I didn't notice anything different or unusual about this exam, and wasn't told it was any different than a "routine exam." BUT STILL... RICHEN'S "UP-CODED" ME AFTER THE FACT, for a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, MORE EXPENSIVE EXAM - one I WAS NEVER INFORMED OF, AND WAS GIVEN NO OPPORTUNITY TO DECLINE - even though they had three opportunities (listed above) to warn me and get my consent. This would be a huge problem on its own - NO CONSENT. So then, I get a $375 bill, and had to call billing. I was initially told they never even submitted it to my insurance, saying, "gee, we're only human." Well, $375 is MUCH, MUCH MORE than they ended up getting from my insurance. "Human" nature to try for more, I guess. But even when they submitted it, they billed as though it was for a MEDICAL SPECIALIST (code 99204), which IS SIGNIFICANTLY MORE MONEY FOR THEM, AND has a copay FOR ME. This was INSTEAD OF the "routine VISION exam" I scheduled with them, I and came for. This was supposed to have billing code 92004 or S0620, and $0 copay, as billed by my 4 previous optometrists. I had to investigate and uncover all of this myself. When I called billing again, they tried to justify the higher charge by characterizing my ROUTINE exam as being a "SPECIALIST" exam (NOT TRUE), performed in an OPHTHAMOLOGY office (NOT TRUE) by an OPHTHAMOLOGIST (NOT TRUE). Dr. JEDEDIAH B. LISTER (an OPTOMETRIST) is the only Doc in Richens Sunset office. In summary, Dr Lister either: 1. Didn't do anything outside a "routine" exam, yet up-coded it as though it was a medical exam, 2. Or, he performed an exam I did not ask for, was not told about, and did not approve. Which is it? He noticed I had mild cataracts. (No treatment, or advice). So what? A routine exam is for the purpose of noticing many things including cataracts. My previous 4 eye doctors, over 11 years, noticed the same cataracts, but NONE of them tried to charge me extra for just noticing it. The billing dept. refused to correct this bill, and as others have said, threatened collection plus 33% if I didn't pay up. This rolled off her tongue as though it were a script she recites every day, and in fact, she admitted that they BILL THIS WAY EVERY DAY, which tells me this is NOT an honest mistake. She also claimed that my Medicare Advantage always has a co-pay for vision exams (COMPLETELY FALSE). But if that were true, then they should have warned me in advance the exam would not be $0 copay, as I specified to them. She also told me to go ahead and post bad reviews and complaints, which sounds like this is not at all unusual for Richen's. When I asked to speak to the office manager, I was told this is the office manager's last day. I wonder why. read more

I paid them $1000 of dollars without a complaint and they told me everything was paid in full. Then they decided to send me to collections for $75. So petty and disappointing. I am still dealing with a detached retina problem that started 8 months ago. I had my first surgery was there at Southwest surgery, (there surgery center) to fix a dislocated inner ocular lens which resulted in my retina being detached. 2 more surgerys at the Moran eye center in SLC and my eye is still useless. One more surgery to go. The Moran eye center gave me financial assistance because of my low income and accepted Medicare as paid in full. I paid off Southwest surgery except for 1$75. I asked for financial assistance. "We don't do that." They sent my $175 bill to a collection agency. Look out if you need financial help! read more

The oath a doctor takes is to "do no harm"....at least that was my understanding. Without regard to my history of eye infections (and their cause), Dr. Richens inserted a tear duct plug that was the beginning of long term suffering on my part. Thinking it was the plug causing my eye irritation, I opted to have my tear duct cauterized, which Dr. Kristin Tarbet (a "doctor" who lives and practices in another state) agreed to do. Upon administering the numbing shot, she witnessed puss coming from my tear duct, which she later said was not there... and noted as such in my file. I have since been dealing with what seems to be an infection... been to multiple clinics, been on multiple medications, at the recommendation of Dr. Richens... it's been a year. Today, they referred me to another eye clinic in the city. That should tell you all you need to know. read more

