We were once really impressed that when we asked for a few soup samples, the cashier prepared them and included all the toppings (bacon, scallions, whatever) that the full soup would come with. "The accoutrements really make it," he said. Every soup that we've tried has been pretty delicious. I've ordered the miso soup which is the kind of core-warming thing you need sometimes. I've also had the beer and cheese soup which is thick and creamy. The wild mushroom wrap is definitely tasty though a little on the mushy side (not a huge surprise based on the ingredients). The Adam's apple has good flavor combinations. Note that the "half wraps" are miniature full wraps (I actually prefer this). I love that they source their rolls from ABC, my favorite bakery in town, although sometimes they forget to include the rolls... The food is overall very filling. The space has a cool vibe. It almost feels like part convenience store because they also have little snacks, build-your-own six packs of beer, bottles of wine, etc. I think this location is better than the other one, particularly in terms of customer service. I love the idea and the location was really adorable. The food was good too, but I docked stars because it's a bit confusing (at least for me) to figure out what the heck was going on. The ordering area was packed with people and that's where a lot of the confusion came from. The second thing was seating--or the complete lack thereof. I was actually thinking to myself, "What's the maximum number of people that can be crammed in here before it's an utter fire hazard?" I had to awkwardly loiter waiting for a seat which did eventually come available within a not so unreasonable amount of time. The sandwich I had--which I've sadly forgotten the name of, was tasty. The beer I had was even more tasty. Overall, not mindblowing or anything. If you're in the area, I'd suggest stopping by. But, if it's a riot inside, I would say don't be too upset and find a new place nearby. read more

This place was great! The lamb curry was absolutely amazing. Really more a bowl of rice with lentils/lamb in curry poured over top of it than soup, which is actually awesome in my opinion. It was very flavorful, just as good as lamb curry I've had at some Indian places. The spinach/mushroom/black bean wrap that accompanied my sandwich was also very awesome. I was surprised at how much healthful food I got for the price! I came away full. Also, bonus points for Coke products in the fountain machine. Minus one star for a really cramped atmosphere with too many tiny tables crammed in an already tiny space. This place came recommended even before I stepped foot in Charlottesville so I'll admit that my expectations may have been pegged a little too high. Place is no-fuss no-frills, but tons of comfy seating, natural light, some bluegrassy music playing in the back, and paper plates and cups. There were about a thousand things I was dying to try, but they had run out of the peanut tofu soup so I settled for the tomato basil bisque, topped with olive oil-soaked croutons which was incandescent. You've got to time it properly so that the croutons don't get overly soggery and still retain some of their original crunch. The Adam's Apple and croque monsieur looked good but I wanted something a little heftier after a three-hour final, so I ordered the 90s Club, stacked with chicken, cheddar, avocado, and other good stuff. Suffice to say that after getting home, I didn't really move from my one spot all afternoon. This place isn't exactly cheap, and I'm usually skeptical of places that shout "LOCALLY SOURCED! ORGANIC" from the rooftops and use it as a basis for jacking up their prices, because no one ever cares to verify and I'm a mean old cynic. But there's a ton of choices here for everyone, and it's clearly a dearly beloved place, so four stars it is. read more

A group of us came over for a late lunch on a recommendation from a friend and we were happy with what we found. A non-descript door along a random road through a ped mall leads into this gem. The decor is nothing to write home about, but that's not why you're here right! The menu boasted a dozen or so soups, a few of which they were out of by 3 when we showed up. The lamb curry was solid, not incredibly, but worth having. A friend had the Spicy Senegalese Peanut Tofu and it too was good. Both were different from what I've tried previously and had excellent flavor. The bread that came with the soup was a nice touch, but the real winner here was the beer selection. They had 30+ varieties in the cooler, ranging from hoppy IPAs to some good stouts. It made for a good 20 minute lunch stop and the set up is very condusive to conversation, which was nice. Overall, a pretty legit little gem in downtown Charlottesville. Worth checking out and a place that would be a lot of fun to get to know if you're in the area or if you travel there frequently. read more

