I have been a long time customer of REI. I've ordered all sorts of equipment and supplies here and I highly recommend you become a member because it is much easier should you have any issues or need a return. Also members get some nice perks and fantastic discounts. My only complaint is you really should do all the research before making a purchase. Recently their Quality of tents has changed drastically which is sad for how much they cost. Customer service is usually great at this location; however busier days can affect staff availability. We recently shipped our rooftop cargo carrier here bc it was a great price and they help you remove the box and load it into your call or even install it. I recommend REI out of most of the outdoor stores in our area as their prices and policies are far superior. read more

So I went in here for the first time needing to get a solar charger. For an army training event. I had the pleasure of having Ken help me pick out exactly what I needed and spent the time to talk to me and figure out my needs and then when I went to go check out I had Jennifer take the time and help me out, as well as explain to me the membership program and answer, my questions. Yes, I love REI but time and time again when I come in looking to purchase gear the sales associates are beyond clueless!!! The only time I've had good customer service was with a sales associate named Chris. He helped me out in the purchase of an Osprey day hike backpack. Chris was beyond informative and gave me all the ins and outs of Osprey. I came back the following week this time looking for a backpacking backpack also from Osprey but Chris wasn't available so another gentleman helped me. He didn't take my measurements, he asked zero questions. Uh, aren't you supposed to fit me for a backpack? He must've thought he was doing a fantastic job because he gave me a flyer to apply to the REI credit card with his ID number attached. So I left empty handed and made my two Osprey backpacks purchase at CAMPMOR (MUCH BETTER STORE!) I come back this time looking for a new sleeping bag. I asked for an associates help. Again, same story. Completely clueless doesn't know what to recommended, doesn't know what brands they carry in store, he has no knowledge. So once again I make my purchases else where. It's very unfortunate that the employees are uninformed and lack BASIC "sales associates" skills. They don't know the product they are selling and are driving business out. For me as a consumer it's unfortunate because I have their rewards program but barely make use of it because when I come to buy I leave empty handed due to their lack of informing the consumer. On my last visit I was placing an online order with an associate "JR". He was so dismissive and talked to me like I was bothering him. I was expecting to hear him yawn since helping me was such an issue. This place is terrible. I feel bad for those employees who work here and love the outdoors which translates into helping customers and educate you on the products. I hope the manager/corporate takes this into account and hire those with knowledge and has their employees trained better instead of having them just ringing you up at the cash register with their attitudes. I used to like this store but I will never shop there again. I went there a few weeks ago to check out their fanny packs, sling bags, and some bicycle accessories. It was a weekday morning and when I pulled into their parking lot I noticed there was no line to get into the store, just a worker hanging out under the tents that they have set up to provide some shade for their customers who are waiting in line to get in. All weekend, every time that I drove by, there was a very long line, so I figured there shouldn't be a problem to enter the store. I parked my car and sat in it for a few minutes while taking a phone call, the whole time watching the mask-less employee casually leaning on the building by the front door. I finished my phone call, got out of my car, and walked up to the entrance of the store. As I did this, I noticed the employee stood up, moved away from the wall, put on his mask and assumed a position of authority near the entrance. I walked up to the entrance with a mask on and politely asked him if I needed to wait or if I could go right in. With massively uncalled for attitude, he told me that I was not wearing my mask correctly. WHAT??? Are you kidding me??? I've been in at least 50 stores over the past few months with the same exact mask worn exactly as I was wearing it. I knew immediately that this guy was on a power trip. My reply was to just look at him in disbelief. He then asked me what I was planning on buying. Since I planned at looking at several different items, I picked one and said "a bag" while thinking "why is it any of your business?" So out of sincere curiosity, I asked him "why does that matter?" With a condescending attitude, he then told me that they are practicing social distancing and only letting in so many people per department. I couldn't help but think "who would make up such a stupid rule?" Since when do people walk into a store and then only stay in one department and not walk around multiple parts of a store? That made absolutely no sense to me and seemed like a ridiculous restriction. Then he asked me if I needed to try on the bag and before I could answer, told me that I couldn't do that because there was no one working on fittings. I told him that I didn't need anyone to fit the bag for me and I wouldn't know if I wanted to try one on until I saw what selection they had. At that point, I got fed up because throughout this entire pandemic situation, I had never met such resistance to allow a customer to shop in a store. Add that to the employee's superiority problem, and it felt like I was getting the runaround and he did not want me to shop there. I, in turn, no longer wanted to give that store my money. I can not consciously support an organization that would hire and train someone like that and would put such ridiculously restrictive policies in place. I ended up walking away from the store vowing to never shop there again. I won't. To further explain how incompetent the employee was who was working the front door, he didn't know the difference between a bag and a pack. Packs, as in backpacks, need to be fitted. I never once said I was looking for a pack or a backpack. I said a bag. That's a big difference for an outdoors sporting goods store. Avoid REI. read more

