Went to Antler Cafe today with my 2 sons for lunch. They ordered their meal along with a domestic beer for each of them. The waitress said these beers would be 3 bucks a piece for domestic so thats what they ordered. However, when the bill came each beer was $6.25. She said the beers ordered were not domestic beer and it came at a higher price. The beers were Texas Lager beers so nothing special or imported about them. They should have been 3 bucks as we were told... NOT COOL. So 3 beers cost us around $20 bucks with tax. It was a little awkward arguing about being overcharged but my son decided to pay the full amount anyway out of the kindness of his heart. I wouldn't have paid that much. The restaurant is located in Bulverde. There is ample parking in the front and side of the restaurant. You'll see chickens running around waiting to be fed but don't feed them. There is a playground for kids. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating. There are misting fans outdoor to keep you cool in the summer. The portions are HUGE and the price is affordable! I love how much you can get for less than $15. I was able to share my Large Chicken Fried Steak with my daughter and we still have leftovers to bring home. They have unique delicacies like frog legs and liver and onions. My husband and daughter enjoyed them. A family of 4 spend less than $50 not including tip. That is a great deal for a family. We've been hearing about the Antler Café for a while and finally had the chance to try it. We started with a couple of signature cocktails that had fun names, though they turned out to be pretty standard drinks. For an appetizer, we ordered the Chips and Queso--the queso was actually quite good. For the main course, I went with the Grilled Calf Liver and Onions. While not everyone's favorite dish, I thought it was well-seasoned and cooked just right. The green beans and mashed potatoes were fresh and homemade, though they didn't really stand out. Overall, I'm glad we finally checked this place off our list. It's a bit of a drive for us, so I wouldn't go out of my way to return, but if I were in the area again, I'd happily stop in. read more

I had stepped inside the restaurant and was greeted by a hostess. She asked if I wanted to be sat at the bar or a table. I said table and she got me a table in an awful part of the place near the bar and behind the wall apart from the other diners. The table had some clutter and I asked if the table was clean. The hostess removed the clutter and cleaned the table. I was then given a menu to decide what I wanted to order. They don't have a lot of items and their menu is limited. But I had already decided what I wanted. The waitress took her sweet time getting to my table and asked me what I wanted to drink. The waitress, Emily,was not friendly and seemed to be in a hurry. I don't know if shes having a bad day but still that's no excuse. I had ordered a water then placed my food order, a large chicken fried steak with green beans and creamed corn. Then Emily left then returned with the water then took off again. Later my order was brought to me by a food runner who didn't know what was going on and seemed confused when she asked me if I had ordered the chicken fried steak. I told her I did. The presentation was subpar regarding the chicken fried steak. I had requested a large but it didn't look like I had expected. It also arrived with the green beans and creamed corn,both were good, and a slice of Texas toast that looked like the kind served at Raising Canes. The toast was lukewarm. The chicken fried steak was goof and none of the breading fell off nor did it contain too much breading like I've has at other places. I had noticed a couple get seated at the table I'm front of where I was seated. I also noticed they had the same waitress Emily but she's more friendlier towards them and that pissed me off. I had finished my meal. Emily refilled my water once. Then my glass was empty and she sent me my tab like she had wanted me out of there and couldn't wait for me to leave. So I paid and got the hell out of there. So to sum it all up, the food was mediocre and didn't live up to my expectations and the service needed major improvement. I'm not sure if I'll return to Richter's Antler Cafe again. Maybe I will sometime in the future once construction on Hwy 46 finishes. Always the same quality and friendly service- a down home kinda place with wood floors and deer heads on the wall, some TVs, a full bar, outdoor play yard for kids- a local favorite. It's all good. We arrived before 11 AM and there were already people waiting. I like that for small parties they just tell you to sit anywhere you like. Miranda helped get us a large table for our group. They have really expanded the dining area to handle the crowds, but it still has the country charm. There are turkeys and chickens that roam the back. I asked for a fresh turkey sandwich and they told me that's not on the menu. The menu is small, but they have a lot of sides. Please no hate mail. This is country comfort food and the prices are affordable. I spent $64 for 4 adults and were were all full and satisfied. We had a large party of 12 including three kids and Jasmin did a great job as our waitress. You can tell they work as a team as they all pitched in to help, along with the manager making sure we had what we needed. I ordered the fried chicken breast and it was great. Nicely breaded and the cream gravy was good. Their green beans are fresh and cooked with ham. The jalapeno mac and cheese was flavorful, but could have used some time in the broiler with some crusty cheese on top. The Texas toast was so good. Their iced tea is really strong and not watered down like so many other restaurants. My wife had the liver and onions. Not what I like, but she gets it every time and raves about it. We waited till after the lunch rush to dine here. We both ordered the smaller version of their chicken fried steak! It was delicious and enough for two! We also enjoyed the side dishes even though they were just lukewarm. Hence the 4 stars. I think they are so busy they prepare the sides and then wait for the just cooked to order steak. It WAS hot! Lol. The server we had was very friendly and prompt! It appears they help each other knocking out getting the orders to the customers. It was definitely a very Texan type experience with lots of people doing business while enjoying their lunches. The prices are reasonable given today's inflationary pressures and keeping the quality up to standards. We even saw several chicken's from a neighbor making themselves at home inside getting more scraps than a good Texas chicken deserves! I love richters antlers cafe unfortunately due to inflation prices have gone up a little bit compared to a few years ago. The portions are huge so it is worth it. Honestly everything here is good just last time I went maybe because it was too busy, the quality of the food wasn't the same which is the first time that had