This is a sweet REI. People who work here are so friendly and the place has such a feeling of possibility. That said, REI is expensive for your outdoor gear yo! Hiking shoes here range more from $100-$200, often more north of $150, which is real expensive. Their return policy is so great though you can't help but love them for putting a dent in your wallet. Catch those REI Garage Sales for better deals. Seek their expert staff for helpful help in figuring out exactly what you need, you're just going to have to pay a tad extra for it. read more

My first time at REI. I was planning on buying a backpack and hiking sandals. The employees in the backpack section were nice and asked if I needed any assistance. When I went to the shoe section, the staff were busy. I was patiently waiting for one to be available, standing at the counter. I was never acknowledge or they would pass right by me. One looked at me and kept walking to the back. I put the stuff down and walked out. read more

I love the people at this store, but I strongly discourage anyone to make a large purchase via their website. I bought a bike on August 14 and REI charged my credit card $2450. My credit card issuer immediately deducted the amount from my balance and the charge was listed as pending which is typical for any charge. Fast forward 6 days and inexplicably, REI charged my card a second time for $2450, This exceeded my credit limit so the charge was refused by my credit card provider.I then received an email from REI threatening to cancel my order if I didn't provide another form of payment for a bike I in essence had purchased a week earlier. I called REI customer service and was told this happens regularly. I was instructed to call the store, cancel the order and wait for my initial charge of $2450 to be moved from pending to a credit back to my card and then I could go to the store and purchase the bike. I then suggested that maybe customer service could call the store for me, which they did, in addition to telling the store not to sell my bike to someone else. (I just gave myself a migraine writing this because REI's e-commerce process is so pathetic). Finally, I contacted multiple key executives via email to express my frustration about 1.5 days ago, My email has been opened over 40 times as of me writing this review and I haven't received a single response. I'm assuming the executives I contacted are too busy at clown college to respond to an extremely frustrated co-op member. In summary, avoid large REI e-commerce purchases. read more

RUDE Salesperson!!! Went in last week to attempt to purchase an 1000+ canoe, attempted to buy online since march with nothing but issues with website. Now no stock, figured with COVID things were back ordered. So I went to the Paradise Valley store and went up to the salesperson standing there in front of the store entrance and asked him "Hey question... when are you folks ever going to get canoes back in stock" He looks at me and replies sarcastically " I don't know, when are we" At that point I replied ok Ill go somewhere else... " He stated "OK" and walked away... This is not the first time that myself and my daughter has had employees with attitude at this store !! This is my go to place for that fun gift you can't find anywhere for that fun person who has everything. Amazing water bottles, awesome employees, great options for nearly all outdoor activities. I do find that the pricing is a little high for me - but it's worth it when you see the results from the quality of the product and the tailored advice you get from outdoor experts. REI is one of those stores that I used to just wander in and buy something. That something could be a utility tool, a down jacket, a wool hat or something that would catch my attention. They sell a variety of different outdoor brands including Patagonia, Kuhl, Columbia, Arc Teryx and of course their own brand. Now I just buy from them online. That way you can peruse the REI Coop where prices are reduced, or get your exact size. read more

Went here cause I needed new hiking shoes, and the local store I normally frequent doesn't have anything that fits my needs. In fact, I had to return what I bought because my feet were burning, and I don't mean from the heat. My feet hurt!! And that was after a less than two-hour hike! But I digress. ... John C. helped me. If you need hiking shoes, talk to John C. Not just any John since there is probably more than one. He looked at my feet and told me what sort of shoes I needed. He gave plenty of tips on this and that, which I won't go into. I have hiked once with my new shoes. I think these could be a keeper. R.E.I. is currently having their annual(??) 20%-25% off sale. Came here to pick up hiking shoes for my bf and buy some insoles and hiking socks. The line outside for social distancing moved fast and it was honestly an amazing experience in the shoe section. It's normally hard to get great service when buying shoes because the employees are normally too busy trying to help everyone. They had 4 benches and only 4 people/couples could be in the shoe section at once. The product knowledge was amazing and we were so happy with the selection and service. I also received outstanding customer service while I searched for new insoles for my hiking boots. I love this place and I can't express how happy I am after coming here. read more

