Oh Cafe Areni, so many thoughts when I think of this place. I remember my first visit I was thrown off because the food was delicious but the service was confusing. It wasn't as warm as you would expect. Then I go back and think about the way my mother (an older Russian woman) ran her business. A bit overpriced for what you get. I ordered a shish kebob plate which came with 4 somewhat small pieces of beef, maybe a cup of cooked rice, cabbage slaw and tomato cucumber salad. Oh also a charred whole jalapeno. The beef was seasoned well, but cooked to death and chewy. One of the pieces had connective tissue running through it which rendered most of the piece inedible. So in essence I got 3 pieces of beef kebob for the $20 I paid for the plate Salads were ok. Standard but that's fine. The cucumber tomato had dill and red onion, dressed with what I think was a bit of lemon and salt. The cabbage was a Russian style slaw w vinegar and salt. No complaints. Overall for the price I would have liked to have gotten double portion of beef. The portion I got seemed like a lunch special...smaller portion, cheaper type of deal. But it wasn't a lunch special. I ordered a full plate. The atmosphere was nothing to write about, nor was the service. After my plate of food was put down, i was never visited again. So you can't really justify the price if those are a none factor. In addition, my plate of food was accompanied by a basket of lavash flat bread. No yogurt dip, humus, or anything like that to enjoy with the bread. I didn't touch it. Maybe if it was fresh baked maybe I would tried it, but I can tell it was just store bought. So overall, I can't give it less than 3 stats because I ate my food and wasn't treated badly. The waitress was nice the moment I had with her. But again, if your going to charge $16.99 or $18.99 for a plate of food, as a customer I have a certain level of expectation. And this place didn't meet it so I will not be going back. Oh and btw I tipped at the register 20 percent. Which I'm not bragging about, but when I tip that also raises my expectations. I expect at least once for the waitress to visit and say is everything ok? Maybe offer up a dessert I can order? I don't know, I don't think I'm asking for too much. I discovered Cafe Areni on here shortly before Christmas and called over to order some meat for a dinner I was hosting. I was well received by the lady who took my order. She requested a deposit (it was a large order) and the remainder upon pickup. I pulled up shortly before my scheduled time and waited inside the well maintained restaurant. She offered me a cup of Armenian coffee while I waited for the food. Shortly thereafter, it was ready, I paid and she even helped carry to my car. Ordered 1 order lamb chops, 2 orders of beef lula, and 1 order of beef kebab. All in all was around 125 with delivery. Friendly welcome and the khinkali was really good. I tried their beef soup with olives, pickles, sausage and ham it was really interesting and good. I got it because they were out of the chicken soup and I was able to sample it which was really nice. I'll be back to try other items but I got my khinkali fix.
