Special of the Day - Seafood Curry in a Pineapple
Sheila C.

The service was pretty average. The staff didn't seem particularly interested, stopping by the table only when it suited them, and overall there wasn't much of a sense of customer care. Most of the servers looked like they'd rather be anywhere else. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior felt dark and a bit dreary. We were seated by the fireplace--which they did kindly turn on for us--but the room still lacked warmth.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The outdoor patio looked much more inviting, but it was too chilly to sit outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] As for the food, nothing really stood out. The French onion soup arrived looking messy and was barely warm. The Turkey BLT ended up being the best thing we ordered--the bacon was crisp and the sandwich had good flavor. The day's special, however, was disappointing. It had very little rice and was covered in an overly sticky, sweet sauce. While the portion was generous, it was mostly vegetables and not much else.

Rainbow trout

An exceptional dining experience, in the small tiny mountain town of Idyllwild, California. Owner and head chef, Edmund, prepares his dishes with the care that he would do for his own family...we had the rainbow trout, with the best sautéed vegetable medley I may have ever eaten. Our server Jen, was top shelf. This restaurant is a must do when visiting this lovely mountain village. Rudy

Not a fan. Service is all over the place. You don't know who your waiter is. Most of staff is very young. I felt very awkward. I had a drink there and also picked up food. Both not great. I went in to pick up food and the hostess immediately asked me if I had a service dog, I said yes and I'm just picking up food. What am I supposed to do, flag someone down outside? Then I see a dog in a woman's lap at the bar. Discrimination much? Won't he going back. Work on your food and customer service.

Chicken Cordon Bleu

My friends and I stopped in tonight for dinner, 4/10/25 at around 7:00pm. We ordered the pork chop, the chicken cordon bleu and the turkey BLT. Everything tasted delicious and the waiters were attentive and friendly. They have a bar so they can make drinks too, also Shirley Temples. The restaurant was cozy and had a comfy vibe. Dogs are permitted outside on the patio. I would definitely visit again and plan to try the blackened salmon dish or Gnomie's Ramen. Is a bit pricey though.

I ordered the special and it said on the sign that it came with greens but was rice The pork was so over done it was like eating a rock Expensive and definitely wasn't worth it.

Beef stroganoff legit tasty

Overdue review but don't understand all the negative reviews. We had a nice time, [[HIGHLIGHT]]atmosphere was cozy[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]], staff were super friendly, drinks were strong (or maybe it was the altitude), and the food was good. The beef stroganoff was great and would recommend. Compared to other restaurants in the area (we went to most of them) Gastrognome was our favorite. Will come back.

Beef Thai pasta. A MUST.

My husband ordered the Pepper Steak medium well and pretty much left the plate spotless! I would say order the steak medium and you should enjoy a little more. Other than that the staff is AMAZING, FRIENDLY, and WELCOMING! I HIGHLY recommend coming here. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Oh. We sat inside and let me tell you, it's cozy![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Oh, wait! We order an incredible appetizer ; the spinach artichoke and crab dip. A must!

Stopped by here after a very long hike so we were starving. We asked for outside seats and sat outside in a little half nook with a fan over us so no flies. We ordered mussels and tuna nachos for appetizers the mussels came out first and it was fresh and had a good flavor. Tasted like there was fish sauce in there, which we love. The nachos didn't come out until after our food came. I forgot to take a pic but did have a few bites. It was really dressed up. My friends got the steak and fish and they ate all their food. The flavor for the salmon was perfectly seasoned, and not salty. I however got the burger and not sure if it's because I was getting a sore throat but I did not like my burger. It was really greasy and I wasn't in a greasy mood. Our service was great and their water was really filtered and def not sink water. What sucked was they didn't have a glass of Prosecco, I would've had to order a whole half bottle.

