The employees and vibe are so crazy different from when I first shopped here last year. Last year, I just started hiking. Every employee at this store was super helpful, friendly and welcoming. They really motivated me to get on more trails. This year, it seems like literally every single one couldn't be bothered. The guy who was helping me with the backpacks couldn't care less about my questions. He walked me over to the bags, then just left me in the middle of a question, and I had to figure things out for myself. Then when I got to the counter, another guy looked even more unbothered. Andrew ended up helping me pick one out and also walked me through hiking shoes. I originally thought my running shoes would work fine... until I nearly rolled my ankle on the little rock display in the store. This is for the guy at REI who refused to sell me anything on May 28th when I asked for help and guidance to buy equipment to hike Mt Whitney on May 30th while there is snow on the mountain. He has a website dedicated to Mt Whitney, which he told me I should have read. I said, better yet, I've got you in person. Apparently, he didn't think I was capable. When I told him I'm an avid hiker, he said, "I've got a lot of experience unpacking boxes, but you don't see me delivering any babies." I didn't know whether to laugh or be offended. I ended up going to Elevation (https://sierraelevation.com/shopping) in Lone Pine the day before my hike. The guys there couldn't have been more helpful. Prices for the same gear were 30% cheaper too. In the end, it all worked out for me and I was able to have the amazing experience despite going to REI asking for their help. read more

Our first visit to this new location was incredibly disappointing due to a total lack of customer service from the management. We spent time double and triple-confirming the price of snowboard goggles with an associate because the shelf placards and box tags didn't match. He checked his system and assured us the lower price was correct. However, we were overcharged by $40 at the register. When we went back in to resolve it, the Employee Cara who apparently was the Manager of the store was shockingly rude. Instead of acknowledging the store's pricing error, she was dismissive and defensive. She didn't offer an apology, told us the associate "didn't know what he was talking about," and bluntly said she'd never offer such an "insane discount." Her lack of empathy and condescending tone made the decision easy: we returned the item and left. We just moved to the neighborhood, but based on this management's attitude, we won't be back. read more

