The service at the Evelyn is outstanding. The front desk is helpful beyond even what you ask for. However, the star loss is for two (maybe petty but it matters to me) reasons. First, the closet has a mini fridge inside. I was in town for work so I wanted to hang my clothes to prevent wrinkles. I couldn't hang my work clothes straight because the bottom half of the closet was blocked by the fridge. Second, I was already annoyed by the fridge but then it was useless to me because it was stuffed full. I don't want a minibar. I want somewhere to store food or my own drinks for later. Otherwise no issues staying here but I'm not sure if I'd choose it again. read more

This hotel is in a great location (in my opinion). It less than a mile away from the Empire State Building, Madison Square Park, and the Flat Iron. Yes, the room was small, but I thought it was still nice and we had no issues with noise like other guests had. I also loved that the bathroom floors were heated and the toilet paper was good quality. Even the hair dryer in the room was good! The hotel staff was great! They were very friendly and helpful. I love that they have a service that stores your bag if you arrive early and even after check out if you have a later flight. We got breakfast vouchers during our stay and that was a nice touch as well. The fitness center is a bit small, but it was adequate enough to get a good workout in. Generally, my two nights stay was excellent. Good checking in process, with Amal, comfortable room, and quiet sleeping. My overall favorable experience was marked by a frustrating process to reclaim my checked bag. I checked it in the morning, and indicated approximately when I would return after a business meeting to retrieve it. When I went back to the hotel around 2 PM, first there was no there. And the front desk staff were not helpful, nor were they especially courteous. I would note that Amal was not there or I expect she would have been more helpful. When one very helpful bellman returned, he had to dig through the stacked check room with multiple layers of bags on top of each other . He could not find my bag, despite the fact that he had my claim ticket. When the younger man who had checked in my bag in the morning,returned. , he eventually found my bag, underneath piles of larger and heavier luggage. Overall, I spent 15 to 20 minutes, trying to find my bag, and therefore missed my train. I would emphasize especially the first gentleman was as helpful as he could be, and clearly frustrated, and then had to deal with a backed up line of others retrieving or checking their bags. read more

The 1st night or two I almost considered seeing if we could check out. The room is so small and you can hear everything from the housekeeping closet next door and doors slamming. But on end of 2nd day the place grew on us. Lovely restaurant and bar on 1st floor. Free breakfast was a nice touch and convenient. Staff was very friendly and helpful. I liked the location near Madison sq park and Eataly and the Museum of Sex. If I stayed again I'd def be pickier about room location. My daughter and I stayed here overnight and had an epic experience from the very first minute we arrived! We were greeted, our car was taken by the valet and checked in by the front desk staff. Andre could NOT have been nicer - even upgraded us! We had an absolutely lovely room - the decor was simple and sophisticated. The bar was exceedingly well stocked and snacks galore! The bathroom was well appointed and had a deep soaking tub. The bed was super comfortable and the linens were sublime. Got vouchers for breakfast downstairs- egg and cheese on a homemade brioche bun...yes, thanks! Our car was out front when we checked out - super easy. The bar looked spectacular- next time! We used the Evelyn as our base of operation for a whirlwind three-day tour of NYC. It is perfectly located in the center of the city, with easy access to everywhere. A knob popped off of a drawer and rolled under the dresser. On inspecting the area beneath the mini refrigerator, I discovered an object resembling a microphone. It was connected to an audio jack. Upon contacting the front desk, the representative visited the room and informed me that the device in question was not a microphone but a table sensor. However, he said he couldn't answer why its cable was attached to an audio jack, as he had only been told of the sensor during training. Regardless, I asked him to remove the device and to have the floors cleaned. There was a decent layer or dust and hair underneath the dresser and bed. The desk contacted me the following morning while I was asleep to ask if I would like the floor cleaned now. Since I had asked on check in but now it was the next day and I didn't really want to leave bed, especially I was to check out in approximately 16 hours I told them to cancel the cleaning. I was told the bar was a good place to have cocktails and I visit at any time before midnight. Admittedly I arrived at 11:55 after running from Broadway, as this was the last night I was in New York and wanted to try them. Unfortunately, the bar said they were closed for cocktails a few minutes early. Overall, the hotel's services did not justify the weekday rate of $1,255 for two weekday nights. read more

