Good lighting, good energy, good music, and a staff that understands hospitality is as much about making people feel comfortable as it is about serving food and drinks. Nothing feels rushed, yet everything moves with purpose. Los Angeles has no shortage of places competing for attention. Oy Bar doesn't need to. It has something far more difficult to create: a sense of place. This place is a dive bar diva! Dive bar vibes, super reminiscent of those small places across the SFV but SURPRISE elevated and sophisticated food. My friend and I went family style for two. We shared everything and ordered like there was no tomorrow! Here's what we stuffed our faces with: Shrimp & Chicken wontons - good shrimp & chicken mixture inside, the wrapper was a bit underdone for my liking. Seems like they were trying to be "al dente" but for me, wontons wrappers should be soft & silky. Bigger crispy garlic or crispy shallots would have been great on this. Scallops - not sure which we ordered. There were two on the menu, one on the regular and the other on the "Vey in the back" grill menu. Whichever we got was a nice super light fresh dish. I needed a little more salt, maybe salmon roe instead. Rock fish crudo - this sauce was THE BEST sauce of the night. The dikon and radish were sliced perfectly thin and provided just enough crunch to the dish. Fried vermillion rock fish collar - the chayote tendril addition to the sauce was epic. It brought a completely different flavor that I've never had to my palette. The chef achieved perfection with the crispy skin on this one. Cured Salmon Onigiri - I liked it but wanted to like it more! To be fair, I'm half Japanese, so I'm being uber critical. I was expecting a crispier shell and smokier flavor on the onigiri. The middle of the onigiri rice ball needed furikake mixed throughout. Koji-marinated skirt steak yakiniku - flavors were all spot on. The lettuce wrap and veggies were nice and fresh. My complaint is the chewiness of the steak and I'm a gristle fan but this was tough to take a bite without yanking it away from my mouth. OyBurger - this was a PHENOMENAL burger. The standout was the flavor and texture of the patty. They seasoned this perfectly! This was my favorite dish of the night (minus dessert, I love dessert) Tequila Sunrise Popsicle - tangy and sweet, super refreshing, this is going to be the "go to" all summer. Cherimoya sorbet - what a great new flavor to bring to dessert. It had a slight papaya essence to it. We loved this dessert too! Street parking wasn't too tough. It was a short walk around the corner. No reservations, walk in and take your chances. We got there around 6:30 on a Friday evening and got seated right away. Our server Brooklyn was a killer server. Let me start by saying that those of you who know me, I am an occasional drinker. I do like cocktails every now and then. One of my favorites are Margaritas, Martinis, Wine & Beer. Depending on my mood and who do I decide to go with. I have been to this quaint, romantic, OyBar twice before like 15 years ago. Once with a date, and another time with a friend. Both times had a marvelous time. The place is nicely dim, clean, and the service is impeccable in every way. They do have live music playing after 8pm. They are known for their Oysters and OY Burgers. Established 1972. Before I forget.. A friend of mine and myself decided to go to OY on Wednesday an hour after they opened. It was already happening. There were a lot of people at the bar and some were already on their 3rd drink. My friend and I ordered Margaritas and couple of appetizers to share. Quesadillas stole the show. She got Margaritas (2) on the rocks and I got a blended Coconut Margarita. Drinks tasted FABULOUS along with our appetizers. Super friendly, nice staff and that's all I can say about this particular visit. We will save some for my other visit, whenever that will be. Few parking spaces & gender neutral restrooms. Finally made our way to OyBar to celebrate my birthday. At 6pm on a Wednesday the palce was still jumping! We didn't need to wait for a table, but it was busy. We grabbed two spots at the bar and had wonderful service from Francis and friends. It was greta to see their banter and Francis experimenting with some cocktails. Throughout the evening, I enjoyed the Szechuan Negroni ($20), though it could have had more of the sichuan kick to it, the Bitter Cowboy ($18), and a spicy mezcal-based 'bartender's choice' ($18). JIm G. enjoyed the What's Up Doc? ($18), whiuch was mezcal, aperol, carrot-shrub, and lime. The Cured Salmon Yaki Onigiri was tasty ($9/piece), with creme friache, red onion, dill, miso butter, and everythign spice. We also greatly enjoyed the infamous Wagyu Pastrami Quesadilla ($22). For a birthday treat, we had to get dessert and ordered the carrot cake ($18). While it was pretty pricey, it was also crazy good! On my search for the best burgers, Oybar came up. It's a super divey feeling bar when you walk in but it is still has its charm and there's also a patio in the back. The menu is not what you'd expect at a bar like this as it has such a a unique combo of what looked like American, Japanese, and Indian. Maybe more fusion with other cuisines. Decided to start with the saag burrata, which had that hint of Indian flavor. Good amount of spinach with a good amount of burrata. A few crostini but I think the burrata got lost and but the spinach was great. Also has a special of a lettuce wrap with beef. Also good SE Asian flavor and good as well and could be a full entree. Then the OG Burger. What we came for and it kind of fell flat. Not enough flavor, felt overpowered by the other dishes we had. I decided to take myself out on a solo date after a stressful few weeks and had been really excited to try Oi Bar. It's super close to me, parking wasn't too difficult, and the space delivered immediately -- dim red lighting, cozy and moody, perfect for a night out solo. They had a Passover specials menu that looked amazing. I was tempted by the open-faced Hillel sandwich with matzo, wasabi butter, apple, wine reduction, and pine nuts. The smoked brisket with Coca-Cola curry also looked great when it came out for the couple next to me -- until I overheard them say the meat was tough and they sent it back. That helped me decide. I started with the freezer martini, ordered with both a twist and an olive. Clean, cold, and exactly what I wanted. I almost ordered a second. For my first dish I ordered the saag burrata -- Indian-spiced creamed spinach with burrata and grilled baguette. Fantastic. The burrata was cool and creamy, the spiced spinach underneath was warm and deeply flavorful. My only note was the bread -- three very thin slices felt skimpy for the amount of dip. A couple more would've balanced it perfectly. For my main I ordered the OG burger, mostly because I'm a horseradish lover and was excited about the horseradish crème fraîche. About two bites in I noticed it was extremely rare -- and I'm someone who appreciates medium rare, but this was beyond that. I let the server know, he handled it graciously, apologized, and had it remade quickly. I appreciated that. He also ended up comping it, which I genuinely wasn't expecting and went a long way. At that point I was finishing my martini and ready to head home, so I took the burger to go. The next day I reheated it -- bun on, everything still on it, minute and twenty seconds in direct heat. The outside was noticeably darker and crispier than the first one, clearly cooked harder this time. The flavors were there. I added a little hot sauce and it was working -- until I got to the middle. Still raw. Chewy in a way that wasn't medium rare, wasn't even close. As a chef I know what a burger should feel like after that much heat. The fact that it reheated to piping hot on the outside and was still raw in the center tells me the issue was in how it was formed or how thick it was packed -- and I have the pictures to prove it. I'll be honest -- it didn't stop me from wanting to go back. It just means I'm never ordering the burger again, which genuinely makes me sad because the flavor profile was there. The horseradish could've been punchier and the pickled onion more present, but the bones of the dish were good. It just couldn't execute consistently, twice. What I know is that OyBar has something. The creativity is real, the vibe is real, the saag burrata alone is worth the trip. I wish I tried out the the Oy burger with hoisin ketchup and Dijon -- that sounds more like what I was looking for. And I already told a friend we need to come back to share a few dishes because the menu feels like it's built for that. I live down the street from Oy Bar, and I used to come here when it was the Oyster Bar. I finally dropped in to check it out. It's very happening at Oy. Lots of people, lots of good food, lots of cocktails. Ambience is chic. I really enjoyed the matzo ball ramen and wish they would bring it back soon. Cocktails are amazing! Service is lovely but a little slow because of the intensity of the crowd. Oy Bar is a little pricey for my taste, but given the fact that I've already gone back, it must not be too much! read more

Been here a few times and most of the time it's great! I love their burger it's one of the best in town but it can be inconsistent depending on when you go, luckily this last time I went it was delicious. The hotdog was also good but it's actually on the smaller side than you'd think it can be good for sharing. The carrot cake was interesting I haven't seen a carrot cake have this density or texture but it was pretty good. The drinks are also great bartender Darren made them amazing. We returned to Oy Bar for our second visit after a couple of years. The atmosphere is still of a dark, cool, bar vibe, however, that is deceiving. The food is still excellent overall, but they have changed the "rules" to make this place a lot less customer friendly. We came around 5:30 on a Friday evening. There was already a 30-60 minute wait for a table, which we anticipated. They make you wait outside on the sidewalk for your table instead of being able to order a drink at the bar. It's for eaters only. The hostess told us if we wanted a drink, we needed to order from her. Fine, we perused the menu and I went to order drinks and was told the ordering system was down, and she'd come out to take a drink order. She never came out because it got pretty busy with customers showing up, but perhaps since the computers were down, they could have made an exception and let us order from the bartenders at the bar and hold a credit card like they did in the olden days but no such luck. They need to change the name of this place to no longer include the word "Bar". Once we were seated, things got better. We sat on the patio which was nicely designed and the waitress was friendly and attentive. We ordered the smoked trout tostada and the chicken liver mousse as appetizers. The tostada was tasty but small, the chicken liver mousse was excellent. The fried potatoes were top notch. My husband got the scallops which he loved. I got the Oye Burger which was way overcooked (and they don't ask you how you would Iike it done) so that was definitely a negative. Beignets for dessert were fine. Maybe I'd return on a weeknight, but even though the food is good, I feel like their rules around waiting and the bar take away from what could have been a great experience. read more

