2.5 stars rounded up to 3 It's an open kitchen dining with less than authentic Chinese cuisine. Most of the dishes are average at best. Quantity is bountiful though. Let's start with the order of the food being served. Soup came last... noodles came in 2nd ... anyways. Food is edible but more like Panda Express quality. If this were a take out or fast food restaurant, this can be a 4+ star restaurant. Service is friendly though. Plus, its restaurant announcements are pretty stuck up... although I don't have small ones dining with us. But the restaurant made sure you read how they feel about children in their restaurant. Will not be back.

This is not my usual Chinese restaurant go to, but it was a pretty decent find. My mom orders from this restaurant every now and again. We ordered the Mapo tofu and cilantro beef. The tofu was served in a sweet chili, thin sauce, which packed plenty of flavor with with each bite. It was delicious. I had more mixed feelings about the cilantro beef. If you like a lot of flavor and moderate spice, then you will love this dish. I can handle mild to moderate spiciness, but I felt that this dish had way too much going on. It was just a lot of contradictory flavors, all saturated in spiciness, that was more painful than pleasant. However, my mom loved the cilantro beef, and I have to admit, it went really well with white rice.

Wow, I was so impressed by the taste and timeliness of the food here! I only came for the Amex $50 resy deal, which is great btw, but I was very pleasantly surprised at the great portions and even prices of the menu. This restaurant gets food out FAST and the food is delicious. I loved both of my dishes, the beef and celery and eggplant minced pork noodles. These Chinese dishes are either super authentic that I don't recognize them or they're a non "mainstream" type of Chinese cuisine. Either way I look forward to going back again really soon!

This Chinese restaurant is fantastic. I went because it is adjacent to the hotel at which I was staying, so the convenience was unbeatable. I was with a friend, so we got plenty of food to try. We got the General Tso's chicken and it was the very best I have had. We also got the cilantro beef (pictured) and it was fantastic. The green onion pancakes were very thick, and comes with a spicy pork topping to add to the layers. Every bite of these dishes was a delight. Service was great. This place has a no tipping policy because they automatically add a 18% gratuity to every dine-in meal, or if you take it out, a 7% gratuity. I don't particularly like this setup, but the service was good enough to warrant this 18%. Overall, it was pretty fantastic, so I went back a second time for more.

I noticed this place had great reviews, so I decided to stop by and give their thick green onion pancake a try. They have a no-tipping policy; if you order takeout, there's a 7% charge, and dine-in customers are charged 18%. I chose takeout, and my total came to about $17. It's a bit on the pricey side for just bread and green onions. It took about 10 minutes for them to prepare it. The verdict? The bread was warm and inviting, but unfortunately, it was a bit soggy. It was quite dense, lightly salted, and came with two cups of slightly spicy ground beef. It didn't quite taste authentic to me, and honestly, it felt overpriced--probably because it's located in a lovely neighborhood. I probably wouldn't order it again.

The food here is decent, not too oily or salty. Good balance and a wide selection of items. My biggest gripe about this place is the advertising of no tip and then charging 18% service charge and tax on top of the service charge. Additionally the shaming of parents with young kids is ridiculous. Once you scan the QR code for food, you get these advisories about how parents have been charged for things their kids break in the restaurant. I understand the credit card machine is costly but definitely not the white tea cups.

My fiancé and I came on Saturday around 6:30 and were seated right away. The service was great and attentive! We got the same items as the first time we visited, green onion pancake, godfathers noodles, and zha jiang mian. We liked them all but the zha jiang mian and green onion pancake were my favorite, and my fiancé liked the godfather noodles the best. The portions are a good large size, so we had leftovers of all 3. The person I assume is the owner noticed me struggling with trying to cut the pancake with a spoon and offered me a knife. The service and food were good and we'd definitely come back!

It's been 5 years since opening and they're only getting better. We ate here 3 times this week with the goal of not repeating a single dish and it just reinforced how unbelievably good every aspect of the menu is. Cilantro beef, mapo tofu, chili fried chicken, eggplant string bean, cilantro beef, hot and sour soup, chicken fried rice, general zwuh's, chang sha mian, mountains of godfather sauce, it just doesn't end. I genuinely have trouble understanding why folks are going to other chinese spots on the peninsula unless they're looking for really specific regional dishes not offered here (claypot, dim sum, etc).

First time dining in. tl;dr Online menu only, but you need to order with them. Automatic 18% gratuity. $3.50 for a cup of rice (enough for 2-3 people). Generous portions. Sautéed string beans: Really well made. Perfectly fried, soft, but still with nice texture. Would order again. Sesame chicken: Delicious! Wasn't expecting to like it this much, but the chicken was super tender, while the batter had a great texture. Would order again. Beijing Jajiangmian: I personally prefer the Korean sweeter version. This one is black bean forward. Hand pulled noodles are chewy. Quite saucy and wished there was a bit more meat. Pork tofu celery : Very standard Chinese taste profile. Tasty, but not standout.

was in Foster City checking out some things and found this wonderful spot next to Costco. My friend said they also have another location that we ate before so i thought why not lets go. So i forgot the names of the dishes haha but ill explain it i guess . Spicy mala fish. 5/5 Spicy beef vegetable 5/5 favorite Onion bread/pancake 5/5 favorite!! Soo good! Bak choy 5/5 delicious 3 people we had more than enough we couldn't even finish half of this. Big portions for sure! Waitress was amazing i wish i got her name she lovely and super attentive 5/5 Inside was really nice and cool love the decor nice open kitchen very clean Definitely coming back with more people to try more stuff lol

Across the street from Costco, not bad, but also meh. I thought it was funny that they say not to ask for chili sauce lol. They had quite a bit of a "rules" page before ordering. I get it, but also kinda weird. So that set the tone for the dining experience. Open dining space, kitchen is visible to the diners as well towards the back of the restaurant. The booth cushioned backings kept coming off, that was noticeable. Not a big deal, but also it's about the details. All in all things were good, but not great. I was also starving, so I was going to eat whatever. Beef burrito was alright. Green onion pancakes were soft and fluffy but I feel like I still prefer thin and a smidge crispy. Everything else was pretty standard. Honestly...I felt having some chili sauce would've been nice to have, but I guess you can't ask for that I didn't manage to get the kid's name who served us but he was attentive and polite, did a good job. All in all, would I crave this place? No. But if a friend wanted to go for a meal in the future, I wouldn't say no.

