I have been here a few times looking at bikes and equipment and both the owner and the employee with the Surly bike were very helpful each of those times. Though I ended up not buying my bike here and going with a friends old bike, rest assured I will buy future equipment here. For instance today after calling and finding out they had a specific lock I was looking for. I don't know where to start with Ride Brooklyn. Perhaps an adequate summary would be that they seem to be friendly enough when you come in asking for air or asking them to repair your bike and you're willing to let them sell you whatever they want, but if you're looking for help or parts so you can do your own work.... well.... read on for the full story. I went in a few weeks ago, had a bad experience and wrote a negative review. Then I thought about it some more, started to worry that I overreacted, and took the review down. I went in again this morning and had ANOTHER bad experience. In total, I've had four non-positive experiences with two of them being quite negative. I think this establishes enough of a pattern that I'm comfortable with putting it down in a review. Experience #1: Meh I went in looking for a specific tool. They didn't have it. They spent 5 or 10 minutes trying to sell me on a different tool that was similar, but not what I wanted. I had done my research, and I knew what I wanted. I only came to the store to give my business to a local small business owner instead of Amazon. I didn't appreciate them trying to sell me on something I didn't want. Experience #2: Bad I went in with a very specific need. I needed a chain pin for my shimano chain so I could remove it for a thorough cleaning and reinstall it. To keep this review as brief as possible, they sold me the wrong size pin. This set off a really annoying "chain" reaction (HA!), since I didn't realize that it was the wrong size until my chain was off, which meant that I had to ride the subway to work for 3 days until I could get the proper size. This wasn't a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but it seems kind of ridiculous that a bike repair shop would make such a basic mistake. I didn't even look at the pin until I was ready to use it (because I trusted them to give me the right size), but even a cursory examination made it obvious that it wasn't the correct size. Experience #3: Meh I returned the pin. The return was relatively painless, but I would have liked some acknowledgment that they sold me the wrong size. The man helping me seemed annoyed that I had the audacity to return something even though it was the shop's fault. Experience #4: Bad I'm switching tire sizes on my touring bike. The tires I have are more suited to long distance touring than city commuting, so I wanted to go with a tire that was a little narrower and much lighter. I purchased the tires, but realized that I forgot to buy tubes. So I went on down to Ride Brooklyn. Not only did they not have the correct size, but the associate went to great lengths to try to convince me that a too-small tube was actually the correct size. When I objected, he turned condescending and tried to tell me how little I knew about bikes and tire sizing. Come on guys. Not Cool. So that's it. I kept going back to Ride Brooklyn because I think that neighborhood bike shops are important and I would like to support them even if things are a little more expensive there. But my patience has wore thin since I was given the wrong part once and encouraged to buy things other than what I needed two other times. My bike is important to me. Everything I do is done after careful research, and I don't appreciate sales associates who are more concerned with making sales than ensuring that I get exactly what I am looking for. I think I'm just about done with Ride Brooklyn. But if you need a simple repair or if you're not sure what you're looking for and want the store associates to make the decisions for you this store will likely meet all of your needs. read more

My son and I rented bikes here and the shop was great! Staff were efficient and helpful. One feature I liked is that (if we had planned ahead) we could have reserved a bike online through Spinlister. The rates were reasonable, $7 per hour or $35 per day for the model of bike we chose. We rode through Prospect Park, the took the Ocean Parkway (a separate, dedicated bike path) to Coney Island, approximately 14 miles round trip from the bike shop and this is a highly recommended route! read more

I've been into the shop to buy miscellaneous gear over the years and have always had positive experiences. They've got a solid selection, reasonable prices for NYC and the retail staff are usually friendly. However, I recently brought my mountain bike in for a tune-up before heading up to Kingdom Trails and 1) had an unpleasant experience with the mechanic who handled the intake and 2) the problems I pointed out were not addressed satisfactorily. 1) The mechanic was gruff, wouldn't make eye contact with me and seemed bothered when I wanted to know about the details of the tune-up they'd be performing. 2) The biggest reason I brought the bike in for a tune-up was because the front brake was "singing" and providing lots of resistance, which I made abundantly clear to the mechanic. They replaced the axle and claimed that was the source of the problem. However, as soon as I took the bike out of the car in VT, the brake was grabbing again - exactly as it had been. I suspect the issue is a bent rotor and I can't fathom how they would have missed that or why they wouldn't have suggested I replace the current one. The transmission also shifted considerably worse after the tune-up. The chain would skip on the lower gears as soon as I started to dig in while climbing. I'm partially to blame, as I was in a rush when I picked the bike up and didn't really take it for a thorough test ride. However, when you're paying ~$100 for a tune-up, you would hope that the work had already been double-checked. Also, the mechanic didn't inquire about what sort of riding I'd be doing or offer to help set the bike up accordingly. I'll continue to go to the store for gear as needed, but I'm going to seek out a shop that specializes in MTB service in order to rectify the issues mentioned above and for future work. read more

