Please, please USE ANOTHER ENERGY PROVIDER. First, the bills are insanely high. (Started around $150 per month and got to $300+ for a 2 bedroom apartment) If you somehow find the time to call into customer service to dispute your bill, the phone representative simply guesses as to these reasons why your bill is higher than ever before. Maybe it's the fact that you don't want to freeze at night. Perhaps, you need to refrigerate your food or use other essential appliances. Or there is possibly a person living in your attic who changes the thermostat when you're not home. They provide every excuse under the sun except the simple fact that they are overcharging you. Second, they will suggest that you sign up for AVERAGE BILLING. Do yourself a favor and just hang up right then and there. Average Billing is explained as a way to make your bills more predictable - sounds nice right? Wrong. While you start paying an average amount (a casual $200+ per month), a deferred amount (the difference between their insanely high energy charge and the "average" charge) is ADDING UP EVERY MONTH. So once your contract with this evil company is done, you get stuck with a HEFTY additional fee for the deferred amount on your final bill. Phone representatives rush through their explanation of this program, so it really is not apparent until that final bill arrives. Average billing is just a tool to lull customers into annoyed acceptance that they are absolutely screwed. It's too late for me. Please save yourself. Be careful about applying to Reliant for electrical service when you have a credit freeze with the credit reporting agencies. Reliant does a hard check on your credit. If you have a freeze on your credit, you will not be approved. Furthermore, they will require that you provide two pieces of identification to them by email. Per Trans Union, having your identification out there and not properly protected by electronic means, will put your identity at risk. Once they have denied you credit, unfreezing your credit with the credit agencies is too late. Buyer Beware!! read more

I wish I could rate them ZERO stars. Reliant is an absolutely horrible company who gives their customers the run around about service issues. We understand that in Texas the service is provided by Oncor and that Reliant is a 3rd party organization handing the billing but I find it unacceptable that this week my power has been out Monday and today (Thursday) for several hits and neither company can give me any answers. And when I ask for a credit for the inconvenience for not having power they rudely inform me I am not being charged for kilowatts that I am not using so no credits can be applied. Worst customer service I've received EVER. I work in the customer service industry, and I'm appalled at the service we have received from a company so well known here in Dallas. We moved and decided to transfer our services to the new address (our first mistake). We moved 11/23, started getting charged for our new place on 11/23. Continued to get charged on our OLD account until 12/25. We had called several times to correct this. We called 4 times total, to cancel the old account, and be refunded the amount we originally had in the old account. ($98) which we were told would be transferred to the new account. After unsuccessfully cancelling the account several times, I just spent 58 minutes on the phone while the supervisor "listened" to my original call and said I never cancelled the account we would just be out the money. We would receive a refund check in 21 days.... 21 days to get a refund?! This day and age, it takes 21 days?! To not even get a full refund of the original $98. I specifically asked the rep if there were additional TDU charges and how much it was. He assured me there were not. As a consumer I'm supposed to double check the information a rep of the company gives me? Called back several more times and everyone, including a manager, said my bill was too high. It was escalated to a special dept that actually knows how to calculate your bill and it's correct. So basically no one other than specially trained employees are able to prove a true and accurate representation of what you will pay. I must say my experience with Reliant has been disappointing at best and as soon as my contract is up in September I will be moving on to another company. The saga begins two years ago. I was moving into a new apartment and Reliant had a deal I really thought was awesome. Reliant screwed things up so bad I didn't have service on move in day. The complex was cool and let me use their power until Reliant got it together. Now there's a credit on my account and nobody there can tell me why it's not posting to my account. The result has been late fees because each month I call and someone in one of their off-shore call centers assures me it will post "for sure" this month and it never does. It's $174.00 which is almost two months of billing and nobody can tell me why it's not posting. At this point I don't care, they can keep it! When my contract is up, I'm DONE! read more

