Quite a fun way to end our Chicago visit. Resi's is based on a less popular adaptation of a German gaststätte or bar/restaurant. A ton of distraction on the walls. Plenty to get lost in. It's a small room but compensated by a nice outdoor patio. At the same time, eight folks is not a problem for these guys to handle. Eight is a most perfect number for us. The rules are simple. Divide up your entree. As each plate passes, drop a portion and pass it on. If you really don't like something, either give it back, find someone at the table who wants it or just finish it anyway. Now you know what to order next visit, when it's just the two of you. The food here is surprisingly good. Not a bad dish on the menu and no shortage of smiles from the staff. Our waitress started off a bit rocky, but really brought it around and rocked the place. Two words, BIG TIP (even though we made her job easier). The steins stayed full and the other drinks flowed very nicely. Everyone ate and drank like kings and enjoyed our last night together. The bill for the evening I'm told was only $300 for 8 guests. This place is just the best. Chill vibes, great food, good prices, friendly service. We got the wurst plate (essentially a sausage sampler) to die for. Dam I've been here dozens of times over the years. I can't believe I never wrote a review for Resi's Bierstube before. Resi's is an old world German pub w/good beer & food. When I was going to UIC I use to come here w/my roommate every once in a while to partake in libations. The former owner use to sit at the bar & drink himself into oblivion often passing out at the bar while the German umm paa music was playing. Visited Resi's with a small group on a Wednesday night around 8:30p. There is a ton of open space on the patio as well as inside. I was disappointed that a lot of the bottles/cans were out of stock but the bartender took his time with all of us asking what kind of beer we like and made great suggestions. I ordered a knackwurst with a side of sauerkraut. The knackwurst was delicious but made the bun too soggy to eat with my hands -- wasn't a big deal though. The sauerkraut was a bit bland. I'd recommend this place to get some simple brats and good beer for a relaxing night. We came for some bratwurst and large pretzels, but no pretzel tonight for us. They had a limited food menu because their kitchen reopened the day before. In general, the kitchen is small so when it's busier the wait for food tends to be longer. We got our food quickly today. The bratwurst was good with the toasted bun. I got spaetzle (german butter noodle) as a side instead of the potato salad ($8 total). The potato salad that normally comes with it sold out for the night. It was bland, but that's to be expected of buttered noodles. I mixed a little bit of horseradish for more flavor. The horseradish is strong here. I wanted a large beer mug today and went with the 1L of Pschorr Lager $15. There's something satisfying about drinking beer out of a very large mug. The inside bar/pub has a laidback (almost dive bar like) vibe where locals get their drinks at the bar. It's an older bar so don't expect anything fancy. The back patio is nice and quiet too. Unfortunately, a lot of their normal selection of draft beer was out, but there was still many to choose from. Hanging out at Resi's is like visiting your grandparents basement that they changed into a rec room bar in the 1960s. Every time I'm here I remark that it still hasn't changed. And why should it? As Nick Mason once said it's nice to keep a few of the old dinosaurs around. Stiegl goldbrau and regular are on tap along with Hofbrau, Warsteiner and some other German beers. I've never ordered food here, it's supposed to be pretty good even though the kitchen is about the size of a broom closet and I can't see how they cook anything in there (the stove was going full bore the night I stopped in though). The night I was here a couple guys were doing shots of this liquor that's kind of like Jaegermeister. I can't remember the name of it, but after I remarked on it and tried to read the bottle they bought us a couple shots. I actually like Jaegermeister and this stuff was better. Service was very slow when we went. I think there was only one server working so we felt bad. There was also apparently a new chef that day and the quality of the food reflected that. This was during the summer so hopefully things have gotten better since then, but it may be worth looking at recent reviews to see if things have gotten better. Good thing they have a cute beer garden because the inside smelled like a men's locker room and was 20° hotter than the 87° outside. The beer we literally waited 25 minutes for arrived slightly cooler than room temperature. The $14 pretzel was roller rink Gordon Food Service quality. The cheese it came with was some sort of imitation Merkts spread, only entirely devoid of any flavor or character. People smoke DIRECTLY outside the front door, so not only does the bar smell like cigarette smoke, but you also get to walk through it when you decide to bail early and continue dinner elsewhere. read more

First time here and it was a good visit. We decided to enjoy the beer garden. A nice little area tucked behind the building. It was very secluded feeling and you really didn't hear Irving at all which was really nice. Friend and I split the very large pretzel and the schnitzel dinner. The pretzel was very good. Warm, soft and fresh. She enjoyed the mustard. We both enjoyed the cheese. It was a little oily, like it separated a bit. We both enjoyed the dinner too. The large was perfect to share. The meat was a bit tough in spots. The breading and fry was perfectly crispy. Spatzle was fantastic. I think there might have been a bit of a sauce on it either way it was great. The atmosphere and food was really good and we both had a great time just hanging out in the beer garden. read more