Want to play outside? REI has pretty much anything and everything you could possibly need, as well as lots of things you probably don't need but that look really cool. I was first introduced to this location shortly after moving to AZ. A visiting friend who loves the outdoors suggested that I get out and go hiking as a way to explore my new home state. Off to REI we went and I ended up with a new blue Camelbak (the girl version!) as a housewarming gift. Cool! Well, a new Camelbak requires new shoes, right? I returned the following week to acquire my Very First Pair of Hiking Shoes Ever. No more cross-trainers for me - I meant business! The woman who assisted me was extremely patient, helpful and informative. She even had me try a few pairs on the fake rock in the shoe section to ensure a correct and comfortable fit. I love my Merrills! Are they pretty? No. Have they taken me on a lot of great hikes in the past year? Yes! Since then I have been back quite a few times for various items, and each time have encountered friendly staff. Most recently I purchased a pair of Pearl Izumi spin shoes (25% off during the annual sale! Yeah!) and even though the store was packed, I was helped quickly and the clips were installed within 5 minutes. What else do I like? Items ordered online can be shipped to the store free of charge. Also, the member co-op program provides an annual dividend on purchases and % off 'members only' coupons. Need a life vest for your dog? They have them! Does your cat need a tent? They have those too! Oh wait, those are just little display models... read more

REI is with out a doubt one of the most reliable places to find high quality camping, hiking, outdoor fun gear you can find anywhere. They are always one of our routine stops when planning an outdoor trip. They seem to have the things their competitors can only order if needed. One of the best things about REI is their shoe sale. You can pick up great shoes/boots during their sale. This last trip we picked up some new Keens that they were discontinuing for 50% off! REI is a must stop by and shop when planning your next camping or outdoors trip! read more

I no longer trust REI. I have been a faithful customer for 14 years. I tried to return some hiking poles today. When I purchased them I was told if they bent under normal wear and tear they would be replaced. They bent on a hike 3 weeks ago, I was using them as hiking poles. When I tried to return them today I was told that that was just normal wear and tear and they would not replace, just bend them back, THAT was not what i was told when I purchased them. The problem is I no longer trust the integrity of these poles and will not use them again. I shopped REI for a reason, the warranty. If I am going to receive cheap, shoddy products with no return policy, I can spend less elsewhere. read more

REI, you had such a good thing going...why, oh why... Sometimes an event lives great because it offers so much more than it intends. When it's a store putting it on for the sake of it's customers (and I'd like to think as a thank you for loyalty) it goes far beyond a vehicle for making a sale. We have loved the Garage Sale that this location put on for so very long. We would get in line at 5am with the other die hards and laugh at the people waking up in their sleeping bags (while secretly wishing that we had the cojones to do the same since they were going to get the VERY best deals). A couple years running Krispy Kreme came across the street with boxes of donuts to cheer our early morning wait. But it was the people that made it. We'd hang out in the early morning hours with other outdoor enthusiasts trading stories and secrets about local trails, lakes and camping sites. ...and then, with nervous excitement we'd charge into the parking lot like mad men, snatching up sleeping bags and hiking shoes for pennies on the dollar, thanking the REI gods that we, the chosen few, the members, would have such an opportunity to feed our equipment cravings at unheard of prices. Flash forward to yesterday...I evidently missed the memo that the "new and improved" garage sale was happening in the store, up in the clinic room. Clutching my 20% off coupon we made our way through the crowded parking lot, J. with visions of using it for a new bike seat while I ready to fight him for a chance to restock my hiking sock drawer at 20% savings. We walked in to signs advertising the garage sale and a very long line of people waiting to go up stairs for their finds of the year. J. got in line and I went to hunt for new feet cushions. Several minutes later, he found me to let me know that he had to get out of line to get tickets for the sale, but was assured that it was a 30 minute wait and he was going to the bike department until our numbers were called. I was dubious...the line looked like it was for an E-ticket ride at Disneyland and the people in it weren't looking any happier than if it was 98º with screaming kids at said park. Long story short...it was 2 full hours before we were called to that upstairs secret clubhouse. Once there, we were told we had a very generous 10 minutes to shop...we picked up a few things. set them down in frustration when neither of us could get to the clothes and walked out of the store empty handed. REI management, this is an epic fail in my opinion. You turned a wonderful community event into a vehicle to hold your members hostage in hopes of their making full price purchases while waiting for a disappointing chance to make the killer buy that we dreamed yearly about...and worse yet, you didn't even make the sale that we intended...you didn't sell the $53 bike seat, you didn't sell the $17.95 socks but you did manage to piss off a couple of members who have been on your roster for 25 years. Sometimes a sales event is more than the sum of the profits or in this case the decluttering of the returns bin. Sometimes it's a way to show your customers the loyalty they've shown you... we heard repeatedly that this was much easier on the employees and management than the old parking lot sale. This was much harder on us as consumers and so unsatisfying to wait two hours for a 10 minute opportunity. The parking lot sale was one day of chaos for the employees a couple times a year...is that too much to ask from a store that we've been loyal too for half our lives? read more