    Mapo Tofu
    Judy C.

I was excited when Chez Xue first opened and from the start, have always loved and will recommend the godfather noodles and the green onion pancakes. However, while the other food is solid, I haven't found anything else to be super memorable so far. The chili fried chicken lacks the pizzaz of chili fried chicken I've had at other places. The mapo tofu could use a little more flavor and spice. The space is clean and airy. Service is efficient enough and merits the 18% auto-gratuity that is put on the meal. Prices are a bit on the high side, but they have some lunch plates that might be ok for solo diners.

    green bean braised noodles
    Natalie L.

Dang, it was BUSY in here when I came even though it was a Wednesday. There was a ton of people coming in for a table all at once, and a crazy amount of takeout orders were also flying out of the kitchen. We still got our food in pretty good time! We ordered the fried tofu, which came smothered in a spicy sauce with mushrooms (and of course, went great on top of rice). The star for me was the braised green bean noodles, though. They were pretty savory but didn't get heavy on the palate, and I appreciated that the green beans were just the way I like it- very soft but still a tiny bit crunchy. Service was also excellent, especially from the server who told us he was new to the job! He checked up on everyone despite there being so many people. Overall impressed with this restaurant, and I'm glad we checked it out!

Do they use MSG? (Restaurants like this that do are generally not able to remove it by request, as it's in all their premade sauces)

Not sure but you could ask the kitchen to not add if there is a concern. Perhaps some of the sauces may have it prepared in it but they have many other dishes that it could be omitted from if you ask

What is the email address? I used to get their emails but don't anymore

You can call BBB them and ask to be put on the mailing list

Does this restaurant have any vegan options?

They have a vegan version of their Godfather noodles with impossible meat called Wendy's noodles. Other than that, I think you can ask for some of their vegetable and tofu dishes to be without meat.

The ambiance is a bit similar to a fast casual restaurant than that of a high end course meal and the service aligns with that. Bathrooms are in a bit of a sorry state and chairs are peeling at the edges. Service is a bit clumsy and rushed. No one asks for any food restrictions before the meal and it isn't asked when reservations are being made, so you'll have to actively speak up if you need this addressed. Dishes are only fully explained at the bar, if you sit at the standard tables you'll get a very basic dish explanation. The food is mostly Chinese Japanese fusion and some dishes knock it out of the park, like the chawanmushi which is fused with flavors of Chinese egg drop soup. Some really drop the ball, like the scallion noodles which were soggy and overly greasy, the oil was not properly infused with the green onion and so you just got mushy soggy plain oil flavored noodles. The course lacked consistency. Some dishes were incredible, some average, and some downright bad. There's a lack of consistency in the prep also, there were crab shells in the orange crab dish, there was a bad bitter uni in one of the chawanmushi, etc. I think the ambiance, service, and course doesn't add up to the $150 price tag. There's definitely potential but the lack of effort does affect the overall experience.

It sits right there near the Bay Trail--on the boardwalk side of Foster City--where you can see the bridge heading toward the East Bay. Back when I worked for a small IT consulting company, this was our go-to lunch spot. Big group? No problem. They have the space, the big round tables, and of course the lazy Susan right in the middle, which is exactly how it should be. The daily whiteboard specials were always worth a look, and the kitchen here knows how to handle heat. Real heat. Lots of chilies, lots of flavor. Over the four years I worked nearby, my tolerance for spicy food definitely leveled up thanks to this place. My absolute favorite dish here is their Chung Hwa Road potstickers. They take about 10 minutes to make, and they are massive--easily three or four times the size of a regular potsticker. They come out connected by that beautiful crispy lace, that spiderweb crust on the bottom that makes everyone at the table pause for a second before diving in. Dip those into their house sauce with black vinegar, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and soy... honestly, it's perfection. They also do kung pao chicken the traditional way--chicken, peanuts, chilies. No fillers, no nonsense. Just clean, bold flavor. I appreciate that. The snow pea shoots here are another favorite when they're in season. Expensive, yes--but once you know how much work goes into cleaning and prepping them, you understand why. Worth every penny. Same with the steamed whole fish. Market price, always fresh, usually topped with scallions, ginger, and chilies. Spoon that over a bowl of hot rice and you're set. Service runs like a well-oiled machine. Tea comes quickly--usually jasmine or chrysanthemum--and if you lift the lid slightly, someone will notice and refill it. It's one of those small traditional touches that tells you they know exactly what they're doing. They're also incredibly organized with takeout. Soups are sealed tight, everything packed carefully so nothing spills. You can tell they've done this a million times. I lived on the Peninsula for two decades, and this place stayed in my regular rotation the entire time. Now that I'm in Charlotte, it's one of those restaurants I genuinely miss. We just don't have Taiwanese food like this out here. So if you're nearby, go. Order the dumplings. Get something spicy. Sit around the table with friends and take your time. And when you eat a potsticker, think of me--because life is too short not to eat well.
