I wasn't in the mood to cook on a Saturday night after cleaning all day so my dad took me to one of his favorite spots in the Sunset Park area. This is one of those few gems that still exist in this time of inflation where you get alot for your buck. I haven't had a red snapper in awhile so I decided to treat myself to one for $22. It came complete with tostones and a salad. It was so good that I basically attacked it with my teeth and hands to the point that people were staring at me. I only know this for a fact because my dad reported it to me at the end of dinner. I was too enthralled in my dish to notice or care. My daughter had the Churrasco and rice with beans along with a side of salad. My father had a soup of shrimp swimming with explosive flavor. The whole dinner came out to $78 dollars including for 2 soda cans. The service there was impeccable. My dad changed his mind about his order twice and the waitress didn't lose her patience with him for even a second. So she must be some kind of saint. If you want food that tastes like your abuela made it, then you should definitely try Rico Pollo III.

    Chicharron de cerdo (Fried pork)

Our waitress didn't understand our English and we didn't know Spanish but we were able to order by pointing out what we wanted on the menu. However, there was one mixup, I ordered chicharron de cerdo and they gave chicharron de pollo sin hueso instead. We told the waitress about the mixup but she couldn't change our order, so we just added an extra plate of fried pork belly. I guess it was a good thing they messed up the order as I preferred the fried chicken. Overall, everything was a bit too salty for me and I've had better. They have a nice buffet layout in the front to order food, which would be great for people who just want to grab food and go.

Sunday 6/2/2024 I had never been to this spot but my family had and they really enjoyed it so I decided to try it for myself. I didn't really know what to order so I had them order for me and just tried a bunch of different things that looked good. We got takeout orders and the items I tried were: white rice, beans, pork chop, Chicharrón, maduros (plantains), pernil (pulled pork), and a whole fried Dominican chicken. The white rice while abundant was average. The beans were alright but the size was significantly smaller than expected which did not help when balancing out all the rice. The pork chop was decent. The Chicharrón was solid. The plantains were pretty good (it's hard to mess those up lol). The pernil (pulled pork) was pretty underwhelming: the meat was dry, chewy, and definitely some flavor or juiciness to it. The whole fried Dominican chicken was good and easily the best of the proteins I had. Overall, the food experience was solid and I would be open to returning if close by or if it's convenient as it does stay open pretty late.

Show me what I found in my food

When you buy a box of cracker jacks, you know there's gonna be a surprise in there but when you order rice and beans, you're expecting rice and beans and no extra ingredients today I was stun when I found a hair and a piece of I honestly don't know what it is. I could only tell you that it looks like a route like from the cassava, but I asked the owner and he says that they don't put any of these things in the beans well, he was very nice. He gave me a credit for it for the beans now you mind that when I served the beans I put it on my rice so when I found the hair that was disgusting and I had to throw the whole thing out, but it's fine. At least he gave me credit for the beans I didn't notice lately. This restaurant has been selling old food. I ordered a chicken stew and what I got with the back bones of the chicken. It's really not fair when you do takeout or even when you die for one person only you can bring up a bill between $20-$30. You don't make that in an hour why definitely don't so you want to eat something good and fresh now customers beware when you order from this restaurant. The

I stopped in for takeout around 6pm and the place was packed. I ended up ordering a large plate which cost about $20 with rice, beans, plantains and pernil. The food was ok overall because half the pernil was dry. They also needed a better set up for ordering the food because it was unorganized.

Ima keep it a buck. They got the best yucca y cebollas in the area, the chicharron stay fresh all night, plates are cheap, and they make their sangria just like my alcoholic tios. As far as anything else people are saying goes, I have experienced the colorism with my dark skinned Caribbean friends who don't speak Spanish. It was pretty uncomfortable, and I'd be cognizant. Potentially still worth ordering takeout if you love Puerto Rican/Dominican food.

Stewed goat, yellow rice, vegetables, chicken empanada

I decided to check this place out, it's a restaurant serving Dominican and Colombian food. I came here on a Monday for lunch. It's essentially a buffet and you can either dine inside or do take out. There's a lot of indoor seating. I ordered the stewed goat, yellow rice, vegetables, and a chicken empanada. The goat was flavorful and you get a large portion. The vegetables were actually not overcooked but bland. The chicken empanada was super dry but the outer shell was crispy. You definitely to put Tapatio hot sauce on everything, good thing it's on every table. I may or may not come back, but I might try the chicharron next time.

Order an avocado salad, they sent me a regular salad.

I asked for delivery. The delivery person never called or texted me to inform me that they arrived to my home. They just left the food on my doorstop and left. I waited and waited and after waiting for an hour, I called the restaurant. They told me that the delivery person had left over an hour ago. I told the restaurant that I was still waiting for my order. I decided to go outside to see if maybe I would see the delivery person and once I went outside, my food was on my doorstep. My food was extremely cold. It's a hit or miss with this restaurant. When you call the actual restaurant or go in person, it's a hit, but when you use the apps to order like Yelp or GrubHub, it's a miss! The maduros were burnt and black, I asked for an avocado salad and I received a regular plain lettuce and tomato salad and got charged for the price of the avocado salad which is expensive and the white rice was hard on top of it being cold. What a horrible experience especially when you're looking forward to eat a good meal from Rico Pollo Restaurant.

Bandeja Paisa Mini Plate ($11) Cash only!
    Christal Y.