I was seeing another office in town and was seeing continuous degradation in my vision. after countless new prescription lenses and years of frustration, I visited Dr Richens office where she recommended a procedure to restore and stabilize my vision. I love the time and the work Df Riches has gave me. I hate her billing department. I had my eye work done and was really happy, paid bill in full and 6 months later get a 300.00 bill for the surgery center charge which I showed I paid for but still paid it again, then a yr later had to have a touch up which I ask Dr Riches is there a charge and she said Medicare would cover it and I ask about cost for surgery center and she said no charge, well a month later I get a 300.00 charge I found with them and they told the doctor doesn't know what my insurance would cover. After being patients for 24 years, 2025 is the year that my family and I are going elsewhere. Dr. Richens is a kind and caring doctor. I believe I was one of her first patients when she opened her doors and it was just her and her husband running the show. I wish we could go back to those days! Optical shop advised me Richens got my script wrong & verified with Trial Frames. Went back to get script corrected was told two different times there would be no charge. Called day of appointment & was told would be charged and submitted to insurance. Did not want to see the Dr., just wanted my script they screwed up corrected. Was told by rude staff there was nothing they could do about it. As a senior with 25 yrs med experience I would like to make this know to all other seniors especially those on Medicare and our new friends moving into the area. Although Sharon Richens's is a phenomenal doctor in Surgeon there is something to be said about the medical staff. The MAs and tech's are rude. The billing person is very rude and threatens you that they're gonna take you to Collections but we all know that there is no Medical Collections aren't any longer. It doesn't go on your credit report. I paid down my bill from $1200-$383. This is how I received a bill I was getting monthly eye injections and my insurance decided not to pay it but Richens Eye Center continue to give me the Eye Injections and turn around and give me a whopping bill of $1200. I had no recollection this was going on behind my back. Also, the Front Desk is rude. If you ask them a question, they run to the billing department or a manager and get them and then they yell at you in front of all the patients in the waiting room this company is unprofessional. I'm so glad I'm no longer a patient of theirs. It is a nightmare and it has been for a very long time with a breath of fresh air when you go to another doctor's office. I couldn't imagine going to work there every single day. lastly, the whole staff knows when you inquire about something or you disagree about signing a document for 48 hour notice to Richens eye center if you can't make the appointment not that I've ever not shown up for my appointment but I was told that it's because other patients will not show up for their appointment. Absolutely the worst eye care I have ever had. Dr. Shawno Mayo is a snake oil salesman. He pushed Cataract surgery on me, my eyes don't need it. I have another doctor in Las Vegas I consulted after my visit with Dr. Mayo. He was concerned with the diagnosis I received at Richens Eye Center, he was being too kind. Wait time, ridiculous, and pushing unnecessary surgery is not acceptable. I turned them into the State of Utah, which is a waste of time, so I leave this review which hopefully will have more impact. I have had competent and amazing care at Richins eye center as have my parents and my son! I would recommend them to anyone. Dr Richins is an excellent eye doctor and surgeon and has done both cataract surgeries and lense installation for my parents as well as surgery for stys and eyelid surgery to remedy eyelashes growing towards the eyeball. I have been very impressed for decades now! She is also very personable and listens well at each appointment and does a very thorough exam. I was referred my my Aunt who is a long time patient. I received a few eye exams over the years. However, I would not recommend using the front office that deals with ordering eye glasses. Everytime they have dropped the ball. They don't return calls, there is always a problem with the order that is a direct result of inattention to details. Waiting weeks or months due to their inept handling of orders is common. To get resolution requires repeat visits to the office (since they don't return calls) to pester them to do their jobs. After waiting a month for new lenses on my glasses, I was informed the lab was waiting for my frames before starting. They forgot to inform the lab the order was for lenses only. Now I have to wait again. I informed them that I will never come back again after this last problem. I have ordered 6 pairs of glasses from them over the years. Every time there has been a problem. I'm sure I'll have no problem finding another business to help me. read more