happened to us so maybe it was just that day but it made me not wanna go back and I haven't been back since then. Nice cozy place that serves homestyle southern cooking. Plates are big and filled with yumminess. They have indoors and outdoor area with a huge playground where kids can be kids...shaded area with bug trees. If you don't mind eating around hungry chickens that might ask you for your fried chicken, you should be good. If you eat on the deck, don't drop your credit card... that would be bad. Good lord!! That is the best chicken fried steak (CFS) I have tasted in decades: huge, savory, beefy, tender without gristly bits, and with a crispy coating that stays stuck to the meat as it should, even after being smothered with cream gravy. We liked all the food we had, the service was awesome, the classic country playlist with Merle, both Georges, and Clint was perfect, and the free-range chickens were a hoot! If you are looking for a "peak Texas" comfort food experience, this is it. I can't believe it took me 2 years of Canyon Lake living to finally gettin' round to checking out Richter's Antler Cafe, but I'm glad we took advantage of the perfect Hill Country springtime to do it. From our spot on the northside, we have about an equidistant trip whether we travel around the east or west side of the lake, so we decided to make a full circle in our scenic round-trip. Blue skies and 70 degree temps made for a lovely drive. Upon driving in for Saturday late lunch, we found a nicely shaded parking spot right out front, facing 46. The place was busy but not overwhelmingly crowded for lunch on a beautiful weekend. The quoted wait time was 25-35 minutes, but we were in no hurry and went out to the shaded front deck to peruse the menu and await a text notification about our table. There was no way to order a drink while we waited, something I'd love to see them offer in the future. We started off our leisurely porch-dining meal with a perfectly dressed, ice-cold Dos XX lager. The adult bevs menu is on a laminated card held by the waiters, so just ask if you don't see it at first. There is a selection of domestic & Mexican beer plus 3 or 4 wine options. For choosing the meal, we first observed what other diners were eating and everything looked very good with generous portions, especially the chicken-fried options, burgers, and enchiladas. My date ordered the large (covers the entire plate) CFS with traditional sides of mashed potatoes and bacony green beans, while I went with the fried catfish plate and similar sides and the recommended homemade tartar sauce. The teen had, you guessed it, chicken tenders. All of our food was excellent and the prices were really too low for this amount of food. With our 3 huge meals and 3 beverages, the total bill was $44 including tax before tip. Note that the listed menu prices on their website have not been updated since COVID hit, so add $1-2 to most food items there if you are looking before you get the physical menu on site. Chickens are roaming around everywhere outside, including in the outdoor dining area. It's unsanitary, I suppose, but I have to admit I loved watching them do their weird little pea-brained chicken behaviors, and from the looks of the other diners, especially the kids, I was not alone. There was even a mama hen with 3 little chicks following her around - adorbs! Just watch where you are stepping and certainly do not put anything important (like your purse or diaper bag) on the floor. Oh, and in case it wasn't obvious, this is not the place for vegetarians but your hunting-obsessed brother-in-law will love it. The "antler" in the name refers to the infinite numbers of shed deer antlers adorning the ceiling of the main dining room, in addition to the numerous taxidermied trophies on the walls. read more

Haven't been to Antler's cafe since it was on 281 and 46. The food was better now than it was back then. Just delicious and filling. Watching full plates go by as we were sat just made me drool. They do have a nice patio with lots of shade, fans and misters that would likely have made it bearable but we decided to wait. Our server was great, very attentive. The food was great. I had the Tex Mex enchiladas which I was apprehensive about since this is not a traditional Tex Mex place but they were awesome. Back then, there wasn't many restaurants to chose from. The original location burned down, so Antler's relocated here. So glad they did. It's even worth the drive from SA, that's how good this comfort food is. Although the area has grown and there are many more choices around... Antler's Cafe is a fantastic choice to satisfy your cravings. Yes, it does get crowded so play to wait during peak times. They have a large dining room plus a good size patio with a well run kitchen which keeps the tables turning over pretty quickly. So of course, I've had CFS from all over in my many years... I have been eating here for 10 years and my recent visit wasn't even close to average. I ordered fried mushrooms and the batter was different and really crunchy. The ribeye tasted like it was cooked and then sat in water to be juicy. More water than juice came out of it. All the food was warm or cold. I'm not sure that I've ever had anything but their chicken fried steak, but I never regret staying with the CFS. I topped the plate off with fried okra and delicious mashed potatoes. We went yesterday and again I ask What Happened? Chicken fried steak was bland no flavor was also tough and it had dramatically shrunk. Perfectly seasoned, crunchy outside, moist inside chicken fried steak and that gravy is so good, even cardboard would taste amazing dipped in it. Loved their fried catfish as well. Lightly battered, freshly cooked..,,yumm! For our sides, we had fried okra, jalapeño Mac n cheese, salad and green beans. Yup, I dipped the okra in the gravy and it was gooooood! Not a Mac n cheese person but wanted to try and take some home for my kiddo. It had a little bite but we both liked it. The green beans were fresh and crunchy but it strangely came with way too much limp bacon. They have huge servings, so keep that in mind. I gladly took half of my meal home. We were seated at the patio.They have heaters and fans so it's comfortable, be it summer or winter. We liked it. Be warned though that chickens roam free, so if that is not your thing, request for an inside table. Can't complain about the service either. Everyone was super sweet and helpful. We've been eating at this place for 30 years..... and Once again they've knocked it out of the park. I got the catfish this time and ooo boy was it good. The fried mushrooms were AWESOME as usual and the tea is always on point. The service was awesome we never felt like we needed anything from our server it was perfect. The place was busy and the wait for 2 on the patio was about 30 minutes. I think the real winner was the ranch! They bring it out in a huge bottle lol and it was amazing! Almost had a hint of tarter sauce vibe... delicious!