We had a nice stay here. The interior and exterior are gorgeous. Staff were so friendly. Our booking came with a bottle of wine perk- it was delivered with a hand written note- a sweet, personal touch that isn't the norm these days. Hubs was happy to find Other Half beer at the bar. The included grab and go breakfast was good, too. My only quibble was the bed pillow- too flimsy and loosely filled. It's in a nice location- with lots of dining and drinking establishments nearby, plus Madison Square park and Flatiron 5 min away. The Museum of Sex next door is a blast, as well. read more

This is a great hotel in a great spot. Styled in Art Deco, I liked it as soon as I walked in. I love Art Deco. It's classy. It's timeless. It never goes out of style. The rooms are a bit cozy, but I've been in smaller NYC hotels, so I found them perfectly adequate. I'm just happy if I can walk around the bed. I used to stay at the Arlo a few streets away, but couldn't get out of bed without hitting my back or head on the TV hanging on the wall. -It felt like sleeping in a Winnebago. It was time for a new spot. The Evelyn was a little more expensive, but worth it just to gain a little space and avoid injuries. The linens were nice, the bed comfortable, and the pillows perfectly adequate. I had no problems sleeping, and I can be pretty particular about hotel beds. It took me far too long to figure out the shower, which is less than ideal when you're sans clothing, but otherwise I thought the bathroom was nice. Small, but I liked the esthetics. Although the restaurant, Leonelli, permanently closed, their bar is still open. I searched the internet all over and could not find even a trace of a bar menu. Not even on the hotel's website. I wouldn't have even known the bar's name, had I not looked at my bank statement. That's not great advertising, people. We ordered two small cocktails and the bill was $47 with a tip. It is NYC and it was a hotel bar, but it still seemed overpriced given the entire experience. The bar isn't exactly a destination. It's convenient though. My sister was pretty buzzed before we got there and our drinks finished her off, so it was nice to only be an elevator away from our room. They have a pop up bakery on the first floor, but Dominique Ansel is about 100 ft away from the hotel, so I'm not sure why anyone would eat a pastry at the Evelyn. Maybe they serve good pastries? But c'mon. I just said Dominique Ansel is next door. There was a "Sex Kit" in the room's minibar. It came with condoms, lube, and even a vibrator. I was crashing with my sister. No need for a sex kit, but had I had a companion, it would have saved a trip to CVS or the Sex Museum next door. read more

I picked this hotel for my little girls birthday trip so we could have a suite/separate bedroom area. My first three photos are our actual room. The last two photos are what I booked. We had no dresser to put any clothes as shown in the photo. The radio in the part with the sofa was also not there, something my little girl was looking forward to. The rooms were very clean and the staff was great. I don't think I would stay here again because I paid over 1k for two nights and had a view of equipment and cigarette butts. The hose for the bathroom shower leaked as well. One tiny glass shelf in bathroom to put a few small things. The lack of storage made it super cramped. The mini bar was so full there was no room for me to put a cold drink or any food. There's no microwave or a fridge with storage, mini bar only. Parking was $70 a day. read more

