New dog dad here so not sure what expect. I came here when my adopted pitbull was experiencing diarrhea for the past few days. The staff was nice and professional. Dr. Kwon is kind and patient. He asked me a few questions about how the diarrhea started which I answered. He listened but I didn't find this trip to be particularly helpful other than him ordering a fecal sample and then going from there. Not sure if it was worth the fee just so he can tell me that. We have only had good experiences bringing our cats here. We switched here from VCA because we never were able to see the same vet twice and they nickel and dime you for all services. Dr Kwon is kind, down to earth, and patient. He has never recommended unnecessary tests or procedures, and when we have ordered tests, he takes the time to explain the results and plan without seeming rushed. I took my dog there for an issue that I have been having with him for years he always, I was giving my dog front line to treat his flea infested but I never seen the fleas go away and he was still getting ate up I have a white dog and he turned red every time these fleas to start biting him all over his body he just hadn't read spotsI . I had taken him to the East Bay SPCA on Baldwin and all they did was take my money and did not treat my dog for his problem. Once I got my doctor this veterinarian, he treated my dog for the flea infection and allergies and change the flea medicine that I was giving him to a chewable. 0-stars that would still be too good. Kwon isn't a good vet, and doesn't provide any professional service. He doesn't care about you or your pet. My dog has a heart murmur, and he prescribed a whole bunch of pills to see which ones would work. I wanted to ease my dog into the medicine. I'm not comfortable going from 0 pills to 6-8 pills at time, 3x a day! When i went back to get a refill/recheck, he was nasty and very condescending about why I didn't give him all the medicine, and basically goes "What do you expect from me? I can't help you" and just gave me a list of other vets to go to. His bedside manner is atrocious. Perhaps that sh!t would fly in Korea, but I'm not down with that here. I tell everyone to STAY AWAY from here, Kwon is a POS, and has no people skills. read more

I took my cat here for the first time about a month ago for her last day here with us. I was really impressed with how caring and patient the staff was with me for one of the most difficult decisions of my life. I opted to receive ashes and they put together a nice package with it. The prices were reasonable as I called around. The only nit picking notes I have is that the vet made me pick up my cat after giving her the sedative (maybe was thought of another way to say goodbye) and one of the notes was in a handmade envelope from printer paper. Again, just me being picky but overall it was a great experience. read more

I used to help run a non kill shelter for twenty years and know a good vet when I see one. I started coming here about four years ago and have been super happy with the care of my dogs and cats. Dr. Kwon is very in touch with my animals, is an excellent diagnostician (he cured a horrendous dog skin issue that two specialists and $3000 could not help), a skilled surgeon (pets recover quickly without pain and scars are minimal) and has reasonable prices. Everyone has had staffing issues since Covid, but this hospital has a compassionate full staff and there is a sign on the counter that explains some of the new folks are in training. I recommend this vet without hesitation. read more

Dr. Kwon and his staff are wonderful. We have been taking our many dogs & cats to this clinic for a very long time & Dr. Kwon is excellent. He has saved my animals' lives more than a few times over the years & he is the master of leaving no stone unturned when it comes to diagnosing an illness & devising a treatment plan. The experience with this vet is so infuriating !! I feel so bad and horrible for taking my poor baby to this vet. They made him worse! He had a limp due to arthritis in his front right leg/shoulder and after an X-ray was done to my poor baby, he is favoring his left back leg even more!!! I asked what they did and someone on the phone said that they had to "stretch" him for the x-ray and may have sprained a muscle or something! WHAT???? How rough you gotta be to actually manage to sprain a part of a dog's body that was not injured in the first place? Totally regret taking my precious boy there. When asked if they had him sedated (asleep) for the x-ray, they said yes but in their report that we have, it says it was hard to take an x-ray because my dog was too nervous and was "moving". So I highly suspect they did NOT sedate my dog as they claimed and man-handled my poor baby. Yes my dog is a huge Pit mix weighing 85lbs, which is why we opted to pay the extra for sedation so they could x-ray without him being so nervous and convulsing. If you don't want to feel like shi+ for taking your baby to these barbarians, then look for someone who will treat your pets/family with care and compassion. I took my critters to the last owner who retired and was great. I feel the current Vet and his staff are good as well. I don't get the "you are just a number" vibe here. I recently went to a vet in the North Bay under new ownership and it felt like an auto dealers finance office. Richmond vet has assisted with end of the life services for 2 pets now and were considerate and aware of my feelings. I understand that vets must struggle with costs but Richmond Vet hospital in my opinion keeps it competitively priced for Richmond's less that wealthy customers. read more

