I'm going to have all my stuff out and need to run to the nearest hardware store. Hartman & Sons is not the nearest hardware store to my house, but it's the one I go to in these situations. I call it in my under $1 store, because I usually spend pocket change buying a screw. At Hartman & Sons, I just walk up to the counter, tell them I need a screw, and they take me where I want to go, quickly and efficiently and, most importantly, with a smile. I've done this over 30 times and every time the result's the same. They recommend and show me the exact thing that I need. They never try to upsell me or make me buy in bulk. If Harman & Sons were reviewing me, I'm sure they would give me 1 star. Because when I'm going to spend $20 or something, I go to Home Depot or Lowe's. I'm the jerk who only uses the store because of their excellent service. I'm a taker. Which is exactly why I'm giving it 5 stars, I'm trying to give back.

Finally, one employee who was waiting on another customer noticed me rambling around the store and flagged down another employee. If you've never been, well, they are going to have pretty much everything that you need. Lumber and building supplies, everything you need for home improvement, appliances, outdoor furniture & landscaping... All of it. Typically the prices of items are at the very least competitive if not as low as you will find. I'd say this is definitely the case with plants, etc from landscaping. Way cheaper than local nurseries (I love to support the local nurseries, but these prices are just SO good in comparison... Definitely less selection though, so there is that). They've got all your tools, paint, etc etc so on and so on. Basically anything you would need that isn't insanely specialized will be there. Finding it might be the most difficult thing but you can usually flag down an employee and they all seem to have a pretty good idea of where things are and can direct you where you need to go. In a battle of big box home improvement stores, Home Depot is JUST a touch lower quality than Menards (but Menards is run by a terrible owner who hates the environment, among other things, so there is that - also, none around KC to shop at anyway) but a rung higher in quality than Lowe's. All fairly indistinguishable but if you've spent some amount of time in each, you'd probably see the differences and agree. This location is easy to get in and out of, no parking issues. Seems a little smaller than some stores, but still all the same junk packed inside.

I've brought my pup in here as she continues to need some socialization and it always goes well. One time the clerks had their dog too and they became fast friends. This store really packs quite a bit into it. Of course it won't be as sizable as a Home Depot, but man oh man is the experience world's better. I found every single thing on my list which was great. It's closest size comparison to me would be the Ace in Westport, but hey guess what, you don't have to fear for your life in KC's worst intersection if you come here! It's easy to park in the lot out front, off of the always-busy 75th Street. My kids love it because they have a gumball machine, whoopie cushions, and other classics from back in the day when the world was making real attempts to be fun. Ace is a much easier in and out than Lowe's or Home Depot. They are also locally owned franchises. So you can support your community by shopping here. I still get some things at Lowe's but most of the time I'm shopping at Ace for tools, hardware, paint, lighting, etc. This time I needed some brackets to hold up a shelf (they had the right size in three colors) and some 40W appliance bulbs. They had those in clear or frosted. The store is very well organized, and incredibly well stocked! The employees were indeed helpful. I am a fan!