First off, this place is CROWDED. It must be a fire hazard. You can't push past the other diners without feeling like you are going to dump your tray on them. Your chair will be back against your neighbor and you can't move. Very uncomfortable. The ambiance is shabby. The food selection is good; however the taste is bland. You would think that soup would be their signature dish, but my 3 Sisters Soup was nothing special. The turkey wrap was overpowered by goat cheese- and I like goat cheese. The cup of soup, half a wrap and a drink was $10. The line was long, but moved fast. Service was unremarkable. Food in Charlottesville tends to be overrated and bland. If that is what you are used to, this place fits right in. If you are accustomed to higher quality of food and service, you will be disappointed. read more

We had just arrived in Charlottesville after visiting Barboursville Vineyards, and this was one of the first places we saw as it was right down the street from our B&B. It was about 2pm on a Friday afternoon, and after a quick check on Yelp showed Rev Soup as highly rated, we decided soup, sandwiches, and salads sounded perfect for a late lunch. Located in a basement, décor is minimal and basic, but that's not why you come here; you come for the made from scratch soup, local produce, and handcrafted sandwiches! There is an emphasis on vegan and vegetarian, with these items being clearly marked, as are gluten free and dairy free items. The menu is fairly large and changing frequently to include specials. As most fast casual sandwich shops offer, Rev Soup had a combo deal-any combination of a cup of soup, half a salad, or half a sandwich plus a drink. I wish there was the option of either upcharging to a beer (they have a small cooler of options) or lowering the price to exclude the drink altogether. Both my boyfriend and I opted for the combo; he chose a cup of lamb curry and half of Adam's Apple while I chose the same sandwich but paired with a baby spinach salad. One thing to note, not all sandwiches are available for the combo and any half sandwich comes as a wrap. The "half wrap" seemed to be the size of a regular wrap at most places so the portion size was quite large. The Adam's Apple consisted of turkey, bacon, chevre, arugula, garlic aioli, sliced apples and house made apple butter. This was a great combination of flavors and textures-sweet, creamy, crunchy! All of the ingredients were fresh-this was a killer wrap! The baby spinach salad was also delicious-spinach, goat cheese, toasted almonds, red raspberries, and balsamic vinaigrette. Portions of both the raspberries and goat cheese were quite generous! While I did not do more than sample my boyfriend's lamb curry, I can say from the few bites I had that it certainly rivaled curries I have had from Indian restaurants. Potatoes, lentils, and spinach were abundant throughout and the cup of curry was beautifully garnished with a yogurt swirl, cilantro, and scallions. Last month, I had the pleasure of working near the mall for the day, and I knew right away where I wanted to go to lunch. I even convinced another co-worker to join me there. We arrived shortly before one, and the place was packed with a huge line. If you head there around lunchtime, plan a little extra time because we were there a while even though we got our food to go. Their menu is displayed above the counter where you order, so you can change your mind about what you want to order a million times while you're waiting. They have a combo, which is around $10 and comes with a fountain drink. I got the Spicy Senegalese Peanut Tofu soup and the Thai wrap with tofu. I grabbed my drink, and the ice had some questionable flecks in it...maybe it's time to clean that thing. It seemed to take a really, really long time for my order to come out. When I went up to the counter to check on it, it turned out that someone misplaced my ticket, so they hadn't made my sandwich. Now for the food! The soup was absolutely amazing! It was served at the right temperature, even though I got it to go, and was super flavorful! It was exactly what I was expecting, and I really enjoyed it. The Thai wrap on the other hand was pretty disappointing. It could have used a little bit more "Thai" thrown in because it was somewhat bland. All in all, I had a good experience at Rev Soup. I would definitely go back for the soup, but I'd try a different sandwich next time. read more