My first time in Idyllwild for a weekend trip. As soon as we got here we were hungry and ended up at Gastrognome for lunch. As soon as we sat down we already regretted coming here. As my husband was looking through Yelp reviews and pictures our waitress approached us and took the order of the drinks. We decided it will be rude to leave so we stayed. She was somewhat friendly and took our order for food. Two orders of Cheeseburgers for my husband and son, I ordered the turkey blt. The burgers were somewhat good but the turkey blt was truly uneatable. I took a bite and put it down and didn't touch it. The bread smelled like the dirty grill (the marks on the bread) and the turkey inside was slice of actual turkey breast that tasted horrible, I was thinking it's deli turkey when I ordered. I truly can't describe how horrible it was. I only ate the fries that came with it which was ok. My family finished their burgers and we waited for about 20 mins for the waitress to come back , when my husband decided to go ask for the check and a to go cup for the soda my son got she told him she will get back to him at the table when she has a minute. Another few minutes passed she comes. Noticed that I didn't eat the sandwich and didn't even make a comment. Took the sandwich and dropped the check and left ... few minutes later brought the to go cup, we paid and left. Also keep in mind this place is old, the interiors smells like old carpet and furniture. It's very dark and not cozy at all. We ate at the outdoor patio area. Overall not a pleasant experience here and won't be back for sure. There are so many good restaurants nearby that we ate at during the days we stayed here.

I read a bunch of the 1-star reviews. I read some of the…read more4-star reviews. I have to go with 5-star tho. OVERVIEW of 5 : Seated without reservation (*make one! We got lucky*) Server was amazing Food expediter was super nice Food was delicious Elegant, fine dining experience Music was my mountain playlist (and not too loud) View of mountains for me. View of architecture for my wife. PARKING: Parking can be difficult in the small lot, but there's parking along the street too. INSIDE: It was perfect weather. 68ºF at 6pm after a warm day. They have "indoor/patio" style seating which may be difficult for some to access by multiple steps. We were seated at the top, a table away from the music, along the window side. They have heat lamps - but temps were perfect (lots of people and hot food warmed everyone up). I wanted to walk around the restaurant. The tiered architecture is interesting. FOOD: High End Vegan! Yes - I'm guilty of wanting to give them 5 stars just looking at their vegan menu. (And omnivore selection) Yes - I appreciate the care that it takes to prepare a plate. BUT This food was just delicious by itself. Even in a cardboard box, this food would've been amazing. VEGAN "cheese" appetizer (great for 2-3 people) Nut cheese was warm and tangy. This is NOT just cashews and nooch in a blender. It is spiced with something that brings a little heat. *you will want to lick the bowl. PRO TIP: The welcome bread with ... oh shit.... WELCOME BREAD / Garlic Olive Oil This crusty bread served with microplaned garlic + olive oil is fantastic. Garlic Fiend? You're gonna love this. Not a fan of garlic? What's wrong with you?! I mean... just serve from the oil side. Save some bread for your vegan cheese.... VEGAN CHEESE (cont.) Order the gluten free bread (a little more like Uti's toasted dinner roll) with your vegan cheese app. Omnivores at your table will be surprised how well this vegan cheese and wine pair with each other. TROUT I think my wife got the trout. She loved it. Light and delicate. VEGAN KIMCHI TOFU I've had kimchi. I've had tofu. We all have. This was prepared on a bed of roasty veg that was a great match to the salty kimchi. I don't know if there was a marinade preparation (sesame paste?) with the tofu, or it was made locally, or both, but this firm tofu was excellent. Sweet. Nutty. Salty. Fresh tasting and filling. The vegan menu here isn't just an "alternate version" of an omnivore dish. It is its own thing. DESSERT MISTAKE = not getting it. We thought there would be dessert in town, but we got out late. Town had closed. MUSIC Tonight's music was a pair of musicians playing CS&N, Neil Young, Bob Seger... acoustic session: Guitar, Violin, Mandolin. Quiet & sentimental performance was a perfect accompaniment to a long hike day. THERE ARE 1-STAR REVIEWS of this place. They have their reasons. I've only been here once. But I experienced NONE of the things they've mentioned. Moreover, we experienced even better than what other 5-star reviews suggested. This is an elegant spot, framed by a perfect day in Idyllwild. If I come back to the town, I will want to try other restaurants, but I'll definitely come back here. Not *just* because of their vegan options, but definitely *for* their vegan options.