I wish I could give them Zero! I went in for a vision check for new glasses. Richens was listed as one of the EMI authorized providers. We get one Free exam each year for our glasses. That is what I went in for. They billed this as a medical visit which makes the exam much more expensive and my insurance would cover the whole amount. Just a warning. Dr. Richens and Dr. Gibbs are great, there billing system is terrible, they had billed by previous insurance company never heard back for a long time, They said I had a past due bill, I had already given them my new insurance information but they never updated it, they resubmitted and then they called me back with a balance and said that It was going to collection. I told her I would call her back the same day, I got busy and didn't call her back till the next day, I ended up leaving a message never heard back, called back to pay and it was sent to collections, of course they said that there was no message, how convenient, It took then a long time to get it fixed and no time for me to take care of it. LONGEST WAIT TIMES BY FAR. 50 min. initially, then another 30 min. alone in a small room, 2 hrs. 20 min. total just for my yearly covered insurance exam! Many reviews harp on this. I even filled in for a sudden cancellation which should have just stayed cancelled! 2. HIGH EMPLOYEE TURNOVER. The front desk and an assistant were both training new people, resulting in significant incorrect procedures, for which I had to go back to do over again! Might explain the unacceptable wait times. 3. A VERY DISTRACTED ASSISTANT, AND NOT A DOCTOR, EVEN UNBELIEVABLY CONDUCTED MY EYE CHART TEST! A most embarrassing thing happened when the doctor announced a totally incorrect assessment based on the regular assistant's wrong entry that I wasn't wearing contacts, when I was. He wasn't around to even know I wore contacts. Unbelievable. 4. TRUSTWORTHY ISSUES, DOCTOR ISSUES FALSE STATEMENTS! at my expense! Dr. May declared from the completed exam that my eyes were in very good condition, a clean bill of health; when afterwards I brought up the subject of cataracts. I must have uttered the magic word. For not until then, did he begin telling me of its signs to look out for and to come back every year to check on progression. Kind of amusing, what some will attempt for money. No cloudiness, and me secretly knowing that an eye doctor said as much last year. What wasn't amusing, was later discovering that he actually diagnosed me with cataracts, and due to that, have out-of-pocket expenses I didn't have with other providers! And the office said I couldn't have my eye prescription; an automatic with other providers; because he wrote down that I was going to stay with contacts! A baffling false statement, he only does eyeglasses! I specifically told him I need it to see if I should get new glasses of course! Unbelievable! 5. KEEP ME IN THE DARK, FLEECING ME AND THE INSURANCE COMPANY! Besides the hidden things that Dr. May put in his report, billing wouldn't explain to me why I now have expenses, such as $35 to obtain my prescription. I had to make time for research, discovering that they would now file for medical and not vision! Or so they say, who knows if they will file both, and have both me and insurance pay for the same things. Obviously the direction they're headed is to squeeze as much profit as possible, with no consideration for their patient. Incomprehensible. I would definitely go to another provider to show the insurance company that I was falsely diagnosed for cataracts if it weren't for the additional expense this cycle. The nightmare continues. The billing department and the staff are the worse possible employees anyone would want for their practice. Richens lack of empathy and social skills and lack of professionalism are apparently a requirement for her staff as well. They are consumed to fill their pocketbooks with your money, and they seem to have a philosophy where the customer is always wrong. I would not treat my worst enemy the way they have treated me, and most patients would probably agree with me that Richens has no respect for your time. The receptionist will tell you to expect a 2-4 hr wait when you are making an appointment. The billing department in particular have no idea what they are doing, and have led me to take action against them for malpractice. I wish I had never heard of this place. My diagnosis changed every couple of weeks and they had no idea what they were trying to treat, nor did they care as long as I filled their wallet . I paid them over 5k and my eye site is worse now than it was before I went there. I wouldn't bother going there, unless you have 2 hours to waste, while waiting to be seen. I understand, there are times when unforeseeable things happen to cause a delay, but it continued to happen the 3 times I went there! (I apologetically rescheduled after getting a migraine, while waiting over 2 hrs the 1st appt) And even tho I have insurance that covers the cost of the exam, I could not receive my eye prescription, to get my glasses without paying $35 out of pocket 1st. I was then told it's in the papers I signed, when I first came in. I've never heard of that before, and called my insurance and the representative I spoke to hadn't heard of that either. She recommended that I go to a different place, and just cover the $4 co-pay. No stars, but I couldn't post if I didn't give any. In my opinion it's not only unprofessional, it's very inconsiderate. I needed to replace my glasses, which I came in with. They told me that I couldn't have any without an eye exam... which they could only schedule a couple weeks later. When I went in, they scanned my glasses and did the eye exam. Which were the same prescription, as I already knew was going to happen. Big waste of time. Then I finally get glasses from them and they end up costing hundreds of dollars. I then, 1 yr later try to get my prescription from them and they won't send it to me, and tell me that just after 1 yr my prescription has expired and I have to get another eye exam. To start off, Dr. Gibb has been great and all of the staff are great. The facility is first class, and new. I would give them 5 stars. HOWEVER they have the worst phone system of all time. You literally cannot talk to a person. To book an appointment you end up leaving a voice mail, and they call you back. If you know who you are trying to talk to, there is no directory and no direct lines to call back. There is no option to press a button to talk to a person, in fact not only is "0" not an option, it hangs up on you. I literally find it easier to stop in rather than try to call. This 20 year patient is considering changing Drs because of their horrible phone system. read more

