socialization, we attend weekly pack walks and weekly dog socials. Boris and I have the opportunity to interact with all kinds of different dogs and people and the RDT trainers are always on hand to ensure all goes smoothly. When I need advice, they are friendly and knowledgeable and they make it fun! So I can't really address this company's dog training ability since Tim missed two consecutive appointments that were each scheduled at least a week in advance. The first time my wife had made the appointment and I was unclear whether it was at 9 or 10 a.m., But made sure I was available from 9 a.m. on. However, unbeknownst to me, either the day before or earlier that morning she sent Tim a text confirming a 10 a.m. appointment for that day. For some reason after having received my wife's text Tim called the house and when I answered he was unsure whether the appointment was for 9 or 10. I wasn't sure and my wife was out walking the dogs. I told him I thought it was for 9, but did not know for sure. It appeared that Tim had made another appointment that morning near us that was in conflict with our appointment. My wife contacted him shortly thereafter when she got home and he decided to cancel and reschedule for the following Thursday at 10 a.m. I think he had double booked. That following Thursday was today. At 10:10 a.m. my wife texted him to find out when he'd be here and after not hearing back from him she called him at 10:20 a.m. Turns out he forgot about our appointment. I can't work with someone that unorganized who I can't count on to keep his appointments. After having taken a look at his other reviews - many of which are one star - its probably best that this happened, as otherwise we may have been talked into signing up for a multi-session program that many reviewers appear to believe was a mistake. BEST trainer out there. The price may seem high, but it's the best value out there. I started off only wanting to do the basic obedience but I was so happy with the results that I went back for more and did advanced obedience. I never for a second regretted spending the money on the training. I called a handful of dog trainers and RDT was by far the best phone consultation out of them all. Dyan was knowledgable and very helpful. She answered all of my dog behavior questions and helped me work through what training option would be good for my family. My dog is a 80 pound six year old blu nosed pit who was never properly trained and had bad manners. He also began showing signs of increased aggression after my husband and I hired a different trainer one year prior. Our first step was to meet Tim at the weekly Dog Social. It was great to see what some of the training would be like and to ask real time questions. Next Tim met with us in our home to better understand the dog, us and the environment. We opted for the Focused Training, which means our dog stays with RDT for roughly four weeks. The challenges of training our dog were explained to us and what we should expect throughout and at the end of the training. During the time away from home, Tim and team worked on all of the things we discussed. Two weeks into the training my husband and I began training with them. So not only does RDT train the dog, but the owners as well. After the boarding time, Tim came to our house to work directly on the things we found challenging once our dog came home. We have the weekly Dog Walks in Long Beach as a continued resource available to us, if we feel the need for a little extra help for our dog. In addition we have kenneled our dog with Tim, which is a great option to have. The result of the training has been wonderful. Tim and his team of trainers are fantastic and very knowledgable. Tim and the Redefined crew saved my dog! Before I found them I had gotten to the point where just going outside with her was awful. I would cross the street for other dogs and she would still bark and pull causing a scene. I would NEVER take anywhere for fear of what would happen. She was a year old when I got her and whatever damage had been done was more than I could handle. I went through at least 4 other trainers none of whom was helping me. Her behavior was still awful. Then someone referred me to Tim. He gave her the foundation and positive experiences she needed to settle down and now she is a different dog! We go everywhere together. She is well behaved and socially acceptable and when she does act up (because she is still a dog) I know how to handle it. Redefined saved my dog! read more

She has been a wonderful addition to our family and the easiest dog to train since all we had to do was reinforce the excellent work by Tim and his staff. BEWARE OF THIS TRAINER I paid Redefined Dog Training $2300 to train my dog, and my dog bit someone while with the company owner, Tim Welch. The company had no insurance, and I was sued. I had to defend myself against a lawsuit and pay a judgment of over $1000. The company now refuses to reimburse me, even though they were at fault. Hiring Redefined Dog Training was a HUGE mistake. read more

My husband and I have 3 dogs whom are all rescues. The smaller two are both chihuahua/terrier mixes and were not trained. We worked with Roxann Nydell and she was fabulous! Over the years, we have sent several people with "problem dogs" to Tim for training. He has always done a great job with not just the dogs but teaching the owners as well. He is mentally tough to be able to handle the dogs that most trainers wouldn't touch. He has a very good understanding on how a dog's mind works. If someone calls from either OC or LA County looking for help with their dog I have no reservations in referring him again. I struggled with this review because overall my dog came home with significantly better manners than he left with and his anxiety around other dogs and people is much less. So in that regard the 6 weeks he was gone was successful. However the first four weeks he was gone I had no communication on his progress outside of 2 or 3 fifteen second videos on FB. After 4 weeks of silence and none replied messages to Tim, I reached out to Dyan and had a reply a few days later which consisted of your dog is ready but we have to train you now. This made sense, however due to scheduling restraints it took two additional weeks to get my dog back. He was approx 17lbs when he left and is now 11lbs. He left with a leash, a measuring cup and food. Came back with none. Apparently his food had run out, again no communication, so now he has nasty diarrhea. The trainer who I communicated with the last two weeks was very nice, but she was only introduced as a point of contact during my training phase. I do not know how the experience was for my dog. Overall I found dealing with this company to be very frustrating, mostly due to what appears to be a lack of organization and communication. read more

We volunteer for a large local dog rescue, so we've met and used a number of the popular trainers. But when our dog, with a long history of behavior problems we had been unable to solve took it to the next level, we were in trouble. A friend from another rescue recommended Tim as an answer to my desperate plea. When we first met- I knew he could help save my girl. He understood her problem, fear, and had a plan to address it. Not just dominance, which hadn't worked, but true desensitization. We have a long way to go, but Tim and the training staff are with us all the way. I consider them friends.
