We've seen it evolve into the trendy outdoor store you see today, so I'm pretty familiar with this brand and the items it carries. It used to be your basic recreational equipment store for all things outdoors at more affordable prices, but now it's pushing more clothing at higher prices with some gear for specific activities. Here, you'll find two types of people shopping: people who want to LOOK like they're climbing Everest but only ever walk around the mall and the young recreationalist who lives for weekend warrioring. It's a great place to buy items for specific sports like rock climbing, water and snow sports, backpacking, and camping. However, even some camping equipment can be found at other stores. It has an excellent selection of clothing/footwear, casual and tech. *Important note: shirts can be expensive, like $90 compared to a similar one at Cabela's for much less. Cue the social signaling. If you're looking for basic camp items, try looking at Dick's or Cabela's. If you're into backpacking, then REI will carry the specific lightweight quality items you'll need. They also have great gear rental service, bike repair, and classes. Will was very patient and helpful with helping us buy our first kid bike for our daughter. Great store - the prices aren't real low for most things for sale there including footwear but it's all pretty high-quality stuff, including the flip flops/slides. You can't go wrong with REI though, they've been around forever and you'll find what you need for any outdoor activities. read more

I ordinarily love this location! I frequently purchase my running shoes from this location. Twice now, I've had Debbi in the shoe department assist me. She is incredibly unhelpful. I've asked questions of the shoes before and I'm made to feel dumb by the way she responds. Also, she doesn't pay attention and makes it seem like I'm lucky that she is even fetching the shoes to try on. I will be going to the new Beaverton REI location from this point on or shopping online. Debbi needs customer service training. read more

And wish I could give this place a five star rating, but it just hasn't been doing it for me lately. Grew up close to Berkeley, so I've been going to their stores my entire life. I have vivid memories of walking the aisles at that store when I was knee high to a grasshopper. Remember that feeling when the clothes racks were so much bigger than you? I've had my own membership for over 20 years and even use their credit card. But after getting some really great gear for years, my last seven or eight trips I've left the Tualatin store empty handed. Not just empty handed -- I had a dividend in hand that I didn't feel inspired to spend. Sad, but true. So, what's up? Do I actually have all the outdoor gear I need? That is entirely possible. When I moved to Tualatin I had some out-of-state relatives ready to visit the next day. You mean no taxes and you have a REI store in your town!!! We all need some crazy relatives, no? I love this store.. I could spend an afternoon just shopping. The staff is by far some of the best staff you could ask for. They dont judge people, they are very knowlegable and if they dont know the answer...get this... they actually ask someone who works at the store that does know the answer... They have a huge selection of outdoor products from camping to hiking... from shoes to tents... I purchased my Eagle Creek packing cubes from them while I was on my trip... I liked them so much that I bought another 3 pieces. I was traveling in Utah and wanted to purchase a new tent that was on sale. The store in Utah was out of stock but this store had my tent. I paid for it while in Utah and picked up my new tent when I got to Portland. I had the store ship my old tent back home for a mear $10.00 cant beet that. read more

This REI is really lacking in EVERY way with the exception of the location. (Right next door to Whole Foods). I find it unacceptable that they do not stock women's gear and or sizes for true back country backpacking and of more the more extreme outdoor activities. It has become more of a fashion store for yoga pants... Forget it if you wanted to buy a set of snow shoes or any kind of technical equipment for a small woman! I love this REI store. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, they have a great selection of gear, the store is large enough that it doesn't feel crowded but not too large. Sadly, I can bike to the Pearl store but I really don't like that store at all, so if I need an REI, it's Tigard. I joined REI in Berkeley in 1974, and that was the base line REI experience for me. Not a great REI, felt smaller and more expensive than other stores I've visited. The sale prices were still very high. I was looking for a raincoat on sale and couldn't find anything to fit my budget or taste. I was very disappointed. I did find some cute tops and belts that I liked that were reasonably priced, but I'm usually in REI looking for athletic gear or sports equipment, so overall I wasn't impressed. read more