My review would be more appropriate as a 3.5 but I'll round up because I like the poetry on the walls of this establishment! This place is super hipster, as I'm sure you can imagine by the restaurant title. The prices are pretty high for the quality of the food but I only ate here once so maybe some of the other menu items are better. I tried the miso soup and it just wasn't all that great. It was pretty watery and didn't taste much like any other miso soup I have had. I would certainly never order it again. I also tried the Turkey Bacon Club and it was super tasty. Sadly, it was pretty small. Overall, I left Revolutionary Soup still feeling pretty hungry. (Thank God for Insomnia Cookies around the corner!) The space itself is small and a little dark. It is very trendy and you can write poems and hang them up on a bulletin board in the restaurant. They do have a little shelf of wines and craft beers that looked pretty interesting. If I were to come back, I'd be sure to check those out but since I'm not frequently in the area, I'm not sure this is somewhere I'll be racing to return to. My friends mostly liked their foods and one of the girls got a salad that looked really tasty and had a much better portion than the rest of us. Maybe I'll go that route next time. read more

I always get the same thing when we go here, the creamy rosemary potato soup and the adam's apple sandwich, because they are AMAZING, and pair so well together. This place makes great food. I just wish they were a little more affordable... But you can tell the ingredients and recipes are great quality, so I'm not surprised they cost a little more. As a new found vegetarian on the path to veganism, I found this place thanks to Yelp! on a spontaneous trip to C-ville from RVA. Boy am I glad I found this one! The soups were clearly marked w/ fresh ingredients, a cozy atmosphere, and a quick moving line as even though it was the height of the lunch rush. We ordered the potato soup and corn and crab chowder along with the Lisa Quesadilla and a chicken pesto wrap. ALL of it was delectable and it was SO very filling. Everything came out so fresh and so delicious, we scarfed it down as quick as it arrived. I think in total for 2 sandwhiches, 2 soups, 2 drinks was around $38-ish which is a bit on the high end (hence the docked star), but I'd much rather pay this twice (maybe not) for the top notch service and quality of this place! What a gem of a place just off the mall! Sort of hidden and small, I recommend getting there early to beat the crowds and line and make sure the best soups aren't sold out but I promise they are worth it. The crab and corn chowder I had the other day was absolutely incredible and my husband had a spicy chicken soup that I wish i remembered the name of but it was also good! I got a sandwich and even though it was good, it was way too much for me so next time i'll just stick with soup only. I can't wait to go back now that it's getting chilly! read more

I checked out Revolutionary Soup last week with 11 middle-schoolers in tow. We were on a field trip, and I had never tried this downtown mall location, so I signed up to take students there. Maybe being with middle-schoolers tainted my experience just a bit, but overall, the experience, even at busy lunchtime on a weekday, was great! The place is small with a hip vibe and not a whole lot of seating. Still, we all found a seat and it seems that people cycle through pretty quickly here, not taking up seats for too long. I was worried that in such a small place there wouldn't be enough seating for all 12, but it worked out just fine! Next, to the line. This was the only unfortunate part of the trip. It really seemed as if the girl behind the register was purposely taking her time. This isn't true, I'm sure, but why would there only be one person taking orders at a busy lunchtime? The line that we were in, which didn't seem long, took probably 40 minutes for everyone to cycle through and get their food. This seemed a bit ridiculous. However, the food was fantastic and the employees were happy to help me out with to go bags and boxes for the kids that couldn't finish their lunch in the 10 minutes we had left for lunch after waiting and getting the food. I ended up getting the Lisa Quesadilla which was amazing and HUGE! I was able to eat it for dinner as well. I didn't get to try the soup yet, but I'll be back for more! Overall, this is a great lunch spot, but prepare to wait if you come during busy hours! read more

I've eaten here a few times in the past and most recently ate here for lunch twice last week. All the servers/cashiers are always friendly and welcoming. If you're not sure about a particular soup or can't make up your mind, they are more than happy to offer you a taste. Their Hungarian Mushroom Dill is phenomenal. I can't wait to get it again. I also had their Three Sisters which is a hearty vegetarian soup with beans, chunks of tomatoes and perfectly seasoned. Their simple yet delicious Grilled Cheese sandwich goes great with any of their soups. A fresh roll is included with every soup purchase. Their corn muffins are not to be missed! They have a lot of sandwich and wrap options as well which I look forward to trying soon. There is plenty of indoor seating and this place is right off the downtown mall which makes it perfect if you want to go for a stroll before or after. The soup prices are on the higher side, my 12oz cups ran me more than $6.00 each, but if I'm gonna splurge, this is where I'm going. I would recommend going for lunch rather than dinner. The food tastes fresher and it's better staffed during lunch so you don't have to deal with things like empty napkin holders and no paper towels in the bathroom. read more

