These guys set the standard of what mechanics should be. Great communication via e-mail and phone with Kane. Transparent and fair with pricing. They actually care about the parts they put in your car and do the job right. My car just got out of warranty by 6 months and the dealer just treated me like anyone off the street and was charging maximum for parts and labor after going there for years. Safe to say, I'll never be back the dealer. Rather than be ripped off, I drove home and found a local independent shop. Reitmeir's came up and they were really good and knowledgeable from the start. My Volkswagen Water Pump and Thermostat failed and my engine started overheating. They replaced the water pump, thermostat, and coolant. The car runs great and I hope I can get another 8 years out of it. I also replaced a PCV / oil separator and they quoted a fair price for labor only. I like businesses that treat their customers fairly and with respect. It's expensive for customers and businesses to stay in the Bay Area, but they follow the golden rule: If you take care of your customers, your customers will take care you. My family used to go to Joe Reitmeir (and his son Jeff) for my mom's Mercedes and my dad's BMW in the 90s and the early 2000s. I haven't gone there till just recently as I just purchased an older Porsche. I am happy to see Jeff has taken over from Joe and he is exceptional! He has his son Curtis working there too. They were courteous and helped me with my Pre-Purchase Inspection which was pricey but they did a good job. I'd go here again. Updating my review after getting my 80K service done in October 2024: My family has been going to Reitmeir's Werkstatt since 1989 (mom and dad took their 1986 Mercedes 300E and 1989 BMW 735iL. I also took my Porsche 986 there for service for many years between 1998-2008. It has been a decade plus since I have used them. I recently bought a Porsche 997 and I wanted to take it to a place that was more affordable than the local dealer and someone whom I could trust for an 80,000 mile service. The quote I received from Reitmeier's was ~20% cheaper than the Porsche dealer which was good but their service was GREAT. Curtis and Kane spent time with me to explain what was off and needed help in the near term on my car. Kane went out of his way to look at an issue with my windshield and recommended some ways to fix it as well as an issue I have with my spoiler which he gave me a way to track down what could be wrong with it so they could fix it. I have to say I will be taking my Porsche 997 here from now and till I own it. I highly recommend this shop. This shop is situated within 1 minute of the heart of Downtown Los Altos. It's very easy to find, with there being plenty of parking around the establishment! They specialize in automotive work on German cars, like BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, etc. You'll recognize them by their plethora of German cars situated around. I had called in on a Tuesday morning without an appointment to see if they could squeeze me in for an oil change + license plate attachment and they were able to with little to no hesitation! They listened to my requests with intent and were very kind. So incredibly nice, their whole team, and their work is honest and true. You can tell they value their work! In the end they actually called me to inform that my car, in fact, did not need any servicing done to it right now and that they were able to attach my plates on. I wasn't charged for anything, and they actually gave me their signature Reitmeir's Werkstatt plate cover! It's a very pretty chrome and fits very well with my car. They also took care of the 4 different screw head types that were previously installed. It was such a nice surprise! They took a lot of care into answering my calls and explained everything in detail. I'd 100000% come back to get any type of auto work done!! This shop has been taking care of our vehicles for over 10 years. We keep our cars for a long time, 20 years or more. Reitmeir's does our scheduled maintenance for less than the Mercedes Benz dealership and will give us a heads up for any expensive repairs coming up. Right now we're driving our 17 year old S450 and 8 yo 350 ML and plan to keep both until we decide on an electric vehicle. The first time I was here I needed to get some body work done. To my dismay, that is not a service that they provide, but the staff was able to give me a great suggestion. I went to the body shop they recommended and I was really pleased with their quality of service. That is why, when I needed to get some regular maintenance done on my car, I made sure to come back. I think the staff is really dry in personality but you can tell they care about what they do. The work quickly and efficiently and guide you along the way. I honestly think they are wonderful. I think the pricing was also reasonable. They don't push you into decisions and they also gave me pros and cons of what should be done and why. I like that they take the time to explain things. I would recommend coming here if you need regular car maintenance if you have a BMW or VW. Also they seem to have a great connection with other car service providers and are always willing to help you out with suggestions if you need a service that they can not provide. To me, that makes me feel like they care more about the customer's happiness and safety than just making money. read more

The hourly rate here is covering for a lack of expertise and I would suggest getting repairs elsewhere even if they were half the price. I had these "experts" replace some coolant hoses and was replacing a cracked hose they'd overlooked a month later when I asked the new mechanic about the "loose motor mounts" ol' Reitmeir had diagnosed; dude drove the car 10 feet and knew it was the much more common "worn lower control arm bushing". And the Reitmeir dude had looked at me like *I* was the dummy for asking how he knew the motor mounts needed replacing! Do you know how many hours it would've taken to replace those puppies only to realize the problem wasn't solved??? I'm not in the business of paying for apprentices to have learning experiences! Oh, and then they broke off one of my hood support hydraulics and told me it came in that way LOL; it's an absolute clown show here, likely preying on nice old ladies. read more