It's good to see everyone is SO STOKED about this BIKE SHOP and that everyone is riding HYBRID bikes to save gas. Normal bikes get terrible mileage. As far as Park Slope bike shops, Dixon's and RideBK definitely seem like "green" businesses. R&A is cool if you don't pose, but they can be harsh unless you want a Lance Armstrong Signature Model $5k Carbon-Fucktard Frame. To RideBK's credit, however, they do a decent job and deal some real brand and parts and can do special orders if yr a nerd, or need a hydraulically cushioned cup holder for your 2010 UbërStroller. However, I'd make sure you get everything in writing if you're ordering something, or getting anything done more than a tune-up. read more

I had a flat and stopped here on a busy Sunday afternoon, fully expecting to leave the bike overnight and walk home. But even though packed with people, they said come on back and fixed it right away. The staff to customer ratio might actually be inverted, plus everyone is super nice. Went here after a kind of annoying experience at another local bike shop. I was looking for a decent bike to tool around and commute from time to time in, and trae guys set me up with something I'm very happy with. The staff was attentive and I got asked three or four separate times if I needed any help, but not in a pushy way. I was able to test ride three different bikes without any hassle and found one I liked and bought it on the spot. They give you two free tune ups in the first year and unlimited "adjustments." The only reason I took off a star is that they were a little pushy on accessories. I get that it's important for them to sell extras, but in the age of Amazon, charging full retail for lights and bells and locks when I can get the exact same stuff for 40% less means I'm way better off waiting a day or two. I get that they have to do it, but it got pushed a bit hard. Happy to have these guys nearby and they'll be my first stop from now on. read more

The people that ride Brooklyn are really helpful. Murray, who runs the repair shop in the back, is very knowledgeable, and very customer service oriented. They are open seven days a week . initially, just rented bikes for them, the rental prices are very reasonable., but I ultimately bought one I'm done. Their selections of bikes for sale have wonderful. Not the super expensive high-end racing bikes good quality solid bikes commuting around this city. I always return here for service. Been here a number of times for relatively minor things and have always had an excellent experience. The folks are super down to earth, knowledgable and patient. Each time I've come here with my monster moutain bike (totally not meant for city biking) and lime green helmet (both of which my friends, especially the more serious bikers, give me sh* about all the time), I've been treated with total respect and courtesy and given the same amount and quality of attention as the customer next to me in spandex racing gear and a two grand bike. I've only had my bike serviced once for something very minor (new handles)- even though I came in on a Saturday afternoon, they were able to attend to my bike within 10 minutes and they had it ready to go 10 minutes later. I've gotten solid advice on a number of things (tire, handle bar and bell issues), there is a decent selection (although given the size of the shop, probably not the largest or most diverse) of bikes and all sorts of accessories, and the prices are definitely very fair. Also. At some point in time, they rented bikes. Not sure that's still true given the Citi bike situation, but worth asking about, as the shop is located a few blocks from Prospect Park. read more

So I actually have had good experiences in the past, so I was surprised at my experience today. In a nut shell, the bike parts were not tightened and there were more repairs to be done that probably could have been told to me if they had looked to see if the bike worked. What happened to my bike: It got hit by a car was thrown to ground in a way that bent the pedal/crank arm. This led me to lock it up in front of my apartment for a couple of weeks because I didn't have time to take it in. While it was out I had the entire front stolen (Handle bars, stem, brakes, brake lever, brake cable, spacers). This led it to be stored all winter for me to look at. I finally took it in to get everything taken care of, and usually things like this I can install myself but I decided to just have it taken care of so I brought it in. It was a bit more than I thought it would be, probably because of labor which I don't normally pay for. I was willing to take the hit and go for it. So they actually did the handle bars and everything that day. Then they told me the pedal was just damaged and I was relieved because I thought I would have to replace the crank arm as well. So I pick out pedals and wait to pick it up the next day. I come in to pick it up and first off the handle bars are loose and just drift downwards. A nice gentleman fixes that no problem, I pay and I go on my way. Then I notice the pedal is still wobbling (not as much as before but it definitely is), so I take it back and tell them about it and turns out I need to replace the crank as well. I wish they had just told me that so I could get that under way. It's still okay to ride, but I want it fixed so it's probably going to be another $20 and probably another labor charge which is a bummer. I take the bike back out and start riding and then the handle bars start to drift to the side and turns out nothing about the handle bars has been tightened, which is really unprofessional. I took it back and the made sure everything was all good, I shouldn't have had to do that though considering I was told it was ready and paid for it. Needless to say I don't like shops that give me unfinished business, and I may come to get parts but I'm thinking twice about getting work done. read more