I am a member of REI. But this store was a real turnoff. Sure it was busy and it took some time to find some help...BUT the first young man didn't know his merchandise like what socks do good in wicking off moisture or what patch was best for my REI parka or even where to look. But what REALLY pissed me off was how the staff grouped up and chatted while I was wandering around needing help. This was after the rush had settled down a bit. Thankfully a young man at checkout was able to answer my questions and confirm that we were buying the right stuff. Wish I had written down his name because he saved the day more or less. read more

I've been a member for a long time, and I love REI, but this store handled a simple return improperly and totally unacceptably. I bought a pair of Darn Tough socks, 2-3 years ago. I specifically bought them because it says on the packaging that they are "Unconditionally Guaranteed for Life". I actually bought 4 pair, for this very reason. One of the 4 pair has developed holes in them, so I brought them to the Tualatin, OR store to exchange them, on Saturday September 22 at around noon. The REI cashier told me that the guarantee does not actually mean they are guaranteed for "my life". That the manufacturer really means that they are only guaranteed for the normal life of the socks, which 2-3 years is apparently beyond. (WHAT?? REALLY???? That's not what it says on the packaging.) . So I asked to talk to the manager, who was not available. So I got to talk to the lead cashier or front-end lead...I don't remember his title. Anyway, he told me the same thing and that there was nothing that they could do. I asked him how REI could sell a product that says on the packaging that it is guaranteed for life, and then not accept a return of the product that is defective....blank stare. Anyway, the employees that I encountered at this store are atypical of those that I have dealt with in the past. I will certainly never go to this store again. And I hope the manager of the store takes the opportunity to speak to the employees about the quality of service that REI members expect. read more

I was shopping for an affordable race / commuter bike. I found one I liked and affordable in REI Seattle. My sister planned to go shopping in Portland and told me not to get in Seattle. I thought she had a good point there! I found a REI near by where my sister was getting her iPad and we stopped by after all other shopping was done. This REI is not big. But, they sure had the bike I wanted. In fact, they just put together the bike the today before I was there, which is really nice. The staff who helped was Don, I believe. He is experienced in biking/cycling and has done STP few times. Since I am a beginner, he didn't think it's necessary to pick the expensive stuff. Therefore, he picked reasonable and affordable tool kits, accessories, helmet, etc with me. I am a member of REI. So, I was able to test ride my new bike around the block with store vest and helmet. After picking all the accessories, the tech guy installed for me to the bike immediately. I was worried about how I can transport my bike back home and was ready to get a bike rack. However, Don was able to give me a lesson about how to take the wheels out and back (I am not sure if I still remember). We were able to put the whole bike in the trunk. He also reminded me to take my bike back to REI for Warranty tune-up after certain mileage and it's free. Overall, I had a GREAT experience shopping here. read more

Shopping in Oregon is great because there's no sales tax. To save on ski equipment, we decided to do some Christmas Eve shopping while visiting family. This REI location was the closest to Beaverton, and it was conveniently "attached" to Bridgeport Village, where we were picking up other last minute gifts (It is directly across the street, sharing a parking lot with Whole Foods.). We showed up shortly after 1 in the afternoon, desperately needing help from a ski specialist. The only guy, it appeared, working in the immediate area, was helping a couple find a jacket. I'm all about good customer service, but it shouldn't take the 30+ minutes that it did to walk in a 10 x 10 area to help a man find a heavy, waterproof jacket. Getting incredibly annoyed, I started wandering around the store near the snow sports maintenance area, searching for help. Apparently, I picked the right area to be: an associate walked by. I pointed at him: What do you know about skis? It turns out he knows everything about skis. It took him less than 10 minutes to go over the basics of skis, recommend a few good pairs of skis, and compare the skis. Then to our dismay, we found out that the turnaround time for mounting the skis was 24 hours: we only had 2.5 hours since we had to return to Seattle that next day (and REI was not open on Christmas). The associate spoke to the very accommodating ski techs, and we were able to promise our skis by closing (4:00) that same afternoon. We wandered around Bridgeport Village for a little longer, returned back to REI, and we were out before 4 with the freshly tuned and mounted skis. Road my bike here to pick up some pro gear and quick draws for rock climbing. While I was browsing one of the guys at the bike shop counter asked if the FSR outside was mine. I said yes it was. He asked if I'd bring it in. So I did. He adjusted my breaks, wheel spokes, derailers and a few other things for FREE while I was walking the rest of the store. How awesome is that? You don't get customer service like REI provides any more. When my pack fell apart after one backpacking trip in the jungle of Hawaii. They replaced it for free. When the soles on my rock shoes wore out within 2 months, they replaced them too. REI is a legit company, this specific store has always gone above and beyond for me so they will always get my return business. read more

