I had pork nachos. The pork tasted like it was made in a Crock-Pot and the chips were stale.

Beware!! Wouldn't eat there. Poor catering. They messed up numerous things agreed upon and did not make it right.

One of my favorite spots in town. This seemingly abandoned decommissioned former gas station/…read moregarage puts out some solid BBQ. It's nothing to look at, if you drove past you'll likely question the legitimacy of my review. Upon entering you'll likely question your decision to stop. The interior is not nice. This place is an absolute dive. Watch where you step a half a dozen tables crammed in a tiny dining area. They serve BBQ, burgers sandwiches and they have a meat and 3 lunch for 6.99. A very good value on good quality food. One of my coworkers was brave enough to go with me today. The others were too afraid based on the appearance of the facility. I had the half smoked chicken with "hot" white sauce, okra, blackeyed peas and greens. It was fantastic. The smoked chicken here is moist and fall off the bone tender with a beautifully smoked skin. It's lightly based in a red sauce and accompanied by a white sauce hot or regular. If hot is an option I generally go with it. The sides were quite good as well. The okra was freshly prepared and crispy, the greens were well seasoned and the peas were as good if not slightly better than the greens. My coworker got the grilled chicken tenders with macaroni salad, green beans and something else. He enjoyed his meal as well. I prefer this place to a more popular meat and 3 in town. Family owned and operated. Apparently the owner has a stable of young collegiate baseball players as there is a rather large display paying homage to his children and their accomplishments to the left of the counter where you order. The owner and a patron were discussing their respective accomplishments and baseball careers next to us and it was hard not to hear. I like that. It's a small dive but he knew everyone that walked in the door with exception to us out of towners. It's a must stop at least once for me whenever I'm in town.

But we decided to eat inside and the owners came and chatted with us and even offered us free brownies- they were out of this world delicious. We ordered a BBQ plate(meat & 3). I got smoked turkey, fried okra, collard greens, & green beans. The turkey had a great smoked flavor and the portion was nice size. The vegetables were good-could have used a little more seasoning. Their BBQ sauces were really good. They are famous for their chicken salad. We bought a pint and ate it when we got home. It was very good. Perfect Southern Chicken Salad. If you are on your way to Dismals Canyon, you should stop in for lunch.

It's held annually in October and is such a lovely drive up to Lynchburg! Gary N did a great job of accurately capturing the "feel" of the event in his numerous photos posted here! There are a lot of vendors set up for this event selling eats, t-shirts, and more. There's a large, covered pavilion where the judging happens, and spectators can watch from bleachers. I don't recall the number of judges but I do recall at least one local "celebrity" newscaster among the judges. The Styrofoam containers for judging are deftly prepared and rushed to the judging area with immense intensity - it really is something to watch, and the "food runner" will scream at you to "get out of the way" if they need to! Others referenced free samples, which wasn't the case on our visit, except for the international area. No guests/visitors get samples of the competition BBQ to my knowledge. If you want lunch, you'll need to get something from the vendors. However, the international area competitors did offer us ample samples of their BBQ. They were all very friendly, too! The competition area is fairly spread out, so wear comfortable shoes and the entryway is sloped, so there's that. It's free as far as I know, and everyone should attend at least one championship BBQ competition - the Jack Daniels event is a well-run, fun one to attend.

Coming from Chattanooga area we chose to take the scenic drive down the old highway from Monteagle through Sewanee. As you arrive into town you can start seeing the smoke and smelling the BBQ. This is a very small town but everyone seems to be selling parking. $5-$10 mostly. We parked very close to downtown. The square is fully covered with tents and vendors as you walk in, live country music is playing. All the downtown shops are open and plenty to explore and see in the town. However, food is in our mind and we continue down to the food tents and competition area. Lots of free samples, but I did not see any from the competitors which was a disappointment. But still plenty to see and try. They also have food instructions, vendor demos, Etc I do wish they would move this so it is not the same weekend as Tennessee vs Alabama. We left early to catch the game as I am sure many do. At the least put a big screen up for the crowd. Lynchburg is a great small town and one you should visit. Jack Daniels is a short walk and free tour. Great day.
