I've been to this location several times now, and I always appreciate the customer service that they have here, but today was a step above - I went in just to browse some of their backpacks for a trip that I'm taking later on in the summer, fully not planning to commit to anything today. I ended up talking to several associates who asked if I had questions, and at first I was hesitant to really get into anything simply because I wasn't 100% sure. I ended up asking Giselle (I think that was their name!) and they asked me if I just wanted to do a full backpack fitting. Not only that, when I mentioned that I was thinking of one backpack, they told me that they had bought the pack for their brother and brought their experience with the bag while we were fitting it. They also realized the straps were too small on me, and went on a mission to find me the right size, just for the fitting! I mentioned that I wanted to get a specific color that they didn't have in stores, and they pulled up the product info for me so that I could order with the cashier up front (also a delight!) if I was interested for pickup. I didn't think that I would end up getting anything right away, but I was so thankful for Giselle for taking time to answer all my questions and get me sorted. Was discussing my goals with my fam who came with me and the woman working the shoe section was chatting with someone but somehow heard me utter my shoe size and practically had me figured out by the time I made up my mind about what I wanted. It's REI so that automatically gets you four stars in my book. What I specifically like about this store is the customer service. I came in to look in for some new cots for an upcoming camping trip. The associate that helped me not only had great product knowledge but he opened up one of the cots to let us try it out. We talked through some great tent options that would accommodate the cots (we were in the market for a new tent). I was impressed that the associate was able to take the time to walk us through all the options. I have always been impressed by REI and their customer service but this store in particular, bravo all around. read more

I went to the REI Tukwila store to return a defective item purchased online. After returning the item, I shopped around. I was there for almost 40 min and 2 floor staffs walked by me and did not bother to greet or ask me if I needed help. One of the male staff had extremely bad body odor which was not pleasant..... The only person that provided any sort of customer service was the security guy by the entrance. He was extremely professional with incoming and outgoing customers. The people on the floor could learn some customer service from him! This is the only reason I give a 2 star. If I ever need to go to a physical store, I'll go to the one Tacoma or Bellevue next time. I had the pleasure of meeting a gentleman named Scott who went above and beyond my expectations. In elementary school our class visited the Pioneer Farm Museum for an overnighter field trip. We brought our sleeping bags and flashlights. We slept on hay in a barn. I had never used an outhouse before. Honey Bucket, yes. A scary wooden shack, no. It was the first time I had ever gone "camping" without my family. Then in middle school our class went to Camp Seymour for the week. We stayed in cabins and did all the outdoorsy activities like canoeing and hiking. I enjoyed being around trees and fresh air. These field trips were fun and it was like a PNW rite of passage too: This is how we connect with nature. This is where we learn to respect our environment. This is our home and we must do our best to protect these resources. The FernGully movie I watched many years ago still resonates with me. We shopped at Big 5 and Sears because those were the closest and known places for recreational equipment at the time. REI became popular years later. REI started to become trendy when I was in my teens. We used to drive to the one off Eastlake then they opened a store in Tukwila. REI at Southcenter is pretty small compared to the flagship store but it still has good merch. It has free parking but be forewarned, the roads are pretty hectic during Christmas time. The store is clean and organized. I love the variety and selection of brands. Knowledgeable staff are there to assist with questions. They also offer classes if you're a beginner or want to learn more about the outdoors. Check it out online. REI is where I buy park passes, quality supplies, and comfortable clothing. My job doesn't require me to dress up anymore, so a lot of the stuff in my closet are things that protect me from the weather elements, stuff for the terrain, and equipment for safety (shoutout to my WTA and Search & Rescue buddies-you guys are my heroes!) REI has items for all recreational enthusiasts. My co-workers, friends, and fam are pretty outdoorsy. We fish on the coast. We dig for oysters in WA State Parks. We run in parks and we hike up mountains along the I-90 corridor. We embrace and prepare for the rain, sun, wind, and snow. I usually dress in layers. Good shoes, a backpack or messenger bag, and a water bottle are important things to have when you work downtown. Madison, James, and the Pike St. Hillclimb are brutal but they give you a pretty good workout. It's the end of August. I'll be breaking out the fall jackets, scarves, and gloves pretty soon. Gore-Tex has saved me many times at the 4th & Jackson bus stop. REI has always been there for me like that friend who's always got my back. the service wasn't very good at all, there was one guy with longer hair whom I talked with in the hiking water area who was very nice and great service helping me with a patagonia jacket in the men's section. The other guy who helped me was in the shoes area, looked at me 3 times and avoided me up until he tried helping a man who pointed me out saying I was waiting first. Stopped in knowing I needed hiking shoes but not sure which ones. An older gentleman assisted me. He listened to what I was looking for and brought out some recommendations. I also picked a few by eye and he brought those, also. I ended up choosing one of those he recommended. Spent the week hiking in them and am happy with my choice. He was knowledgeable and not pushy or hovering. I loved that. He actually went on break and another girl gave me more information on the shoes I was considering (Altra Lone Peak 8 Trail-Running Shoes). They are designed flat on purpose. So the first man to help me didn't see me purchase the shoes. I wanted him to know he did a great job but I don't know his name. The girl was awesome, too. Very informative. Recommend this store. Ordered a sweatshirt online picked it up and went home. I thought something was fishy because my order was in a bag. I was told when I purchased something a week before they went bagless. Got home took out sweatshirt and found out that the shirt still had a security tag . I had to drive all the way back to get the tag off. My first contact at this store was a greeter at the door with probing questions and pushing membership. At this point, I haven't stepped foot in the store yet. I told him I was not interested in membership and that I was there to check out their bikes. He insisted someone come to me in the bike section with MORE questions. Two sales associates, tall white dude and a short white woman, walked up to me and were confused after I told them that I was JUST LOOKING. He replied, "So you're just looking at bikes and not actually getting one." Ouch! There must be a reason to visit this store in person because "just looking" is unacceptable. I've decided to start using my bike. I haven't owned a bike rack for awhile. We have a larger 4 bike hitch rack that fits your sufv, but nothing for my smaller car. I had done some research online and decided to pop into the store to get some advice before purchasing the rack. When I arrived, the greeter at the door asked if I was looking for something in particular and I told her the purpose of my visit. She radioed back to the bike staff and directed me to the area. I was met in the walkway and escorted to the right location. Unfortunately, my product was not on the shelf and it was in the back. The salesperson found it and a bike repair person told me that the website would give me exact instructions on how to set it up for my car model. It did require me to purchase an additional part, but I've used it once and it's a keeper. 5 stars for outstanding customer service and the tip regarding the custom instructions. I would have installed it based upon the standard instructions. read more