Went to REI today to purchase boots for an upcoming trip to GSM. I made my way to footwear and waited about 10 minutes before asking a sales associate for their assistance (didn't want to bother anyone who was already with a customer). I approached an older gentleman who wasn't attending to a guest and asked for some help -- the man rudely told me he saw me there and he'd be right with me so I went back to take a seat. About 10 minutes later the man returns and starts helping another guest who arrived after I did. I'm pretty patient so I sat there for another 20 minutes (not being acknowledged btw) until deciding to leave. To add, the sales associate was chatting about the weather with no regard to the fact that I've been waiting there for 40 minutes. Very disappointing. My bf raved about his experience when he purchased his boots; I wish I could've have done the same. read more

Good place to shop for all your outdoor needs. Not as many sales on big brands (Patagonia, Marmot) as I've seen elsewhere. You can get some decent bike gear here at good prices (props to the awesome Camelbak insulated bottles - the best!). Problem here is, as a cyclist I would not recommend buying a bike from them in store. They carry okay brands, but personally you are better off going to a specialist store to make your purchases. The prices are better and you will probably find better frames. Same deal with accessories. But they do have a good selection of other items especially for hikes, camping et al. Rei is similar to a LL Bean location a lot of outdoor gear at a expensive price but great quality. Though you can find certain things for a reasonable price. I came in here looking for a bicycle and found nothing at a reasonable price. The cheapest bike was about $400, yes I understand it is great quality but its just not realistic for me and it wasn't realistic for me to come here looking for a regular bike. All the isles are jam packed with everything from camping needs to freeze dried ice cream. The staff is extremely helpful and ready to assist you with any questions you may have. I'm happy with the selection of products here, less so with the customer service. There weren't many people working the floor, and those who were kind of stood in one area. That said, dad, sister, and I did get asked whether we needed help by both people. There is a great variety of outdoor gear. I've been looking for a backpack and was excited to test drive some of the filled packs, but I am bummed the backpacks weren't better labeled according to capacity. The backpacks also didn't have price tags on them, and the closest scanner was out of commission. I agree that their merchandise appears to be more expensive than competitors, but I lucked out and tried a jacket on the day before Thanksgiving and was able to purchase it for 50% off the day after. Just had a horrible CS experience with their "sales" manager Richard Byrne refused to let me use a coupon on previous purchase from 2 weeks earlier Although the coupon said nothing about not being able too it, refused to return/ re buy the item. Bad customer service. Ordered item for pickup at store because it showed up "in stock". Paid for it in advance. Drove an hour to Paramus to pick it up. Waited in line ( 10 minutes) to get it. When I got to the cashier (Blaise) she told me was not " in the store yet" and I'd have to wait for an email telling me it was. She was prepared to send me away. I pressed for more information and asked her to see if it was perhaps in the store already as it shows in stock online. She left and came back less than 5 minutes later and said she had found it BUT I would have to go back to the end of the line to buy it. I was like " but I and standing here and I just prepaid and have already been waiting." She sent me to the back of the line again. When I reached the front of the line for the 2nd time Blaise address me as if she had just greeted me, told me I need to pay for the item again and call customer service to cancel the past item I paid for AND asked me if I also wanted to join a membership club. I was like " really? Thanks, no thanks". No active empathy job ownership or sincerity in this young staff member... read more

