I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, it's a very laid back and quiet space, truly a neighborhood space and beyond, geared toward conversation. Nice decor, clean and somewhat unassuming. Staff are nice. On the other hand, it's a bit bougie and Andersonville-y and not the dive bar that they're trying to market. Prices are on the high side (in my opinion, especially for this supposed dive bar): $6-8 for a pint as of this writing. Bottles of NA beer are $5.50 and it's Sharps. Sip slowly. I don't know about the pizza here, so I can't comment on that. I'd go back, but not of my own choosing. read more

The nicest staff in a little late night restaurant/diver bar. We only came here late night for drinks but it was a great experience. Sat at the bar and were greeted. We had some light trash beers (ex-miller lite) and it was $17 without tip for three. A bit steep but isn't Chicago? The owner (I think) did make us a free shot when he learned it was my friends birthday. Then he helped me drink it when I asked cause I'm old. Appreciate that. Seriously great people. Inside is a bit run down but it feels safe and comfortable. Love the energy and would definitely go back. read more

Konak has all the makings of a solid, cheap, chill neighborhood bar. The owner Ali is a cool dude (as are all the guys there), it serves beer and burgers, it's surrounded by expensive/specialty bars and restaurants, it's got plenty of seating and a pool table. And a fish tank. Unfortunately, it tends to get jam-packed on random weekends. Exactly when you want a neighborhood bar to be relatively EMPTY! The bartenders claim this is due to party buses and random groups roving up and down that area of Clark. I don't mind crowds, but that always means poor service for the regulars because the staff isn't ready. Also, Konak looks like a dive bar, but it's prices don't reflect the same. Compare the prices of, say, Fireball and Jameson, to certain bars even in Lincoln Park and the LP prices will be far lower. Lastly, the food is passable. Konak claims "pizza" in its moniker, but it's nothing special at all, especially for the price. How long does it take to make a CHEESE pizza? Lovely bar, vibes were great, I stopped in for a quick bite before going home. Almost an hour after ordering, I asked how long until it was done, and he said a few more minutes. Then, 10 minutes later, he came back and offered a free beer for the wait. He said it would be another 5 minutes. I'm not sure why it is taking so long as it was one cheese pizza. I had to extend my parking, and as I'm writing this, it's been another about 7 minutes since we got the beer. Over a hour and my pizza still isn't here. When is it coming? We ordered onion rings, mozzarella sticks, chicken tenders, and two small pizzas. Took 25 minutes to get the apps and they were typical frozen to fried bar food. When the pizzas were slow to come out, we asked and the server told us 10 minutes, then when we complained he said 8, then 5 minutes. 10 minutes later, after the server checked again, the cook came out trying to tell us it takes an hour to cook a pizza. He was a little too aggressive. This is not Pequods and no one told us it would take that long. We went a block away to Jet's and got a slice to go after cancelling our order. Still love the 'nak. Just had to comment on the b.s. reviews. Yep, the pizza toppings are overpriced. I've brought this up many times. There's nothing the staff can do - they don't make the menu. Order the special - eggplant, jalapeno, and garlic. It is priced fairly. If you order a pizza with 5 toppings here it's not worth it. But when you order pizza anywhere, it's your job to read the menu and look at the pricing. I do that every single time. Ordering multiple toppings is expensive. It's almost impossible to find a place to get a good deal like that. At Konak, it's the special I mentioned. Otherwise get plain cheese. You have to pay for what you order. To go off on bar staff because the menu is overpriced AFTER you ordered and ate the food... this is unreasonable. Also the mozzarella sticks are the best I've ever had, and the house-made chips and salsa and lentil soup are the bomb. Konak is a dive bar with a late kitchen, daily specials, good drafts, great staff, great regulars, and a neighborhood spirit. For fancy meals and drinks that cost 50% more, try Hopleif. Your classic dive bar format, but with a European twist, featuring some European beers I hadn't heard of before, but you also got your standard PBrs and old styles. Actually the food we got was pretty good, it was a flatbread style sausage pizza. It's located right next to the craft beer bar Hopleaf, so it's good to stop here after that bar to take it easy for a bit. Bartenders were nice, service was good. Be aware of pizza!! Not worth it!! It was my first time at this local no frills bar. My group of friends decided to order some fettuccine and a pizza. We ordered the large 14". The bar keep asked what we wanted on it. Because I was unfamiliar with the menu I selected multiple toppings without seeing the fine print price jump for each additional. I was in shock when the bill arrived with a whopping $3.25 charge per topping. It made a $14 pizza turn into a $30.00 pizza. The pizza was a nothing fancy flat crust bar pie. The bar keep was underwhelmed by my shock and gruffly shoved them menu in my face to snuggly point out the toppings prices. So long story short, read the menu so you don't suffer my fate. For me, this is not the place I will want to ever be a patron of again due to their unreasonable ask for not much in return and unfriendly service. read more