I've never left a review on yelp but I believe this needs to be said because my dog is my baby. He had his first appointment for vaccines and it was so painful to see the process and treatment towards my dog. I have been to other vet clinics that truly cared for my dog and didn't force anything. The vet at this location was even hesitant to touch my dog when he should be trained to work with animals. I was confused with the whole set up of the room and it doesn't feel like a good place to take my baby and will definitely switch vets even if this place has a good price, my dog deserves the best care. read more

As you can see by recent reviews, there has been a change in doctors. I saw Dr. Kwon today and found him to be rude and uncaring. He seems to "know it all", and while I am not arguing that I know more than a veterinarian, it would have been nice if he actually listened, and then when answering, offered more than, "doesn't work," or "doesn't matter." I asked for a different flea medicine and he refused, only offering to sell what they have at the counter. Also, rabies is 100% required to take your animal here because a cat bit a tech that wasn't rabies vaccinated, so be prepared for that even if you have an indoor cat. Overall I was shocked my wife had such good things to say from last year, but it turns out this was a different doctor. read more

Dr. Quan has the worst bedside manner of any vet/doctor/medical professional I've ever experienced. We recently made the very tough and heavily considered decision to put down our 16-year-old pup. His examinations aren't thorough, he doesn't communicate well about his diagnosis, and he doesn't listen to pet owners. Over a year before we brought our dog in to be put down, Dr. Quan discovered a tumor and suggested we euthanize him. We wanted to hold out longer since we were hopeful his health would turn around (and it did for a while). However, after a downturn in his health, we decided that his quality of life didn't justify his holding out any longer. Dr. Quan weighed the dog and said because he hadn't lost any weight, he would refuse to put him down (even though he had told us to put him down a year ago). His guideline for euthanasia is simply "has the dog stopped eating and has he lost weight." However, our dog had a complex set of known health issues (blind, deaf, almost no energy, tumor, skin condition, sporadic eating, blood in stool, and more) and by all standards I've read, he met the criteria for euthanasia. However, he refused to take that into consideration. Dr. Quan looked at our dog for less than 5 minutes, dug his heels in on refusing to euthanize the dog (disregarding our input on the dog's quality of life), and just tried to prescribe painkillers (for no specific diagnosed reason, he just "maybe his spine hurts"). A week later we got a second opinion from another vet, who immediately agreed it was time for our pup to be put down. Our family highly regrets the thousands we spent at Dr. Quan's clinic only to be treated so poorly at the end of our dog's life. read more

The wonderful Dr. Han retired several years ago. Dr. Kwon has a very poor bedside manner and doesn't like being asked questions--in short, a jerk. The few words he does say are very hard to understand. As others have said he does a very cursory exam (required for vaccinations). But worst of all, he unethically said the dog needed a teeth cleaning--very expensive and hard on the dog since it requires general anaesthesia. When we transferred to a new vet, they told us no, the dog doesn't need a cleaning. Avoid at all costs! read more

