I really enjoyed the Rice Thai Cafe! The food we ordered was all delicious, especially the crab rangoons which I tend to be picky about. They were very accommodating with us having our dog there for the outside seating. They even brought her out a water bowl and did not get upset if she came up to the for pets. I've tried Rice Thai Cafe before - maybe 3 times, and in the past I would have given them 1 or 2 stars, but I went yesterday, and it wasn't as bad as the last time. The service was friendly enough, and the food was prepared very fast (maybe too fast?). I got the Tom Yum Soup with Tofu, which I believe was pretty tasty, with a lot of tofu. But, it was so spicy that I couldn't really take in any subtleties of flavors, and I think it was a bit lacking on vegetables. I also got Chicken Pad See Eiw, which tasted good, but, but was a little too wet, and a little lacking on chicken & veggies. Not bad. But, not amazing. Again, I've been here a few times before, and I think this was the best food they've made for me. I thought - "Hmmmm, maybe they got a new cook over there??". So, in the end, I suppose it was decent, but definitely not the best Thai food in Chicago. I would highly recommend Star of Siam or Joy's. But, Rice Thai can work in a pinch. 2.5 stars for the food, and .5 star extra because it's across the street from my home. Enjoy! read more

Ownership appears to have changed again. The waitresses I have seen are new and one of them (an elegantly dressed, young, thin asian woman) mentioned that she is the new owner. The new owner gives good service and seems very nice and approachable. I'm not sure if the chefs are the same or if they have changed. In the past, I would go and always get a consistently delicious plate. This has continued for the most part but I went yesterday and noticed that their Pad See Eiw tasted alittle different, as if a new chef had cooked it. It was not bad but it was less delicious than before. I still think this place is good but I think that when the ownership changes, the quality and the character of the establishment can also change.... for me, its too soon to say if its changed for better or for worse. I was really enjoying their food but the customer service is rude af. Like I'm a college student so I can barely afford anything but I decided to try thai food for the first time. It was pretty good to be honest but when I didnt leave a tip (because I didnt get my paycheck yet) the owner came back telling me that I forgot to give a tip. She went in the back and started complaining with words including "zero" "nothing" "tip" "ridiculous". It's not a fancy sitdown restaurant, but if you like small family restaurants with good food at a great value, check it out. It's so unassuming outside you would miss it driving by on Sheridan. I've had pad Thai a couple of times, and it's always prompt and hot--I'm picky about my tofu, but I love the way they prepare it. Good peanut and egg distribution too and generous portions without being wasteful. Typically I will not finish in one sitting...but then change my mind and finish. It's not a two-meals-from one-entree type place, but that's good business in my opinion. Very friendly shopkeepers, and especially fresh vegetables for a place of this size. We were out and about recently and decided to get some takeout (you can dine it, they have a few tables and chairs: very small dining room, nothing special). We were pleasantly surprised. It was cooked to order (I despise having food sitting around: I'd rather wait and have it freshly prepared) and did not take long. He had the chicken pad thai and I had the basil chicken. We both enjoyed our meals very much. Again...much more than we thought we would! I wish the spicy sauce was a little bit MORE spicy, but otherwise it was flavorful. The portion size was good and the prices were reasonable. My boyfriend stopped by a second time days later, ordered the chicken pad thai again and said it was consistent: just as good as the first time. Although the menu isn't extensive, and their isn't a lot of room inside to sit down and eat with more than a couple of people, this is my favorite Thai restaurant in Rogers Park. A few months back, I think they changed chefs, which caused the quality of the food to go down, but I think they've switched back recently and everything is just as good as it was before. Stopped in for some quick Pad See Eew (my usual Thai comparison dish), and it was mediocre at best. Service was very quick, from order to out the door in about 5 minutes, but the ambiance and food quality left a lot to desire. The restaurant itself is very small, only seating for a handful of couples. You would never fit a large group in there. Noise from the kitchen permeates the dining area, giving it the feeling as if they don't want you to stay and be comfortable. This firmly cements the restaurant's role as a takeout joint. Ingredients were fast-food quality, with the Pad See Eew relying solely on soy sauce without any additional spicing. Vegetables were comparable to quick chinese places such as Panda Express, probably frozen. All in all it is great for its speed and if you want something Thai on the go, but never think of the restaurant as more than fast food. read more

This place is super small! It's a hole in the wall between the 400 Theater and Starbucks. But their food is superb (for what you're paying for it-- nearly nothing!) The best experience I ever had here was after a long first day of my internship. The man smiled and greeted me to Rice Thai Cafe (gotta love the name!) He asked if I wanted a glass of water and told me I could sit down and take my time looking over the menu (Even though I was planning on take-out). I chose the pad see ew and waited a mere eight minutes (I was starving since I hadn't eaten all day) and received a warm take out bag with a smiley face on it. I came back to my apartment to a large helping (it could probably feed two people, but I ate it all because it turned out to be delicious!!!!!) Obviously I wouldn't come to this place with a large group. But I definitely would consider it if you're in the Roger's Park neighborhood (it's not really "worth" the trip from another part of the city), low on cash (poor college students unite!), and looking for some good Thai food to stick to your ribs. read more

BBQ pork fried rice was just okay. Sliced pork was very dry, like leather, I threw most of it out. Flavor was okay, nothing special.

We order from Rice Thai at least once a week. The veggies are always fresh, which we love. We particularly enjoy their ginger chicken and cashew chicken which I always get with tofu as I am vegetarian. I love that they offer brown rice. The service is wonderful, and the prices can't be beat. If you get a chance, try their seasonal sticky rice with mango. Yum! read more

Oh man! I have eaten here at least 2 or 3 times and I can't believe I haven't written a review yet. I LOVE crab Rangoon (like, LOVE) and I have always been so happy with the ones from here. I have also had sushi (although I unhelpfully can't recall exactly which kinds) which was also extremely delicious. Additionally, the owner is always warm, kind, friendly, and attentive. Come here when you miss having your mom make you a nice warm meal. An older Thai couple, whom King Bhumibol would be proud to call his people, greet and serve you like you're their favorite grandchild. After spending some time in Thailand (yes, look at me, quite the globetrotter), I found you can't get Thai food in the US. Thais know Americans are gluttons and like our food covered in thick, syrupy shit and can't handle spice. Touche, Thai-restaurateurs, this is true. But anyways, Rice Thai does a very good job on traditional, 30-baht-but-my-plate-might-not-be-clean Thai Fried Rice. They also have delicious sticky rice (not too coconuty or hard) and pretty good Basil Chicken. This is not fancy; this reminds me of sketchy, cheap Thai places in Thailand. Or, almost. Go to Chang Mai to get great Thai food. For less hassle, go to Rice Thai for good thai fried rice and a fuzzy feeling inside. read more

Great biz, the owners are very nice, the food is flavorful and freshly made before your eyes :-) My one complaint is that the noodle dishes lack enough vegetables but at least they are fresh and not a frozen veggie mix like some places. This is our go to cheap takeout place!! Their Tom kha soup is my favorite, and if you ask they can make it vegetarian (veggie broth instead of chicken). The pad see ew is also really good. Very small venue but man the food makes up for it. I think I found my fav neighborhood thai place. Its run by a cute husband and wife who really makes you feel like you're at home.
