Damn! That's some tasty food!…read more Bored of the usual rotation of restaurants, I thought I'd head into Spring Valley and give this place a try. They serve Jamaican food / Caribbean. Website? Nope. A menu? Not really. So I just drove there, went inside and nobody was around. Be patient - it's very chill here. Eventually, the chef/owner, I'm assuming, pops his head out and was such a delight! Very friendly, offered tastings of everything and explained what he was serving that day. The menu, you see, is just written on a dry erase board and fresh food is cooked daily. If he runs out, that's it. Today's menu started with stewed chicken, BBQ chicken, oxtail, curry goat, curry chicken, jerk pork, jerk chicken, Mac and cheese, callaloo, ackee and cow foot soup. There are about 10 or so tables inside and even a bar. Most people here seem to get takeout. On the tables were bottles of Jamaican scotch bonnet pepper sauce for extra kick. I tasted a couple things before deciding on the oxtail, the jerk pork and the curry chicken. The jerk here is the real deal! The aroma, spices, juiciness and flavor of charcoal grilling. OMG. So good! They sell food in small, medium and large containers. I opted for entrees that come with rice and beans, plus sauteed cabbage. Everything was delicious, but that jerk was outstanding. Prices seemed fair for the portions and freshness of the food. There are no written prices, but just ask and he'll happily convey them to you. Tropical Delicacy is in a very small strip mall, but I'd say there's adequate parking. Definitely give this one a try. He's open for lunch too and often sells out of things already after lunch is over.

I would keep recommending this restaurant over almost all Caribbean restaurants. Very friendly staff always. The ambiance is well chilling. Also very cool and comfy seating area.

The service is always warm and professional, and the atmosphere makes every gathering even a quick work lunch feel special. I've been here also for Christian and ministry related events here, and everyone went above and beyond to accommodate everything we needed! Highly recommend Fabu for both dining and catering -- they truly serve with excellence and heart!

So I called…read moreahead to make sure they were open and able to accommodate us at around 7pm with their 9pm closing on a Sunday. The food is cooked fresh so we knew about the wait time and were fine with that (30 minutes for the red snapper -3 pounder!). The owner who was taking our order gave us a sample of the Legumes with beef to try while we decided on the menu items. It was delicious so we ordered that. She also told us which items they still had available (no curried items). In the end, we chose Legumes, Conch, Fried Red Snapper, Fried Pork, and Stewed Goat. These all came with a rice (choice of white, rice &beans or black rice) and 2 fried green plantains. She came with a huge bowl of fresh salad that had mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumbers and apples. The dressings were Caesar and Avocado Ranch. Everyone thought all the food was delicious and left so full -- we packed a bunch of rice, plantains and fish since we couldn't finish and wanted it for another meal. She also gave us extra hot pickled veggies (can't remember the name) for our take home stuff. All this was worth the wait for sure. So happy they're still open and in the area. We ended up finishing our meal after closing, but they didn't seem to mind. Such a lovely couple.

However, this is a hidden gem you should try. It appears to be a family owned restaurant. Decor is light and seating is sparse, so if you plan to bring a party of 4 or more I'd definitely suggest calling ahead to potentially make a reservation. We also came on an extremely hot day and sadly their A/C system wasn't working so it was on the warmer side. Not unbearable but a bit uncomfortable, so just keep that in mind if that's the case when you show up. What I will say when it comes to the experience and food is that it doesn't get more authentic than this. I asked for a recommendation and was told to order the griot, which was well seasoned and quite large portion size wise. The plate came with a rice of choice, two fried plantain, beans, pikliz and dipping sauce for the meat. Not bad for $20. I ordered to go because I had an event to go to, but can attest that they do a great job of plating their dishes when you dine in. If I'm ever in NYC again I wouldn't mind returning, dining in and hopefully trying something different like their Kalalou or legume which looks incredible.