When I called about this issue I was told they had inaccurate readings and they basically "guess"timated how much their faulty equipment inaccurately read and put it all on the next bill + the monthly bill. In August 2022, I had solar panels installed. The meter was switched to be able to read the solar power I am creating and using. However, Reliant charged me almost $800, because somehow the new meter said I used 1600 kwh in one day. It took months for this to be resolved. I called several times to explain the issue and not once did someone say the 100% Solar plan I was on, was not for people with solar panels. Finally, someone switched me to the Solar Department and got me on the Buyback plan. No rollover plan. So you can't keep what you make. Furthermore, Reliant states they cannot back credit me for all the power I had been generating and possibly using because I wasn't on the correct plan. Needless to say, I am switching. read more

Do NOT USE Reliant Energy in the Dallas area. We closed our account when we moved into out new house due to our new area not having Reliant which means no cancellation fee. When our last payment came out, Reliant took over $210 extra from our checking account mistakenly because we were not supposed to be charged. I then called in October to see what the issue was and was told they were going to be sending a refund check, so I gave them our new address. I was then told it was going to take 21 days for us to even get the check in the mail. So I then waited the 21 days, still no check. I then called again wanting to know what the issue was. I was then told they hadn't even started working on sending the refund check. I once again gave them our new address to send it to and was told it was gonna take another 21 days. 21 more days go by, still no check. I then call a third time and am told there was an issue with the check and that they STILL haven't sent the check. At this point I am furious and request to speak to their supervisor. I am then told that they are sending the check and it actually should be here in 10 business days, which apparently was the amount of time that they were supposed to tell me instead on the first 2 calls. Another week goes by, no check. I once again call, making it 4 SEPARATE times I've called at this point. I tell them immediately to send me to their supervisor. I am then told they sent it to the WRONG ADDRESS. That is after I gave them our new address 3 separate times. They then say they will send it to the right address. Another week has gone by and still no check. I called again today and was told they started the process again 12/22 and was told I won't get the check until 1/2.... This has been going on close to 75 DAYS now. This is highly unprofessional. Save yourselves your sanity and do not go with this company. read more

Worst experience. I'm a disabled veteran. Moved to Rowlett Texas last May 2022. Upon moving I called Reliant energy to set up service. I asked about average monthly plan so I could pay same amount every month. It wasn't it was being averaged out of our usage. So at 17 cents kwh by the time winter arrived I had over 1,000s dollars of deferred balances. So I'm still paying high bills and now I've got this overage tray for. I found a different company and the rate was 10.9 kwh for 3 years. But now I've got to figure out how to pay all this and switch without having to pay for a switching fee. Yesterday I did my annual search for power rates at www.powertochoose.org Everyone in Texas should do this at least annually or you will be ripped off by your current electric provider. On the site, Reliant has the best fixed rate plan, but they would NOT let me pick my switch over date when I signed up. I had to call them, hold, explain that they didn't need to charge me $5.95 for talking to a human. Hold again, they had to search for the rate they advertised, hold again, etc. 45 minutes later, Reliant said they had cancelled my switch request and said I should call back next month. I also did the live chat for about 30 minutes. 2 hours later, my current provider notified me that I will be penalized because Reliant told ERCOT that I was switching in June. On a date that Reliant picked out of the blue and refused to tell me. Bottom line: Beware!! Reliant quotes a good rate for their on-line only plan, but their on-line people have no ability to help and the humans want $5.95 to talk to them. They don't talk dirty for that rate, but the mis-leading things they say are dirty enough. read more

