I love checking out Korean restaurants whenever I can, so I was so excited to try Tomukun with friend and fellow Elite, Tiffany S. We met up for lunch recently and had a great experience. Nate and I first went into the wrong restaurant - they also have a more casual noodle spot next door, so be sure you know where you're meeting/going! We hadn't figured out if we wanted to do Korean BBQ or not when we first arrived, but we ended up choosing from the lunch specials/combos menu which was a great value. Plus I can never decide what I want, so it was great to be able to get a combo with two different options. I went with the bulgogi/nengmyun combo and we also got an order of mandoo to share. Our server was super patient and helpful with navigating the menu. The food came out quickly and everything was pretty tasty - I loved the mandoo (dumplings) - they were big and filled nicely. The nengmyun was good, not the best version of this dish that I've had, but it's hard to find in my city so I was happy to have theirs. I loved the spicy pork bulgogi; super flavorful and not too spicy. Nate got the sundubu stew which was delicious and quite spicy! The portions were large, especially for the price. I always forget how great it is eating in college towns - things can be way cheaper! Parking here is a bit tricky as it is anywhere downtown, but we lucked out with a street meter nearby. I come here often, and to me that earns a solid 5 stars. The service is consistently helpful and kind, and the food is reliably good in both taste and presentation. The concept of the restaurant is fun, and the space is always clean. There can be a wait for a table on weekends, but I wouldn't call that a negative, just something to keep in mind. read more

I lived in Korea for a year and this place comes close but doesn't quite have the authentic flavor. It is still tasty though! Same as next door, don't come hangry because you will be seated pretty soon but the host will forget about you because it's so busy (so it's not entirely their fault)! You use a QR code to read the menu. We ordered Sullotang (ox bone stew) and Soondabu (spicy tofu soup). The side dishes were delicious! My fav were the macaroni&corn, spicy sliced cucumbers, and fish cakes. The Sullotang was good but doesn't quite have the same creamy flavor in Korea. The meat was good and didn't have any fat on it. The Soondabu was sooo spicy. Way too spicy for me but my husband ate it all! Our server was nice. read more

This was my first time trying korean BBQ and I had a great experience! We got the marinated chicken and the ribeye. It was really good and I would definitely recommend it. The service was amazing and the people were really nice. The one thing to note is that if you get the chicken it does take a lot longer to cook than the beef. A longstanding crowd pleaser in town, and happy to see their continued success! For 2 people, we got the Japchae and a "Combo" of the Bulgogi (Marinated Ribeye) and Brisket. The order of meats comes with salad (which I really liked! fresh greens and a tasty dressing), rice, dipping sauces, and banchan side dishes. My favorite of the banchan was their dressed broccoli, or fish cakes. My least favorite was the cucumber (texture had gotten soggy). All the banchan can be refilled, but we didn't feel like we needed to. Of the meats, I like the marinated one much more, as it has its own flavor. The dipping sauces are tasty, but I still felt like the brisket tasted a bit on the unseasoned end even with the sauces. The Japchae is really tasty! Loved that, and felt like it rounded out the meal. The crisper veggies in this were great. For me personally, I do find it to be a little too much "work" and the meal to sit heavily afterwards. Might not come here often for those reasons for me, but think it's a good option for KBBQ in the area, and a fun activity with a group. read more