Went here with my dad this time and he said he's been going here for about 30 years! He's always loved it. We got the schnitzel dinner and the shabogyen bratwurst dinner. I've become a big fan of this place. The outdoor patio is awesome. It's a really cute spot to sit and chill with some beers and bites. Overall, the place has an authentic feel. They have numerous beer offerings. The menu is fairly plentiful. And it's all authentic faire. The brats are great. I absolutely love the potato salad. We visited just for drinks when it was beautiful outside and sat in the back area on the patio. I've heard that sometimes service here isn't that friendly for those who aren't regulars, but I thought everyone was really nice. As I write this long overdue review, winter has descended upon Chicago, the temperature has plummeted to a frosty 16 degrees, and I am casting my thoughts back to glorious summer, sitting in the back of Resi's Bierstube, in THE BEST BEER GARDEN IN THE CITY OF CHICAGO, enjoying a cool mug of German beer. That's right. This place has been here for a long, long time, and the beer garden in the back is (for whatever reason) not that well known. Sadly, one of the 100 year old maple trees died a few years back, and the other one is in jeopardy. And that hurts the ambiance a tad. But let's be clear: this beer garden is paradise. I recently wrote a review for a nearby Germany restaurant (Laschet's) which got a bit of attention. But I owe it to Resi's to let everyone know why you need to come to Resi's Bierstube at least once (and if you do, you will come back, I promise you): 1) Best beer garden in the city of Chicago. Unless you don't like real beer. This is certainly one of the oldest beer gardens in the city. 2) Best Schnitzel in the city of Chicago (now that the Metro Club is long gone - Peppo, wo bist du?). Big, huge portions of pork or chicken schnitzel (they even have turkey), cranked out of a tiny little kitchen on pans made before you were born, cooked perfectly (no gristle, which is more than I can say for a more famous place with a bigger rep further north on Lincoln), with or without gravy, and your choice of german potatoes (sliced and fried) or (more better) spaetzle. 3) Huge, fantastic German beer selection including rotating seasonal brews. In this wonderland of micro-brews and craft beers, one can forget how outstandingly spectacular it is to sit back and sip a cold BBK or Bitburger on a sweltering August evening beneath the trees. Or to have a choice of several different, authentic Marzen biers during Oktoberfest. Prost! If you're going non-schnitzel, I recommend the Thuringer plate. Comes with German bread ("brot") and lovely brown mustard. In the winter time, with the beautiful beer garden closed, this place is a bit more like your uncle Hans' basement: vinyl floor tiles and fake wood paneling and (usually) some loud dudes arguing over sports or politics while the Blackhawks or Bulls are on TV in the background.. It's authentic and very un-glamorous, but I love it anyway. This place is as German as they come. The waitresses tend to be long-tenured veterans, and in true German fashion, they don't fawn all over you. So get over it! It's not bad service, they're just not going to chat you up for 1/2 an hour because there are 25 other people waiting for their beer! Just hold onto that fabulous beer garden in your minds and we can all make it through the winter. Resis, I will see you next spring! (...and probably a few times this winter, too...) read more

We finally made it! I have been wanting to take my hubby and father in law here forever. I have read the reviews of the food on Yelp and couldn't wait to come, but it just never panned out. Well, we made it on Saturday. And it didn't disappoint...food wise. This is a no frills German restaurant. Fine by me, we're here for the food not the atmosphere. We ordered some beverages, next time I will get some German beer. Our server was very nice but you could tell she was really busy this evening. We ordered potato pancakes for our app to try and they were delicious. Me and the FIL had schnitzel for our entry, I got spaetzle and it was really good. The FIL got German potato salad, he said it was ok. My husband ordered the Hungarian goulash and it was also really good. We were pretty pleased. I would come back again for some dinner. I probably wouldn't recommend it for a date night spot, but great for a delicious family dinner. read more

I am not a good German girl. Oh sure- I've got the German surname, my grandparents came over from the "old country" and spoke German to us growing up and cooked all things German on Sunday afternoons. But seemingly- none of that stuck. I don't speak a word of German and German food is pretty much at the bottom of the list of foods that I eat. So that aside- on a recent sultry Summer's evening- I had a chance to go to Resi's with the Yelp Beer Garden Club. My biggest concern? Knowing that the only German food that I like is a big stein of German Beer and I knew that something else had to go in my stomach as well. Well- problem solved. While Resi's has the traditional Germanic fare- they also have a menu of regular bar food, so one patty melt later I was ready to take on their beer list. A friend suggested a Spaten beer (crisp and refreshing) which was the perfect choice for the evening. They have a wide variety of beers both on tap and in the bottle to suit most everyone's needs. I'd stick to beer here as those who were drinking mixed drinks seemed to find the pours a little weak. The beer garden itself is pretty big with many tables scattered around. The high fence and trees, however, pretty much keep any breeze from entering the space so you might want to go when the weather is a little more temperate or risk melting in the great outdoors. Inside- there are these huge round booths (built for an oom-pa-pa band perhaps?) that are hard to navigate and trust me- go to the restroom before sitting down as you will have to have everyone slide around to let you out! My favorite seat? Sitting at the bar and talking to some of the "regulars". An interesting bunch that is for sure. Since I am not a German food fan- I doubt I would go out of my way to come to this place unless I was in the neighborhood and had a hankering for a German beer served outside. But the prices were reasonable and the service pretty good given how busy it was. Auf Wiedersehen. read more

Resi's is a very unassuming neighborhood pub on Irving Park, with signage so unobtrusive that it is very easy to walk past the place. While the interior is fine, the quiet outdoor garden patio hidden in the back is the best spot to relax while eating some German food washed down by a tall weiss beer or two. The turkey schnitzel was tasty, though its tender meat loaf-like texture was not what I was expecting. There are several sausage items on the menu, including a decent thuringer sausage that was also good as leftovers for lunch on the following day. read more