I've had a terrible experience thus far with Reliant Energy. 1. I set up the account to be transferred over to my name when I originally purchased my home. They took social security numbers, address info, drivers license, & CC info... Confirmed all the information and scheduled the setup. .... Called the day prior to set up to ensure they had all information and were coming out as requested. They confirmed ... Called the day following set up to make sure everything was set up correctly and they said "i'm sorry we don't have anything on file for you" 2. Repeat all of step one. 3. Repeat step one. Finally set up. 4. Called a month later because we did not receive a bill. Were told we should have a bill in the mail soon. 5. 1 week later called because we still did not receive a bill and paid balance via phone. 6. Requested to authorize another user on account. Was confirmed via customer service that user was authorized to access account at any time. 7. Called to set up auto payments via customer service. Realized user was never authorized and Reliant then faxed a document to sign for authorize user. Signed and faxed back. 8. Set up auto payments via customer service. Customer service confirmed auto payments were set up and the payments would automatically come out of my account monthly. 9. Another month.. still nothing in the mail from Reliant.. not even a welcome or thank you package. 10. Called Reliant again to see why we aren't getting any mail.. they said we should receive something soon. Nothing. 11. Repeat step 7 once we finally got mail stating payments are late and due or service to be cut off. Reset up authorized user again via fax as this was still not set up. 10. Mail came in from then on but was set up on auto payments as the Reliant customer service confirmed. read more

Cause of surg-charges and an activation fee which I was never told about. After that my bills went thru the roof paying $289. month. I would give 0 stars but it won't let me I own income property here and when I'm in between tenants I'm made to create a new account each time. I'm required to pay $245 as a deposit and I was told my service would be started the same day. It was not. I called and was told I had to sent 2 forms of ID to verify who I am after paying the $245. I was not told that I needed to to that the first day I called. I was on the phone for 2 hours because they kept transferring me to different departments and every one of the customer service reps was foreign and had accents so thick I couldn't understand them. They word read or recite statements so fast on top of their accents there was no telling what I was agreeing to. I was so frustrated and wanted to call another service but I'd invested so much time already and I had workers at the house wanting to work. I had to reschedule someone who was suppose to go Monday morning till Tuesday and I'm just hoping the elect will be on by Tuesday morning. On behalf of My Dad: I applied for service in July 1962 w/HL&P and was required to give a DEPOSIT, which I complied. As time passed HL&P was changed to Reliant. I received no deposit back. In March 8, 2019 I Approved a 20 Month plan which was cancelled on December 18, 2020. I talked to Reliant earlier about getting a better rate, and was told that I was getting the "BEST WE CAN DO" rate. So I applied for service elsewhere. In that I am on a fixed income and the Covid virus I needed Help. "NONE FROM RELIANT" Then to top it off Reliant charged me $200.00 dollars for early cancellation. I had over 20 months completed. I paid it because I was too busy to dispute. Then I got a follow-up bill (for one day less of covered period than the final bill) showing I still owed them. I called many times and customer service staff and a manager agreed it was wrong. The billing department promised to call me back with a solution but never did, even after I called again. Now I got a corrected bill, they gave me a credit but I still owed them money! I wish I could show you all the statements I got from them. The representative was great however that doesn't reflect the company. When customers need assistance or are approved for utility assistance, there needs to be a better process to verify. I had Reliant since I first moved to Dallas in 2007. I didn't have the best credit, so I had to put down a deposit of $275.00. I finally decided to change to another electricity company. Of the $275.00 I paid for the deposit, Reliant refunds me only $67.56. They took all these fees and even charged me a late fee even though the online bill pay was down for four days. If you pay your bill online, please make you look at your monthly statements. For over a year, Reliant was charging me a $5 late fee, even though I was never late. When I called to inquire about the late fee, the representative said the fee was in case I was late. This is a big corrupt company! I also could never get a good plan for my small apartment. I would never recommend this company to any moving to Dallas or wants to change electricity! Look at your bill people and get rid of Reliant ASAP! read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. BREECH IN ACCOUNT SECURITY. They gave my account information out to someone without verifying that they had authorization to access it. I soent almost two hours on the phone the next day with three different agents only to be given the run around about even having a recording of the call where my security was breeches. Once they found the call they verified that they did not properly verify authorization then proceeded to minimize what happened and refused to give me a recording of the call. On top of this, their pricing is outrageous and they're internal organization is alarming. RUN THE OTHER WAY. Go with whatever other option you're considering because they not only don't have the proper training for their team but their customer support is atrocious.