Stumbled into this place hungry! Definitely a good spot to go to for meals that are a bang for your buck. The Bandeja Paisa platter is $14, with the mini platter coming in at $11. You do not. I repeat, do not, need the full platter lol! The mini is huge! A strip of fried pork skin/fat/meat (there's a word for it that I can't remember at this exact moment, so sorry y'all), half a sausage, a fried egg, rice, beans, a bread thing (again, do not know the term, so sorry!), a chicken breast (supposed to come with beef I believe but they ran out for mine & asked me if a swap was okay), and fried plantains. Googled this meal and it's called the workers meal lol, a super heavy carb and protein loaded dish for a work day. More power to ya! It wasn't for me though. Beside me not feeling up to a protein bonanza (in a good way) I did feel like the dish might be subpar generally speaking. Plantains were so fried they were hard (if this is standard please let me know, I'm happy to stand corrected and less ignorant than I came in!), the pork fat strip was 90% day & The skin was too hard to be chewable. I'm all for eating giant hunks of fat, but it was not going to go down at all lol. I wish it had tho! The chicken breast was so good for no reason, pounded flat & not at all dry, yum! The pastries looked good, people seemed cozy and taking their time eating (a good sign for a neighborhood spot). The cashier was really nice as well! I would give them another try, & maybe order something else when I'm hungrier for a platter of protein!

It was sort of an odd time so the spacious restaurant wasn't very busy. We studied the menu for too long and after much deliberation, here's what we ordered, in order of spice level: - Oxtail ($35): Not spicy, super flavorful, "Trimmed and sliced chunks of oxtail seasoned freely with fresh spices and simmered to tender perfection." - Curry goat ($29): Mildly spicy, "Goat meat marinated and cooked in curry spices and herbs makes this an exotic dish." - Jerk chicken ($20): Apparently incredibly spicy so I steered clear of it, "A Jamaican delight. Spicy, delicious chicken baked with this unique combination of spices from the island." The dishes I could handle were excellent, with no drop of sauce left unmopped. On the sides front, the rice and beans, roti, steamed vegetables, and plantains were all tasty. The entree sizes were hearty. Our server seemed like a cool dude: easygoing with a sense of humor. It was kind of chilly in the restaurant, not sure if we were in a warmth dead zone or what. The bathroom was frog-themed which was a cute touch!

The friendly one woman staff helped seat us, recommend the dishes, made the drinks, prepped and served the food. It was all tasty. What's to cheer - Nice not to too sweet homemade rum punch - Solid, flavorful oxtail. Very island spiced and cooked well - Goat was also really strong - Reasonable prices - service with personality What's to jeer - they were out of the jerk chicken unfortunately which I really wanted to try - place is pretty low key and not swimming with ambience

It came out as two huge slices of sourdough stacked so high that I couldn't even finish one. For something that expensive, there should absolutely be some indication of portion size, or at minimum the waiter should mention it when ordering. Avocado toast also isn't exactly something you can box up and save for later, so a lot of it just went to waste. Honestly, the menu feels arrogantly overpriced, what avocado toast dish is pushing $30? The only thing that seemed reasonably priced was the $35 bottomless brunch. Overall, the pricing felt excessive and the lack of transparency made the experience frustrating.

Definitely recommend! I didn't try their wings but I tried the sauce that comes with the wings and it had a lovely kick to it. For dessert we shared the Plantain Paradise and the ice cream paired so great with the plantains. I'm Dominican so I know oxtail pretty well and have made it myself. Thankfully, this place absolutely delivered. The oxtail was perfectly slow-braised, tender, and falling right off the bone -- exactly how it should be. Absolutely amazing. Of course I had the rice and peas, plus some veggies. A few of the veggies were slightly overcooked, but still flavorful and enjoyable. The drinks looked incredible, but I went with the rum punch and loved it. It was a little sweet, but super flavorful, strong, and definitely worth ordering again. For dessert, I had the Hennessy cheesecake, which was rich, decadent, and unbelievably delicious. There were three of us dining, and we all left completely satisfied -- with take-home containers because the portions are VERY generous. The only thing that bothered me a bit was that our server seemed to focus most of her attention on my friend. She is Jamaican, and because I look like a white American woman, I felt a little overlooked at times, even when I had several requests myself. We also had to look for her a couple of times while she was sitting with a group nearby. That said, everyone overall was very nice and welcoming. The bussers especially stood out -- they checked on us often, kept everything clean, and even greeted me in Spanish, which I appreciated. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience and will definitely be back with more people next time.

For my hubby, Brooklyn is home - and we always love exploring the new places the city has to offer when we visit. We had reservations, and were seated within 10 minutes, which was reasonable. The place was packed - everyone was in high spirits, and I was ready to taste some of the best Caribbean cuisine in the region. My hubby's best friend - a Brooklyn resident, joined us. He had been to the restaurant a few times - and had good things to say. We were not disappointed. I had the Brown Stew Red Snapper - *chef's kiss*. Hubby had the iconic Jerk Oxtail over Macaroni & Cheese Pie! The English language cannot convey the beauty of that combination! Tender, tender oxtail, falling off the bone with the creamy, cheesy mac & cheese! He wanted to savor that dish another day, so he got a to-go bag and took it back to the hotel! (I couldn't help but clean my plate - I was obsessed with the fish!) Our friend enjoyed the Hennessy Fried Shrimp (not pictured) - one of his favorite dishes at the restaurant. It looked delicious as well. For drinks, I had the Bob Marley cocktail. A colorful drink - flavorful - and effective! There were people celebrating their birthdays throughout the night - and the wait staff goes IN! I was enjoying watching at least 10 people receive the Stevie Wonder "Happy Birthday" song while we were there. Imagine my surprise when it was my turn! My birthday was the day before, and we had already celebrated in Manhattan. Having two special recognition events made the evening that much more special! Shout out to the Simpson crew who came with the song, the rhythm, the sparkling cake, and the good vibes! My 70th birthday was exceptional - without a doubt. The Simpson added the touch I needed. We'll definitely go back next time we're in Brooklyn!