Easy, friendly service, professional and most of all, caring to my pet. I came in here for a vet appointment because my dog has a rash on his paw and I couldn't figure out what to do. They were the only one who had an appointment that would work with my work schedule. I called them to request for an appointment and told them my concerns. They addressed my concerns and made me feel at ease. I was able to go through most of the process through the phone and they walked me through the forms I had to fill out online because I was new to the clinic. All very easy and supremely efficient due to covid protocols. All processes were very straight forward. When I was there for the check up, staff emembers were all friendly. They said hi as a group, they spoke and asked questions in a nurturing way. They were also very respectful of my dogs' personal space and making him feel comfortable. Once I arrived into the room, it didn't take long for the vetanarian to come in and exam my dog. A very personable vet The vet was already informed on my dogs' situation, had some follow up questions. Examed my dog and boom, I was done. He understood my dog was very scared and did not examine or keep us there more than he had to. Before I left he asked if I had any questions and i asked about my dogs' teeth and if it looked like it needs any cleaning. He gave me some sound advice and pointed out to me what to look out for while brushing. I highly appreciate that I was not being sold on a product I did not need. I really appreciate how much care went into my vet appointment. I'm definitely coming back for my next visit. read more

We recently went to Richmond Vet for an urgent rhinoscopy for a suspected foxtail, that my normal vet couldn't squeeze us in for. They were kind to fit us in almost immediately and the check-in process and front desk staff were all great and decorated a cute medication bag for my dog. But the rest of our experience was frustrating. After paying hundreds of dollars and sedating my dog, the procedure was cut short due to an excess of blood in the nasal canal. I can't speak to whether that would have happened with any vet, but it's the follow-up care that upsets me. The vet told me he thought it was unlikely there was a foxtail still in her nose (despite that she had almost definitely had one only hours before -- which he agreed with -- and he didn't see it go anywhere!) and put her on a week of medications. She came home with her nose still literally caked in blood, and miserable. When I called back twice over the next few days worried that she was still compulsively sneezing in fits, they told me it could be from "post procedure irritation" and to wait until her medication course was finished almost 4 days later -- basically brushing me off the second time I called. Fortunately, our regular vet at Woodminster saw the record we sent and our account and told us to go to an emergency vet ASAP, and we took her back for another (cheaper!) rhinoscopy at SAGE veterinary in Concord, where they successfully removed a large foxtail from her left nostril -- and managed to send her home clean and much less groggy despite a shorter stay. She was so happy the next morning and the few sneezes she has had from the irritation are (as I suspected) absolutely nothing like those she was having previously and which I had described to Richmond vet. If I had taken this vet's advice, my dog would have been, at best, extremely uncomfortable for several more days -- only for us to have to pay for a re-procedure anyway -- or the foxtail could have migrated further up the canal, requiring a much more expensive and invasive procedure -- or something worse! I don't like to write bad reviews for people who are doing their best for my pet, but I wouldn't trust this vet with my dog again -- at the very least, I would NOT go here for any kind of delicate or high stakes procedure. read more

We took a neighbors advice after our normal vet suggested a deep teeth clean at over 1000 bucks for sir Winston. Can't argue with the price it was half of what we were initially quoted. Communication was not stellar as we are used to follow up and specific communication about the progress any issues and day after follow up call. Parking is a challenge as well, as it's near the underpass on MacDonald and I-80. The staff seemed organized and friendly enough and the Doc was very nice too. We thought about actually changing, vets but the poor communication post event was concerning. Winston kept trying to scratch an area on his hind qtr. turns out when we called they mentioned it was difficult to find a vein they said. Ah would have been nice to know!!! Also he seemed woozy for a day and we called again to inquire. Then no follow up the next day. So we will definitely come back in an emergency or if our place charges a ton. But I know now the difference between services. When sir Winston is such a vital part of the family you want the best for him, so we will keep our normal vet. read more