his place went from being one of my favorite hotels to a complete nightmare. I almost never write reviews and I usually give five stars even when something is a little off, but what happened here and how it was handled wasn't okay. I stayed at The Evelyn for a business trip, and right after I checked out I realized I left a gold necklace in the room, along with a pair of shoes. I called immediately and was told housekeeping had found both items. Since I don't live in New York, I let them know when I'd be back in the city to pick everything up. I also called the day before to confirm, and I was told it would be ready. When I arrived at the hotel, they brought out my shoes but not my necklace. I was then told they couldn't find it, even though it had been documented as found. The manager, Amal, asked for a few days so she could check with housekeeping and figure out where it was placed. The necklace was never found. Amal later told me it had "gone missing" and asked me to send a receipt so they could reimburse me. The problem is that this necklace was a gift from someone who has passed away, so I don't have a receipt. I offered to get a quote from a jeweler for what it would cost to remake it, especially since the price of gold has gone up. I was told that wouldn't be accepted. I was so desperate that I even tried to put together documentation myself based on the jeweler's quote, and that was rejected too. Then, on top of all of that, I was told that the necklace they logged as found might not have been mine all of a sudden, which made this feel even worse. I understand policies and protocols exist, but when your staff confirms an item was found and it later disappears, there should be some accountability and some reasonable effort to make it right, especially under circumstances like mine. Instead, I was left with nothing. No reimbursement for the necklace, and they didn't even offer anything for my stay. Truly heartbreaking and honestly a nightmare experience. read more

Currently a guest at this hotel. I picked this place because it had a 4.5 star ranking so I figured it would be comparable to staying at the Chelsea, which is where I also stayed on this trip. The Chelsea is also marked as a 4.5 out of five star hotel. The difference is between the two hotels are 1,000,000 miles. First of all I'm in a room right now that is facing construction and has been so loud the windows here do not provide soundproofing whatsoever. I checked in on a Sunday so there was no construction noise, but lots of traffic noise throughout the night. When I tried calling the front desk, my call wouldn't go through so I called from my cell phone. The man at the front desk was less than helpful telling me to pack up my things and he would see what he could do and I would need to depart the room at noon and I said absolutely not. I'm not departing the room. I have a migraine. I've already paid for a room. You just need to move me to a quiet room. The construction noise is insane. When staying at a hotel that's at this level. I expect to be treated with care and that's not the experience here whatsoever. Also, they use single ply toilet paper, which is so cheap. I'm really surprised by that. When I arrived, the man at the door helped me with my luggage when I got out of my Uber, which was wonderful and he took me to the front desk and said she's checking in so why did the lady at the front desk say how may I help you. I'm standing here with luggage. I'm here to check in. Overall it's just not been a seamless experience, which is what you expect when you're staying at a hotel with this rating. MANHATTAN: we spent the night in the city because we wanted to have the flexibility to explore with Brie, especially in the evening to experience the dog friendly night life! The Evelyn hotel was a perfect place to stay! They are pet friendly for dogs under 40lbs, but we always recommend calling to see if they can accommodate bigger pups. The historic hotel is beautifully decorated and a pleasure to hang out at. The lobby is comfortable and there are 2 dining options that allows dogs inside: the bar at Benno Restaurant and Leonelli Focacceria e Pasticceria! We stayed in a superior queen room and enjoyed the intimate space and decor. The bed was comfortable and it was just enough to keep us happy for the night. The rooms were pretty quiet too. If you drive in, they offer valet parking. The location is great being in NoMad and is so close to The Flatiron building, the High Line walking path, Bryant Park, Union Square, and the Empire State Building! Madison Square Park is just down the street to walk around, have fun in the dog run, and have a bathroom break. We would definitely stay here again! read more

We picked this hotel due to the style (boutique), location and online recommendations. It also didn't hurt that it was one of the options for our vacation package from Expedia. We enjoyed the Tusk Bar, the breakfast options, the art decco decor, the room amenities, and the location. Like many NYC hotels, however (especially renovated ones), the rooms were a little small. I would have traded out the mini bar for a dresser. My wife also said it took a long time to get hot water although I had no problem, and I reminded her she likes to wake up extra early, probably before other guests started showering. Our room faced the street, and we experienced construction noise. I would probably request a room in the rear next time. Another minor nitpick is that several times I asked the front desk for change (so I could tip housecleaning) but on multiple occasions, they did not have change. We walked around a lot and had no problems taking the subway. Would consider staying here again. read more