Good God I spend a lot of time wandering this store. Anything outdoors related gear for camping, hiking, biking, etc and they have it, along with all the accessories that go with it and the proper bag to carry it in! The selection of bags is truly impressive. Two duffels large enough to carry bodies, a backpack camelback and a smaller camelback have survived many adventures over the last four years. So has all the bike gear I got on the clearance rack except the light jacket I shredded in a crash. It was a gnarly crash and thin material, other than that I consider their gear to be virtually indestructible. In fact 90% of our outdoor gear is from here. They soften the blow to our wallets by sending us a dividend check each year. Become a member and you can get a percentage back of your purchases too! Check their calendar for events and various outdoor classes. I haven't taken one yet but I keep meaning to! The staff is very knowledgable and will hook you up with the right gear for your needs. By now I think they just recognize us and let us wander around cleaning up the drool in our wake ready to answer questions if needed. I wish the prices were a touch lower but the sales are killer. Each week they have an energy bar and gel on sale. That's about the only time I find those items to be affordable. Great equipment and service, but deceptive in advertising. In large letters you'll see a sign upon entry gifting you $20 for $100 spent. The fine print says that you'll only get a $20 gift card for each purchase of an item costing more than $100. If you buy four $50 items, you will get no gift card. For anyone who doesn't already know, this is a store for people who love outdoor activities. This isn't another Dick's or Sports Authority. You're not going to find any basketball or soccer gear here. What you will find is a large selection of equipment that will help you experience nature. One of the things that I love most about REI is that the staff is super friendly, very knowledgeable and avid users of their products. If you have a question about something, come here. If you want to handle something before buying, come here. There's been a number of times that I've had questions about a product and next thing I knew they popped it out of the package and let me check it out. Then they spent a few minutes folding it up and getting it back into the packaging. Becoming a member gets you more than at most other places too. You get 10% back on most purchases, paid yearly. You get exclusive coupons and notifications of sales. You get access to outings with REI Outdoor School which is great for learning things like how to maintain your equipment or how to cook killer meals while on the trail. I will always go to REI first for any outdoor product I need. They are awesome! read more

Huge, loaded with tons of equipment, and BEST of all, I got to come during their first day of the annual sale. Booyah! At first weaving through all the sales folks was a challenge, especially by the shoes--But after seeing what the staff go through in memorizing the few lists of shoe sizes to check in the back, I was impressed. Anyone who can memorize more than three shoe sizes and come back with the correct ones, is a winner in my book. The children's shoe selection was more than I could handle. So many sizes and varieties. All the racks were well organized and not messy. My favorite part of this store (something I am not used to being from California) is the expansive selection of down available. Bought my hub the vest he wanted from months ago, still displayed at this store, and went through a super fast line--a line that wrapped around the aisle but was efficient enough to wait for a mere few minutes. read more