I was super lucky to find Richmond Veterinary Hospital when I lived in the Bay Area. I'm in New York now, and I have wished many times that I still had Richmond Vet nearby. When I was a customer of Richmond Vet, I had a wonderful Maine Coon mix. He had been a stray for several years when I adopted him from SF SPCA, and he came with a bunch of health problems. One of those problems involved crystals forming in his urine and blocking his urethra. I went for a consultation at a vet in Concord, and that vet recommended amputating my cat's penis as a first step. Then, I went to Richmond Vet Hospital for a second opinion. Dr. Han picked up my cat, kissed him on the top of the head, and squeezed his belly. The crystal plug released and my cat, eyes crossed with relief, peed all over the metal examination table. Dr. Han recommended I change my cat's diet, which I did, and my cat was cured! When my cat got sick again, a few years after I moved to New York, I saw several vets, went through several surgeries, and even got a vet tech to regularly administer fluids and medications at my home (before I went through the experience, I would have thought this was crazy behavior for a pet owner. But as many people who love their pets like family find out, they will do and spend whatever they can to save the animals). The whole process of illness was so stressful, and sad, and it was made worse by the fact that I didn't trust any of the vets I found like I trusted Richmond Veterinary Hospital. On one particularly difficult day, I called Richmond Veterinary Hospital from work, crying. Stephanie picked up the phone. I hadn't been there in years, so I explained who I was and told Stephanie that I was at the end of my rope and needed advice from someone I could trust. I don't recall exactly what she said to me, but I remember that Stephanie was extremely thoughtful and kind. I'll always be grateful for her comfort in that moment (you can give me someone with a no-nonsense demeanor who shows up for people - and animals - when it really counts, any day). No vet clinic is perfect, but I have recommended family and friends to Richmond Veterinary Hospital, and I'll continue to do so. A lot of negative experiences happened but I kept going to this vet because one of my dog had complex medical history. I finally stopped coming when not one but TWICE they gave me the wrong medication for my little epileptic dog. She was taking 4x the dose every day twice a day for a week. Then again, it happened a g a i n! I was quick this time and checked before leaving. Their justification was they confused the dosage with the quantity. Ok. Time for an update. The front officer manager is HORRIBLE. On a separate note, there will be No more Saturday hours. I order flea medicine for my dogs from Chewy and when Chewy called them because of some issue, they flat out rejected and denied the prescription. Both of my dogs see Dr. Kwon. We Love Dr. Han! When I say we I mean myself and my amazing cat Fahdee (pronounced Fatty). Dr. Han is like a cat whisper. I've never had a vet that seemed so in tune to the feline mind. As soon as he lays his hands on Fahdee she behaves and is calm. Whether he is giving her a shot or looking at her teeth she just lays there! I recently had to take Fahdee to see Dr. Han because she had a weird rash for months (gross I know) and it just kept getting worse because she wouldn't stop licking it (even more gross). Dr. Han's office was able to squeeze me in the same day I called and after a through exam Dr. Han let me know that Fahdee had very sensitive skin and he gave her a shot of cortisone. He also answered all my worried mother questions and was overall pleasant and awesome. Four days later there was such a dramatic positive change in Fahdees skin that I called the office almost in tears of happiness to praise Dr. Han. Fahdee has also been seen by the other doctor, Dr. Ahn and he is also very nice. And yes the other yelpers are correct, Dr. Han can be very hard to understand sometimes, he does have a very thick accent, but it doesn't matter, he is awesome and I trust whatever he is doing even if I don't understand what he is telling me. The ladies up front are also very friendly and love animals too!!!! It was $50 for an office visit and the shot of cortisone was $45. I really don't like leaving negative reviews for people trying to run a business. Being a vet is a lot of work and a lot of responsibility, and I wish everyone well in what they pursue. But I feel the need to at least let folks know that they may want to ask a lot of questions and go slow with Richmond Veterinary Hospital. This is based on two very troubling experiences. In both cases, we were given medicines to give our dog that had bad side effects and, to make it worse, the practitioner refused to take responsibility or address our complaints. The first occurrence happened about 4 years ago when our dog, a sweet Boston Terrier boy, had some irritation in his eyes. The vet at RVH prescribed a medication to help. Within a few days, the color in our dog's muzzle - snout and lips - faded from black to red. When we alerted the vet, he said, essentially, "that shouldn't happen." Though we could see a clear correlation between the loss of pigment in our dog's muzzle and the medicine, the vet claimed these were unrelated. The Internet is, of course, a far cry from "reliable sources," but we did find multiple claims on the Internet that the medicine we were given are known to cause loss of pigment in dogs. That the vet didn't know this, didn't research it and didn't give it any acknowledgment made us vow not to return to him. However, a few years later, and after a neighbor claimed to have had good experiences at RVH (to give both sides), we took our dog back when he had irritation in his right ear. The vet gave us a wash and an antibiotic. Once again, days after administering the antibiotic, our dog suffered, this time with hearing loss. He stopped responding to calls, even for dinner. Usually reactive to other dogs and barking noises, he no longer heard anything. Once again, articles on the Internet said that the medicine we were given can cause deafness in dogs. Once again, the vet either didn't know this or chose not to warn us that it was a possibility. He was unsympathetic and suggested we go to an audiologist. I don't recall if he apologized; if so, it didn't register. He didn't respond with any sympathy to my distraught family. We had to find out - again on the Internet - that the hearing loss may pass. Note to dog lovers: the hearing loss seems to be passing slowly. We hope that our dog's hearing will return to normal. And also note: this vet has twice now given us medicine that caused problems for our dog. He wasn't willing to acknowledge or sufficiently address this either time. Neither time came with a warning about possible side effects. He showed very little ability to sympathize or console us in our worry. Maybe that's just not his style. This time, our vow not to return will stick. I want to say that I'm sure others have had fine service here, and I hope that most people get great care for their pets here or anywhere they go. But based on my own experience, I would never send a friend to Richmond Veterinary Hospital. read more