Sorry, Konak. You just kept disappointing. First it was the "No eating" signs in your back lounge area. Then you turned on some loud music and pretended that you couldn't change the volume. When I ordered a pizza, it took you two minutes to ring up; if I'd known that you were going to walk across the room out of earshot, I would have ordered my beer in the same breath. That added another two minutes to the process. Your draft beer selection is lackluster. Worst of all, your pizza sucks. The vegetables tasted fresh, but the crust, sauce, and cheese are all a big fat NYET. This stuff was so bland and barely a step above the worst freezer pizza. You have a pool table and since you're never full, I suppose that you serve a meager purpose as a desperation Hopleaf overflow. read more

I visited this place on a whim with friends last night. I am a pool player and we were looking for a place to play and have fun. We ended up at this place and were happy that the place was relatively empty and had a decent pool table. There was a song that came on and it said the NWORD. Using the hard R (We know what this is). It was a country song. Everyone at the bar kinda stopped for a minute after they heard it but the young latino gentleman did not (Koray D according to the receipt). I walked over and asked him to turn the song off and he looked at me like I was crazy and walked back to the bar. He only TURNED IT DOWN. I then called him a racist M*******F***** and left. The manager came out (older latino gentleman) and asked what happened. I told him and he apologized. I just find it really crazy that the young man did not turn the music completely off. It was insulting. Especially coming from a fellow person of color. This put a damper on the rest of my night as my friends (white men) actually had to console me. I cried after leaving. I just moved to Chicago in November. This by far has been my worst experience here. I wont be returning. The one star is for the manger who actually came out to see what happened. read more

If you are tired of places that try to overcomplicate everything and be fancy pants and would like to just relax in an unpretentious neighborhood place, Konak will make you really happy. The food may not be the best, and the drinks may not be the best, but the experience and they way I feel when I leave IS the best. You go here for pizza made in no discernible style and Woodbridge Merlot, not for a tasting menu! The house special pizza is mysteriously delicious and the drinks are cheap. The first time I came in they played a bunch of Queen and then bunch of Notorious B.I.G. It was heavenly. I like the staff, they're pleasant and attentive. We had drinks at Konak and that's all I have had here. This is one of the "overflow" bars to head to if Hopleaf is ultra-crowded (and usually it is). The TV was showing some international soccer matches, which is a plus for me. I hear the pizza is not bad, so perhaps I'll give it a try next time. read more

After having lived in Andersonville for over a year I finally got around to checking out Konak. The space is bigger than I imagined and the secluded pool table area in the back is a nice touch. The beer list is definitely sub par, but the prices are really good for the beers they have. The wife and I were there on a Friday night so we got to split the $7 doughboat special which was a great price for how big the thing was (see pic in gallery). The flavor wasn't jumping off the plate by any means, but it was still tasty and something that you can't get anywhere else in the neighborhood. Guys if you're going here for fine dining you're doing it wrong. This is D I V E food. This place is mainly for drinks in a quirky place that has pool. The best thing here is the Efes beer. It is Turkish beer imported to SKOKIE and it has the importers Yahoo (sbcglobal? I can't remember) email address on it. It's usually 3 or 4 bucks. It tastes kind of like butter and the bottle is pretty cool. My experience with the food is to stick with pizza. The service is definitely goofy. One time I paid with a credit card and the owner yelled at me about my last name. "What is this name?" Eventually I figured out he was asking what nationality it was. When I told him he goes "NO THIS IS TURKISH NAME!" I have no idea he seemed angry about it but I think this is a Turkish owned business. Another time the bartender guy said they had a special for "15% off old food" I said "old food?" And he said "all" - I got the chicken chops and spent an hour in the fetal position. Quirky. Despite the food issues I'd say it's an ok place for beer and blue bathrooms (everything is blue even the toilet). read more