There are plenty of great staff here, especially the one woman behind the pack fitting area who was great and very patient with me buying my first pack. But this review is for a separate transaction. The staff I dealt with was pretty rude and dismissive. I had 3 items to return (one was due to a lack of warmth and one was a gift for someone else that was no longer wanted). Great, no problem with that. But the last item was something that I used ONE time and was essentially new, had the tags and everything. I was returning this item because I found it significantly cheaper elsewhere and could save almost $100. When I told the cashier this (which i did so they can resell it as "excellent condition/like new"), the reply (in a very snarky attitude) was, "You know, just because you found it cheaper elsewhere doesnt mean you can return it. But we'll take it back for you anyway." LOL seriously, says who? And you wouldnt do that either if you could save $100? give me a break. I was very taken back by that comment, I've never had that happen before at REI. If that was the case, I don't think every other retailer on the planet would offer price matching/adjustmens when a recently purchased item goes on discount? Keep in mind i paid to be a member here with their "stellar one year return policy." Would you have rather I use the item for a year, then return it on the 364th day for a full refund and force you to sell it at a significant discount? I am glad the item was split between 3 different payment methods and your scanners weren't working which frustrated the hell out of you people and required several of you to figure out, you deserved it. DO NOT ORDER BIKES! I ordered a bike for my 9 year old. I called ahead, just to make sure that he will have the bike relatively soon. I was told if the bike is in stock in that location, I will be able to pick it up soon. Website stated that it's in stock. Week later I received an e-mail that the bike is on it's way to the Paramus Location. (Oh so it wasn't in stock!) Waited another week and a half, and stopped by the store to ask if I can pick up the bike even if it's still in the box. It was 10 minutes before closing, but I wasn't let in. The associate at the door said that he thinks I will have to wait at least another 3 weeks to pick up the bike, and they are not allowed to give it to me unassembled. My kid wanted to enjoy his bike in the summer. 3 or more weeks waiting defeats the purpose. I'll look into canceling this order. read more

The employees there care to help you get the right gear and will measure you personally for backpacks, show you how to adjust your pack, go through options with you, camping list, etc. The patience the employees have is genuine because you can see they are passionate about what they are selling you for your backpacking trip, hobby, etc. Each of the over 10 times I have visited REI of Paramus I have been treated with this great customer service. The products are moderate to high end pricing at REI and you get what you pay for. High quality products. Everything I have ever bought from REI is worth the money and is in condition like the first day I bought it. Some items I have from REI; a thermarest woman's sleeping pad for backpacking, a 65 liter woman's Osprey backpack [lifetime warranty], a bike, a roof bike rack system, go pro accessories, water filtration system, camel back, hiking pants.waterproof hiking shoes, and double all of it for what my boyfriend has also. We would NOT get any of these items elsewhere, quality staple pieces I believe to be of value for adventures-- they are worth the money when it is providing a serious function of comfort and utility. I wouldn't cheap out and get these major items at Walmart --- you buy cheap you buy twice. REI will also service your bike in house. Great service will get it right or do it again to satisfaction. All items purchases are satisfaction or get your money back up to one year. Sometimes it takes awhile to test out the quality of a product and it's value in your life, so I really appreciate this policy by REI. Rewards and discounts - Definitely sign up to become a member at REI. You will receive 10% back on all of your full price purchases in the form of dividends [store credit]. My boyfriend and I racked up nearly $500 in dividend at REI after all of our purchases. It paid for some of our items for our most recent backpacking trip. Saving money is usually a common goal among us so I give REI an A+ for their rewards program. Further more REI carries all of their old inventory in the REI garage at a discount. Once in a while I will receive two coupons in the mail. 20% off any item on website, 20% off any item in the REI garage section. I was about to get my 65 Liter backpack for almost $100 less ! You can't go wrong stepping into REI. You're going to have a great customer experience from genuine friendliness of employees, quality products, and rewards back on the money you spend. I usually go to the REI in Soho but wanted to check out the location in Paramus. I've been a few times and noticed the last time I went that they had a lot more stuff (or maybe they used to the space better). The staff is very friendly in helping you find what you're looking for, and they even had really cute vintage-looking posters of a few famous national parks that you can take home. This location isn't as large as the one in Soho, which is three floors. Everything is on one floor here. I haven't had to purchase anything in awhile because I did a big spree back in June at the Soho location before my trip to the Smoky Mountains. But I like to stop by once in awhile and peruse. read more