If the wait is any indication, Ride Brooklyn is pretty damn good. Their staff is super friendly and helpful, but expect a week's wait if you bring your bike in for any work (my roommate and I both experienced this). Tristan, who worked in the back, was great. He listened to me explaining my problems and came up with the solutions and different price points. The tune up was $70 but I also needed some replacement parts, etc. Came back a week later to pick up my bike. They kinda ignored me for a bit before realizing that nobody actually went to get my bike. But when I got it, most of it looked good. I had also asked them to replace the handlebar tape, and it was a little haphazardly done. Just aesthetics. The chain was a lot smoother and I felt safer and more confident on the road. Upon further riding, it felt like they hadn't adjusted the brakes too well and the front pads were a bit uneven. A quick fix though, but for the price I expected more attention to detail. read more

Brought my bike in for a tune-up. All told I shelled out $100+ for the tune-up and new brake cables. A bit pricey. A year later, a different bike shop showed me how my frame had been compromised by a very strong head-on collision. Must have been the previous owner -- I would have remembered that. This bike shop said as a matter of policy and liability that it would not repair my damaged bike. I was surprised that Ride Brooklyn didn't catch the problem. But after this post, they were quick to contact me, apologize and extend me future discounts if I kept my business with them. For that I applaud their commitment to their customers. It's a little pricey, but it's Park Slope. read more

4 stars only because I haven't had them do that much work. What I did have done, two bike tune ups, was 5 star work. Pete, the owner, was, despite being really busy, Very nice and thorough in looking at our bikes, explaining what needed to be done, what was urgent and what could wait, and giving us pricing options. The actual work seems to have been done well. I am going back today for a few other things and will revisit this review. I'm hoping to be able to give them 5 stars. Update 9/18: I've been back a few times for minor tweaks (free), flat repairs, etc. The service is great, 5 star. I'm keeping it at 4 stars, though, just because the selection of accessories is limited. But, if you don't care about that, it's a great place to go. read more

Good guys who are helpful and not overly pushful, nor have an overbearing air of what I like to call "gearhead chauvanism" that is pretty common in bike shops. My bike is kind of a basket case (bike pun) and it needs work from time to time. I always take it here because they don't overcharge for work, and will even point out when something is amiss with my bike that I don't notice and will fix it. Oh yeah, they have free air out front, which is nice. Its better to pay in cash as sometimes their credit machines mess up, which I have seen from time to time. read more

This is actually a really nice shop. The people are nice and very cool in the sense that anyone that comes in will say, 'wow, these guys are cool'. Right there, they win over a large amount of shops. The selection is a little tight but the shop is very bright and welcoming. The people ask if you need help because they seem to care. I don't know what else to say. If you wanted a shop for everyone that's easy going and not a prick, this is #1. Sooo far ahead of all the other Brooklyn shops (that I've been to) in terms of actually being an LBS and not just a 'I bought my bike there' shop. read more

I'll leave the below review for context, but I'm updating it now. After I wrote it, they called and made a good-faith effort to make things right; the manufacturer replaced my bike (with a newer model from a different factory), and the shop put it together for me and made sure I was satisfied. It says a lot, and shows a dedication to the comminity, that the owner here is willing to take the time and really try to fix any problems. -- -- Hate this shop. I've come in numerous times for small fixes (b/c it's convenient, and since I bought my bike here, free for the first year), and they NEVER do a solid job. It's half-assed every time, like the dude thinks all he has to do is tighten a knob and walk away - they never really check to make sure you're getting what you need and that the problem is actually solved. Also feel like the bike I bought was a total up-sell. It doesn't fit, needed plenty of tweaking after they said it was ready... Clearly they wanted to get rid of it and didn't care whether it was right for me or not. read more