Dudes in the bike shop are ignorant, don't care, and don't know the term customer service. Had a tire replaced on our Electra. Told them to keep the bike as long as needed. Received a call the next day, bike was ready. They were out of the white wall tires, so they replaced it with a smaller unmatching tire - handlebars were lower because of this, not comfortable. Would not replace - Terrible Terrible Terrible - called me a week later to tell me they had the white wall tires in. I told them, I asked them originally to keep the bike as long as needed. I'm not typically one to write a review, however, I feel so angry about today that I couldn't let it go. A month ago I was in REI making a few larger purchases for my big hike I have coming up. During this time I was talked into a $30 REI membership. I figured why not since I had more gear to purchase plus they were giving me a $30 gift card. Essentially I was getting my money back. Little did I know that the gift card had an expiration date. It expired 2 days prior to my visit to the store. The store absolutely would not honor the gift card. I don't live close to REI so this turned into a wasted trip for me. This type of customer service feels like a bait and switch. While I understand that it's only $30, it's a matter of how it was handled. I'm frustrated at the company for not standing by their offer of $30, and for not letting people know that their gift cards come with expiration dates. Again, it's only $30 but I won't spend another dime in that store. I came home and began making some of my other purchases straight from the manufacturer. REI lost a customer over $30. read more

While visiting your store in search of a pair of boots I made a rather alarming discovery. I found a wonderful pair of boots and asked for a size 14. An employee, 'politely' informed me, that I had picked up a woman's boot. A woman's boot, no! I was in shock and apparently so was his coworker, who spent the brief interaction staring at my feet. How embarrassing that I had requested a size 14 in a woman's boot. Little did I know, until the man explained, that women's shoes "top out" at 10.5. My shocking discovery is that I'm a woman, 5'10", with big ass feet (it's really no surprise, I'm also at the age of "having purchased shoes before"). Perhaps it was the hat that I wore to cover my undone hair, or the sports bra under my heavy jacket, while in a rather lazy menstruation haze, that covered my feminine wares and led to this man correcting my boot choice. Or perhaps the shoe salesmen should learn a word I call 'proportion'. read more

