We went in to look for a decent size tank, our second tank for the corner of our living room and we found a nice corner 50 gallon tank and we just finished getting it all up after a week of staining the stand and canopy. You'll find the help here is very knowledgeable and helpful. We had Jay help us with getting all the right stuff for our second tank and now we are enjoying the relaxing calming feeling you get when you look upon a well put together tank. This is not a cheap hobby if you want a great looking fish tank so if you go cheap you get a cheap look so do it up right and you'll be glad you did. Finally got to check out the fish here and they have a neat selection of fish. I've been looking for some gold rams and they have a small variety of some here - mainly balloon ones. Fair warning though...their shrimp tanks were filled with some good sized planaria crawling along all the back walls of the tank. Maybe they didn't clean any off the day i was there but i would be careful when it comes to buying any plants or shrimp here in the case you bring some planaria home into your tanks because that's gonna be a battle nobody wants to face lol. read more

This family owned business maintains the cleanliness of the store and is fully stocked. Majority of the fish stores I have been to have a weird odor and is dusty everywhere, but this store is odorless and spotless clean. In addition, all the aquatic animals and plants in the store are healthy and thriving. There are previous reviews that state the employees here are rude, but there is a misunderstanding. The owner, T, and his son were both absolutely friendly, informative, and honest. They are very soft-spoken, which is a reason why people may have misjudged them. T and J were glad to answer all my questions thoroughly. They provided great customer service from the moment I walked in all the way to the moment I left the store. Reef Tropical Fish is my all-time favorite tropical fish store. Browsing through all the tanks and all the supplies is one of my favorite past-times. Tanks are well-maintained, fish look very healthy. They have a very good variety of fish, and depending on the day they have fish I've never seen before. I would say compared to saltwater they definitely have a much bigger freshwater fish section, but the saltwater section is also much better maintained than most other fish stores in the area. This place is a really good place to start if you're just getting into aquascaping -- they have UNS tissue cultures and a good selection of hardscape materials. They do have live plants in with the fish tanks as well. They also have a large selection of UNS tanks, and if they don't have the size you need they can order it for you. Owners are nice folks who will generally leave you to browse but they are very helpful when you ask questions or ask for assistance. Prices are fair for mostly everything, so at this point even if something is a few dollars cheaper online I just buy it here to support my LFS. I bought most of my gear here, including multiple UNS rimless tanks, heaters, filters, substrate, lights, fertilizers, etc. I got my otocinclus, mystery snails, bettas, and ghost shrimp here and almost all are thriving give or take one oto and one shrimp (who may have been bullied by my bettas, but I'm not sure.) Planning on stocking my next tank with either pea puffers or celestial pearl danios from here. Overall I highly recommend! read more

I'm in Long Beach but regularly make the drive here because their stock is always great: they have a good selection of equipment, tanks, substrates, hardscape materials, and so on. They also have a variety of healthy plants and freshwater inverts you can't find at every aquarium store (like pompom crabs and vampire crabs). They have a lot of non standard sizes of rimless tanks from nano to giant. Their selection of livestock is always varied and for the most part healthy. Tanks are clean and appear well-maintained. They're also always very helpful and knowledgeable without being condescending. The older gentleman (perhaps one of the owners?) even helped me carry my stuff to my car today without me expecting it or asking, since I'd bought quite a bit. Highly recommend this place! read more

IF I COULD GIVE 10 STARS I WOULD! I started my saltwater aquarium about a year ago and this store has been such a staple for my fish. Every time I've visited the store each employee is extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I've had a couple occurrences where my tank has deteriorated but with the help of this store my saltwater tank is now thriving. The pricing on some items are a bit expensive but it's good to help out the local family business so I don't mind. I am always satisfied with my purchase so it is definitely worth it. This place has become our biweekly stop in because of how amazing it is the father and son duo are so knowledgeable, patient, friendly, informative and helpful, they make the learning process for a beginner like myself a breeze. My husband has a 40 gallon salt water tank and I've been responsible for our sons freshwater tank. We have a 13 gallon with a splitter and houses a betta on each side. We bought both bettas from here, one was a female half koi and the other was a male 24k gold. They both are still very healthy and happy. We've also bought all our aquatic plants from here as well, and all are thriving in the tank. Lastly we've purchased a clean up crew (which is quite challenging for bettas as you can imagine) but they helped me through the process and we got 2 mini catfish that mainly eat the algae build up in the tank and today we added a Wood Shrimp successfully. So far so good, we love coming here and adding to our tanks. Super thankful for all the knowledge shared with us too highly recommend for all your fish tank needs at a very decent price. I love this store. I use to come here as a kid with my dad when he had his 50 gallon saltwater tank. Now as an adult, I started the hobby with my own kid. I built 2 planted nano tanks, buying majority of my items from here. They have a large selection of rimless tanks with competitive prices, especially for the UN tanks. They have a huge selection of fresh water plants and fresh water tissue cultures. They have a nice healthy selection of aquarium animals. Much more healthier than what Petco or Petsmart has. I stocked my two tanks with all my hardscapes, aquasoil, plants, and livestock from here. As a beginner hobbyist, I asked a lot of questions and they were very honest and helpful. I came here today to take a look at Salt Water fish - yes I am a noob & I will be investing $ into starting up an aquarium just shortly after the new year (don't want to do it now, since I will be moving soon). It was nice to see clean tanks! They weren't crowded either! However, I was disappointed there wasn't any sea slugs, octopus, or a sea horse. I really came here hoping to see invertebrates, but there were a couple of starfish & sea urchin. I thought the salt water selection was a bit limited, but I did read they can special order as well. My favorite was Mr Sting Ray... oh my... so adorable! They seem very entertaining & not shy at all! I wish I had more money or else I would of totally got him. But it was sad seeing him in a narrow tank :( he looked a bit scrunched. I hope someone saves him & gives him a perfect home soon. I say there are more fresh water fish, but there are even pond fish too. The decorations seem a bit more expensive compared to Pets Smart but it is a local place, so I would rather support a local business than a big box store. I will probably be back here to buy the supplies & everything when I'm ready. read more

