This place is a recycler's dream and s San Rafael treasure. Just simply FANTASTIC! Backed up my car to a small loading area. Someone appeared with a cart. I had a mix of audio electronics, old cords, a dead dust buster and a dead printer. They accepted everything and I paid $5 to leave the printer. Good people doing a good job. I've bought a couple recycled computers from them, both Macs. Highly recommended, very easy to get to from 101 or San Rafael bridge, google the location. Good cheap parts selection, great buys on used computers, which are set up and working on the window counter, and priced to move. They actually answer their phone in person, and act like they own the business and don't just work there. They do repairs and upgrades for reasonable prices. I'm happy. read more

I really love this place. A broken computer = a lot of stress, so when I walk in the door and I'm greeted by a friendly helpful staff ready and willing to take care of me, it's priceless. I lost too much money buying used computers on ebay that crashed or needed to be returned. Some of these failed attempts included HP refurbished actually sent directly from HP if you could imagine that. I stopped by Renew in a panic and what I found here is wonderful. I bought a used pc that had been inspected and gone over by competent techs and it came with a 90 day warranty from Renew. As an older woman it was important to me the way they treated me and 5 stars to them for being very nice and competent. Buying used pcs online can be a real can of worms. Now that I have found Renew that is something I will never have to bother with again. You do not have to be tech savvy to feel comfortable at Renew. I have an IMac and the hard drive failed. Unlike everyone else I don't back it up as often as I should. Anyway they were able to install a new drive and recover all of the old drive faster than promised for the price they said. I could not be more pleased or relieved. I donated a lot of outdated computer monitors and hard drives only to find out that these people are selling and making a profit on donated equipment. Is this even legal? I thought this was a recycling center not a free donation to gain a profit center. They sell used computers and accessories for going market prices like almost new! There are a lot of good working computers that should be donated to schools or students that need one. It's not for you to make a profit! read more

I recently used their repair service for my laptop. Eric (owner?) gave me a very straightforward diagnosis and advised me the cost of repair was within a couple of hundred dollars of the price of a comparable new computer. It was closer than I expected, but I still decided it was worth it to repair the old one. They did the work within the estimated price and it works fine now. Other repair shops I have gone to just wanted to grab the computer and essentially say "whatever we fix, you pay for." Renew is different because they try to give you the information you need to make an informed decision. Definitely a thumbs-up! read more

I recently used Renew Computer's free computer recycling service...you can drop off your old computers, electronics, and accessories and they will reuse and/or resell what they can and correctly dispose of what can't be used. At no cost to you. I found it very convenient and the staff was friendly and helpful. They also have a used parts store which may be worth a look if you need parts and accessories including monitors, phone equipment, cables, power supplies, etc. This store is an eco-Geek's paradise. I was horrified by the number of obsolete power supply cables we have accumulated from old laptops, cell phones, PDAs, etc. And it really bugs me that manufacturers keep changing them so we have to keep buying them and adding to e-waste. It warms my heart to think that a computer recycle store like Renew Computers can actually keep these out of landfill and make them available for sale for people who may have a hard time finding a spare part for older models. They repair and rebuild computers and have a repair service available. I haven't used the repair service so I cannot comment. As of this writing, they have limited weekend hours so check that before making a trip on the weekend. read more

I've bought two receivers here, turned in three old laptops and had two laptops repaired. The repairs were inexpensive and they were ready sooner than they quoted when I dropped them off. All my experiences have been good except the receivers are sold as-is, u-test and I didn't have a chance to bring one of them back within the 7 day return policy. read more

Head to head comparison: Took my Dell XPS laptop to Geek Squad - had to make an appointment a day in advance and they spent about eight minutes with me. Suspected it was the keyboard, but wasn't sure and said they would have to send it to their Kentucky plant, minimum 30 days and $350-500. A few blocks down the street is Computer Renew. Saidel investigates and confirms it is the keyboard by hooking up a remote keyboard. Immediately finds one available online and quotes $50 for the part and $135 labor, probably back in five days. I turn it over to him. He fixes it in three days, right on budget and looks/works good as new. Look beyond the "garage" aesthetic and treat yourself to real expertise and customer service. read more

My old computer stopped working and Renew Computers correctly figured out what was going on and gave me good advice. I ended up buying a new computer from Best Buy and Renew Computers was able to clone my old data (documents, folders, e-mails, etc.) onto the new computer. I didn't lose anything in the transfer. These guys define the word "awesome". I had a really challenging Lenovo Thinkpad screen issue. In short, it malfunctioned except when connected via HDMI to a monitor. When not connected the screen was anything from striped, to shaking, to black. Seidel treated the problem with urgency and complete professionalism and expertise. I had already resigned myself to having to replace the 4 year old laptop (which, incidentally is a great machine - no other issues), but Seidel salvaged it at a cost far less than I was expecting due to smarts and resourcefulness. I bought a Mac from them when my BestBuy computer crashed for the last time. They were incredibly nice and helpful during the purchase. Later in the day, I emailed a question an got a quick response from Tim, which gave me exactly the information I needed. 3 weeks after the purchase, I had to take it back because it stopped working - logic board... very bad. I understand it's an old computer and these things happen - I'm thankful I was within the warranty period though!! But Tim swapped it for another computer and was able to transfer over all the data the very same day, which was so incredible since I'm approaching midterms! I was having problems with my Dell laptop. I talked to Dell and also the video company, Zoom,where I bought my video camera and no one could seem to get to the problem of my misbehaving computer, why my videos were not working properly. I took my computer down to Renew Computer and explained the problem to Saidel G. We recently upgraded out TV and cleaned out our storage unit (which had 5+ years of discarded electronics) and it was so convenient to have a place that will not only take these things but help us unload them as well! Renew computer will save you $ on some simple items such as mouses, cables, keyboards but some of the monitors and computers are a dicey proposition and for the little extra cost involved you are better off purchasing new with a 1 year warranty. I got a T.V "Sharp 32 " and was told everything worked but found out after getting it home that the sound didn't work. By the extra time you spend you are better off getting new in a carton with a warranty. read more