We've been coming to Idyllwild for 60+ years (100 as a family) and we've seen restaurants great and small come and go. Tommy's right now is one of the top three, ironically as it is takeout dinners with the occasional holiday brunch. This Sunday on Memorial Day weekend we ordered the Roast Lamb special ($24), a robust herbed port wine jus three slices, which came with a dense square of scalloped potatoes au gratin, buttered peas and glazed carrots--with excellent broccoli cheddar soup with croutons--and a white dark chocolate mousse that was the perfect light dessert (I couldn't believe I ate it all). We're having leftovers for lunch or dinner today. What Tommy's gives is way over price value but it's his European culinary technique that elevates the food, even when doing crispy fried chicken with biscuits and gravy. The menu is set, one dish a day, though some occasionally come with vegetarian options. As a bonus, son James bakes excellent French bread--we bought a sun-dried tomato one which was terrific dipped in olive oil. Best of all, for us, Tommy's allows us to not fill the best hours of the evening with cooking and prep. We can sit out on our deck and enjoy the mountains. I'm a food writer among other things (finalist, Best Restaurant Feature, 2015, City & Regional Magazine Association) and author of The French House.

Ran across Tommy's Kitchen online and gave it a try. Tommy was very friendly online and we ordered for 4 a little late but he accommodated. Did not know what to expect as we had never ordered to reheat later. Luckily my camp grill can double as a simple oven. We were AMAZED at the food quality and taste. Days later I still find myself thinking of the food. Every item of this feast was beyond what we expected. The dessert was the finale. Anyone staying up there in a BnB or camping and have access to an oven should seriously consider ordering from them. Check out their website it only adds to the reasons to support them. Photos show the quality after heating. Missing is the best apple streudel (apfelstrufel with calvados vanilla sauce) I've ever eaten. Was too busy enjoying it to take a pic. Also missing is the awesome roasted cauliflower and butternut squash soup.

It's a GOLD mine! The service and friendliness is second to none! Delightful. I was just gonna try a couple of à la carte breakfast items to save money, BUT I was quickly "flipped" to a full meal package (much to my chagrin) and with tax and tip over $21! Well, that's a little pricey for a senior on a budget. I hate to say this, but when I'm traveling on a highway (and there's almost no alternative) Denny's does this right with their "senior menu" offerings at half this price! And that's kind of a grand slam. I make the same mistake frequently and I'm not even a big fan of eggs, but I didn't have much choice other than the veggie burger. I decided on scrambled eggs with hashbrowns and the veggie sausage from MorningStar brand (which origin is rooted in the vegetarian friendly Seventh-day Adventist Church.) My side dish was a generous portion of sliced avocado, nicely plated. To me, this spot was kind of like a "SYSCO" food depot. (If you know what I mean). The standard fair for many cafés. But, the service is very warm, old school charm where everybody chats with you to make sure you're doing OK and comes by and taps your shoulder or gives you a little back rub in passing. Not Harvey Weinstein weird but rather kind, friendly, vibes. I was transported to the set of "Andy of Mayberry" just wondering when Aunt Bea was gonna bring out the apple pie! Next time I'll try a veggie burger because it's a comfortable spot and the people are so damn friendly! Wait a second, is that Floyd the Barber, Goober the Mechanic, Otis on a bender? Oh no, I have to run! I see Barney giving me a ticket! Shazam, Shazam!

One of the reasons I keep coming back is the availability of private dining rooms that are conveniently located near the main dining area. If you're planning a group dinner meeting, just be aware that the sliding doors don't completely block out the noise from the dining room, so conversations may not be as secluded as you'd expect. That said, the food is consistently outstanding. The heirloom tomato salad is an absolute must-order. The crème fraîche dressing is incredible. Pro tip: save some bread to soak up every last bit of it. For the main course, the mesquite-smoked carne asada is exceptional. The meat is cooked perfectly, and the combination of pinto beans, ranchera sauce, and slightly sweet corn pudding creates a balanced and memorable dish. The portions are thoughtfully sized! Satisfying without leaving you feeling overly full. And whatever you do, don't skip dessert. They're all worth trying, but the macchiato cake is the standout and the perfect way to end the meal. Whether you're meeting clients, celebrating a special occasion, or simply enjoying a night out, Eight4Nine delivers excellent food, a welcoming atmosphere, and a dining experience that keeps me coming back.

A couple girls ordered the carne asada, and really enjoyed that as well. I'd say the biggest miss for our group was with the drinks. One gal ordered a vodka soda with lots of lemons. She recieved a literal glass of vodka, full, with a whole bottle of sparkling water on the side. This was so odd, but we're not the type to send things back so she went with it. Another lady ordered the manhattan and the server noticed immediately that it didn't look quite right, and had that fixed. It had come with an orange slice and no vermouth originally.