I was driving from Detroit to Dowagiac and craving some protein--thankfully, I found this spot along the way. After finding parking, I walked over and grabbed a table. Just a heads up: this isn't an AYCE KBBQ place--it's à la carte. I ordered the pork belly (naturally) and LA galbi, along with a couple of beers. The meats were well-prepped and looked great, served with onions, zucchini, and mushrooms. They provided three dipping sauces and a small selection of banchan. The staff was super attentive--checked in regularly and made sure I had everything I needed. The space is open, and for a KBBQ joint, surprisingly smoke-free. I think they use those built-in, under-grill ventilation systems, which made the whole experience a lot more comfortable. I've had better KBBQ, but this absolutely hit the spot. I would've liked to see a few extras--more banchan, lettuce for wraps, maybe steamed egg, fresh garlic, or some soup. I'm not complaining, just comparing based on my many KBBQ experiences. Huge salad, lots of side dishes, very nice about bringing more kimchi. I was certain it was going to be way too much food, yet somehow the three of us ate it all! Unfortunately, they were out of all of their Japanese beers, both draft and bottled. But our waitress brought me a sample of their amber on draft, which was very good, and I went with that. Excellent experience!! The only negative element of our visit was getting seated as there was a bit of a wait (about 25 minutes). They don't take reservations unfortunately and we were a slightly larger party. We ended up getting the Combo 2 per our server's recommendation. It came with a large variety of meat, banchan, rice, and sauces. It's $150 and feeds 5-7 people (we were 5 and absolutely stuffed. You could easily feed a group of 7). The banchan and rice are also replenishable for free, and they were lovely about requests for more. Our favorite banchan were the kimchi, the broccoli, and the salad. The dipping sauces were all great. Meats were excellent and they were very nice about providing extra tongs for us to use. Our favorites overall were the spicy pork and beef brisket. Service was PHENOMENAL. Our server was kind, helpful, attentive, and super on top of our requests. Probably some of the best service I've had in a restaurant to be frank. I was craving kbbq so I decided to try out this spot. I was being helped out by Zia and she was super quick and attentive. I ordered the galbi, brisket and pork belly and they were all delicious. Several times we had to wave someone down. The seafood pancake wasn't great either. It should be springy and light with the right mix of egg, flour, and potato starch. But theirs was kind of doughy and heavy. We were not impressed. The stir fry had two pieces of pork belly and the rest squid. The bi bim bap had a lot of rice but not enough toppings. Disappointed. This place is great! Went in for dinner, ordered two apps and then 3 meats for the bbq. Our apps were the pork dumplings and sweet potato noodles. I actually don't like sweet potatos but the noodles tasted nothing like sweet potato, and the pork dumplings were cooked perfectly and very flavorful. We ordered brisket, short rib and marinated rib eye. All of the meats were delicious and fresh. The veggies and sides that came with the meal were also fresh and good. They give you dipping sauces as well as a ton of accompanying sides, kimchi, pickled seaweed salad, regular salad, marinated egg, potato, and more. I really need this restaurant in my hometown!! Without a doubt, I would be a regular because this food is the best I've had. It's comparable to LA's Korea town restaurants. Funny enough, my partner and I haven't tried the kbbq yet because we wanted to enjoy some classic dishes like the cold noodle and soondubu, only to come back and crave the same dishes. I'm visiting Ann Arbor for a conference and this is my favorite restaurant in town. The lunch special is a great deal, but I mostly came here (twice in 3 days) for dinner. The hot summer calls for cold noodle soup, and the broth was perfectly balanced and light while the noodles chewy and delightful. I found out later they make the noodles in house. We also got sundubu and wow the flavor blew me away. If I didn't have to leave so soon I'd try the entire menu. The service was excellent and the ambiance great for small group hangouts. Highly recommend if you're curious or love Korean food. They also run a ramen spot next door, but I never tried it. read more

Not the best KBBQ I've ever had, but I credit how niche kbbq is in the area and I do think they give a very good portion for the cost. The staff was amazing and speedy. Our server said okay, and 5 minutes later a woman comes out and says to us "The kitchen has been closed since 9:30" and left. I looked at my watch and noticed it was 9:29. I understand closing the kitchen early, but did not appreciate the attitude the woman gave us. She spoke to us as if the kitchen had been closed for hours when, in fact, it had just closed. A simple "I'm sorry, our kitchen has just closed" would've been taken much better than her blunt statement without any other acknowledgment. Additionally, we were adding our last batch of protein to the grill, when another server (not our original server) came up and asked "Do you need a box?" as though trying to rush us. We had just started our last batch of protein, and I felt this was very rude to insinuate we should just take the meat home instead of finish our meal. This place is in a great location right near the UMich campus. We stopped by because I was craving some Korean food. We got the pick two Korean bbq combo (brisket and LA galbi), kimchi pancake, and corn cheese! All were super delicious. Service was good and the inside was great! Prices were a little pricey but that's somewhat expected for kbbq. I loved the free sides, salad, sauces, and even the veggies that came with the meat. The only downside was the coke was watery and light brown, but when I told my waiter, he brought me a sprite instead, which I really appreciated. Amazing and authentic Korean food in Ann Arbor. We tried the seafood pancake, TANGSOOYOOK (usually this is fried pork, but they offered chicken as an option and we went with that!), JAJANGMYUN, and Soonduboo. All dishes were incredibly delicious and tasted authentic, great portions, perfect level of spice, and topped with excellent service from the staff. The food here was a ten. I legit had either leftover boxes to take home they gave us so much. It last several meals and was delicious. While we did try a lot, the amount of meat they gave us for the BBQ seemed like a portion for more than one or two, and I am not complaining. We tried to cheesy corn. It was good and bubbling hot when it arrived. It had great cheese pull and was a great starter. I also had the fluffy egg which was steaming hot and fluffy and went well with the rest of the meal. I had the suju with guava and passion fruit syrup, so good and refreshing and paired well with the BBQ. We ordered the chicken bibimbop and the chicken was good, tasted like a teriyaki marinade. The sweet and sour fried chicken and peppers was also delicious and came with tons of chicken and veggies. I enjoyed the sides that came with the BBQ. We had fish cakes, pickled cucumbers, really nice kimchi, zucchini which I loved the most and some flavorful tea eggs. Plus a huge salad. We got a few tins of rice and for the BBQ we got bulgogi beef and bone in spare rib. Like I mentioned, it was so huge there was probably enough for at least four portions not one or two. All of it was great and really fun. The service on the other hand, was not the best. While overall the staff was nice our server was a bit snarky and not quite helpful, plus talked about me behind me back yet in front of me to her co-worker. Not impressed. At least wait until we left. I ordered my drink which is on the menu and she did not know what I meant. I tried to explain it and even show her, she was a bit rude about it and complained to her co-worker right after as I was walking to the restroom and saw me pass her. She did not offer to refill the drinks and it was very hot inside the restaurant. She also turned off the burner to the BBQ and never turned it back on, so we had to have another staff member help us because we did not want to press a bunch of buttons. The rest of the staff was nice and helpful. I would come back because I love their food here and next door at the noodle shop but the service was iffy for spending quite a bit of money here. Nonetheless I recommend both sides of this restaurant for fun experiences with food. read more