"Please don't let there be ten, please don't let there be ten..." The thought kept flashing through my head. We had read (well everyone else had) Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" for the Yelp Summer Book Club. I had a copy from high school before PC was entirely in vogue so I read "Ten Little Indians." I hope I'm not giving away too much to say the first character to die in the book was poisoned. I won't go so far as to say I worried about this fate with the food at Konak, but I also won't say I wasn't glad when more than ten people showed up. To avoid legal action, picture the characters in this review going to the bathroom to, you know, or just leaving and not going to the morgue. "Ten book club Yelpers, doing just fine...one ate the pizza, and then there were nine..." Konak trumpets that they are the home of vegetarian pizza. While I give them credit for that, I also put quotation marks around "pizza." The term weaksauce has almost become passe but I'm going to use it because that's what was on the pizza. Konak has found a way to actually bottle the concept. I wasn't even sure I had eaten a slice or two of David R.'s purchase when I was done. They claim the pizza is made fresh daily but I'd rather have had microwaved pie with some flavor. "Nine book club Yelper, wondering who's late...one ate the nachos, and then there were eight." The menu at Konak claims they use melted cheese on their bar nachos. I'm not sure what they melt but I'm guessing a block of velveeta from my order. The neon cheese covers a mixture of chips and jalepenos so vile, one couldn't help but thinking they were at a baseball game. But paid more. "Eight little Yelpers thinking they've been devlined...one checked the beer menu, and then there were seven..." The beer menu is probably the best part of the bar and the only reason it gets a second star. They stock multiple ciders (including Cider Jack and a splendid off-menu raspberry one) but their beer leaves a bit to be desired. I don't know why they bother with putting cute little flags on their menu when most of them are moderately priced American brews. "Seven Yelp readers, plans to come back nixed...one didn't like the service, and then there were six." The most comfortable seats in the house, a set of couches in the back, are a no-eating area. The music was loud and the staff claimed there was no way to turn it down. Food took forever to be served. If this place didn't steal prime real estate on Clark, I'd be amazed if it didn't shut down. But I made it out in one piece. "One little Yelper glad to have survived. Next time people go here, it will still be far less than a five." read more

On a night when you find yourself feeling rejected by a long wait for a table at Hopleaf, or just don't feel like being shoved around like a pinball while trying to enjoy the one or two beers you can get your hands on, slide a few doors down to Konak. Grab a seat, a drink, a little elbow room, and relax. Going to Konak is what I imagine going to my Turkish uncle's, if I had one, place would be like. I'm always well fed, treated like family, and my glass is rarely empty. The bartender keeps me buzzed by offering up his own special concoction of free shots from the bar. Special bright green Christmas shot, anyone? If your thoughts turn to eats, the hanging signs around send (not so) subliminal messages about trying the chicken chops. Pally, listen to every signal here, because those chops are tasty. For less than $10, you get 3 pieces of juicy, flavorful chicken, pitas, fries (or on occasion, baked potato), and a small salad. Wash it down with a drink special, such as a $3 Sierra Nevada, and you've got yourself a deal, daddy-o. Head to the back and chill in the cozy corner, watch TV (usually sports), play pool, or just grab a bar stool or table. This is a perfect spot to hit up with a group of friends or even a date, although I wouldn't recommend it as a destination for a first date to impress. However, any other time you'll find plenty of spots to hang with your hottie and carry on a conversation without being overpowered by the jukebox. Stop in sometime. Look for me in the back read more

