After my second spoonful, I noticed pieces of meat in it. When I called the restaurant, they explained that they normally remove the meat from the regular batch when a customer requests a vegetarian version, rather than preparing a separate vegetarian soup. First of all the food aren't as greasy as other places. Never heard of Dai Chin chicken so I had to try it. It may be general tso or similar. They ran out so I had to wait two minutes but it was freshly cooked. It had a crunchy coating that paired well with the sweet and semi-spicy sauce and held well. It took 30 minutes to get home and it was still slightly crunchy but yet slightly tough. So best to eat it right away. The house special sparerib was slightly sweet and pork was tender. The eggplant and tofu was delightful. Saucy and not too spicy. Green beans and chicken was good too. Green beans cooked soft just how I like them. If you like yours "snappy" it's not for you. I would say the fried rice needs some work, either soy sauce or salt. That's where the entrees come in I suppose when you're eating it with fried rice. They compliment each other. The chow mein was average. Not good, not bad. I would get the garlic noodles instead. I will be back to try their other options. Albeit a drive but worth it. My most recent visit the portions were noticeably smaller which is understandable. My friend ordered the chow mein and had to throw it away. Visually speaking it was "HELL NO," because I can tell it was bland and sitting on the steam table for awhile. It was during lunch time so not sure why it was already so dried out. She purchase a medium and it was $15. I really felt bad because there were no vegetarian options and it was just awful looking. I have no idea why I end up feeling that way, since that's kind of the point of writing these, but, if it ends up happening in this particular case, I'll know EXACTLY why I'm going to be feeling sheepish. For our small little get together, one of my relatives let us know ahead of time that she was going to order a bunch of party trays for us from Rickshaw Corner. Personally, I had never even heard of this place, let alone whether or not the food was good, but I was excited to check them out after she mentioned how she has been ordering from here for years. A solid endorsement in and of itself, but especially so since she doesn't even live close by. Plus, after checking out their menu and the photos of their Chinese deli staples, their Beef & Broccoli, Tofu & Eggplant, Chow Mein, and Dai Chin Chicken, in particular, looked so promising! Sadly, emphasis on "looked"... -- DAI CHIN CHICKEN Presumably their most popular dish and it's easy to see why. Not only did nearly every piece look pretty big, but they were crispy and coated with a gooey, sweet & spicy sauce. That being said, most of the pieces were actually just puffed up, as they were made up of almost all batter. -- BEEF & BROCCOLI This looked the part, but the taste of it fell short. On the plus side, the broccoli seemed pretty fresh and the beef wasn't tough/chewy. On the other, the ratio of beef to broccoli was skewed to the latter and this tasted rather bland (there was almost no sauce/gravy). -- CHICKEN CHOW MEIN While I appreciate that the noodles had a really nice chew and weren't especially greasy, this was a huge bummer. For one, this felt super light on chicken, but, much like with the Beef & Broccoli, this was almost tasteless. -- SALT & PEPPER SPARERIBS This was kind of a mixed bag. Despite how the pieces weren't all that big, the spareribs were cooked really well and I was impressed that these weren't at all oily. However, I wish this had a bit more salt and pepper on it (or more fried garlic and/or jalapenos). -- FRIED TOFU & VEGETABLES Meh. Although the pieces of fried tofu were actually pretty decent (crispy on the outside, soft on the inside), this was underwhelming. In an unsurprising twist, the main problem was that the vegetables didn't taste like they had been seasoned in any way. -- VEGETABLE FRIED RICE To be honest, I couldn't find anything redeeming about this (there was a decent amount of vegetables?). The grains of rice were hard and dry, the rice looked pale, and, keeping up with the theme, this was short on flavor. Well, except the taste of the rice being overcooked. The one thing about the food that I will note is that, based on some of the more recent reviews from my fellow Yelpers, Rickshaw Corner may have changed owners and/or chefs recently. Obviously I can't say if that's the case or not, but I kind of hope it is, as it might explain why what we ate wasn't that great (even she mentioned the food didn't taste the same as the last time she had it). Either that or perhaps they got the proportions of everything wrong as they worked to get so many trays prepared. Regardless, I can't see myself coming back. Rickshaw Corner Restaurant, a mom and pop version of a Panda Express at the corner of the Edgewater Place shopping center, is lowkey one of the best value, cheapest meals you can get in the bay area. They pack every takeout container to the brim with food no matter who you are. Hella homies be going here for some grub at all times of the day - normal people, working people, people who just want some greasy fried Chinese American food. My go-to order is the dai chin chicken with fried rice. Lunch pricing until 4pm is only a dollar less, so it doesn't really matter what time you come, as it's a fantastic deal anyways and definitely feeds two people, or will last for more than one meal. You have a choice between chow mein, fried rice, steamed rice, or garlic noodles for a dollar extra. I wish the garlic noodles were better - it's pretty much the same as the chow mein, except stir fried with garlic which didn't make too much of a flavor difference. The other entree items I've tried were alright, but definitely not as good as the dai chin chicken, which is just like orange chicken with a sweet chili kick. I'm not fond of their salt & pepper items, unfortunately, and the chicken salad was bland, and their bbq pork bun was dry with sparse filling. Their consistency on protein to fried batter ratio may vary, but the taste is still there.
