The apartment-style rooms are fantastic--spacious, clean, and equipped with full kitchens, comfy seating areas, and all the essentials. It's more like staying in a cozy apartment than a standard hotel, which makes solo trips, family visits, or longer stays feel effortless. The service is genuinely warm and welcoming, and the breakfast is a standout--custom-made eggs cooked to order and expertly crafted coffee that beats any run-of-the-mill hotel fare. The location is great too--close enough to Brandeis University for visiting students, but also easy to explore Waltham's Moody Street for restaurants, cafés, and a little local charm. The area felt safe and walkable, and for outdoor enthusiasts, you can hop on nearby trails along the Charles River or Mass Central Rail Trail for some scenic exercise. The parking lot is a little small, but Ilno issues on the night I stayed. The lobby has a bar and place to watch TV. I can't speak for how it is as a bar, but on checkout they had the water the breakfast room was lacking. The breakfast room was otherwise full with all the staples - eggs, cheese, coffee, etc. Except cold water. The room was very clean - I stayed in a long, and although the bed was a little high, was pretty comfortable. I prefer a firmer mattress. There was a couch and table for dinner, and the TV had a reasonable amount of cable channel. There was also a coffee machine in room. Bathroom was also clean with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Like all hotel showers, the hot and cold was not intuitive. Also it had plenty of towels for just me.

I had my room key and credit card, but the manager insisted on seeing my ID even though he could have easily verified who I was with the information in question. I shook my head, said "this is unbelievable" and went to get my key. When I returned, the manager was visibly angry and tried to provoke a confrontation, which I ignored. This is what happens when good hotels franchise their operations out to angry and untrained people who are too lazy to do their jobs. This guy is a problem waiting to happen. The room was clean, spacious and quite minimalist which aligns with the Aloft branding. Room is cleaned only upon request which I actually like a lot. Across my time there, I put out my trash in the hallway once during the day and it got emptied. I went to the front desk to get refills of shower gel and towels. The shampoo kept coming off the wall but that's ok. Bed was comfy, the thermostat actually worked, and the refrigerator also could be cooled to under 40 degrees with the quick-cool function. There is a coffee maker but I didn't try it out. They had coffee and tea in the mornings. I visited BJ's brewhouse once that is adjacent to the hotel. It was fine. I also walked to Legal Seafoods, and you can walk to Burtons. Natick Mall and Shoppers World are around the corner. As a pet friendly hotel, I did hear some dog barking. I don't mind but something to be aware of as it can wake you up. I can attest that their fire alarm is sufficiently loud as it went off one morning and we evacuated.

Off of Route 2A on Lexington Road in the heart of Minutemen country, I arrived at the Hawthorne Inn, my favorite bed and breakfast in Concord, Massachusetts. The owner of the inn, Marilyn, greeted me at the entrance and showed me to my room. The inn is furnished with furniture, art, and artifacts that are representative of colonial New England of the 19th Century with other kinds of art, such as Japanese ukiyo-e prints, Haitian voodoo masks, and 17th Century Persian helmets, scattered about here and there. Walking into my room, I noticed a cat on the 4 poster bed in my room. After dinner I sat in the sitting room downstairs where the fireplace was blazing and I met some of the other guests in the inn. We talked some more in the morning when we ate breakfast in the communal dining room together. Breakfast included your choice of coffee, tea, muffins and other baked goods, a seasonal fruit plate, yogurt, or granola. Rooms at the inn range from $125 - $325 per night depending on the season. After breakfast, I went into downtown Concord to look for an essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance, which I found in a book in my room. In the essay Emerson emphasizes the importance of avoiding conformity and trusting in our own ideas and instincts: "Trust thyself, every heart vibrates to that iron string...." This spirit of individuality and the belief that there is no problem that we can't handle if we apply ourselves to the solution is what attracts me to New England, to Concord, to the Hawthorne Inn. There's a sense of history there where our country was essentially founded, a creative energy burns there also where so many creative thinkers and writers lived. Walden Pond, the Minutemen Park, the old North Bridge where the "first shot heard round the world" was fired are all in Concord. It's worth visiting to remember that "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles."

Must say that the inside of the Inn was absolutely gorgeous! We were sitting by ourselves for the majority of our meal. Our waitress, Melissa, did an excellent job. We opened with adult beverages, all of them having colonial sounding names. Must say my Manhattan was delicious! After reviewing menu, I decided to start with the New England clam chowder and my wife ordered their chicken quesadilla. I followed up with ordering their Cobb salad but requested the chicken be blackened. The chowder came out relatively quickly and was indeed delicious! Her meals came out fairly quickly thereafter. My wife noted that her chicken quesadilla is probably the best that she had ever had. Being born and raised in Southern California I take that as a magnificent compliment. My Cobb salad was delicious as they had several tasty ingredients and my chicken was blackened! It was delicious! We decided to splurge for a dessert, Boston cream pie. It was a trifecta, all delicious!
