Hungry for something but not quite knowing what, I drove from downtown to midtown and back with nothing jumping out at me until I drove right passed Rice Paper on 7th. It was pretty late on a Monday and I was feeling a little bad for stopping in for pho with little more than an hour until close. However, Jimmy (or was it Jim) the bartender was so awesome and in high spirts that my dread of being there late faded quickly. I had pho ga and it was delicious! The small serving sir is plenty for one. I wish I had room for a spring roll because they looked amazing. This spot also has a pretty good happy hour, or hour rather. With all the different specials throughout the week and weekend, people can find a great deal on some killer Vietnamese food! I am very confused at why this place has such reviews. We were surprised that the fresh rolls only come with one roll. Then the bahn mi just blew us away. We hadn't visited Rice Paper in awhile mostly because it tends to be expensive. Last night was a good example of a meh experience. First of all, the floor next to the bar is torn up. There must be a plumbing problem. The air smelled dampish and there were boards covering the hole with bright orange cones. Edamame was around $10. This review is based on my first visit here today. Came across this place on way to airport, so didn't want to eat too much. My husband and I both got pho, which, at the time of this writing, is 1/2 off on Sat and Sunday. I got the filet mignon pho and he got the house special pho in the small size. It is decent. Ingredients tasted fresh. Nice decor, modern and upscale compared to many other pho places ( which is unfortunate). Small space but have nice outdoor seating. I am a little frustrated that they choose to use fake plants and greenery and not use their window garden to grow fresh herbs like mints and basils and a lemon tree, especially because you can do that here year round. But, I digress. Will have to try their spring rolls next time since it seems like that's what they proclaim to be their specialty. Also, I am taking away 1 star for lack of variety. read more

The restaurant has both patio & indoor seating and the waitstaff are friendly and quick. The food is amazing! We started with the fire cracker shrimp & crispy tofu. I'm so glad I was introduced to this spot. I drive past it so very often and had never thought to venture inside. I've been here quite a bit now and always sit at the bar. It's a quaint little place with a very warm ambience that makes somewhat romantic. There's bar seating, indoor tables as well as an outside patio that has fire heating this time of year. The staff is so accommodating and welcoming they make you feel right at home. The conversations are great and fun and funny. Since I'm a bar kind of girl, I always have conversations with the bartender and he remembers my favourite wine as well as the last meals I've had no matter who I'm there with. I definitely have my favourites, so here are my suggestions: Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc, Filet mignon fresh land spring rolls and the Shaking beef. Either metal chairs, metal stools or a row of padded bench that sinks so low you feel like a small child at a tall table and are very hard to get up from if you have knee or back issues (the tabletop came to the tops of my breasts when sitting on the padded bench) The server never came back to ask if I wanted a refill on my soda or to ask how the food was (as He brought the check he asked how I liked it), even though soda was almost empty through 1/2 the meal. I ate here 2 days in a row. Yes, it's that good. Now that I'm back home in Vegas and I find myself still thinking about this place, I can admit to myself this is the best Bo Luc Lac (Shaken Beef) I've ever had from what I can remember over the past 4 decades eating this dish hundreds of different places, from hundreds of different chefs (including my Vietnamese grandma, aunts and cousins) who all think they have the best version. 100% fate brought me to this place. I rarely leave town, but the BF needed laser spine surgery so we were staying in Scottsdale, 40 mins away, smack in middle of busy Phoenix Open. Their MRI machine wasn't working (which never ever happens) so they sent us to a place down the street from this restaurant. I was craving Pho noodle soup to calm my stress so we found this place on Yelp. I almost missed the entrance to turn in for parking which loops you around to the back. Plenty of space to park. We were first to arrive. We were greeted upon entry and seated immediately. Very friendly and helpful staff. Both times we went, I noticed several tables of single diners and regulars... that's a sure sign of good food! On my first visit because my heart was set on Pho, that's what I ordered. Fortunately, the BF decided on the Bo Luc Lac because he felt like steak. Thank God! Otherwise I wouldn't have discovered this. And since this place is named Rice Paper, I placed an order of their Traditional spring roll to try. Spring rolls came out. We each had one. It was good. My Pho noodle soup came out. Fresh mints and bean sprouts. Added my usual hoisin and sriracha sauce with quick squeeze of lime. Ah, yes! I'm about to dive in and then.... the BF's sizzling plate of the most fragrant shaken filet beef you'll find, with chunks of onions (just the way I love them and closest to my late grandma's as anyone ever has) and the sauce definitely had some fish sauce in it and they weren't shy to use it. Love it!! I made the mistake of trying a piece before I really got into my Pho, because after that it's REALLY hard to go back. So we decided to return the following day and BOTH have our own sizzling Shaking Beef as BF calls it. He also ordered a side of Garlic Noodles as that is my fave simple dish that I only order from one place back at home. Let me tell you, it was good. Good enough that we ordered 4 takeout orders for dinner later at hotel... yes, good enough that we are okay with bringing 4 orders of GARLIC noodles 40 minute drive back into our little hotel room where there is a full menu, fine dining restaurant in the lobby, steps from our room. Hope this advice is good enough for you all to try the sizzling Shaking Beef aka Bo Luc Lac and garlic noodles if you haven't already. Luckily for you guys, you're nearby the restaurant. I happened to come here during happy hour and had the place mostly to myself. The setting is modern, fun to look around at, and relaxing. The chicken cha gio (which many places don't offer) were perfectly crispy and delicious. I had classic Pho tai. The meat was sliced perfectly thin, the portion was generous, and the broth was smooth. We were really excited about the menu of Rice Paper since there were many very delicious sounding items. We ended up ordering the Large Fillet Mignon Pho, spring roll with shrimp and lobster, firecracker shrimp and garlic butter chicken wings. First we ordered take out and all 4 items were in one bag. This caused the container of hot pho broth to pop open and start spilling into the bag with the remaining food items and into my car. It would have been way easier to take home if the pho broth was contained separately. Secondly, we did order the garlic butter chicken wings, but received the soy glazed type sauce instead, so we were slightly disappointed with that as well. In all the wings that we did receive were tasty and the flavor was very interesting. Third, we were not able to finish our spring roll as the lobster had a very strong fish smell, which is not common for fresh lobster. With how fishy it smelled we were not comfortable finishing the spring roll. Onto some of the highlights of our meal. The firecracker shrimp were delicious! We ordered the sauce on the side, since it was a to-go order and the shrimp were extremely crispy and the firecracker sauce was so good, slightly sweet with a subtly strong spice at the end. I kept going back for more of the firecracker shrimp. Also, the fillet mignon pho was also very delicious! The beef was extremely tender and there was plenty for the whole bowl.