I've been a HUGE REI fan for years and have handed them quite a bit of cash for my various outdoor obsessions. I spent a small fortune on sport climbing gear at the San Diego store from about 1996 to 2001. That said, strangely enough, this location's inventory only meets my needs about half the time. I've twice gone by in the past year or two for some Camelbak products and discovered what I'd consider odd gaps in the available selection. Given that this is Arizona, are so many more people interested in non-insulated metal bottles that can't easily fit ice cubes than insulated bottles with large mouths? Even today I went by and their hiking-style (vs. bicycling-specific) hydration packs stock (Camelbak or otherwise) was lacking. I decided to peruse their trail running shoes and, again, just seemed like the choices are limited (or perhaps very specific to the majority of their shoppers?) The customer service I've experienced has been good but I just don't know if I'll bother to visit this store anymore. I've been to the smaller Tempe location a couple times when I've happened to be in the area, but it's too far away for me to make it a REI-only trip... =( read more

TIP: First thing you want to do when you go to REI is buy a Co-op membership. It's only $20 for a LIFETIME membership and it gets you an annual dividend based on how much you spend during the previous year (typically around 10% back), and access to their Garage Sales. They have a great selection of outdoor gear here. Sure, in some cases the prices may shock you, but you pay for quality and when you're out in the middle of nowhere relying on your gear to keep you warm and safe, you'll be happy that you paid a little extra for the good stuff! They do have less expensive alternatives as well. Aside from the selection, the one thing that I really appreciate at REI, especially at this location, is their staff. I have always found them to be friendly and knowledgeable. They know the gear and they know what you'll need for your trip, because they've used the gear on all of their own trips. I've never had a bad experience there and I look forward to more adventures!! (Note: No, I don't work there!) read more

REI is quickly becoming my ultimate guilty pleasure. If I'm not walking through the front doors, I'm scouring the website for some sort of outdoor equipment that I MUST HAVE. There are always tons of employees on the sales floor and everyone is super friendly. If you aren't asking someone for help, they'll track you down and making sure that you are aware they are there to answer any questions. Everyone who works there is an outdoor enthusiast of some type, whether it be camping, biking, backpacking, etc. If you are in need of specific help you are guaranteed to find someone who has knowledge in the area of expertise you need. My girlfriend recently purchased a Columbia vest, only to have the seam rip a month later. Returns? No problem. They didn't have her size in the store to exchange but they found one online and sent to our house. When you checkout you have to opportunity to sign up for a membership. I *think* it's only $20 but don't quote me on that. You end up getting member only benefits, coupons, and a divided once a year based on how much you spend. There are also classes and don't forget the entry into the yard sale. Love REI. I really want to go shopping now. read more

I really like REI, but this was the first time in an REI in Arizona. I could not believe it! An outdoor store that does not allow concealed carry. Wow! I have been in many REI stores, but this is the first one with concealed carry not allowed. I don't know if this is new for them, is just in Arizona, or this store manager has an attitude. Yahoo, Amazon has everything I wanted at a slightly lower price, so you know where I will spend my money. read more

My favorite outdoors outfitters! My number one place to buy camping gear, hiking gear, and clothing not so much. We came to the Garage sale last week. Their garage sale is much more organized than the Tempe location. People line up and you get a ticket so then you don't have to wait in line. Obviously the people who got their first gets the tickets first. They let in 30 people at a time for 15 mins and work their way down the line. I feel like 15 people for 15 minutes may have been a bit easier to move around upstairs.. Since there is not much room to move around. Overall, we got a lot of great deals and spent a fortune! Now we have all the gear we need for hiking, camping, rock climbing, and everything else! read more

One bad thing about this place-I always leave buying more than I planned on. There is no such thing as self control at REI. I recently had a very disappointing and unfortunate encounter at Phx REI. I was given hiking socks as Xmas gift sadly the gifter paid cash, not member and they did not keep receipts. While it may be bigger and have lots of things hanging from the ceiling, I do not like this REI as much as the one in Tempe. It's way more pretentious and getting good service is about as common as seeing someone in Scottsdale without Uggs and Daisy Dukes on. However, sometimes I'm in the area and sometimes they have things the other store doesn't. I strictly go here to pick things up and leave as quickly as possible. read more