I bought 3 mollies and 2 plecos and not even 3 hours after i got home one of them had died yes I acclimated and everything, I also bought a plant for my shrimp tank which ended up being infested with snails in a matter of hours which makes me extremely annoyed because now I have a problem to deal with. This place still has great selection however in one trip I already had a lot of trouble. I have to say the employees are welcoming but the stuff they sell isn't worth the trouble it'll cost you later down the road. Serves me right for cheating on my regular LFS. read more

This aquarium store is located at the corner of State College Blvd and La Palma Ave near the intersection of the 57 and 91 freeways. They share a large parking lot with a bunch of other businesses. I have a freshwater tank at work and came here to replenish it with new fish. They had a good selection of freshwater fish at very decent prices. I have been going to the store for about a year now. I have been wanting to make the move to a bigger tank. I had a 45 gal 1990 Octagon shaped not good for viewing. It was a hand me down from my buddy I have a 10 gallon before. My Oscars were starting to get very large.I've been eyeing the tanks for about three months finally went into the store today. I found my new fish place! i came in looking for meds for my suddenly sick/dying fish. Was greeted by a super sweet staff member (who seemed new at this aquarium thing) who tried to help but after hearing my prob said that it would be best to consult with the owner who might know better- i really appreciate when someone can help me find the right answer instead of pretending to know and making something up. Owner was helping someone else at the moment so i took the time to walk around the store. Good variety of supplies, all tanks were clean, had healthy fish, and most had live plants which i love. Older asian guy owner was soo nice when explaining the differences between fish ick and fungus. When I asked about if he thought plant foods really help he said he didnt use them bc of his turnover but recommended me to an online hobbyist club that met up occasionally as a great place to discuss/ask about aquarium plants. $100 burned, in 48 hrs. Been a customer for a few years, recently tried them again as I was near the store and they received new stock of Marine fish this past Saturday. Bought (1) Coral Beauty, (1) Butterfly and a sand sifting starfish. While in store noticed several fish in distress and was about to leave, but thought it will be okay. Coral Beauty dead in 24 hours, Butterfly the following day.. starfish still alive. No life warranty on fish, Liveaquaria.com is getting my business moving fwd. read more

This fish store had many big fishes in one single tank not much space to move around and swim. The main thing were the betta fish many of them had dirty water. Many looked in stress. The giant koi was the same length as the bottom of the cup it was in. It was so big that it had to curve its body. Prices were way too high. The employees had a very bad Attitude. read more

I purchased a 75 gallon aquarium and all the equipment here plus koi and fresh water sharks. I enjoyed watching the baby Koi grow. We built a koi pond which took months longer to finish than expected. Today we moved the koi fish into the pond. People say you cannot keep Koi in an aquarium. We did have to do water changes every three days after they grew. Even though that was a chore, I now have 11 of the original 12 in my pond. Unfortunately the sharks did not make it. Reef tropical Fish has everything you need and expert help. I look forward to going back to get new fish for my aquarium. As a design psychology professional, I can tell you that watching fish swim is good for your emotional health. Whenever I design a garden I add a pond and I love aquariums too. I see a lot of reviews bashing the owner for being rude. It's absolutely not true. He may not be the most talkative guy, but if you approach him he is very friendly. Of all the fish stores I visited over the weekend, this one was the cleanest by far....albeit the most expensive by far as well. They have a huge selection with a well planned layout. There is a lot of room to walk through the store, everything is well organized and they have a very big selection. The only thing that turns me off about this place is that everything was anywhere from $1 to $15 more than other places that I visited....any maybe you get what you pay for. This is an excellent source for tanks, supplies, fish, and advice. Excellent stock. Have had so much fun with a dry start method, planted, 15 gallon Fluval Flex. I wanted an African Dwarf Frog colony. Ultum Nature Controsoil was suggested, and it's been amazing. No hyperbole here. For a low tech tank and minimal CO2, everything thrives. I always skimped on this before, or used clay based substrates that were cloudy for years and made tanks look gross. This was the key to my success, and I'd never even heard of this stuff. Monte Carlo as carpeting plant, another suggestion. Was neat to mimic those gorgeous tanks I've seen in aquascape mags. These people are fantastic and they really have the tools and know how to help a newbie like me. Oh, and they introduced me to my new favorite fish, The Endler. So beautiful. Now I'm mail ordering purebred females and males to establish a colony in a new tank and very excited. read more