I like this place. Ever since my X5's bundled maintenance agreement ran out, I've been taking my car to Reitmeir's. The people are nice. The estimates are always spot on. They call you quickly to communicate status. And I think they are cheaper than the local BMW dealer (BMW of Mountain View which I can longer stand) as well. Specifically, they've changed indicator lights, tail lights, one headlight (at like $275 for the bulb I remember this one), a broken automatic window, and done the regular maintenance. It was really hard for me to find an auto repair shop in Los Altos area that I could trust. These guys are truly the best in town! I have had my yearly inspections done on my BMW here the last two years, and both times I was taken care of very quickly. Kane is a very smart and honest guy! Today I brought my car in because my check engine light was on and my car was overheating. I took my car in because 3 shops told me I needed $2500 worth of work on my BMW replacing a water pump, thermostat. Sure enough I came here for an estimate and received the best news. Living in the Bay Area where everything is so expensive and you cant take a risk of any mechanic trying to sell you something you dont need all I have to say was that I had a good experience with these guys and hope you do too. They are very nice and proffesional. Kane and Jeff were also very responsive when I messaged the business asking if he could help me with the issue I was having. Last, but not least, their prices are extremely fair and they do not try to up-sell. I trust their work and I will definitely return if any other issues arise with my car in the future. We had a pretty rough experience with Reimeir's. When our BMW came out of warranty and our key remotes stopped working, we went there thinking we'd save money over the dealer - bad idea! I gave them all the info about the common diversity amplifier module defect in the E61 and they worked on the car for a couple of hours, but couldn't fix the issue. The owner called me and said he needed more time. I asked him if he was confident he could fix it for less than the dealer. He said yes. The next day, I called for an update and was told that they just couldn't figure it out. Ok, so we came to pick up our car and got welcome with a bill of several hours of work even though nothing was fixed! I understand they spent some time on it, but it is very infuriating customer experience to have to pay so much money, only for the problem and a new rattling sound to remain! They should have been less optimistic or tried replacing the amplifier module (which ended being what the dealer did). Lesson learned: if you have a fancy Teuton car with a problem that's not run-of-the-mill clearly recognized by the central computer, then you're better going to the dealer as the buck stops there anyway. UPDATE: response to comment below: Jeff did not replace the varsity amplifier module as the "procedures" indicated to be the source of the problem. The key remotes had no issue. The dealer replaced the varsity module and it fixed the issue. read more

I recently bought an 08 535xi from a non-BMW dealer. A few months in, the car started showing signs of a major problem and within a day was spewing smoke and jerking back and forth. I took the car in the Reitmeir's who spent an hour and a half diagnosing the problem. They researched the vehicle and tied the problem back to a couple of recalls the previous owner had not completed. They wrote up a report and sent me over to BMW to have the work performed under the recalls. I think there are a lot of shops out there who would have simply billed me $800-$1,000 for the work and not thought twice about it. I appreciated Reitmeir's honesty and have recommended them since. I was charged for the 90 minutes of labor Reitmeir's put into the car, but that was a small price to pay and I was happy to cut the check. read more

Incredible turn around. Brought my car in for some front end work around the control arm bushings, shocks, and struts. I was going to do it myself but the work was more involved than I wanted to do myself. They noticed the CV Boots were compromised (and pretty badly), and a ball joint was badly worn too. They got the car back to me the next day. Had I did the job myself it's possible I would have missed those issues or debated if having my car out of commission for a week or so while waiting for the parts to be delivered to my door was worth it. When I got home I found the paper work from the dealer from a recent check up, and they also had put notes down about the CV Boots. So that was awesome! read more