My co-workers and I decided to have Korean BBQ for lunch the other day. I should have also scheduled the afternoon off to nap after all the food we ate! My friend E chose the restaurant and a most excellent choice it was. We started with the not very Korean corn cheese with bacon. I mean, who can resist sweet corn, mozzarella cheese, and bacon? That dish disappeared very quickly. It was delicious. The sweet potato noodles (jopchae) were a pleasant surprise. They remind me of the Vietnamese mung bean noodles that I grew up eating. They are stir-fried in sesame oil with a sweet soy sauce, beef, scallions and mushroom. It's definitely a carry-out order when you're feeling lazy and don't want to cook. If I lived in Ann Arbor, I would order this all the time. We also ordered the seafood pancake (haemul pajeon). I didn't like this dish as much as the others probably due to the fact that I didn't try it until much later and it was cold by the time I ate it. Note to self - eat while hot. The pancake has shrimp, octopus, squid, mussels and green onions. It's definitely a large appetizer to share with your friends. We had one more seafood dish - the spicy squid stir fry (ojinguh bokum). I really enjoyed this dish. Just the right amount of spicy. The star of the lunch was not one but two orders of the marinated short ribs (yangnyum galbi). The short ribs are marinated in a sweet garlic soy sauce. It comes to the table as one big piece of meat. It also comes with a pair of scissors so you can cut the short ribs into bite size pieces thru the cooking process. We let E do all the cooking and she did a wonderful job. As with most Korean BBQ, you have lots of side dishes including kimchi, fish cakes and white rice. E and I made sure there were no leftovers of galbi. Nothing left but the bones. I will definitely make a return trip. The food and service are both great. One other tip....don't eat anything before you come here because your tummy will definitely be full after eating here. read more

Yikes. What a disappointment. This used to be one of my favorite A2 restaurants, but today's lunch was abysmal. First, our miso soup was brought to the table at room temperature. I told the server and her response was: "everything is always broken around here, let me see what I can do." A few minutes later she brought lukewarm miso soup to the table and said, "this is probably a little warmer, but I can't get it hot." Um...okay? We ordered stone bowl bibimbap (lunch menu), my wife got beef and I got seafood (extra $2). Neither bowl was hot enough to crisp the rice on the bottom. My wife had maybe 2 tablespoons of beef in her bowl, and I had two small calamari rings, a couple salad size shrimp, and some stray octopus tentacles. The seafood was tough and fishy smelling. There are much better Korean options in the downtown area, so I won't be back. read more

Would recommend if your crew loved to eat meat protein I will say I struggled to consume my share. But loved the feel of a communal meal preparation and eating & socializing. I initially was not a big fan of the us cooking our own cuisine, we enjoyed the fact that we can cook our food to our own personal satisfaction. If paying to cook to eat is not your cup of team simply order a pre-prepared entree. Veggies are fresh as are the raw cuts of meat. Sauces are delicious - though I cannot vouch for the spicy one since we didn't eat it. Suggest not ordering more than 2 animal meats if you choose to prepare yourself- we struggled to get it all cooked so we could take it home. Moderate to pricey - considering this is meat not seafood. But the Liberty Street downtown Ann Arbor location is probably why. Servers have to constantly bring clean grill tops especially if you have larger amount of meat to cook. Bring you biggest carnivore appetite to this place! Park in garage nearby - finding street parking is like finding a needle in a haystack. Non appetite meat eaters!!! read more

Tomukun was our first indoor dine-in restaurant experience since COVID restrictions were lifted. I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous about it. However, the precautions that Tomukun took made me feel safer. You can tell that their capacity is slashed at least in half to give at least 6' between tables. We came around 6pm on a Saturday and the wait wasn't terrible - about 45 minutes. Other safety measures include but aren't limited to: *They don't re-use bowls/banchan plates (not sure if they did before, but they just give you a new one if you ask for more). *They have you wait outside for your table *They also have outdoor dining if that's more your speed! It was my first time here and it was a really positive experience! We had BBQ combo #1 with: MARINATED SHORT RIBS - this was probably our favorite. bone-in keeps it nice and juicy! BEEF BRISKET - Really nicely thinly sliced! SPICY PORK - nice marinade. I generally don't prefer a heavily marinated pork to something simple like the short rib/brisket, but that's purely personal taste preference. So if you're looking for something that packs a lot of flavor, this is a great option! They don't have radish or rice paper here unfortunately!