The ski service shop at this REI knows how to help a customer more than any other ski shop in the Pacific Northwest. When ALL other ski shops and REIs could not do a same-day binding mount, this one could. The ski technician, Jan (spelling? Pronounced "yawn") was personable, professional, and accommodating. Jan accepted my skis/bindings at 7:00pm and them mounted and waxed by closing at 8:00pm. No BS, no gimmicks--he said he could do it and he did. 10/10 would recommend. I came here on a Thursday afternoon to have a new inner-tube and set of pedals installed on my road bike. I was helped by a gentleman named Jan who noted the mechanics were booked until Monday. He filled out the paperwork and quoted that my bike would be repaired by Monday. He said to check out the store while he filled out the information. About 5 minutes later, he found me and said he would just fix my bike himself and have it ready within 30 minutes. After 30 minutes or so, he came and found me in the store to let me know the bike was ready. He greased my chain, aligned my brakes, and gave me a presta valve cap. Note that I only wanted an installation for pedals and a new inner-tube. However, he performed tasks found in a standard tune-up despite not being part of the initial quote (thank you sir!!!). I only paid for pedal installs, a new tube, and the tube install despite the extra efforts Jan put into my bike. Also, he gave me route advice on different trails nearby. Overall, I'm a happy man and Jan deserves recognition for his level of customer service that day. Also, if he didn't quote me on a 30 minute repair, I wouldn't have spent money on new goodies while lurking through the store. read more

Great REI location. Parking lot is ample and the folks who work here are always super helpful and friendly. They don't have ski rentals here but they have everything else you may need for skiing or enduring winter weather. Went in for some new running shoes as I've been having trouble with my current pair. I have never had a great pair of runners so I went in not knowing a lot. On top of that i brought my two young children as well. I was helped by Mariah and she was so patient with me and my children and was so helpful. If I had questions and she wasn't sure of the answer she would look it up to make sure she gave me the right answer. She suggested so many good shoes and let me continuously try on shoes until we found the perfect pair, she was wonderful! Now this is where my experience turned sour. I went up to the front to check out. Mind you, Mariah had enlightened me on the membership and 20% off if I signed up today, so I had already known about this. Thea was the lady who helped me check out. She also asked me about the membership and I kindly declined. She proceeded to ask why, I told her I didn't shop often and just don't think I would reap the benefits as I'm not a consistent customer. Thea then told me that it "would be a wash to spend $30 and get 20% off today", in which I already knew as I did the math before checking out. Again, I kindly declined, trying to speed up the transaction to tend to my toddler and fussy baby. She continues to harass and almost bully me into getting this membership and telling me my money goes to their programs. Thea spent probably 5 full minutes, trying to bully me into signing up while there is a line of customers behind me. I understand upselling but there is a time and a place and a mother alone with 2 children, trying to make it out of the store, repeatedly telling Thea kindly no, is NOT the time and place to continue this charade. After I looked at her one last time and said "I really appreciate it but no thank you", Thea had the nerve to look me in the eyes and tell me how "bazaar" I was in front of me, my kids and all the other customers behind me. How unprofessional and embarrassing on her behalf. I walked out without signing up for the membership and now she gets to deal with a crappy review all because she couldn't understand that no means no. Thank you so much Mariah for all your help. Thea, please learn common respect. I will shop with REI again but will refrain from ever dealing with Thea again as she lacks basic human communication skills. read more

Actually quite small but moderate amount of selection for a lot of the outdoor sports activities. There seems to be an associate in each area, and due to the small nature of the store, it's not hard to find anyone to help you. At least it wasn't hard for me. I think Fidel P. said all the associates asked if he needed help, but maybe they thought he was going to steal something....I kind of got that vibe too. But maybe they are just friendly and customer service driven. Also, I don't know if I over looked it, but I didn't see anything for kayaking or canoeing. Prices are expensive but they have really great quality items. You may be able to find similar items for less money at Cabela's or some other sporting goods store. read more