Lemme tell you a little story: Employee (gaunt, bearded, 40s-ish white guy) looks at me with undisguised disgust and pointedly moves away so as not to have to help me. Smiley woman comes forward, casts puzzled looks between him and me, and offers to help me. I answer. She turns to dude and says, lightly, gaily, "Hey, ---, why didn't you help her?" I must say every time I go in to REI with a budget in mind it is hardly ever adhered to. There are so many wonderful items and the best camping/hiking snacks are available to purchase here. I get stuck in clothing every time and wind up with practically new wardrobes for the season as their selection of clothing is quite huge. Between clothing, camping equipment and food I Always overspend but this is where being an REI member comes in handy. I almost always get a significant discount and love the check or going in and getting a huge amount off based on membership. It is also easy to leave with an unexpected new headlamp or camping fold out chair and campfire games that are completely unnecessary. I Love that tents can be rented, which I have rented before when camping with 6+ people who travel from different countries sans tents of their own. Tents are easy to set up and good quality and prices for a weekend of renting. Staff is helpful and knowledgeable. read more

I've bought 3 bikes from REI. The first two from Marlton and just recently from Paramus. I drove over an hour to pick this one up. They wheeled it out to my car for me and helped me load it in. When I got home, I reinstalled the front wheel and realized the brakes were adjusted with the front wheel installed backwards (tire is directional). Then I realized a component was missing. Called them up and they offered to ship me the part. No explanation as to why they failed to install it. Half of the missing part arrived and when i called back to ask about the remainder of the missing part i was basically told "we don't have it, your problem now. call the manufacturer". Manufacturer is responsive but doesn't excuse the lousy service. Way to treat your co-op members. read more

REI are REI's.. If you never been, you should check one out. This one is like every other one I've been to. Tons of outdoor gear for various outdoor activities. They are a bit pricey but usually have a nice selection. Campmor is nearby so check them out if you're bargain hunting. This store was great on my last visit. Workers were friendly and helpful. Better yet, I got the best deal there. I received my dividend check from REI- become a member totally worth it. I picked up a pair of NRS neoprene booties for kayak fishing. They were last year's model. $50 cut down to $14.38. Perfect condition. With a 20% off coupon on top of that I ended up getting cash back. A good day. Nice store but better deals!!! I've been here 3 times in the last month, and each time they were having a new sale! The selection is really good....they have EVERYTHING, from compasses, to tents, to chacos, to bicycles, to crash pads, to Stand-up paddle boards, to patagonia apparel, to energy bars, to padded bike shorts, to sunglasses, to yoga pants, to nalgenes...you get the picture. They have better clothes than campmoor, and higher quality brands for most other things. Prices are actually about the same as campmoor, and if you are a member you get dividends. The store is light and airy and well spaced so I can spend an entire hour there...unlike all the other crowded shops on Rt 17. read more

The staff here is always really knowledgeable and attentive. A couple years ago, I was new to cycling and brought outdoor shoes instead on indoor shoes. Yea, stupid, I know! I quit cycling and now I'm back at it. I needed new shoes recently. The staff helped me pick great shoes and put my clips in. I was out he door in no time. The staff and my mom thought it was hilarious. Eh, me, not so much This store is always clean and organized. Some apparel can be found cheaper other places, so shop around. ItI received a Fitbit for a present and I couldn't get it to work. When I went to the store the couldn't far ot ti work either, but a new one came out and it cost a few extra dollars so I bought it. I liked the Fitbit so I was buying one for a friend. I went to REI and finally got someone to unlock the case and get one. There was a 20 gift card and I saw some sun glasses with 20% off. I get to cashier and he's inexperience. No discount and no 20 coupon and he needs to find a glass case. For 15 minutes he's looking for a cade trying to access my coupon and give me my discount for the glasses. Now I find out the coupon isn't good for 5 days. I canceled the glassed and will not go back. I don't mind paying extra for better service, leave the attitudes at home REI employees read more

Great customer service, and sales associates are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable as always. One thing I noticed about this one is that this store has a lot more clothing items on its sales rack -- which is great. I only gave an "A-OK" or 3 stars because it is not a store that I frequent (not a super outdoors kind of person.) The items are more expensive than other stores but you can not beat their customer service or return policy. I don't mind paying extra as long as I know I will be happy with my (pricey) purchase at the end. read more
