We slept in late this morning (late for fishermen) on our Maine fishing vacation, so we decided to do a takeout breakfast at Renarda's Kitchen to start our day. Renarda's Kitchen is a local hangout for older folk in the morning, everyone was enjoying a hearty breakfast and conversation when I walked in just after 7am. I ordered a bacon, egg & cheese on a croissant and a sausage & cheese omelette w/ home fries and rye toast. Egg sandwich & omelette were tasty, but the homes fries were kinda blah, to be honest. Needed seasoning. Renarda seems to be a one person show (at least in the morning), she was working hard preparing everyone's meals. It's definitely a local "Greasy Spoon" and unpretentious. Been to breakfast here multiple times. Never been disappointed. Small restaurant with good homemade food.

We were driving all over the remote parts of the state and this was the place that came highly recommended via Yelp, Google Places, etc. So, what's another 30 miles when you're driving 200+ that day. I'm not from the area, so I'm gonna give it to your straight. This is a hole in the wall without the booze, pool table or jukebox. Renarda and a fellow greeted us warmly even though we are clearly from out of the area. I think they could easily sense our apprehension since we were the only people there the whole time but they offered a few suggestions and the hubby and I both knew that there was NOTHING around for about an hour. We were committed. We agreed on the marinated steak tips, mashed potatoes and brown gravy and a salad. Renarda was so sweet, she divided everything up between two plates and bowls and boy was it easily enough for the two of us. The steak tips were a perfect medium rare as requested and were delicious. The mashed potatoes were real, not from a box. The brown gravy was definitely from the McCormick's spice companies container marked Brown Gravy. Nothing special about it at all. Had you mixed it with pan drippings, beef stock, a store bought demi-glace, some additional spices, ANY-thing, you could have 'junked up' or semi-home made this gravy into something MUCH better. The salad and dressing were solid. The ONLY thing that really prevented us from having a nice, relaxing meal or giving a better review was the complete disregard for all Covid protocols. No employee wore a mask, EVER. No information about us was obtained but FAR, FAR worse was when Renarda herself delivered our food and leaned down between us to pick up my husband's plate before I was done eating. Here I am uncovered because I am eating, and she puts herself between us, causing us both to back up since she is maskless, as our we because we were just/are still eating. First off, during none Covid times, you wait for someone to push their plate to the side and you never, in essence push yourself between two people talking to clear dishes. But to pull this, maskless, during Covid, well, it just freaked us the hell out. We left within 2 minutes. Just as fast as I could math in my head and get the hell out of there. Today a friend and I took a walk around Davidson Nature Preserve, and then had lunch nearby at Renarda's Kitchen. Renarda was there by herself, taking orders, clearing places and cooking and serving food. She was pleasant and friendly. However, as someone else's review mentioned, no one in the place besides us was wearing a mask, including Renarda. Granted, there were two couples in there when we were seated, and the tables were spaced apart, but as more people came in for lunch it became more uncomfortable. As for the food, the menu listed typical diner fare for lunch and breakfast, and I wasn't really expecting much. But when the food came, my friend and I were pleasantly surprised. The onion rings with indescribable "yum yum sauce" were really good - light and crispy. My fish was nicely fried, not greasy or soggy, and the hand cut fries were perfect. I thought my cole slaw was WAY too sweet, and only ate a forkful. My friend's club sandwich had big chunks of grilled chicken breast and looked fresh and crisp. That being said, the place could really do with a good cleaning. Again, in this time of pandemic, knowing that your food is being prepared and served in a place that's sanitary is SO important. The dining room and bathroom weren't clean. I may return to Renarda's, but if so I would wait until the pandemic has passed, and would eat outside. read more

My boyfriend stopped here a week ago and picked up two breakfast sandwiches. They were the best, we've ever eaten. A few days later, we called in a takeout order. I had the rodeo burger w/ home cut fries. My boyfriend had a burger with everything on it and the fries. The burgers and fries were perfectly cooked. We live here in Vassalboro and usually go out to eat in Waterville or Augusta. It's nice to know, we no longer need to leave town to get awesome food. I highly recommend a trip to Vassalboro, for some delicious food. read more

This place exists to astonish you!!! We came here with my family of 7 and we were served hands down some of the best food I have ever had in Maine. And that's us coming straight from bar harbor. We literally ordered almost everything from the menu and was blown away by how good it was. We had hot delicious muffins, steak, shrimp Alfredo, homemade spaghetti and meat balls, fish and chips, Tri tips, homemade mashed potatoes and gravy which were amazing, perfectly sized farm salads and to top it all off rhubarb pie hot from the oven. My kids ate everything on their plate, which is very rare. Even after they already close the kitchen, my kids begged for more shrimp Alfredo they went ahead and made another batch! Their customer service exceeds expectations and you can tell they are very passionate about their business. I highly recommend this place, it's exactly what you would expect from a small town restaurant. And if you're in the mood for a real taste of Maine, made with love, from some of the hardest working people, this is your place. read more

OK, like the others have pointed out, the outside doesn't scream "stop here if you are hungry", but I'm so glad we did. Renarda really puts her heart and soul into her cooking and we try to go there at least twice a month. Large menu choice, good prices and the rest of the staff is wonderful. Right now, with the mandatory closing of all restaurants and all the hardships happening everywhere (Covid-19) she is still putting out great meals for pick-up. She will even have them delivered to those folks who can't get out to get their meals. Come on people, share the love....support local small businesses!! read more

Good local little restaurant/dinner feel that offers a variety of food. Had the bacon cheeseburger with a homemade whoopie pie! Yummy!

This is not gourmet. But it is very, very good. The people are very friendly, the price is very reasonable, and the food is very, very good. The cook actually knows what she is doing, and the waitresses are efficient and friendly. A large loyal following from the locals. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but if you are hungry, you should stop in. You will not be disappointed, unless of course you had your heart set on gourmet. read more