REI is letting the nature conservancy stand outside and attempt to stop all customers entering and exiting the building to solicit. I feel bad saying this as I don't disagree with the cause, but just one too many times today being stopped by a door-to-door salesman at a business, and would like for REI to be a pleasant experience. I have always loved REI where ever I may be. While I usually shop at the Tempe location I was up in PV on this day and came here. I was looking for a few items for an upcoming trip and a nice travel purse/bag with a slash-proof strap. Having looked at REI's online selection i was hoping to find much of the same in store locally. I found a few items I needed and they were having some great clearance sales in the womens clothing section (talked myself out of several items), I still did not find a the purse/bag I wanted. Shopping for a pair of road running shoes I picked three types I wanted to try on and set them aside while waiting for an associate to assist in retrieving my size. My two year old saw the shoes and grabbed a pair from the bench I was on and brought them to me (as to help me put on my shoes like a two year old does) At this time an employee came up and snatched the shoes from my son and said in a condescending and aggressive tone "oh no he CANNOT have these." And put them on the already disheveled display wall; walking past me and my wife without asking if we had any questions or needed any help. The lack of professionalism, understanding, patience and wanting to help a customer was unreal. I shop here often being it's close by and my home. There is no shortage of outdoor equipment establishments. Yours just happens to be convenient. Unfortunately I feel like my business and wanting to try on multiple shoes and bringing my family has inconvenienced your employees. Hopefully Chris can learn to respect her customers and her business and learn from this. read more

If you like the outdoors...you will like the indoors here!! From camping gear to fishing and more....they have a lot of high-end gadgets that will make your outdoor experience even better. I once went in to look at some camping cookware and I think I was in there for an hour and a half and I barely cracked the surface. I think the key to REI is that whatever your sport ofroutdoor enjoyment - REI will make it even more comfortable and enjoyable. Hey you might even find a new sport while you are there! read more

This is my REI, and has been for at least 10 years. Let me tell you why I like this store just fine! I can almost always find what I am looking for, and they carry some oddball items which are difficult to find elsewhere. I have overall had good customer service. I've received invaluable information and tips over the years. Employees have introduced me to products that I now love, and it wasn't about "selling" an expensive product; rather, educating me about items that would make the specific outing better in some way. For example: BodyGlide for anti-chafing, with sun screen- great for 5 day river trips, long hikes, where you can get friction irritation from life vests, rough rafts, etc. My kids even are sold on it. Ultra light thin wool running socks for running and hiking. Feet stay dry and blister free, and are totally worth the price, and they last forever. And check out the clearance racks on every visit, if you have time. I've picked up, over the years a number of fast-drying SPF shirts and the like for rock-bottom prices off of these racks, which are great for hiking, water activities and more. And, when a child needs hiking boots for an overnight hike/camp event, and you discover at 8:30pm they've outgrown all of their "closed toed shoes" , you will definitely get a pair that fits if you get to the store fast enough. And. someone will help you, every time. It is VERY close to home, which is a huge plus. read more

This place is window shopping for a guy. When I walk through it's doors I can't help, but long for the great outdoors and adventure. REI is the expert when it comes to all your outdoor needs. They specialize in hiking, backpacing, moungtaineering, paddling, camping, skiing and biking. They have a wide variety of brands and also sell their own brand and their brand doesn't disappoint. I come in here every now and then to fulfill my hiking needs; get some ideas and feel inspired; or just to kinda hang out and dream I could be in some adventurous destination. There are staff members in every department and I found them to be eager to assist without being pushy sellers. I have spent time in the hiking and biking areas and found the staff to be very knowledgeable in finding equipment that accomodate your specific needs and fit your body type. They have many free in-service classes on various topics throughout the month as well as online articles and videos to educate you on your particular activity. I haven't utilized it, but rental equipment is also an option at this store. If you need outdoor gear or assistance regarding an outdoor activity, I highly recommend using REI as a main resource. read more

It's REI, what more can you say! They are always very freindly and extremely helpful! The staff knows the products they sell very well! Everytime I've been looking for something from spin shoes to a backpack, they know their stuff and that saves a lot of time by getting it right the first time.
