    a bowl of barbecue sauce
    Gary D.

I was passing through a month or so ago, needed gas and stopped at Rick's. The allure of the BBQ captured me, so, although I was not hungry, I decided to try some. I saw that they sold it by the pound, but I was not sure if that was the minimum or not. So, I asked the young girl at the register if I could buy a quarter of a pound of BBQ. She told me that I could not, as the minimum serving they sold was four ounces. Nothing I was able to do could persuade her to sell me that quarter pound I wanted, so I went with the four ounces. It was OK, but the meat didn't have much flavor - I think a better rub would have helped. The hot BBQ sauce seemed to be mostly Texas Peter or something similar. I may just be spoiled by the BBQ joints here in Memphis.

Next door is the Sunrise Bakery and across the street is the KFC. As soon as I arrived with my date, who was blind, our waitress, Sarah, didn't miss a beat and as she seated us asked if she can bring a "plate with walls." Neither of us knew what she was talking about and I'm not sure how we answered, but she came back with a large dinner plate which had high sides on it. It was similar to a casserole dish. She said that she has a blind friend and he finds a plate like this easier to use. It was one of the kindest acts either of us had experienced in a very long time. One of the most important things to say about *any* buffet is how fresh the food is. While we were there, cooks brought out freshly-cooked salmon not only once, but twice. That says a lot. The food selection was good, though not very extensive, but it's a very small restaurant. We noticed that while the kitchen was in the rear, there was also a cook preparing some food in the dining room on a hibachi grill. That's a nice touch. While the storefront is not particularly appealing, the inside is lovely, though the wallpaper and artwork could use some updating. That's okay, though... the important thing here is the excellence of the food; it is... and so are the people of this city. As we were ready to leave, our bill was brought to us that said one of the patrons had already paid for our dinner. That was incredibly kind, and a kindness that I will certainly pay forward. If you're traveling through Lawrenceburg, stop by the Chinese Oriental Buffet. You won't be disappointed.

The park, itself, is gorgeous and I will return when I have more time to explore. The restaurant far exceeded my expectations. Aside from the picturesque, majestic riverfront views, the staff was exceedingly friendly and courteous. The food is primarily buffet style dining, but it is not cafeteria food. The fried chicken is exceptional. The mashed potatoes divine. The navy beans served with fatback is the definition of southern cultural food. The peach cobbler was great, and I also enjoyed a wonderful glass of Tennessee Cynthiana red wine with my meal, distilled from one of the oldest grape varieties in a North America. It's flavor was wild and enjoyable, just like the scenery in the park. I have dined at far more expensive and exclusive establishments, but few such humble places, such as this warrant five stars. I think Crockett would feel at home here and do I give a whole-hearted 5/5.