OY Bar is one of those rare hidden gems you'd never just stumble upon, from the outside, it's unassuming to say the least but you better buckle up. Honestly, I don't even know how to describe everything we had tonight except to say this: I wouldn't change a single thing. Oy Bar is great. We went there on a Friday night. Were able to get a table for 2 right away. We ordered the pickle bento box, the fried artichokes, the chicken donburi and the miso garlic lettuces. Everything was awesome. The pickle bento box is really interesting - pickled watermelon rind, mushrooms, daikon, cucumbers, asome kraut, kimchi - and more. All Of them were slightly different in their own way. For dessert, their season torte was pear. It was just ok compared to everything else but that's ok! Honestly the rest was so so good that there had to be one weaker dish and it was the dessert. Tried 3 different wines - 2 chilled reds and the rose. All good. Great vibe - kind of loud but high energy and was fun. If you're looking for a spot for quiet conversation, this isn't it when it's at the peak hour, but we enjoyed ourselves. Came out with family recently for a fun Saturday night here. Holy 1970s bar complete with the Kool cigarettes dispenser. What a fun spot in Studio City. We started out in the Vey Bar. It was nice sitting outside enjoying wine. Our table was ready in about 15 minutes. We moved inside and enjoyed it so much. Staff were amazing too! I loved the spicy noodles. What a trip. Finally got over the hill to check out this place. Was excited to meet a friend, get a drink and explore the menu. I arrived a bit early so did what any human bring who drinks and dines in a dimly lit spot. Sat at the bar and took a seat to get a drink. Maybe 4-5 people at a bar that sits probably 15. It's a Wednesday night after all, so that's fine. What happened next was crazy and has never experienced it anywhere. Not NYC. Not London or Paris. Def nowhere in LA, where I've been going to great places for 25 years. A hostess (I guess?) comes up to me and abruptly tells me I can't sit there. At the bar while waiting for my guest. She directs me to the entry way that's the size of maybe a photo booth telling me if I want a drink I can have it there. No bar for you!!! Um...ok, why? "It's the owners policy." But why?? "I don't know. You can ask him." Great, is he here? "No." I sit in the tiny space and other customers are asking me "what the hell is that?". No idea, I say but next the bar manager brings me my drink. I ask him what the deal is? "Owners policy. I don't know why." He then tells me "look I don't get it either but that's the rule." So two employees implementing a weird ass policy with no idea of how to explain it to the customer. Now...I'm a local. Third Gen LA. I grew up near this spot in Sherman Oaks. I even took a date eons ago in high school to the Oyster House when it was just a local joint. This location is at best Studio City-adjacent. Or maybe North Valley Village?? Either way, it's the Valley. On Moorpark. Next to Whitsett. Please. Owner: if you read this get a hold of yourself. Locals don't want that kind of attitude. Trust me. I don't care if it's in Silverlake, Venice, or any other neighborhood where wannabees hang out it's ridiculous. I also read that the owner is concerned about a project/ development in the neighborhood and what it may mean for the location. Hint: don't make your guests feel like unwelcome invaders. Anyone giving Oy Bar less than five stars doesn't know food. I've been several times and it gets better every time. Most recently I enjoyed an early dinner on the back patio, which was lovely. Chef Jeff visited. My favorite was the burrata paneer and joutine, but you can never go wrong with the staples like the artichokes or the Oy Burger. Ask for the El Fantasma drink with spicy bitters - it makes it even better than the original. This is a rare restaurant that I leave already thinking about "when can I come back." A small, intimate space with a really cool ambience that's hip and classy without trying too hard. (You know that type I'm talking about!) Oy Bar's dark, sexy ambience was really fun for a date night and the music was just the perfect volume for the space-- lively but not overpowering. The small space is well-served by an attentive wait staff and bartender. The cocktails were excellent: I stayed with a martini and they got it just right. The menu offerings are really interesting, a lovely mix of mostly smaller sharing plates and a small but well-chosen menu of main dishes. Most striking was the everything-bagel inspired salmon onigiri and pickle bento box. I remember this space's long-standing past iteration and Oy Bar is a great elevation of a Studio City classic that still manages to retain its charm. We luckily came on the earlier side so didn't have to wait, but by the time we left there was a line to get seated. It looks like they routinely change the menu, featuring various fusion dishes. If I could give this place 6 stars I would. The food, service, and ambience was perfection. The staff was fast and friendly. The food was perfectly cooked and so flavorful and the drinks were excellent. The pickle bento box was out of this world delicious. We brought in our own cake to celebrate a friend's birthday and they even added a candle to it. The staff was also very accommodating to me being vegan and didn't hesitate to check with the kitchen regarding the million questions I asked. I would definitely return. There is parking in the back but I chose to park on a side street. As you come in, you are given the option to be seated at the bar or a more intimate dinner table. We picked the bar. From there, the service was friendly, efficient and everything we ordered was absolutely delicious!! Like WOW!! I even forgot to take pictures. I was told the menu changes periodically. That night, I got to try the Peruvian Scallop Crudo, Miso Garlic Lettuces, Spicy Noodz, and a dish I forgot the name of but the main ingredient was Artichoke. Everything was killer!!!! So how is it that they have one of the most incredible food menus in LA? You just have to check it out and explore.