DAVE IS AMAZING!! He helped me with all of my bike questions and more, we ended up having a really pleasant conversation about safety and the outdoors. I learned how to properly test helmet safety from him. And even some good trails and places.He really cares and goes the extra mile for customers (he referred me to coworkers with expert knowledge too). Environment is not the most welcoming, and it can be difficult to get the attention of employees or help with questions about products. Let me talk to you about my experience at REI, I went in looking for shoes. What kind I have no idea. I needed guidance, I'm trying to be more active. Jogging, hiking and I didn't know what shoes I needed and what level of comfort or support. In comes Natalie, what I will refer to her as the shoe expert. She gave me so much information and was so helpful. She had a lot going on already because the store was busy. But she took the time and answered all of my questions and addressed all of my concerns. She was delightful. And brought me all the shoes I needed to try on and brought out a few extras so that I could see if I liked them or not. When I wasn't sure about the color she brought out the color I liked. And wasn't hesitant, showed no signs of annoyance. She was delightful. And I appreciated the fact that I wasn't pushed into buying anything. Normally I feel like I have to buy something and a lot more that the sales person would recommend. But she told me about the importance of running socks and jogging socks and that when you hike you need to size up a little due to swelling. I mean she knew her stuff and I appreciate the time she spent with me going over everything and answering all my questions. Natalie thank you for a job well done. In the past my experiences at REI have been a bit iffy. Last week I decided to give them another chance. As usual I was having some trouble finding an employee to help me. A young lady walked past me and even though she didn't have a vest on she did have an ear piece so I decided to take a chance and asked her if she worked there. She responded that she did. She then proceeded to patiently answer all my questions, helped me find several things, and looked up other things on the hand computer. I hope I didn't interrupt her break or something, but if I did she didn't say a thing and was never rude. I didn't see a name tag but she had long red hair and glasses. I am fairly self sufficient at R.E.I. and often times come in with no real reason other than to see new toys. Recently I visited the Arcadia location and I was on a serious recon mission. I walked in and was fortunate enough to cross paths with Anjie. I want to say that the reason for this specific 5-star rating comes solelý from my interacting with her, and it only took a moment before I knew this was going to be a fruitful shopping experience. Arriving about a hour before closing this lovely young lady helped me for much of the time I spent in the store (which always makes R.E.I. members in the know feel like royalty). Her guidance eliminated my incredibly ability to get sidetracked by the usual bling that I have wanted to check out (basically she stopped me from wasting my own time which would have seen me fail to meet my own objectives). She was incredibly helpful when it came to the Patagonia jackets... even though the one for me wasn't in stock, I tried on different models of other Patagonia jackets and found the sizing of them to be similar. This made it so I could then order online with a little more sizing confidence. She also helped me with my purchase of a couple Big Agnes tents and, at the zero minute, a pair sun gloves. Now, I have been an R.E.I. shopper since the middle 90s and a member since 1997 and I absolutely love the level of game that R.E.I. employees play. They know most of the store and when they lack precise knowledge that pertains to a piece of equipment, they can easily call to someone who harbors it via a techy gadget they are wearing. It is like they are Secret Service mastering everything outdoorsy. R.E.I. has always been pretty a special store to me, and outside of Walt Disney World, it very well might be the only place I am both happy (because I got gear and I am surrounded MY PEOPLE) and sad (because I didn't see and ask questions about everything) about leaving. Anjie truly reinforced this feeling as she acted as a sort of personal shopper for me. If I return to this store, and I know I will, I hope we get to cross paths again. It was really packed when I visited. Granted, it was a Saturday, so it was expected. They had several cash registers open at checkout, which made checking out shorter than I anticipated. The employees there were really friendly and helpful. It's easy to get lost and confused with the large selection of gear and having a second opinion made looking for equipment easier. I also found out that this location is dog-friendly, so that's definitely a plus! I was helped out by one of the store associates, Jerry after I bought the REI TrailBreak 60. I ordered it online during the huge sale they had and brought it in to get it fitted. Jerry was helpful, attentive, and knowledgeable. He started off by making sure the length of the bag was a proper fit for my torso by adjusting the bag. Afterwards, he gave me a crash course on how to properly pack and distribute weight in a loaded backpacking bag. 30 lbs was loaded on the bag and I got to walk around the store for a couple of laps to see if it needed anymore adjustments. I need to tell people REI membership program is a scam. I hope the story here can be shared and make REI changed its practice. I found $170 sleeping bag yesterday and the cashier offered me a $30 membership to get 10% discount, at the time REI gave me a $30 gift card. I paid $170 sleeping bag plus $30 membership. I left the store and found there is no 10% credit and the $30 store credit will expire within 40 days. I went back to the store the next day to return the sleeping bag because REI told me that the 10% credit of the $170 sleeping bag will be reward 6 months later. And if I return the sleeping bad I will lose $30 of the membership plus the gift card. $30 membership (which I paid) is coupled with the purchase of the sleeping bag... What the heck you need to buy stuff to earn the right of BUYING a membership... no wonder Costco will continue to grow and REI is closing their stores each year. This is my first time at REI and being in here is so inspiring. As someone who enjoys the outdoors, but has minimal experience with outdoorsy activities like camping, hiking, spelunking, etc. REI allows me to live vicariously through all the posters and quality equipment on site. The staff here are pretty friendly and ready to assist you with your needs. I came here for a pair of Hoka shoes for my mom, which I called in advance to have held for me. Eric who works the shoes section was great and came by to make sure the shoes worked out. The process was really smooth and I got the shoes at a discounted rate, so that was a plus. They have a members program, and for a one-time fee of $30, you have special member's access to discounts and extended return policies. If you don't have one, I recommend asking a staff member who assisted you (and that you like) about this program so they can get some kind of referral bonus for referring you. I will be back, hopefully with an outdoor adventure planned. read more

Since I was younger, my family and I have been frequenting this REI for all our outdoor and day-to-day needs. From footwear, clothing layers, insulated water bottles, camping accessories and now, bikes. Though my commute to work has been great on my electric scooter, its operating cost (namely, electrical) has become more noticeable these summer months. Moreover, as the wet season approaches quickly, I have been looking for a commuting alternative that's both safe and functional. In these last few weeks, I've identified a folding bike as the optimal solution. Happened to stop by to peruse REI during their Labor Day sale and stumbled upon a sweet red foldable Tern Bike. The representative working the floor by the name of Matt was kind enough to give this uncultured bike swine a tutorial of the folding mechanism of this bike as well as a few pointers when it came to riding/safety based on my personal needs. Needless to say, I was sold at all the bells and whistles on this bike. Heck, I even managed to snag a sweet Thousands bike helmet on sale as well as a Krypotine U-Lock per reccomendation from another employee working the floor. Overall, I love REI and will gladly pay the extra money for their knowledgeable customer service, solid gear, and wide selection of alternative gear options. I always feel like I walk out of every purchase having had the opportunity to have all my questions answered and stones overturned. Not to mention, 10% annual REI dividends?! Went looking for a travel backpack. They had so many options. I love this place when it comes to outdoor travel goods. REI does not sacrifice quality. Their merchandise is top tier. I tried out an Osprey Fairpoint 40L travel backpack. The harnessing system was quite good as it adjusted according to your torso size. It had beefy waist harness and an adjustable sternum harness as well. It was a pretty nice fit for me, but I was just comparing my options. I wanted to try a Cotopaxi 35L but they were out of stock. I have till May to decide. I went on to browse the whole store and was amazed at their quality of goods. read more
