This place is located at a very cool place called the York. The dish I had was a rice bowl with smoked tofu and all the veggie bombs with a medium sauce. I really enjoyed the smoked tofu flavor and it had a nice amount of veggies and it tasted great. The portion was big enough that my wife and I split the bowl and were both satisfied. The service was quick and easy just step up to the ordering counter and let them know what you want. The person taking the order was very friendly and helpful to answer any questions we had. The food came out pretty quick too. Even though there were a few orders ahead of us we got our order very quickly. As I said earlier this place is located in the York and it has a very cool and relaxing atmosphere. If you want to enjoy the day you can sit outside on the patio which has many shaded areas to sit if you don't feel like being indoors. My only advice would be to be weary of parking because due to the Yorks popularity parking can be tight.

This Ricewood location is inside York, one of my favorite cafes in Ann Arbor. As with York, I appreciate the outdoor seating area. I've only tried the pork belly, which is solid, but I'm not a fan of sauce that is drizzled on top. Next time, I will ask that no sauce be added to my meat. I think the rice bowls are overpriced for the amount of meat provided, which is why the second time I visited, I ordered only meat by the pound. I am seconding what another Yelper recommended: skip the rice bowl. I'd say just order the meat, take it home, and prepare your own rice and vegetables.

Wow, twice in one trip! We enjoyed our first visit to Ricewood so much, we planned another meal there before we left for AZ. First visit was a Sunday lunch, they were out of almost everything. I enjoyed the tofu bowl, while the rest of my party all had burgers. On the second trip we all ordered brisket bowls. The rice base is seasoned and includes small chopped scallions and tomatoes, but for veggies there is a choice of slaw, pickles, etc in the bowl. The brisket was huge nearly slabs, very little waste and super tender. The bark is a salty spicy Asian seasoning and so unique! What a great value, portion and quality for a walk up shared seating kind of venue. Very crowded at peak times, but don't let that or their limited parking deter your from trying it!

I was recommended to come here by a coworker. Didn't think much of it until I looked up and read the high ranked reviews. So I decided to finally swing by this place for lunch. I did have a confusing time finding where this place was. There was no parking in the front, so I drove to the back of the building and that's where I saw the entrance and the giant grill. Luckily that's where I found parking as well. I walked in the building and took a look around as I searched for ricewood. The ordering window was located in the front of the building, of course. Service was amazing. The guys were so cool and down to earth. I couldn't decide between the pork belly and brisket bowl, so I got both with the cucumbers and cabbage. I waited no more than 10 minutes before my food was ready. I tried the pork belly first. It was decent. I then tried the brisket and my whole body melted to the floor. Hands down, that has to be some of the best brisket I've ever tasted. I couldn't stop eating it! It was beyond delicious! And when you eat all the ingredients together in one bite, it's like heaven in your mouth. I only planned on eating half the bowl for lunch and the other half for dinner. That plan went straight out the window! It was just too good! I'm very impressed with the flavor profile of this establishment. I'm confident I'll be returning for more of this outrageously scrumptious brisket!

This is a good/bad review. I'll break this into a few parts. Meat: Let's start with the star of the show... the meat. Brisket was the best I've ever had. So frickin delicious. I also ordered a 4 ribs which also tasted great. Zero complaints about the meat. Rice: The rice was also great and had some fresh scallions and I added on Sesame Cucumbers. Sauce: I think where it went a little south for me was the sauce they put on the rice. It had a strong taste that over powered the rice and topping. I would have probably requested that on the side in the future. It was the medium sauce (which was more of a 8 of 10 than a 5 of 10). I was warned that the hot was super hot... I should have probably went with the mild. Not sure if the hot/medium/mild taste any different but for me the medium was not to my liking. Don't want to get anyone confused with the bbq sauce which was super flavorful. The service was fast and super friendly. This is from the Packard St. Located in a mini food mall on. Their window is at the very front of the building. There is also a full service bar and wine bar located in same place (not part of Ricewood) so you can always grab a beer or cocktail to go with the your meal. I would definitely go back but skip the rice bowl and go for a sandwich or straight meat instead.

Tried Ricewood with friends for the first time this month despite hearing about it from friends. Ricewood operates out of a small stall in the front of the building. Since it was our first visit, the cashier gave us free Kool-aid which was incredibly refreshing and sweet on a hot day. I ordered the pork belly rice bowl with sesame cucumber bomb mild side. The meat was fatty and juicy with a smoky flavor -- generous servings too! The only thing I didn't care much for was the tomatoes that were added in. Overall, great service and delicious food!

Why am I addicted to Ricewood so much? Ok ok ok, for starters, this place is located inside of a food court/market kind of building. Parking is impossible at times, so keep that in mind. Now onto the good part. Get the rice bowl with the brisket and a side of pork belly. Literally SO amazing. The meat almost melts in your mouth. The cashiers are ALWAYS friendly and super on point. I highly recommend checking this place out.