A welcome addition to the Bike shops of greater Park Slope. I wanted to upgrade my hybrid to clipless pedals (I'd already gotten a pair of shoes online) - rolled on in on a Saturday morning and they got my new pedals on and set me up on a trainer to practice clipping in and out. They were super friendly and eager to make sure I didn't hurt myself with my new equipment. They were also helping out a couple looking for a bike for their toddler - so they seemed to be able to handle both seriousish riders and more general bikers as well. Nice and nicely done. read more

They also will get your bike fixed quickly - both times I've been there for repairs, they've had it done in under 2 hours. My front derailleur all but stopped working and I finally took my Giant TCR in to try to get an assessment. I'd been procrastinating doing this because thought it would require ordering a new part and that I'd have to leave my bike for at least a day (which I really didn't want to do bc weekly mileage goals). Instead, Shawn did a quick analysis and figured out exactly what needed doing and patiently explained the fix he did right in front of me. Clearly a very experienced mechanic, everything he remarked on was of course true and he gave me some great best practice advice to better care for my bike (not to mention get more out of my rides). Their online store is inaccurate. I ordered something that the website said was in the store. I waited at least three days before I called them up when I didn't hear from them. As I expected, it wasn't in stock at all. Minus a star for that and never was. I did show up to see what they had and was helped by a courteous woman. Plus a star for that. I've asked questions over email for a particular service I was looking for before showing up at the store in-person. They never answered my email. Minus another star for that. When I did show up, to have my tire fixed, they replaced the tube quickly. Plus a star for that. Overall, they just seem disorganized and a little aloof regardless of a pandemic or not. I've never had a poor in-person experience over the years but you've got to know what you want. There are other options in the area but I'm mostly motivated by the close proximity of the place. There's another one on 5th but I'd avoid that one entirely. read more

Knowledgeable bike techs and decently friendly staff to help you find what you're looking for. Otherwise Ride Brooklyn didn't feel like anything special to me. Also, prices acoss the board were more expensive than surrounding bike shops (parts, accessories, services). I will say this was the only shop that charged me to loosen a chain link and raise my seat-post (which I've had to do at a few other shops mid-ride - I was still getting adjusted and figuring out what was comfortable and this place was on my route so I thought I'd stop in and make a quick adjustment). Not sure if this is normal but I was a bit irked when they didn't tell me they were going to charge me and ended up saying it was $10 for the "repair". I will certainly change this review if this is the norm and all the other bike shops were just being extra nice but it seems to be expensive/unnecessary for a 2-3min. drop-in. read more

I walked into RIDE with the intent of just shopping around the hood for a new bike. What I didn't expect was the test ride bike that was suggest by Andy was the bike I was going to walk out with that day. Andy explained what I would be getting with the Giant TCR Advanced 2 2018 very throughly without any pressure. I thought it would be more then what I needed, but it was everything and exactly what I needed for my entry back into riding a road bike. He knew the bike would sell itself, but it helped that he got me on the right bike and did a quick fit which really is a very important detail in making the sale. I love this bike. Since I've bought the bike I've gone in twice. I thought I needed to adjust the bike, but Darrell helped me sort out that I needed to just relax and not lock my arms. Then I went in for fitting after 2 months of having the bike with Jake. The pain I was experiencing in my knee had from longer rides has seemed to have disappeared with the recalibrated fitting. I also asked Jake if they had a bike mechanical maintenance class. He said they had some seminars and until they did have something worked out, he specifically suggested another shop, which was helpful and speaks volumes to me. Can't speak highly enough about the the RIDE teams service, helpfulness and friendly banter. There can certainly be a lot of attitude in retail in general, and for those reviews that had experienced possible attitude in service, that has not been my experience. Remember that people servicing us are human and can have bad days or your attitude is so annoying that it causes others to have a bad day, pause think about your own jobs. I'm generally pretty affable on my own job, but I've got my days no matter how hard I try. I do believe in buying local whenever possible and think their costs on bikes, kit and service are fair and on par with most of the shops around the area. If you really think about what it costs to run and maintain a shop anywhere in NYC it ain't cheap. It's helpful making comparisons if the claim is valid. If you think you can find better then shop around and do let the YELP community know. The internet is good for doing that. So no complaints about the team or shopping at RIDE. If you are looking for a new bike I'd suggest stopping by and seeing what they may have for you. If they don't have the brand you are looking for, one of the many other bike shops will, but the quality of their service since and after the sale to me is what has sold me on this particular shop.