Snip snip surgery sans sutures for my little Bassy (!!!!)----virile turned into sterile with just a little cut here, and a little bit there. First time customer/client/mother of patient... take it as you will. No "We see that this is your first time here... welcome!"...nothing of the sort. Was not impressed by the lack of warmth and customer service here. Also, though I am versed, nothing to explain the procedure or round of vaccinations that my kitten would receive. The Korean vet... what's his name.. Dr Han, if I recall correctly. He def rubbed me the wrong way....when discussing that ketamine was going to be used, I asked him about post-operative pain... he mockingly made a comment re: those who are concerned about "pain"---not missing a beat, I told him... I was an ICU nurse. No comment Uh yeah... didja just make a bit of a fool of thyself? $ are fair...place is seriously, seriously dated. Parking "lot" affords like 3 cars. read more

When Dr. Han owned this clinic, it was exceptional in light of the prices he charged. I was willing to deal with the often nasty front desk/office manager because Dr. Han knew his stuff better than any other vet I'd taken my pets to in the east bay, and his prices were substantially below average. However, when he was transitioning to retirement and had brought in Dr. Kwon, I brought in my young dog who had developed a horrible swelling in her eye within moments. We'd already been to the emergency vet, and they assumed she had a foxtail behind her eyeball. When the foxtail theory couldn't be substantiated by the emergency vet, I was not willing to submit my dog to exploratory surgery for thousands of dollars, particularly when the symptoms were bizarre. I took her to Richmond Vet for a second opinion. That was a waste a money. Dr. Kwon looked at my dog for a few minutes, decided there was no foxtail, and prescribed an antimicrobial ointment. At this point my dog's eye was swollen just about shut and enormous. I questioned Dr. Kwon on this, and he had no good answer. At that point I knew I would not be going back. But I tried the ointment, which had zero affect. I later figured out that my dog was likely having an allergic reaction to something, as that night I actually witnessed the swelling rapidly dissipate in the first eye as her other eye swelled up just as big. All within a matter of a couple hours. It was bizarre. At that point I just got her in my car and drove to UC Davis Emergency. They initially thought I must've been mistaken that the other eye had been swollen until they got her records. What UC Davis and an MRI did confirm was that there was no foxtail and no infection. An MRI and lots of $$ later provided zero explanation. She ended up on steroids for weeks. When the swelling reappeared some time later, I gave her steroids again, and changed her diet. The swelling never came back. And we never went back to Richmond Veterinary hospital. Dr. Han would never have sent my dog home in that state with nothing but useless ointment. At the very least he would have told us to go to UC Davis or another specialty emergency clinic right away. read more