I typically do some research prior to heading out to a new lunch or dinner spot. It helps build my anticipation for the meal ahead. This time around, I was preoccupied with work and did not do my usual due diligence. So when I entered Ricewood into Google Maps and quickly took a digital tour of the area for parking, I have to admit, I did not see the restaurant. I still headed out. While Google was able to pinpoint the location, I drove past it because I only saw the sign for York Food and Drink and not the one for Ricewood. I quickly re-routed and pulled into a back lot to discover the local area. Ricewood is located at the very front of the York Food and Drink property, operating from behind a small interior window, beside the bar. Their menu of offerings marks the spot. This menu is simple, rice bowls, sandwiches, and a few sides, the difference depending on the barbecued meat. I ordered the brisket rice bowl (served in a compostable bowl), tender and marbled brisket paired with soy- and vinegar-flavored rice topped with scallions and tomatoes. It was so tasty - and that's not just hunger speaking. The rice flavors paired so well with the richness of the Texas-style brisket, who would have thought? Additionally, I ordered 8oz of the indulgent pork belly for dinner later on in the day which was also tasty. With a seat by the window, I enjoyed my quick meal while enjoying the lively space. The staff here is friendly and helpful.

I've eaten here twice now. The meat is amazingly good! However, I wish they had another option for a side to accompany their awesome meat! I am not a fan of plain white rice. Rice pilaf, dirty rice, or even fries would make an awesome addition to the menu! read more

The food truck is awesome!!! Excellent brisket prepared and served by the nicest people. If you haven't been, it's a must and be on time cause they run out early. Finadene sauce is soy based with a hint of vinegar---gringo/mild or spicy, whatever floats your boat. It will enhance the flavor of the brisket. Cucumber pickles flavored just right. Great place with excellent food!!! read more

This is great food. I was one of the poor bastards that came later in the day and all they had was pork shoulder, but seeing how it's my first time here and I work only a stone throw away; I HAD to check this place out after hearing all the fans amazing reviews. They are tucked away behind a few stores, but don't let that dissuade you from thinking you're gonna be getting mediocre food because HOT DAMN. I walk up and the guy who served me gave me a run down of what they got,fortunately I knew what I wanted and that was a rice bowl. He informed me they were out of brisket but had pork shoulder and as said previously, it's my first time here so I was open to anything. He said it'd be ready in a few minutes, so I bought one of those glass bottle sodas and sat down at the outdoor dining area they had set up. Not a bad set up tbh, they have BBQ sauce in bottles you can put on your bowl or fill in to go cups along with plastic cutlery. Just as I sat down, my food was ready! Points for being fast cuz I only have a 30 minute lunch break. I hauled ass back to work and opened my edible treasure and holy crap this thing was beautiful. You have big scoops of rice, with chives and tomatoes on top, and layered on top of the steaming rice is this DELICIOUS pulled pork. I ordered no spice since it's my first time and I wanted to taste the flavors of this bowl of goodness. BBQ sauce is on the shoulder but it's just enough to taste, you can add more if you want (which I did). It has a light tang to it at the end which was pretty good! The rice is warm and I think it's sticky rice? Anywho, tasted great with the tomato and chives. When you get a bite of everything, its like a party for your tastebuds. Now, for you volume eaters out there, you WILL get full. I can put food away, but this thing was a beast. Sadly, I ate what I could and forgot about taking a picture but I'll get one the next time I go. I want everything on that menu, and Im gonna enjoy every second of it. Great job, Ricewood. I love this place! This is probably the best barbecue in the area. The brisket is my favorite thing on the menu--very tender with great flavor. I like the sauce also; it's a little sweet and a bit tangy. The pickled cucumbers are fantastic. There is always so much food in the bowl that I end up getting a second meal out of it. read more

The brisket and ribs rice bowls are amazing! I normally get mine with the spicy finadene sauce and I am not sure you can find a better meal in the area. Their meats are smoked to perfection each time I've visited & the rice has always been good. Recommend you get there right within the first hour because they tend to sell out. Also, there is normally a long line by the time I arrive which goes to show how many people love their food. You won't be disappointed! read more

The smell coming from the inside of the truck really drew me in after a colleague told me to try this little gem. I ordered the brisket bowl 50/50 (ask them, it's a mix of different sauces from what I understand) and took it back to work. You know how eating really good food makes you feel good? I actually started getting sad about halfway through when I realized that soon I wouldn't have anymore of that magical brisket left, it was THAT good. 10/10. read more

The best kept secret in Ann Arbor. This food truck has delicious BBQ. My husband is Chamorro and always wants to come get the rice bowl because it reminds him of Guam. These guys really know what they're doing! I had the ODB sandwich, which is HUGE and delicious. He had the brisket rice bowl (equally huge and delicious). If you have any room left we highly recommend the cucumber salad too! Come to ricewood (right behind Morgan &York) and you won't be disappointed! read more

