I worked at Dunkin Donuts through college. I made over 400 dozen donuts during a weekday shift - plus millions of Munchkins, dozens of French Croullers, coffee rolls, cinnamon twists, and eclairs. They sold for $1.99 a bakers dozen. So if you will trust that I know a good donut when I eat one, please enjoy this review. Personally, after working as a donut baker for five years, I never wanted to eat another donut in my life. Reds changed my mind. Too much glaze, frosting and sugar for my taste - especially now I'm a senior citizen - but it flakes off pretty easily and Red's makes an excellent donut. $1.99 a dozen days are sadly long gone. Stopped in on a Saturday morning and there were already quite a few donuts sold out, but the ones we got were yummy. I had the coconut donut, hubby snagged a jelly filled and glazed twist and my dad got a maple bar. Prices were reasonable and the employees helping us were super friendly. Not much space inside to eat (maybe 6-8 bar stools), so I'd say it's more of a "grab-and-go" type place. Would definitely stop in again (or try their main location) if we are in the area - but maybe shoot for earlier than 10am next time. read more

Donuts tasted stale, as if left over from the day before and/or fried with rancid oil. They taste way different than the donuts I'm accustomed to in Texas. Also, they are small for what you pay. The shop is very outdated and dirty looking. Lastly, lady behind the counter isn't very friendly (smart mouth when questions asked and not very warm). You MUST try their donuts. I love them in all their gloriously simple deliciousness. When I feel like grabbing donuts for the office (or just myself), this is where I go; always a hit with everyone. They're open early, service is quick and friendly, and they have great deals depending on the day of the week. Small donut shop in downtown Monterey. We were lucked out finding parking out in the front of the shop. This place constantly has a flow of customer walking in as soon as someone walks out. The price is decent too. We ordered a few just to try. Two vanilla custards, one Raspberry filled, sugar donut and an apple fritter. The were so good. Too bad it was not hot. I'm sure they made it it at 6am! They ones with fillings were filled with custards. Loved it. And the sugar donut was not too sweet. The perfect softness and chewiness. And the regular coffee was perfect with donuts and especially for the price. They don't charge you for ridiculous price as the other coffee shop. read more

I spent less than two minutes inside. This was my only stop on the morning of my departure. I was in a hurry to get back to San Francisco in time to return to work. The donut case is right there in front of you as soon as you walk in the door. The selections are pretty basic. I didn't notice anything really fancy among the selections. The gentleman behind the counter was friendly. I asked for a glazed twist, paid the man a buck and I was on my way. Very small shop with 8 counterseats. This place has counter service, which I haven't seen in a donut shop in a long time. Very nice people who work here. Waitress always finishes a question with "hon". Tempted to order the huge apple fritter, but my inner voice prevailed, so I ordered a glazed old fashioned and glazed raised. Pretty decent donuts, the raised was light and airy, the old fashioned had a nice crunchy crust under the sugar glaze. Disclaimer Alert: I've only been here once and even though my review doesn't look like a positive one, I'm still going to give them an extra star. So, here's my review... We found this place while vacationing in Monterey. Location was ideal since it's only a few blocks from our hotel and near our breakfast destination. I thought that the selection was scarce and my donut (Maple Cruller) wasn't fresh. But here's the scoop, we arrived sometime after 9 AM. For a lot of donut shops, especially the good ones, after 9 AM is a bit late if you are looking for a huge selection. I also didn't eat my donut until hours later, which might explain the freshness, or lack of. The only reason I even mentioned that there wasn't much of a selection and that my donut wasn't fresh is because I've been to plenty of donut shops after 9 AM and still got a fresh selection. But I understand and willing to give Red's another shot if I'm in the area. PS: I walked into Red's twice the morning we grabbed our donuts. I thought service was just okay on our first visit, but superb on my second one. Go figure. read more

Strolled around Alvarado street on warm bright, Sunday morning, knew that Red's Donuts was here somewhere. Found it, several locals were hangin at the bar drinking coffee and chatting with the waitress. She approached, smiling and friendly. I ordered a Maple Bar and a buttermilk donut. Do I love donuts? No, not really. But OH how I love Red's! I love it so much that if I lived on the Peninsula, I would surely have to move up a pant size or two almost immediately. It's just THAT quaint, nostalgic, comforting and deliciously yummy! It's located on ever-busy Alvarado but you would never know it once you step inside and (seemingly) step back in time. It has "local institution" written all over it in the most charming ways. The counter service makes mingling with everyone a near necessity. If you don't like friendly people chatting with you over your donut and coffee, then perhaps you should find another spot. Old heads from the Central Coast who order the chocolate raised will know the difference. There is definitely a change in flavor and density of the donuts and no consistency. One week the bread is dense, next its fluffy. One week the chocolate topping is too sweet, next week it borders on Ghirardelli dark. IMO, I believe they just say the word "maple" over the maple bars because they taste nothing but sugar. Best time to buy: 4 to 6 a.m. fresh and starting to settle. It's a nice empty drive to Seaside. Wow! These donuts aren't greasy at all and truly taste homemade! They are fluffy and hearty! I enjoyed the chocolate custard bar which was like a less expensive eclair!
