This is the only sushi place on the mountain, so we came in with low expectations. The sushi itself was decent, but my wife's udon was extremely salty--and they added fish cakes to a vegetarian udon, which was disappointing. The avocado rolls also had old, blackened avocado. We waited for nearly an hour for an udon and two ramen - no exaggeration! Only to be served two instant ramen noodle packets in a bowl - no joke. The bill was almost 60$! Quaint Japanese restaurant at the mountains so we had to try it. Server was nice, service was fairly quick. We got some miso soups since it's a bit chilly tonight. I wanted a hot green tea but was told they don't serve them during summer. A lady next to us asked for hot water and got one so i was confused why i can't have a hot tea. We got iced tea instead which tasted really weird, i can't pin point what it was but definitely something else. I asked for lemon slices so i can place them in which didn't really mask the taste. We usually just order sashimis and nigiris when we eat at sushi spots back home in OC so that's what we did tonight. Fish was fresh and cut was thick so that's good. Although one variant of the fish was still too cold, kinda sad bc that was the best one - melted in your mouth once you eat it. The sushi rice was pretty hard though and didn't taste like sushi rice. I think it was mushroom but my husband thought it was pork. I got the chicken teriyaki bento box. It was tasty. We sat outside with our dog. They don't serve wine or beer here. Beef Yakisoba: 5 stars Very tender and deliciously seasoned beef sauteed in a skillet with crisp carrots, cabbage, onions and yakisoba noodles! Great depth of flavor, and just the right amount of seasoning. I would recommend this dish to anyone! The beef was so good - I'm still thinking about it! Yellowtail Handroll: 4 stars Good yellowtail! Good quality fish, yummy seasoning and good rice. Crispy nori on the outside, and a healthy portion for those of you wanting a little something more. I would order this dish again. Service could use a little more help. Our waiter seemed to be more occupied with to-go orders than those of us dining in, but all in all, not a bad place. GREAT SERVICE, BUT BLAND... it pains me to say this as the staff were absolutely wonderful. However, I have to be honest. I tried the edamame appetizers and they weren't a hit for me. Next, for the main course I had a order of veggie yakisoba w/ tofu and this also missed the mark big time. I didn't like that the noodles tasted store bought. Honestly I've had better maruchan noodles. The tofu was solid but it wasn't enough to save the dish. The fried fish looked good but I didn't get a chance to try it! I didn't feel like sushi this time around so I might give this place another shot, however it's going to be a while till I come back. As I'm writing this we are in the middle of the summer in Idyllwild and things are heating up. I was further disappointed that this place did NOT have AC, it was very steamy in there which made my visit a bit uncomfortable. Loved the cozy atmosphere of the place. We were there at a busy time and it took a while to get our food. As I think back on it now, our food came out one person at a time and not all at once. I wasn't expecting quick service because it is sushi, but after seeing how small the place was I was a little disappointed in how long it took. BUT when it did arrive, it was delicious. I loved their selection of rolls, many different than I've had at other places. There were a lot of choices, and it did take me a minute to find something to order because their was a lot of baked items, which to me is not sushi, nor is california roll-ish. Came here after a hike on a Saturday for lunch. Sat inside. Quaint little shop. Clean. Friendly service. It was full of Chinese and Japanese students from the Idyllwild Arts Academy. It was cute to hear the Japanese girls commenting to each other how their food tasted like home. However, we came for the spicy pork bulgogi and kimchi. Which was yummy. The server did not hesitate to give me more kimchi, which I loved. We also ordered a rainbow roll. The fish was super cold and as a result the flavor of the crab salad overpowered the flavor of the fish. Hence, minus one star. read more

