The pho was just okay. Da Vang was highly recommended by the Reddit gods so my friend and I thought we would give it a try since we were in the area. We were seated immediately when we came in around 12 PM on a Friday and got our food shortly after so the service was pretty good! We ordered the pho ga and pho tai. I asked for the pho ga with beef broth instead of chicken broth but they gave me chicken broth anyway. The broth was a bit oily and on the lighter side. The flavor wasn't super deep or fragrant. They did give a generous portion of meat but the noodle texture was kind of mushy. My friend said the same about her pho tai but she liked the egg rolls. My grilled pork was more like a Filipino longanisa sausage (minus casings) in texture, fatty and sweet (different to what we get in Toronto and not to my personal taste). I haven't been to this restaurant in over 20 years. Since moving to Phoenix, I have been wanting to go back to my old stomping grounds but haven't been able to come on a weekend (always very packed). I happen to be in the neighborhood a couple weekends ago and stopped in. This was the original and First Vietnamese restaurant in Phoenix back in 1985. The restaurant is very basic inside, has two seating areas when you walk in there's a register and a host stand. The prices are seemingly similar to the restaurants in the area and I was glad to see that they weren't charging $6 to $7 dollars for two spring rolls, which is always a good sign. I scoped the room of other patrons and families eating, I did notice the portions of the food were good and everyone seemed be enjoying themselves. I appreciated that the Pho broth was clear both rather than a dark broth, and it was not oily as some other reviewers have noted. The pho broth seemed to be missing an ingredient possibly anise star or cinnamon. It was good but not the best I've had. The food overall was tasty, the staff was nice and friendly. The service was quick. And they seem to be a little more attentive than most service workers in Vietnamese restaurants. I also got the "three-colored" dessert. Everything was flavorful, well-prepared, and reasonably priced. Service was efficient, though our server coughed quite a bit. While he was wearing a face mask, it only covered his chin--not his mouth--so I'm not really sure what purpose it served. There's not much in terms of décor, but we come here for the food. I've heard so many great things about Da Vang over the years and when I was finally in the area this week I had to stop in for lunch. The parking lot is small, but it was worth waiting for a spot. The broth was amazing and plenty of steak and meatball in our soup. Noodles were the perfect amount. Our friend that was with us had never had pho and loved it. The location is in a small, much older and unassuming lot. It would be easily missed if you didn't know it was there. Do yourself a favor though and come check them out. My only semi negative comment if that is that we sat quite a while at our table when we were done not knowing if we had to wait for a server to give us the bill or pay at the front. We got #1 and #13 this time, #1 Pho is absolutely delicious, loaded sliced beef, a couple meatballs and trips and stomach slices. #13 is one of kind pork internal organs soup. We haven't been here in a while since we live a bit further away but oh my we missed DaVang. Such comfort food. We can't find more authentic pho anywhere in AZ.