I just wanted to add an update after another experience with Reitmeir's. My Audi finally hit the 90k range and I needed a timing belt service. I had Eric and the team take care of this for me and got the car back after a few days. The next week I had a separate issue with the car, and the team at Reitmeir's isolated the issue, were kind and understanding, and were dedicated to resolving the issue. They fixed the faulty component at an incredibly fair price. I am still happy with Eric and Jeff and the team at Reitmeir's, and felt that after this most recent experience, it was worthy of me updating my previous post. Been taking my BMW "Bruce" (yes, my friends and I named my baby) to Reitmeir's for the last 3-4 years. They've always done on excellent, thorough and efficient job (if they have the necessary parts, I get same day service if I drop it off in the A.M.). I've brought my car in for a variety of issues (I don't speak "car speak" so, I'll do my best to describe the car woes): - Overheated/broken radiator - Mechanical problems w/ the window (motor needed to be replaced - something like that) - Broken A/C system - Oil change - Oil leak - Replacing the "rubber lining" on the driver side window was damaged - Brake pad replacement I trust my car with Reitmeir's because they are experts (check out their website, they live and breathe European cars). Also, being pretty clueless when it comes to cars, I've never felt cheated by threm. When I pick up my car after something has been fixed or replaced, Reitmer's will go over what they did and they'll also highlight items that need to be fixed/replaced in the near future. And, unlike most BMW dealerships, Reitmeir's is extremely responsive and has an extremely quick turnaround time. I give them 4 out of 5 star because, well - they're a lil' pricey. But, you get what you pay for so it's worth it. Note: Reitmeir's only handles "interior" work, not "body work." For example, if you get into an accident and need the door fixed and painted, that's out of Reitmeir's realm of work. However, they can recommend auto body shops. read more

The little maintenance-lights in my car had come on and no way was I going back to Allison- I wanted a local business, not a dealer franchise, and ideally someplace that had been around for a while, enough time to establish a reputation. I asked some friends who have lived in the area a long time and they wholeheartedly recommended Reitmeir. They were right. I've been using Reitmeirs Werkstatt since 1974. Today they came through for us once again when my mother-in-law's car needed a new battery. She's been a customer of Reithmeirs for about 15 years. They have gone out of their way to take care of her and the car. Today was exceptional, they took her car in, changed out the battery, it's a 1986 Audi. When mom could not show up to pay, she's a 100 years old and we are dealing with this issue remotely from Arizona. Jeff Reitmeir took charge of the situation and he personally returned the car to my mother-in-law's home in Palo Alto. We are so grateful for his above and beyond help. In all the years, we used Reitmeirs for work on our Porsche and other cars, we never had a complaint or a reason to take the car back. He has also been totally transparent with pricing of the various jobs and been consistent when the bill comes in at the end of the day. The shop is very well-run and everyone I have come in contact with has been professional. Lastly, I did my homework on pricing and got quotes from a couple of other shops in the area. I recently brought my 2008 BMW to Reitmeir's, and had a decent experience, but not to the standard I would have expected from the hundreds of five star reviews found here on Yelp. I brought the car in for help with two sets of noises. One noise was a periodic vibration sound when the engine was idling, and the other was a creaking noise from the suspension. I do most of the work on my car myself, so I have a fairly good idea of what is going on. I pointed them to the struts and alternator pulley as probable causes of the noises, but was hoping they could help diagnose with more certainty. They were happy to help and it was easy to schedule an appointment. After drop off it took about a day and half for the car to be ready. In this time they poked around and did a quick test drive. They determined that the suspension noise was from a loose skid plate, and the vibration was from the alternator. The charge for this information was about $250. Unfortunately, it turned out that neither of these conclusions were quite correct. After tightening the skid plate, the suspension noises have continued (I still think I'm in for new struts at some point soon, and possibly tie rod ends). The vibration noise was from the alternator pulley, not the alternator (a $700 difference), and I was able to fix it in an hour in my driveway. I also know they didn't take the wheels off to look at the suspension, since the front wheels were pretty well seized on with many months of junk accumulated around the hubs. I don't hold these issues against them, but I felt that it's only fair to weigh in here on yelp with a not quite 5 star experience. I'll probably give them another chance at some point, since they are honest and well meaning. read more

Terrible experience. Recommended the wrong part and would not take it back. The uneducated mechanic made it a point to barely help me with a pressing problem and then didn't acknowledge his mistake after I brought the part back. They also gave me outrageous estimate to fix a problem which lead to a faulty oil filter. $6k estimate by Reitmeir's ended up being a $20 oil filter. Jeff is an ok guy. It's the other guy I'd fire and replace. Poor customer service, know it all attitude, and just shady. Please take your air cooled car up to Marin. S car Go is cheaper, more knowledgable, and won't rip you off. Very dissapointed, skip this shop. read more

I was visiting family in the bay area and my Mercedes had issues on the drive down from Auburn, CA. I was afraid to drive the vehicle any distance because it was misfiring. Had two tires drop shipped from TireRack to Reitmeir's, and made an appointment to have them installed today at lunchtime. I realize that it's not only lunchtime for me, but for their workers too, so I appreciate somebody sticking around at noon to install my new tires at a time that is convenient for me. Just a couple blocks away is a plethora of shops and restaurants to kill time while your car is being worked on. My request that the lug bolts be hand torqued to spec was not a problem, and service was prompt and efficient. Price is fair when considering the care and effort I observed them putting into a quality job in handling my car. read more