This was my third stay at the Evelyn, and I'd give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. The location was lively and convenient, the room was cozy and charming, and the afternoon wine happy hour made for an excellent conclusion to a day of site seeing. Most of all, the service was excellent. Tiffany, Amal, and Nadja (spelling?) went out of their way to make my stay pleasant (thank you!!!). And when I had to cut my stay short because of a medical issue, another front desk staffer gave me instructions on how to request a refund from the third-party site I had used to make my reservation. The food and vibe at the restaurant weren't as impressive as during previous stays, but overall I had a good experience this time around at the Evelyn. I look forward to coming back for future stays. Below are a few considerations for travelers coming to the Evelyn. (1) If you're sensitive to noise, bring earplugs and/or noise-cancelling headphones. In addition to street noise in rooms facing 27th Street, the noise from slamming room doors and neighboring guests can get loud at times, especially during busy travel seasons (a frequent issue in cozy NYC hotels given the often cramped quarters). (2) Some guests seemed underwhelmed by the breakfast options at the hotel's cafe. If a full breakfast is your thing, you might consider stocking up on food at the Whole Foods on 28th and Madison, or getting a breakfast sandwich or omelette at Bread & Butter on 31st and 5th (one of my favorite eateries in the area). (3) When signing onto the hotel's wifi through my laptop, my VPN warned me not to. If you plan on using a laptop, using your smartphone as a personal wifi hotspot may be safer than using the hotel wifi (again, this unfortunately is an issue at many NYC hotels where I've stayed). read more

The location of this hotel is truly excellent. You're close to many good restaurants and I was within walking distance to my job and Penn Station. The staff were nice and I was able to check-in on time. But as others have noted, this hotel has a huge problem with heat and noise. Let's start with the heat. When I entered my room, it was boiling. I actually had to take a cold shower while I waited for the AC to kick in. I came back after work tonight and once again, the clean staff completely turned off my AC so it was a sweat house. And then nighttime came around... Im staying in NY for work, and I get that many people are staying for fun. However, I've never slept so poorly at a hotel in my life. On a Wednesday night, people were slamming doors, yelling in the hallway and giggling until 1:30 am. You can also hear every bump in the rooms around you. I'm only giving the Evelyn 2 stars because the staff are very pleasant and helpful. Otherwise, I was completely dissatisfied with my room which contained 2 double beds. Our room in the hotel was the smallest room I have ever seen and I have traveled quite a bit. There was no room to open a suitcase except on your bed. The closet was only usable for a few shirts. There were no drawers; the bathroom was incredibly small. The door hits the sink when you try to close it. And the TV did not work. If you read the fine print in the room description you will learn that the room Is only 190 sq feet. Which is the rationale the hotel gives you if you complain. I don't know about you but I'm not generally checking square footage when I choose a hotel room. My recommendation: one person only in this room. The hotel was able to move us to a suite the next day, which was very nice but there was a $250 up charge. I don't plan to stay again. VC read more