This is a food truck and it is tucked in a little area off Packard St. near E. Stadium Blvd. with decent parking. Jorn Ct. comes on you quick so keep your eyes open. Very good truck with a limited menu of Brisket, Pork, Ribs on rice with a Finadene sauce on the rice and some tomatoes and shallots I believe. I had the brisket and it was very tasty, three nice thick pieces that were smoked nicely with a thick fat layer on top that was easy to remove. Brisket wasn't fall apart, it had a little chew to it. Very nice. The ribs were also tasty. The rice was good and the spicy sauce was good as well. My only argument would be i would have liked to have some other choices besides tomatoes and shallots on the rice. Black beans or something like that would have been nice. They also give you a little cup of marinated cucumbers that are good. It's a little pricey as well, I think it was a little over $30 with a tip and two glass bottle cokes! This place is the best! I've only ever tried the brisket but hot damn it's delicious. First time I had it the spiciest you can get it and it killed me (and I like spicy foods). Second time it got it midway spicy and it's still a little too spicy but no way am I going mild. Price seems high but I've never been able to finish one bowl. You can easily make 2 meals out of it so the price becomes reasonable. Do yourself a favor and eat there now! You won't regret it. My mouth is watering right now just thinking about it. read more

Wow. I expected good things from Frank Fejeran's new venture, but ... wow. This was probably the best smoked brisket I've ever had in Michigan, and it definitely blows everything else I've tried in Washtenaw County out of the water. The rice-bowl presentation is a bit different from the Texas pile-of-meat-on-a-tray style that some might expect of a BBQ truck, but it's attractive, filling, and astoundingly delicious! First and foremost, the meat was solid, and at half a pound, it's a generous lunch portion. I went for the brisket, and was not disappointed. It was smoked and blackened around the outside, but still tender on the inside. They serve their bbq over rice with some sauce, tomatoes, green onions, and sauce. I've never seen bbq with rice before, but it works wonderfully. The marinated cucumbers on the side were also pretty great, especially on a hot summer day. This coming from someone who does not like pickles. Actually I don't like vinegar much at all, so I was kind of surprised at how much I liked the food here, because a lot of it has a slightly sour taste. They don't overdo it though, so even I could still enjoy it. I can only imagine what it would be like for people who really enjoy those flavors. Food and seating are limited, so get there early. Drink selection is limited, but they have kool-aid! I love kool-aid. read more

Really great food from this food truck behind Morgan & York. Three different varieties of BBQ are served over rice with a side of cucumber slaw. Well worth the trip on a lunch day. You can eat outside at one of the picnic tables or take the meal to go. Definitely a new must try spot in Ann Arbor. read more

Meh...Have definitely had better barbecue in the Midwest(Chicago,St. Lous, Twin Cities) and don't even get me started about Atlanta/Carolina BBQ not to mention Texas. It's a neat idea and the sauce/rice is a good combination but I was disappointed with the overall lack of smoke flavor. The meat tasted like a combination of boiled roasted and smoked which is ok but not what I expect from a trailer with a smoker behind it. It was also tougher than I would expect. As an amateur smoked meat enthusiast I probably won't be back but I wouldn't turn it down. I do like the food truck with picnic tables idea. read more

The loaded fries were good! It's like a deconstructed slider w/ fries instead of the bun. The mac bites were a sinful snack on top of my 3k calorie meal. But hey, you live only once. Not spicy but so very good! I'll try "How dare you" next time!

The bao buns were very soft and loaded with flavor. I had the spicy pork and I wouldn't consider it spicy but it was bursting with umami. The wife had the shorty and said it tasted just like the fries but in a steamed bun. I also had the chashu but it was lacking compared to the other two. If we were to come back while visiting family we would probably get two orders of the loaded fries. The fries were super crisp and had a giant portion of short ribs, green sauce, and cilantro with radishes. The green sauce is a very unique combo of flavors but isn't spicy. The only downside today was they were out of drinks but were able to go inside York and get some water. Regardless the service was super quick and we hope to be back while visiting.

We have tried the fried meatball appetizer, the pizza zeppole, the meatball sub, and two of the specialty pizzas. All of it has been phenomenal. The prices may seem high but the portions and the food flavors more than make up for it. Currently they don't offer online ordering so getting through on the phone can be tough, but otherwise we have nothing to complain about. Already planning another visit. By the way, they have their own parking lot so easy to get to.

Being from Texas, we complemented them before we left and even gave another customer a quick opinion of how good the barbecue was. You may note that I'm not reviewing any sides because if the meat is as good as this was you don't need any sides. Their sauce is good, not too sweet and they have a sweeter option as well as a hot (habanero) sauce that is also good. If you need a good barbecue fix and you are in Ann Arbor you can't go wrong with Satchel's.

If you run out of Brisket every day by lunch seems like you would learn how to stock a reasonable amount. 7 out of 8 days, I came in here to get the brisket, and they were out by early afternoon (they are open until evening). Any other business would catch on to this. They are losing a ton of money, and it's frustrating from a customer standpoint (2 other friends feel the same way). They seem proud of this fact, but it's ridiculous not to meet a reasonable supply that is consistently in demand. It only teaches me not to come here because they are usually out. "Get here sooner" is a careless response for a customer service policy. The food is excellent though, which is the only reason I didn't give them a 1. read more
