Off of Route 2A on Lexington Road in the heart of Minutemen country, I arrived at the Hawthorne Inn, my favorite bed and breakfast in Concord, Massachusetts. The owner of the inn, Marilyn, greeted me at the entrance and showed me to my room. The inn is furnished with furniture, art, and artifacts that are representative of colonial New England of the 19th Century with other kinds of art, such as Japanese ukiyo-e prints, Haitian voodoo masks, and 17th Century Persian helmets, scattered about here and there. Walking into my room, I noticed a cat on the 4 poster bed in my room. It was very comfortable, very cozy. I hung out in my room with the cat for a while before going out to downtown Concord for dinner. After dinner I sat in the sitting room downstairs where the fireplace was blazing and I met some of the other guests in the inn. We talked some more in the morning when we ate breakfast in the communal dining room together. Breakfast included your choice of coffee, tea, muffins and other baked goods, a seasonal fruit plate, yogurt, or granola. Rooms at the inn range from $125 - $325 per night depending on the season. After breakfast, I went into downtown Concord to look for an essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance, which I found in a book in my room. In the essay Emerson emphasizes the importance of avoiding conformity and trusting in our own ideas and instincts: "Trust thyself, every heart vibrates to that iron string...." This spirit of individuality and the belief that there is no problem that we can't handle if we apply ourselves to the solution is what attracts me to New England, to Concord, to the Hawthorne Inn. There's a sense of history there where our country was essentially founded, a creative energy burns there also where so many creative thinkers and writers lived. Walden Pond, the Minutemen Park, the old North Bridge where the "first shot heard round the world" was fired are all in Concord. It's worth visiting to remember that "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles."

One person had a very tasty Hot Veggie Mess (as the name implies a mix of different vegetables); another had an All American (eggs, bacon, done right. This was accompanied by a Cran Muffin. I had a perfect Classic Eggs Benedict with additional bacon. Drinks included orange juice, hot tea,and Cappuccinos. The total came to $84 not including the tip (worth it). Embrace your customers. Being met by a masked worker is NOT welcoming. I felt she thought we were putting her out and toxic to her. This was our home for 2 days and we should not feel like that. The staff were VERY friendly and greeted me each time I went and out of the property, The rooms were modern and nice for a Residence Inn and most importantly, the bed and pillow were comfortable. Rooms are ok, not clean. Keys stop working after you use them. Also please be aware it's a refugee house and not an actual hotel. I told a Concord local I was staying there and her response was "surprised that place is still open". Spend the extra 50 dollars a night on a nicer place, because you'll be sleeping with one eye open.

However, when I return to my room, in spite of the hangtag, my room have been cleaned my electric toothbrush, the items in the refrigerator and a few other things were gone. It was close to departure time, but enough time to accomplish that. I went downstairs to the checkout desk and waited for a manager to come from another area at that point I explained the circumstances. She contacted the person in charge of Housekeeping. Apparently she told me when it looks like the person is gone. Housekeeping goes in and does cleaning early in spite of the hangtag which is your way of assuring privacy. At least I thought that was the way Hampton in worked Housekeeping manager was able to find the person who had cleaned the unit. Happily all items were returned in about 15 minutes time and nothing was missing unfortunately nothing that had critical information. Because I was so delayed, I arrived too late to join my girlfriend for a planned luncheon. In the past, I thought Hampton inn were reliable. I would like some kind of compensation and would like to be sure that this review is posted so that other travelers are aware of this Hampton practice of violating privacy, even when adequate notification is given. The sitting room was really awesome to have, but I didn't feel comfortable sitting on anything because of the stains in the couch. The rooms need an extreme deep cleaning and then there would be no issues. The breakfast was also not great. Unless you waited in line for a freshly made omelette, I would not suggest eating anything. The bagels were stale and the rest of the food that was out in the open, just was not enjoyable. In theory, the place isn't terrible, but definitely wasn't as nice as I was hoping for.