As I write this review I am fuming. I've taken my dog there for about 5 years. I started with Dr.Han who retired. Dr. Kwon took over. Things have gotten out of hand. Now, I'm done. He doesn't even fully examine her. Doesn't look in her eyes, teeth or ears, but charges $76 for a few minute visit to tell me my dog is fat. I already know that. I brought her there recently when she started peeing a lot, then in the house missing the pee pad and twice on my bed which was a first. I figured she had an infection. After $450 spent to find out she had an infection. I was given meds for a 14 day period. He wanted me to have an additional 14 days. I said that let's see if she still needs them after the first course. She finished the pills and the next day peed again. I called the office and was pretty much got an attitude of a I told you so. So rather than give me an additional course for $64 I found out he wanted to do a culture to determine the actual problem to the tune of another $76 office visit plus around $250 for the culture. I agreed but than regretted it. Tomorrow, the day of the appointment, I will cancel it. Turns out she stopped peeing in the house since. This is what really makes me angry. When I went to pick her up the staff presented me with a $750 invoice. I told them I didn't agree to anything more than the $450, so why was it $300 more? Besides, I should have been called for the extra costs, and for what? I met with the vet and complained. He told that he thinks she has Cushing disease, because the panting, hiding under the chair and has a big belly. Well, duh, she's panting and hiding because she's scared. I did not agree to do any more tests. What did they expect that I was just going to hand over my credit card and pay $750 with no explanation? I read a recommendation for Dr. Han at the Richmond Veterinary Clinic and felt compelled to write this: My cat was first found some years back in a small cage along with 4 or 5 other cats, in the back of the The Richmond Veterinary Clinic(all these cats were rescued) by a kind person who had been paying to board a rescue dog there. When she asked Dr. Han why they were there, he said that the clinic was keeping them as a favor for their "owner" who couldn't keep them, that they'd had them there for approximately two years, and that they had looked for homes for them but were unsuccessful. However, Stevie, as I named him, was skeletal, dehydrated and frightened when he was brought to me, as were the other cats rescued. He had trouble walking and his mouth was full of infected teeth which needed to be pulled. The people at the Richmond veterinary Clinic could not even tell me if his shots were up to date and refused to answer any of my questions. I believe that the cats were used for blood transfusions although no one at the clinic would tell me anything. After his rescue, with constant love, reassurance and good health care from a decent clinic, Stevie became the wonderful sweet little guy he was always meant to be. The staff and doctors who were at the Richmond Vet Hospital at that time will likely never pay for their cruelty. They should at least be made to answer for it. They barely gave a second thought about our cat's pain or the fact that he regressed within 12 hours after they saw him. They seem to want to take in as many pets as possible and spend as little time as they can with the actual care of the animal. While as an owner you need to always be your pet's advocate and voice, you shouldn't have to convince your vet to actually give a crap. Don't waste your time. Just find a new vet who will truly care if your animal is in pain, or will live or die from their care. read more

I took my chihuahua mix to Dr Han for many years. Then I took my cat to Dr Kwon for a few more until she passed and I moved out of the neighborhood. I find the service and the prices just as competitive as they've ever been. It's not a perfect place, but I feel like they're honest and I wish them well. Most of the front desk staff are nice but there is one woman that seems like she hates her job and doesn't have patience for people. I hope she finds happiness somewhere, lol.