tl;dr: Small but clean rooms, great service, fantastic people. Free breakfast and airport shuttles, but be aware of the nightly service charge. Amazing location for no car. 10/10 would book again. We stayed here for a ground-shaking 13 nights for our honeymoon. At first, the concierge didn't believe us! Everyone was extremely accommodating on our long stay, even when we got terribly, terribly sick. We ended up making friends with our room service and the staff at the cafe, and they even tried to learn our names--which was a nice touch. By the end of our stay, they knew us and our usual orders at a glance. Another plus? They all seemed happy to be there. Whether that is true or not, it made us feel better that the staff seemed to be paid well for their hard work. I wish I had been able to learn their names, though! The doorman has umbrellas to borrow, if you need it, and can schedule a private airport shuttle that is a bit cheaper than an Uber, if you're going to Newark (about $110). At the end of your stay, the hotel emails you with a survey and gives you a chance to commend members of staff. I'm terrible with names, but I will try for sure! Our room cleaning person deserves a raise. The rooms are very nice, with gorgeous bathrooms. Perhaps the most unique aspect of our room was the tiling in the bathroom and shower, which was printed with sheet music for a cheerful song about NYC. As musicians ourselves, we found ourselves reading the music as we stood in the shower. Surprisingly entertaining when you're delirious with an upper respiratory infection... The shower! If you're someone who's picky about showerheads, look no further. While the water pressure is a bit lower, the shower has 2 heads--one rain-style above your head and another that is handheld. Just thought I'd mention them. As for food, there is a cafe and a bar inside the hotel itself, on the ground floor. The bar is also an event venue, but it never gets overly loud or obnoxious. If you catch it without an event, the staff is fantastic, but the drinks are quite over budget, even compared to the surrounding area, and the menu was quite confusing. It had different alcohols with prices--we didn't know if those were priced for a neat glass or for any drink using them! We ended up sneaking out after a water because we weren't sure how the pricing worked or how to order a rum and coke. We are, apparently, not that fancy! There's also a nice gym in the basement floor, and very clean restrooms. We didn't use the gym but it was very clean and well-stocked with different machines. Finally, the location! The location is absolutely, 100% fantastic, to the point that we decided it would be a place we would consider moving, if we had the money. It's a more residential district, with a nice liquor store and a Whole Foods just around the corner. 10 minute walk to Times Square and Macy's, and right next to the Museum of Sex! There are three notable cons about this room: the minibar, the service charges, and the phone-to-tv casting. The minibar is a fridge tucked away in a cabinet under the TV. It's well-stocked, but expensive. We didn't touch it, but we did have to move things around a bit to use the fridge for our leftovers because there was no other fridge option to use. Because of this, we got a ton of holds on my card for the minibar (which the concierge removed without question upon checkout.) Weight-based minibars are not my fave. But, if you are a minibar person, it has a surprising range to offer, from fancy alcohols to snickers bars and phone chargers, and someone comes to restock it every day. The cast-to-tv system seems pretty luxurious, I will admit--as long as it works. Ours disconnected us every 7 hours or so, and we had to reconnect our phones each day. Sometimes it didn't like to work, so we opted to watch cable TV instead (a free option with a good range of channels). Again, not a problem for a shorter stay, but still mildly annoying. Not enough to remove a star though! The service charges are something that I do wish was communicated earlier, before booking. Each day, there's an additional charge of about $50 for "service," which I assume means room cleaning, concierge, tips, etc. The fee is due on checkout. I don't really mind paying this because the staff was fantastic, but I do wish it had been included in the original cost of booking the room because a surprise $600 charge at checkout is a bit of a mood killer! So, if you're looking to book, be aware that this charge exists. The concierge did make that charge abundantly clear to be when I called to confirm our booking, and he admitted it was a bit unusual for the length of our stay, but he did offer multiple payment options (before our stay, as a payment online, etc.) so it was a bit easier to budget around it. We scored this hotel for about $100 a night through a bundle on Expedia, so an extra $50 didn't affect our plans much since $100 was under budget for us. Still, be aware! read more

We were shocked by the size and had to move to a suite, which was a greater expense. Also, many things did not work (telephone to call front desk, the tv, no one to help with luggage, amenities not offered). We had so petty many issues that made the stay very unpleasant. The staff, though is very nice and they try. But there is nothing they can do about the room size or inefficiencies of the hotel. If you must stay in this hotel, it is recommended you book a suite. While the hotel updated the rooms to make it more contemporary, I loved that they kept most of the design classic and glamorous. Location was also pretty convenient as it's in the middle of everything. Only flaw was that the bathroom (which I loved for its modernity and heated floors) seemed wat too big compared to the size of the bedroom. They could have cut into the bathroom more as there was a bit of dead space that could have been more useful in the bedroom. Great value that I'd definitely stay in again. read more