So when you break up (Simon's) its often hard to find another that has all of the qualities of the former and then some. No its not! Konak's is awesome. Very low key vibe, family owned business, super nice people, great service by the adorable Tuba! And the kicker? A $4.00 glass of Pinot Grigio that rocked. Yes they have interesting Turkish beer available and yes they have a pretty large menu of bar food basics with a Mediterranean touch but it was the open air front windows, the chill vibe and the basketball playoffs in the background (not the focal point) that got me at first sight. The place is huge so there is plenty of room, no need to be crammed into one of the neighboring establishments and greeted with surly beer snob service. Rarely do I walk out of a restaurant feeling like I've been robbed. I wouldn't eat the food here again if it was free. Despite the restaurant not being busy, it took 30 minutes to get the appetizer sampler. I've never had deep fried food taste so bland before. The marinara sauce for the mozzarella sticks was ice cold. The chicken tenders was not crispy at all. The onion rings had no flavor. There was literally nothing good about this meal. Not a single thing. It's been a long time since I've had a meal so completely disappointing. Konak is the Sybil of bars. It has gone through so many incarnations I've lost track. Now it's settled into something of a sports bar. The place is littered with flat screen TVs, which on a recent outing were playing everything from soccer to women's college softball. The big draw of Konak is that you're all but guaranteed a seat. The front room has a bar and several tables, the second room has a bunch more tables, including one for pool, and the back room has couches and a fish tank. When Hopleaf and Simon's are packed, Konak has space available. There's a 50/50 chance you'll see lesbians playing pool, so that's a bonus. The bar serves food, which is nothing special and more expensive than you'd expect. (8 to 10 bucks for a burger?) But after a few beers, anything could happen. Monday, the whole menu's 20% off. Konak has apparently become an actors' hangout. The wall opposite the front bar is plastered with headshots of people you've never heard of. (Forgive me if your picture is up there.) But once one of them hits, Konak's got it made in the shade. read more

Chances are, I'm trying to avoid anyone going to or coming from the Hopleaf, since they usually only choose to muck up Clark St. from Thursday to Saturday night with beery wisdom and hilarious staggering. If I venture out into my neighborhood to enjoy a beverage on a Saturday night (which I rarely do, since every funking bar on Clark from Foster to Bryn Mawr is considered to exist solely to suck up the spillover from Hopleaf), it's to Konak or a place a lot like it. Stopped in while waiting for friends to go to a trip to Hopleaf. Helped myself to some $4 Carlsburg and caught some of the Bulls game on some flatscreens that were a bit too small for my tastes. Browsed the menu that included some salads, hummus, burgers, pizza, and decided to have a burger. The burger came with a healthy dose of red onion and was 1/3 of a pound for the price of $6.95, a change of pace from the usual 1/4 lb. burger. Other entertainment in the bar includes a pool table (I don't remember if it is free), electronic darts and plenty of room to sprawl out, unlike its neighbor next door. Konak is a good alternative to the now overly trendy Hopleaf and its excessive waits to get anything done. read more

If I had written this review on my first visit, I would have rated it much higher. However, I've picked up many pizzas for the last couple of months and now say it's decent pizza for a pretty good price. I can't vouch for anything else on the menu except for their pizzas. I like not paying much for a no non-sense pie that just needs to not suck. They do this good and as I said before cheap. Konak....the bar that unless you press your nose up against the glass at night, you'd never be able to tell what the place was really like inside. I've always thought it was a pizza joint, when in fact folks have told me it really isn't. It isn't a dive bar, though some folks call it one. Call it Hopleaf's poor cousin, but in a good way. The type of cousin that welcomes you any day of the week and has enough room for you and your friends and also is gentle with you, particularly your pocketbook. Though I've not eaten here, alcohol is another matter and prices are affordable with specials usually going on. There is a pool table and darts along with a nice little jukebox. My roommate indicated not a good first date place, but honestly, I'd take a first date there just to see the reaction....a negative one....kick him/her to the curb because Konak is a great little place that doesn't make itself into something it isn't. For too many years I've never taken Konak seriously enough. With Hopleaf next door, Simon's down the road, and so many other places to eat and drink nearby, one could wonder why anyone would ever go in to Konak at all. What do people see in this place? How are they still in business? Best answer I can come up with: This bar is the easiest place to be in Andersonville. While other establishments nearby are crowded, overpriced, gimmicky, or endangered by newer developments, Konak suffers from none of these complications. You can always get a table here, no matter what day or time. The menu for food and beer is very uncomplicated, and reasonably priced. The beer list, for example, covers whatever mood (and financial circumstance) you happen to be in. Konak is also distinguished for being one of the very last Turkish bars in a neighborhood that used to have more of them. But unlike some other past and present Turkish spots in Chicago, Konak doesn't go overboard. They keep it subtle. You may notice some Turkish decorations on the wall and Turkish beer on the menu, but that's really it. No cheesy fabric on the wall or cushions on the floor. It's just a regular place where you can meet your budies and drink. The food is sometimes a disappointment. I wish it was better. But there's plenty to choose from, and I plan to explore their food menu further. They are famous for their "chicken chop," which I haven't tried yet. The pizza could definitely be better. However Konak is still a good place to catch dinner if you want to avoid paying so much more at other places nearby. They are one of the last bars on Clark street where you can eat dinner for under $10. The servers and clientele are all friendly, and I've never had a bad time here. If I were basing this review on sentiment alone, I would have to give four stars. But in objectively comparing to other places, Konak is only average. And as Andersonville changes, I'll come to appreciate that "average" even more. read more

