If I'm being honest, provolone, pepper jack, or Swiss would have been a better cheese choice but it's still a pretty good sandwich....especially for the size and price point. The fries, although nicely crisp, seem to be in need of a little more attention. Salt and an aioli(as opposed to just ketchup) would make a world of difference. Somehow it has a slight creamy texture (like cheese), and juicy like a philly steak sandwich. It's a mom and pop place and the server was very pleasant. Dumplings and fries were crispy. My friend had the stir fried pork, which was a bit on the sweet side. The meat was probably frozen and thinly pre-sliced and did not have much meat flavor. I saw some Koreans ordering items not on the menu, so there might be other things to try. I would like to return for the traditional items and my review might go higher because we all had a pleasant lunch. BTW, the hoagie was big enough for two people. "Wait- We're going to a Korean restaurant?" My partner's family suggested we stop in here for some Korean food, and I'll admit. I was a smidge confused. The name and exterior do not stream "Korean Restaurant". Honestly, the interior doesn't scream it either. And yet, we ended up having a fantastic time. My partner had told me stories about how he had grown up eating at Broadway Cafe, and I could see why it had such a strong hold over his childhood. We chatted with the new owners who seemed very nice, and it was confirmed that the food tasted just as good as before. I ordered the Bulgogi Hoagie on the name alone. (Go on - Say it. It's just fun to say.) It was pretty solid. I'm not sure it's the best thing on their menu, but I enjoyed it. I was very envious of my partner's cheese steak hoagie which seemed like much more American fare. It was delicious. I had to hold myself back from eating his lunch instead of mine. We also got the bi bim bap which was much more traditional Korean food, and that was also a knock out hit. How do I describe this restaurant? It's hard to say. Authentically Korean-American? The best thing in their menu, to me, was the Cheese Steak Hoagie, and yet the Korean dishes were a knock out too. You've gotta experience it for yourself to understand. The owner of Broadway Cafe unfortunately just passed away, so they are temporarily closed this week (02/15-20/2021). Please support this mom and pop restaurant if you can when they reopen: they serve delicious Korean food (the best in Ann Arbor IMO), and they're extremely friendly and kind. They've added online ordering on their website https://www.broadwaycafehoagie.com/ since the pandemic started, which makes ordering easy and convenient. My favorite dish here is the Soon Dooboo ($10.35). It's a spicy tofu stew that comes with seafood and beef, but you can ask them to omit the beef or adjust the spiciness level if you want. The tofu is tender and the broth is flavorful and delicious. It comes with rice (no banchan), but you can purchase kimchi as a side. Another favorite here is the Dukbokki ($11.99), which are stir-fried Korean rice cakes with fish cakes and cabbage in a spicy sauce. It's a new menu item that they added last year, and it's surprisingly spicy. If you've never had dukbokki before, it's made from glutinous rice flour so it has a great chewy texture (similar to mochi or nian gao). read more

We are really hoping we might get some banchans with the meal, but it's not a distinctly Korean spot, so it's possible no sides. They were open, verified ahead on the phone. The woman that answered greeted me in Korean, as expected. I asked for their hours. 8pm. I thanked her. She hung up rather abruptly after I thanked her. Hopefully she was quite busy and not just being gruff and rushed. Total is $14.83 for the spicy squid. The order would take about 15 minutes to make it up. No banchans, as we had thought. Don't go to this place if you believe that the disabled should not be abused or mocked, even if folks say the food is ok. On Tues, I ordered a bulgogi hoagie for my husband from the cafe down the block because he loves them and we order them often in the 8 years we have lived in our location. He can also walk, slowly, to that location which gives him a little bit of freedom and independence. I called the order in at about 7:25 p.m.; they said it would be ready in about 10 minutes. My husband walks slowly because he has a physical disability as well as mild dementia, a side effect of which is expressive aphasia. He is a meek, gentle soul. He set out almost right away. I received a call at 7:40 because he hadn't picked up the order yet. I said he should be there in about 10 minutes or less. She said they closed at 8:00. I said I was aware of it. When he arrived he managed to say the word 'hoagie', an accomplishment. She gave him a regular hoagie and no fries. When I called to ask where the fries were - I didn't realize it was not the right hoagie - she yelled at me and said that he just said the word hoagie and she complained that he has trouble talking and usually he goes in there with a carer. (Sometimes he does.) They were very abusive about how they treated him and treated me and said that he can't come back there again without a carer. She swore at me Korean and hung up. The next day I went in because I don't want my husband treated that way and she said we know your husband. We know what he orders and you can't send him in here without somebody who can talk and I said to her well if you know what he orders why didn't you give it to him? You had the order right there and I was upset and she said you have to leave and don't come back or I will call the police. As I was leaving she called the police, and she came out in the parking lot telling the police my license plate number etc. As if I was trying to get away after she told me to leave. I called the police myself to tell them where I lived. They came and the officer said that this woman told him that I would be back the next day which is absolutely untrue. I will never go back there again. My husband, no one, deserves to be treated that way. read more

Possibly the best tofu soup (soon dubu) in town! This is a cute mom and pop shop that you'd never guess created delicious Korean food from the outside appearance or name - don't be fooled, they really know how to cook! We tried the tofu soup (flavorful, spicy, jammed full of soft, melt-in-your-mouth tofu and loaded with a variety of seafood and bites of beef). We also ordered the stir fried beef/veggie glass noodles (japchae), and it was the right balance of bell peppers, beef, and black peppered noodles. My only disappointment would be the lack of the usual side dishes that came with the meal. I would also skip the fried dumplings (minimal filling). I haven't tried their signature Bulgogi hoagie yet, but if the rest of the menu is anything to go by, it's going to be a solid, unique twist on a classic sandwich. Between the bibimbap and the steak Hoagie it's always a hard choice for me. Today was the steak hoagie but on occasions I explore the other parts of the menu never be disappointed. For what it is a moderately priced causal Korean dining as well as their wonderful cheesesteaks. They have done a great job protecting their customers during COVID their food is still as great as it has always been. I love getting their cheesesteak and than getting a side of kimchi, goes so well with the cheesesteak. The two last times I visited, I had their Su-lung-tang (Beef Bone Soup). Of all the Sulung Tang I had, this place by far has the best - better then Seoul Garden. The soup is white colored, almost cloudy, has noodles and slices of beef... it's served with rice and kimchi and comes with small amount of red sauce. The soup is not seasoned, so grab some salt on the table and season to taste... don't put too much... put little at a time and taste to your desire. A cute and tiny mom-and-pop stop, although, I'm curious where they got the idea to combine Korean food with a hoagie. I didn't get a fusion dish and instead, went for a traditional bibimbap, which tasted authentic. There is also brown rice tea or water, self-service. Warning: the beef ramen soup is slightly spicy, though not overly so! Reason why this is not 5 star - I don't particularly like their kimchi taste (this could be personal taste, as I tend to like more sour/less fresh kimchi), nor is the portion of kimchi very large. I've been going to this place off and on for 20+ years, and have not been disappointed on any visit. The bread is soft and fresh, the hot peppers (optional) are just enough to make it delicious and not ridiculous, and the cheese is mixed in very well. It's the perfect size for a large person (like me) to have for lunch - though it would be a heavy lunch, and also large enough to have lunch and save half for later. This is a must-try place, you will not be disappointed. There is seating inside, but the lunch crowd can get thick. It wouldn't hurt to ask someone if they are staying to eat, because most of the time people are waiting for their order and just copping a squat, and more than likely have to hustle back to the University of Michigan.