I visited New York this past weekend with my wife for our anniversary. We usually stay at one of the bigger hotels, but at the recommendation of my friend we decided to check out the Evelyn and we couldn't have been happier. The hotel has so much character from the ornate lobby to the beautifully decorated rooms. And while it's a boutique hotel, the rooms are huge. Much larger than the rooms I stay in when my company books for me. The hospitality was amazing from the front desk to the servers. Sava really went above and beyond and made our anniversary trip unforgettable! My wife couldn't stop raving about all the items in the room from the linens and pillows to the robes. She works in retail and was so surprised to see they use Frette for everything. I splurged for the suite and really enjoyed the sitting area. Everything was super clean and immaculate which can be a really sticking point for me. The gym has great equipment and all that you need for a quick workout. They just re-did their restaurant Benno which is Michelin star-rated French cuisine and it's delicious. The café in the lobby is so convenient for breakfast and a quick lunch. We signed up for the free walking tour on Saturday that picks you up outside the hotel and I can say as someone who originally grew up in New York, I definitely learned tons about my hometown city. Next door is the Museum of Sex which we checked out on our last day. The location of this hotel is unbeatable, everything is walking distance. I would recommend getting up early, popping over a couple blocks to the Harry Potter store to virtual queue and just waiting in the hotel or hanging around Union Square or Madison Park. Tons of trains nearby so getting to any of the museums and sights is super easy. We're already planning our next stay here when we come back to New York next year for a friend's wedding! read more

Loved the art deco charm of the hotel. I booked a suite and it was the way to go. Yes, NY has smaller hotel rooms, but the size of the suite was great. I stayed in room 1203 with a friend and we never felt cramped. The staff were very accommodating and the service at the bar/restaurant Benno was top notch. Great location, very walkable to shops, restaurants, bars and the subway. Would stay again without hesitation. read more

$1000/ NIGHT AND STILL WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD I stayed in a suite at The Evelyn Hotel on 12/23/22, one of the coldest nights of this past year in NYC. All I wanted was room service and a bath. Rooms service was advertised as an amenity but I quickly learned that there was no in-room dining and the best they could do was to bring up a seamless order out my room. All the cups inside this suite (a $1000/ night suite) were disposable plastic. I went to draw a bath and the water from the pipes was yellow/ brown from rust. In the middle of the night I awoke to a freezing cold room. The heater was not working but it was 2am and I could't reach anyone at the front desk so I decided to just deal with it. When I told the front desk manager the next day about the heat he was hardly apologetic and in response to a picture of a bathtub full of brown water he remarked "well it's an old building". I immediately canceled the remaining two nights I had booked and demanded a full refund for what was one of the worst experiences I have ever had. After much back and forth with the manager AND a VP of Marketing at Triumph Hotel Group I was told that the best they could do was a 50% refund, which was still $600+ out of my pocket. In an email the VP said to me "We are sorry that you did not find the hotel suitable and truly have done our best to accommodate" HOW IS NO HEAT AND RUSTED WATER IN A $1000/ NIGHT SUITE SUITABLE? read more

If you are handicapped in anyway do not stay at this hotel. I was placed in a room for that had amenities for people with disabilities because apparently this was all that was available. The room is terrible and dark and looks at a wall and is the same level as the air system so buzzes and hums. Though I'm not handicapped I feel like why the hell are they making the accommodation so terrible for those that are??? It's just wrong and not worth spending a dollar to stay there. Also the staff is incredibly rude especially the manager. Save yourself and go someplace at least half decent. read more

Meh. $400 a night for a boutique wannabe. The rooms are small but hey, it's NYC. They offer a breakfast with the room which is nice. My room faced the street and was super noisy all night. The service in their bar was terrible but the bell staff and front desk workers were very friendly. They had weird rules like if you put an item into the mini fridge, they fine you. I'll try to stay somewhere else next time. read more

Joe V. checked us in and gave us a complimentary upgrade to larger room for our anniversary celebration. The Evelyn provides free breakfast vouchers in their attached Leonelli Bakery next to the lobby. This is a nice feature that we used daily. The staff there was pretty nice also. The Evelyn has a great art deco theme going on and we loved our room. The bathroom has heated floors that make it sooooo nice when using the room. They have an in room safe, albeit tucked into the back of the closet on a middle shelf and very hard to reach. They offer a mini bar and snacks in the room that you have to pay for. Overall, for the price and location in Manhattan, The Evelyn offers great value and I recommend staying there. read more