I'm only knocking off a star because, of the 3 Portland area REIs, this one likely has the smaller inventory. Otherwise a great location with adequate parking. REI typically carries items from very reputable brands. REI used to offer a return policy that was impossibly generous. As more folks took advantage of that, REI had to scale back to returns limited to one year after purchase. This is still unbelievably generous. If you plan on frequenting REI, pay the one-time $20 membership and start earning 10% back on future purchases. This comes in the form of a dividend annually that you can use towards a future purchase(s). read more

We didn't need any help while in the store today, looking for shoes. But were asked twice in different parts of the store. So that's good! God a great deal on a pair of Kids Teva's, which is exactly what we came in for. Checked them out online, then went in and bought them. We didn't have to wait in line on a Saturday afternoon, bonus points. read more

I consistently end up back at REI to purchase my camping, footwear, and backpacking gear. So often I think maybe I will find something for a better price at a larger retailer but I always end up back at REI. Add in the dividend and then when it is a close call REI gets the sale. I don't like to buy gear online; I need to really look at the technical details. Today was a great example; went in just to get my torso measured for a backpack and the salesclerk was so knowledgeable that I almost purchased a pack during the visit. I do know however that I will be back to purchase a pack there. Another example; backpacking tents. Went online, went to large retailer down the street, went to another retailer in Portland. Ended up buying the REI tent because it was the best value. This is a great location with a very friendly professional staff. read more

So I was back in town for a mini-vacation. First thing I do is rent a road bike and take the MAX to the zoo, then start climbing Skyline just like the old days. I am getting pretty north on Skyline, about 7 miles from the bike store and my rear tire starts hissing loudly. The bike store did not include their standard patch kit. I pull over and start calling them, but they aren't willing to do anything. Pretty much my only option is to call and wait for a taxi, which could take a while. Then I'm out $30, plus my day is shot. What happens? This guy Jonathan passes going north with a friend, turns around and comes to see if I need help. He inspects the tire. He has all the tools and has the tire off in no time flat. Next thing you know he is sealing up the tube with some glue and a patch. However, after some pumping, the tire is still leaking and not holding any air. It's okay though because Jonathan has a brand new spare tube and he's giving it to me. He installs it, pumps it up by hand, finishes with CO2 and then leaves. I can hardly believe my luck. I mean even in Portland it is a somewhat unlikely turn of events. So, Jonathan works in bike sales at REI Tualatin, so I thought I would give them a heads up. It was highly appreciated. And, having owned a few mobile-tactical bags and backpacks, I have to say REI's Novarra Buzz bag is unsurpassed in form and function. This REI seems a bit smaller than most but still get the fantastic selection and customer service you expect at any other REI.

This location is much larger than the one close to home. Took some time to wander through and look at things. While REI isn't the cheapest place, for most of your outdoor activities, you want quality and often times you get what you pay for. Huge selection of items to meet your outdoor needs. I think maybe heavy on biking, camping and hiking items. Overall, I'd recommend and say become a member to get your annual rebate. read more

I have had many great experiences at other locations but both my partner and I struggled to get any help, even as I saw 3 employees wandering around seemingly aimlessly. First - I am a big REI fan. I normally love them. This one just felt off. I am used to the Hillsboro location and the downtown Portland one I guess. There were jackets in 2 sections as far from each other as physically possible. One section for camping and the other for snow. Huh??? Wtf??? Dismissing the odd organization, this place rocks as most REI locations do. I found a jacket for the wife and one for the daughter (one in each section), found a little container that I needed and got out nice and quick. The employees I asked about jackets admitted the organization was confusing. Apparently a jacket with removable liner is for snow, but a thin rain coat without a liner is camping. I waited to become a member of REI for way too long. After hiking Mt. St. Helens last year I needed a "real" set of hiking boots. My major concern was buying a set of boots that were mine from there on out; if they hurt, tough cookie. Not REI, they will take back my boots after a month of hiking, six months, what ever! In addition to great product representation they have a load of classes, great staff, and more choices than a Roman feast! They were so good at spoiling my girlfriend as well.