My date and I went here in the Winter of 2024. We came late at night and were the only people in the restaurant for a good while. We got a miso soup because the night was cold and some rolls. The fish isn't stellar, but about as good as you can expect in the mountains away from the coast. I also suspect the late-at-night aspect to have made an impact there. The highlight of the experience, indisputably, was the owner. The owner is charming and hilarious, and I remember our conversation with him almost half a year later. We ate here yesterday and appreciated the signs that said things like "Real Sushi" (something to that effect). I was hoping that'd be the case, but many restaurants lately have big prices, and low quality - things like using cheap store-bought forms of the food they're purporting to be making from scratch, in-house. First the water came, and it tasted like dish soap or laundry detergent. I tried a few sips, hoping it was just my imagination, but it was clear. Toxic chemicals in our food and beverages are unacceptable, yet pretty common in restaurants. Cheap ones would be given a semi-free pass for this, but decent prices should weed out this type of thing. My rice, steamed in water of course, also faintly tasted like this detergent. My ramen was ok for what it was, but the noodles did seem like they could've been from a cheap instant ramen and used in a fancier bowl with more accouterments. All in all, this definitely meets the 2-star "Could've been better" rating. read more

A friend and I came here to visit from out of town and had a disappointing experience. For starters, the water tasted like tap water and almost like there was a residue of detergent in the cup. I got the salmon teriyaki bowl and it was very bland and I was still hungry after. There were some cabbage and carrots that tasted undercooked. There are few if any Asian dining options in Idyllwild, so we decided to try and satisfy our cravings by checking out IDY Sushi Rolls. The restaurant is located off of Highway 243 near the entrance to the main drag on N. Circle Drive. We visited during the lunch hour and service was friendly and attentive. I ordered the Combo Box which included chicken teriyaki, California rolls and veggie tempura and was served with steamed rice, miso soup and salad. The meal hit the spot for me. My wife ordered a few sushi rolls for herself and our daughter and unfortunately they were a miss. I guess you can't expect to have access to fresh fish when you're located so far from the ocean (see for yourself from my photos below). If you dine at IDY Sushi Rolls, I recommend sticking with their California rolls and cooked foods like their apps, noodles, fried rice and combo box options. read more

My boyfriend and I came here during our trip in Idyllwild and we were pretty disappointed. There was one really popular TikTok that stated it was the "best ramen they've ever had" and the reviews looked promising. We waited 45+ minutes for our food only for it to be instant Shin Ramen topped with chicken and sparse veggies, their Soon Tofu tasted like water and the rice was dry, and the Dragon Roll was just okay. Our total came to be $46 without tip. Donna, our waiter was expected to serve the entire restaurant alone and apparently the tip goes to the business and not the servers. I just can't fathom how instant ramen would take that long to cook and being so expensive for what it is. However, we understand that resources may be scarce up here and we appreciate the effort for even bringing this type of cuisine to Idyllwild. That does not change the fact that we were severely mislead by the reviews and I would not want others to experience the same. read more

We dropped in with my family of 5... it was a cold rainy day and we were craving sushi before our awesome stay in the cabins. I was a little worried as we showed up and there were no further tables available big enough for us. Thankfully a party of 2 took a smaller table so we can have the big table. I thought was very sweet. The ambience was nice with great music but.. the inside was a bit small and we couldn't really be too loud. I have 3 kids so I felt we had to be quieter. The food was great though and they provide cakes when you first arrive which was nice. The server was nice. Only thing I have to say was my youngest son is a bit picky, so I asked for a substitute for the topping, unfortunately they said no they can't. Worth a shot but just keep that in mind. Came to Idyllwild with a group of girlfriends for a really intentional weekend getaway. We were exploring the city and while at a tea shop, we met the owner and learned about the only sushi spot in town. The teashop owner told us that her and her boyfriend were pleasantly surprised when they discovered how great the sushi was because initially they were skeptical about mountain sushi. And thankfully, our reaction was the same! We also found out that the fish is actually sourced from LA. It definitely tastes like some pretty high quality sushi! We had such a great time, ordered a bunch of different rolls and tried a couple appetizers. Our taste buds were extremely satisfied. Would highly recommend coming here. read more

Rainy days call for a nice hot soup with soul. And we finally seem to have a great spot. I've been wanting to try this spot and all the rain and storm today made it the right day. We ordered a veggie and a chicken Ramen to go. I must say we were pleasantly surprised when we opened them at home. The broth is a medium spicy broth and made the soup very delicious. The noodle are soft tiny egg noodle and perfect for the ramen. The staff were very nice and friendly, as is the norm in our little town. I really enjoyed the veggies in the chicken bowl and the volcano roll was evenly cooked throughout providing for some consistent bites. The red ginger was a great palette cleanser but the wasabi was a bit flat.