Rev Soup is a locally owned restaurant with two cozy locations, one downtown and the other on UVA's The Corner. Their soup selection rotates and they have a pretty big selection of sandwiches and wraps. Staff is usually friendly and the downtown location has a charming basement deli feel that is popular with nearby businesses' employees for their lunch breaks. Every single time I bus my table I can't help but wish they used something other than their disposable cups, plates, and silverware and/or collected food waste for compost.... Hopefully soon Rev Soup can step their game up and become a leader in our environmentally conscious town! read more

FIVE STARS and OH-SO-WORTHY of my THREE-HUNDREDTH (!!) review on Ye Old Yelp!! =D Had dinner this evening with a group of friends and immediately enjoyed the ambiance when stepping inside. Very no-nonsense and casual, from the plain tables and chairs to the soda machine and the printed-out sheets of paper that indicated menu items. But, the simplicity ends there. The combinations of ingredients for the entree choices just...flow. From salads, soups, wraps and sandwiches, this is a locale that just about everything sounds amazing, so it would have been hard to choose if I hadn't previewed the meal online beforehand. For this visit (the first of many to come, I am sure) I went with the highly recommended Spicy Peanut soup and the Roquefort (spinach, cranberries, bleu cheese and candied walnuts with balsamic vinaigrette!!) side salad - OH YUM! I also liked that they had a wide selection of beverages - I went with an HonesTea SubLime Mate - MMMM! Perfect! I think the prices are very reasonable for the portions and quality of ingredients. I had the Spicy Peanut Tofu soup and I just thought it was okay - nothing great. The Adam's Apple wrap was delicious, although be aware that if you order a half portion it will be served in a wrap. I missed that and was a little confused. That flub was on me though. What really ruined the meal for us was that one member of my party is highly allergic to gluten so she ordered a salad which was denoted to be gluten free. The salad was the only thing that she had eaten. Fast forward a few hours and what is she having? An allergic reaction to gluten. If something is going to be advertised as gluten free, please take case to ensure that cross contamination is at a minimum. Although my food was okay and I wouldn't mind trying a few different types of sandwiches, I will not return. I don't really fancy paying ten dollars for a sour hipster attitude and food poisoning. read more

Oh, Rev Soup. How much do I wish you were in Richmond? A lot much. I have been a fan of the no-frills vibe and creative cuisine since I stumbled upon this spot a few years back. Of course, as the name would suggest, they do offer quite a few soup options. However, they are way more than just liquid meals. The menu boasts a variety of sandwiches and salads, too. On Saturday, the bf and I popped in for a late lunch after scouting potential wedding venues and I was thrilled to order a BLT with veggie bacon. A place that serves vegetarian meat always gets a cold star from me, especially when that meat is super tasty. The "bacon" was super crispy, just like I like it, and it was wrapped up in a flour tortilla with lettuce and tomato... no craziness added, just classic and satisfying. The bf got the Adam's Apple, which I've had in the past (sans the meat) and absolutely loved. The normal version is turkey, bacon, chevre, arugula, garlic aioli, apples, and apple butter on sunflower bread... but like any vegetarian knows, most places will make an item without the meat as long as it's not pre-made or integral to the dish. We both scarfed our sammies, while sitting in the casual below-street level dining room and admiring the sweet photos and art on the walls. Rev Soup is the go-to lunch place downtown. I can always count on them for a healthy and delicious meal to take back to work with me. It's hard to pick a favorite but here are a few - the tomato basil soup is a standby that is pretty much always available, there's a rotating selection of soups (also gazpachos in the Summer) that you can't go wrong with. As for sandwiches - the turkey bacon club, Adam's apple, or local grilled tofu are my favorites, especially when made as a wrap. The saño sabor grain bowl is delicious (think Chipotle's dressing but way better) and the piadinas (Italian flatbreads) are bomb. Like I said, you really can't go wrong. Rev Soup is also perfect for a take away dinner for those nights when there no time to cook. read more