This place might have the friendliest staff of any bar I've been two. After two visits the bartender knew my name and was buying me shots. The whole place is clean and chic, but very affordable. They have a strong selection of beers, make killer drinks, and have excellent food (try the jalapeo/sausage pizza or the hummus). If you like to multi-task when you drink they do have a pool table, a dart board, and a golden tee game, as well as an internet juke box. The dart board is poorly located (too close to a counter to get a good distance away, and the darts soar across the hallway leading to the restroom). This is advantageous, however, is someone has been pissing you off, you leave to shoot some darts, and they are forced to run by and dodge your attack just to make it to the restroom. Overall, one of the most fun bars I've been to. I only wish they were a 4am-er. read more

I've been here a couple times since moving to Chicago. The vibe is nice and they genuinely seem to appreciate your business. I believe the establishment is owned and operated by a gregarious group of Turks. When all the lights are out at night, and it's just me, alone, I aspire to be a swarthy Turk. I just feel like it would make life easier. Anyway, the guy who runs this place really appears to be busting his ass to make it work, and it does. I stumbled in last night (Friday) looking for some chicken chops and asked if the kitchen was open. "No. Tomorrow, kitchen open 'til two (AM)." But the look he gave me said, 'It pains me to see that I am unable to fulfill your gastronomic desire.' He rounded the bar quickly, delicately touched me on the shoulder, and pointed to the rotisserie pizza, "Pizza in case." On this night our ships would merely pass, but I see a Saturday (today!) in the future where I roll in and the Turks greet me as one of their own, and offer up free golden squirrel shots and chicken chops. I am also developing a superficial resolve never to go to hopleaf, despite their sweet beer. From what I can tell it's some sort of exclusive, elitist establishment that may or may not do you the favor. Do Konak the favor. read more

I thought this place was above average. I walked in on a Sunday afternoon and of course there were no drinkers at the bar. I took a look at the menu and it looked promising. I had take out to go. The chicken chops were quite good. It was a chicken thigh/leg that was cut up to look like a pork chop. The seasoning was very tastey with... is that a hint of cumin? We also had the bbq beef sandwich on a roll. I liked the texture and the bbq flavor. It was sweet and salty and a little nutty which was a bit surprising. The bartender was nice to me while I waited for the food to come out. She even changed the channel to something we both seemed to enjoy on a show of these people who bought junk and made it worth something. I believe that was either TLC or Discovery Channel. We came here after a drink at Hopleaf (which is see is kind of a pattern among reviews). The bartender was nice and attentive. The beer selection is minimal, but they did have Goose Island on tap. The pizza was excellent. We got the super veggie pizza and we ate the whole thing. I never knew I would love broccoli on pizza. They had a few tvs on and a few tables filled, but all in all a pretty quiet, laid back bar. I would recommend if you are looking for a quiet place to chat. read more