I really enjoyed the talk with Dr Richens and felt she did a good job.But the accounting practice there is terrible. When I went in and was told what it would cost. I said ok and paid it. Then after I was told I needed to pay an additional 325.00 for the surgery center. I showed them I already paid that and they said it was something else. So I paid it and then later I get another bill for 375.00 and I sent in all my paper work but yet they said it was a copay from I insurance company. When they just said it says at the bottom of the page this might not cover everything. Then I ask about another charge and they said. When you get another type of lens we have to check to make sure it will work and they charge you an additional 300.00 per eye which they never tell you about this.they don't tell you everything and that isn't how you should run a business. It's like they don't want to tell you everything up front. I have sent 4 other people to them and now feel bad doing this. I won't tell anybody else about Riches eye center.I am truly upset about how they treat there clients. I give 4 stars for Dr Riches and 0 stars for her company. So very disappointed. read more

I feel these guys are crooks. My tale of woe is glass lenses, so if you want plastic, you may be ok. But I doubt it. Although I had my old lenses, the exact same lenses I wanted. My bi-focals were set far too low (about 3/8ths of an inch from the bottom, the distortion in the upper part was terrible (there is always some distortion when you move your head from side to side),but the worse thing was that the lab they sent my frames to (they needed them to fit the lenses) bent the nose pieces in (I have metal frames which are delicate), so there was no way I was going to send the frames back to them. I asked for a refund and got a check for $70 out of $192. These guys can kiss my you know what. read more

I had Lasik Eye Surgery at Richens Eye Center. I was nervous beforehand, and during but Dr. Richens had me calm, she was talking to me during, and was super professional! We had many follow-up appointments afterward, even once before the building was even open, because I was leaving on a trip! I see great now, and I'm so glad I went to Richens Eye Center. I've been to two of their offices now, both on multiple occasions with my parents. The staff is nice and helpful. You can tell at the St George clinic that they are just as frustrated with the wait time and Dr Richens lollygagging as the patients are (our appointments there have always been with Dr. Richens) My parents beee to see a specialist but no one needs to wait as long as she makes people wait while she's belittling her nurses in the hallway. The Mesquite clinic has a better doctor and wait time but I despise the fact that the receptionist smokes right outside the front door! You're right next to other offices, including one where pregnant women frequent! You have Dr Richens telling my father to quit smoking all while the woman in mesquite spends more time outside smoking than inside working. And when she is inside, she's very gruff when someone doesn't seem to understand her. The nurses and most of the reception staff is this places saving grace. read more

I am upset with Riches Eye Center because the Dr. Prescribed a completely incorrect prescription for glasses, which I, of course, paid to have made up and then COULD NOT see out of them. His statement upon returning for another exam was that there would be no cost for that re-visit.. I have since that time been receiving a monthly bill from them. I have also asked for a reimbursement for the INcorrect RX glasses I purchased. I made an appointment to talk to their accounting person and took her all the needed paperwork to explain why and how much I wanted to be reimbursed for their mistake, and only continue to get bills for $35.
