If you run the numbers on the highest-rated ice cream stores across the U.S., Reeds is ranked a staggering 12th! Theoretically, it should be life changing! But we've discovered that locals in Boise tend to overrate all of their eateries. And Reeds is no exception. Despite an average customer rating of 4.76 on all platforms, the ice cream isn't nearly as good as its competition on that list (for instance, Ehlers in Louisville some 1,900 miles away will simply blow your mind). Now don't get me wrong. The flavors are clever, the taste is delicious, and the butter pecan and maple are both very good. And I greatly respect a creamery that's bold enough to make the nearly-impossible-to-find licorice ice cream! But the product just doesn't strike you as a top 15 ice cream spot. I do love the cheeses and milk offered in the refrigerated section. And believe me, you'll enjoy Reeds. Just don't expect anything 10 levels above Baskin Robbins. read more

I have had Reed's Dairy on my list for awhile, and only recently ended up moving minutes away from them, so I'm happy to share that I finally gave them a try, and I'm sooooo glad I did!!! I was looking for milkshakes, but once I stepped in, ice cream was hard to resist. One of my favorite ice creams, since I was a kid, is Butter Pecan (aka Pralines and cream), but I rarely find it these days, and when I do, it's usually too sweet. Not this time! I was so excited they had it, and proceeded to try a sample of it, and it was absolutely perfect!! Rich, creamy, and perfectly sweet, with a touch of crunch. I also took home some Strawberry Cheesecake, which was also delectable. My husband's favorite ice cream is.....wait for it.....black licorice. Nobody carries this flavor....for years, he has gone without. I'm NOT a fan of black licorice, but I know some are, so I will tell you that Reed's does have it if you got a hankerin' for it, and according to my husband, it's really good, however, I cannot say, as I will not try it. All in all, this place will be a go-to for us for ice cream, but we also have yet to try their cheeses!!! read more

Living in Pittsburgh, PA I don't get out to Boise near as often as I'd like. However, when I come you can be sure that I will be stopping into Reed's to pickup chocolate milk ASAP! My wife introduced me to Reed's on a trip to Rexburg many years ago and I'm a convert! The potato flakes make it so creamy and nice! I've been known to freeze some and pack it in a checked bag home too... Service is usually pretty friendly and quick and the ambiance of this store is fine. It's a little minimalistic with not a lot of indoor seating, but there is outdoor seating for when the weather is warm which is probably pretty nice. read more

They offer plenty of options in many sizes along with other dairy products (we picked up some cheese curds which are to die for!). We had the huckleberry, the bubble gum, and a brownie caramel combo that should be illegal! We have enjoyed Reed's Dairy home delivery for several years, yet found the delivery costs and surcharges to be more than the excellent product was worth. After we notified the Boise operation that we wanted to close our account, we were notified that an "audit" of the records would necessitate a $4.54 charge. No accounting was provided, no indication as to when this error on Reed's Dairy occurred, just a charge. What poor business practices. I cannot endorse your company and am appalled that this is the way your firm parts ways with clients. Been here a few times now and the jury is out we love it! Great local ice cream shop with great employees. The staff is always super friendly. The ice cream selection is outstanding and you can truly taste the difference in the homemade quality of theirs. Inside is typical ice cream shop with lots of tables to sit at and every time is always very clean. They have several locations throughout the Treasure Valley this one just so happens to be the one we have most frequented. They also have other things besides homemade ice cream. They sell their milk and my favorite their chocolate milk is amazing! Plus cheeses and other dairy selections. First time visiting this location! I was first introduced to reeds dairy chocolate milk when I was in school in eastern Idaho. This chocolate milk got me through college! Haha! I have been known to shout it from the rooftops that reeds chocolate milk is delicious and no other chocolate milk can even compete. My brother in law hadn't ever had it, so I got him a half gallon and he is now sold! Haha! I now live in PA and I have been known to freeze several small bottles and then put it in a bag and bring it home in my checked bag to enjoy when I get home. This time I didn't check a bag and couldn't bring some home. Truly devastating. During my 10 day visit at home, my husband and I drank two gallons worth. No regrets. For those of you unfamiliar with eastern Idaho, Reed's dairy is a bright light of glorious, lactose paradise that gives variety to a frozen potato wonderland. The original location is in Idaho Falls. I didn't realize that they had a satellite location in Boise, and was very pleasantly surprised by them popping up on my radar. Same great ice cream, friendly staff, and they had a chance inside the store to win a year supply of ice cream if you guessed how many candies were in a jar. Totally worth it. If you're not feeling strong, sweet tooth, there, grilled cheese is to die for. Don't forget to check out their cheese curds as well as their chocolate milk. This ice cream is so good that on a recent business trip, I purchased a cooler full of dry ice to bring back a gallon to my desperate pregnant wife. The urban myth is that the ice cream is so tasty and creamy because they use potato flakes. What could be more Idahoan than that?? read more

Reed's Dairy is a staple from my childhood. The flagship store is in the town where I grew up and I spent my summers hanging on their front lawn, counting out my change so I could buy a kid's size cone for under $1. When they opened up stores in the Treasure Valley, it felt like kismet that this was the place I settled. (Though I miss the cow smell and pricing of the original) I recently went to the new Lake Hazel location and have no real new information to add. Clean and bright with an army of smiling high schoolers to scoop your ice cream. My favorite flavors are still Gorilla Munch, Licorice, Peach Cobbler and Apple Pie (which might be discontinued because I haven't seen it for years). You can get a few variations of grilled cheese sandwich combos. You also absolutely must try the chocolate milk and cheese curds. It will rock your world. On a personal note, I got a waffle size cone with the intention of sharing with my one year old but she would NOT share with me. So...maybe get everyone their own cone. :-/ read more

I grew up across the original Reed's Dairy in Idaho Falls, and have always loved their ice cream! Hands down the best I have ever had. My biggest problem with Reed's is the serving size of their scoops. They are either directly related to the generosity and/or strength of the individual serving you, or or they are instructed to give modest sized scoops and SOMETIMES I get someone who feels charitable. For as much as it costs, dang ... make it worth it! As far as customer service goes, it really depends on who you get. I feel for the most part it's usually a bunch of teens who don't excel in social skills. I don't want a Dutch Bros experience, but at least sort of act like you care that I am there. But don't be fooled thinking that you're getting a home grown natural product when they add ingredients like red 40 to strawberry ice cream. I hate giving bad reviews especially for local businesses but we need our local farmers and establishments to DO BETTER. I've always wanted to try the Potato Flake Chocolate Milk from Reeds Dairy and I finally had the chance during my road trip! Tbh, I don't like chocolate milk so I was hoping that the potato flakes would change my opinion -- and it really did. The potato flakes provide a creamy texture that makes the drink so much more satisfying. You can also feel bits of potato flakes, which I liked. The flavor of the chocolate milk was less sweet but still very rich. Making the drink really addicting! Didn't try the Ice Cream but I wish I did. Located in a plaza, it was easy to find parking. This place is incredible! Not only was it my first time trying Reed's Dairy products, but this is the new location that is dangerously close to my house . My husband had the grasshopper ice cream that was his absolute favorite. The mint was perfect with the Oreo cookie and the caramel swirl. I had a kids scoop of the huckleberry ice cream on a cake cone. It was incredible. You can tell that the ice cream is fresh and made with real ingredients. I am looking forward to our next trip there to try a grilled cheese as well (it's a weakness of mine). If you are in a hurry, they do have ice cream ready for pick up in an open freezer with multiple flavor options available. Aside from ice cream milk and cheese products are also ready for pickup.
