This is one of the best pizzas in town, certainly the best NY-style. In other words unless you're lumping in smaller Neapolitan style pies, which I count as a different category, I crown Ricky's the best in Durham. They really have their cheese and sauce flavors dialed in, which I gather is a difficult thing to get right. The crust is awesome too -- I always eat the "pizza bones," which I often leave behind at other places. It really does remind me of the pizzas I had when I lived in NYC, and you can't say that about many joints here in Durham. All the toppings are top-notch, too, especially the sausage. We also enjoy the wings, and they definitely use a real fryer instead of baking them. We order a lot for delivery, and sometimes you have to be patient. But that's understandable for a small place, and they're usually up front if they're running a wait time. Give it a try! read more

I have tried to put in a phone order for delivery on three separate occasions. Each time, the phone wasn't answered during normal business hours, so I gave up on making a phone order. It's only a two mile drive, but when I drove there, (thinking that, as a New Yorker, I'd still like to have some real NY pizza), they had a huge truck with their name plastered all over it, taking up several prime customer parking spots. Ahh Ricky's New York Pizza. It's a nice place. The interior is clean, the dining area is nice and the service desk is well presented. The menu at the front is large enough for any vision disabled person to read without any glasses or contacts! I feel like I'm standing in an IMAX theater when I'm looking at that menu. Seriously have to turn my head left to right to read it. Anyways, they have a nice selection, from Pizza's to Stromboli's to Garlic Bread to Stir Fry-- Wait, what the? Did I just say that? Yes, yes I did. Normally if a themed restaurant reaches outside of their culinary theme, they're in dire straits and they're trying to cater to as much as possible. That's a dangerous situation, and normally leaves their food to be lacking. However, that's not the case for Ricky's New York Pizza. Although I didn't try their hand at asian cuisine, I did have their pizza's and calzones. Those, I can speak for. The pizza is better than average. It's the good amount of grease, the crust is crisp and thin but not too thin. The crusts on the pizza (around the edge) are great. I swear they were using honey to flavor them on my first visit, but now, it tastes above average. What was wrong with me that day? Anyways... The calzones are a good size (about the size of half a dinner plate) and you'll be fed. But they're below average. Quite bland actually. My wife ordered feta cheese and banana peppers in her calzone. She only tasted these fillings 3 or 4 times throughout the meal. Other than that, I fully appreciate the great customer service. HOWEVER, this is not a family restaurant after hours. If you're okay with the TV being turned all the way up for the entire staff to listen to Chris Rock do stand up about some offensive, non dinner table subjects, then by all means come right in and enjoy the comedy house. If you're there for a nice pizza place experience for all ages, then you might want to reconsider this venue. read more

My first and most likely, final 5 star review for a pizza place. I would give it 6, if I could. I absolutely love Ricky's. By far, the tastiest New York pizza I've ever had. The crust is crisp on the outside, soft on the inside. The sauce is perfect. I love that it's just good quality tomatoes blended up with a little something. That's what pizza sauce should be. The cheese is always thick and tasty. The ricotta, OH, the ricottta!!!! I would cut off my left leg for a slice of their Lasagna pizza. The pizza consists of mozzarella, ricotta, ground beef and sauce. They put the beef on first, then a very generous helping of cheese, followed by dollops of sauce and seasoned ricotta. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Pizza with BBQ wings. First, My order was wrong I received BBQ Chicken Pizza. They kindly delivered the correct pizza promptly. I was informed I can keep the first pie and that "it's delicious"... WRONG. It was dry and over priced for the size. There was barely any chicken on the pizza so much so that you couldn't even tell it was a specialty pizza. Second, It's marked as a medium size pizza but really it's personal size. $15 for a medium pie, I was expecting something at least decent. They call themselves "NY Pizza".. I am originally from NY and even this is overpriced for NY pizza and it's NOTHING like true NY pizza. The wings were pretty decent but nothing special. All in all I will just say this.. they let us keep the first pie and even though they delivered the second pie.. we didn't eat it. The pizza was so bad that we didn't even want the free food. Umm... your website shows a map with my address clearly within delivery zone, you accepted the online order, you waited until the time it was supposed to be delivered to call and ask (delivery estimate was 80 minutes). They did deliver it, but what is normally a 12 minute drive took them 20. No thank you. Stopped by just by chance at this hole-in-the-wall place and found some the best NY Pizza I've tasted. Comparable to Pagliacci and Uno's in Seattle, and very friendly owners. The crust itself was soft and flaky with enough rigidity to support some weight but folded well for the classic NY Pizza experience. The edges were crusty and eminently edible. Vegetable toppings and pepperoni were great; the sausage could be more distinguished, sauce was nice and the cheese was good and at the right amount - enough to cover but not overpower. It's OK pizza. I liked it better before they sold it to the owners now. The place itself is kind of seedy. Sometimes they don't make the pizza till you get there if they think you have an out of state area code. Little do they know some people keep their phone numbers if they move. From the parking lot it looks more like a cheap club than a pizza place. Service was ok but very slow considering there was no one else there. Pizza was way too greasy and bland not to mention small and overpriced for what you get, however I've had worse. Soda machine dispensed flavorless carbonated water. My parents live in North Durham and for years we have struggled to get good pizza. The Domino's by their house is the worst ever, and we don't like other places we've tried. When visiting them a few months ago, we suggested trying "that place right around the corner" and everyone loved it! I can't believe it took us this long to find.
