FIRST AND FOREMOST: I have never worked at Riley's Farm, nor am I affiliated in any way. I have been going to Riley's Farm for my entire adult life. I have taken many classes and my own family there around 100 times (conservatively) over the past 20+ years. Not only is the area a gorgeous and relaxing respite from life in the surrounding valley, but I have had the honor of having met Mr. Riley and his employees. All are wonderful, family-oriented people - as well as excellent tour guides and historians. The food and music is wonderful to boot! REGARDING NEGATIVE REVIEWS: Attempting to rate such a wonderful, family business (and local business staple) on the basis of politics and personal belief is nothing less than prejudice. BOTTOM LINE: If you disagree with the owner's personal beliefs, THEN DON'T GO! Perfect Example: I'm not a personal fan of having local bars near where I live. I'm not a big drinker and I don't like drunks near my family. Guess what? I don't go! Same at Riley's Farm. Ultimately, I (with all honesty) enjoy this place. I could do this every Friday... Best apple dumpling I've ever had in my life!! We also tried the chicken pot pie and beef and potato pie. They were equally delicious! Because we went on a weekday, there wasn't a whole lot going on out here, but it was kinda nice to have the whole place to ourselves. The staff was so friendly and made us feel right at home. Spent the day here yesterday with my 2 adult daughters. A little late in the apple picking season, but picked some great ones. No sunflowers available. A small portion of beautiful marigolds. Parking: There is a parking lot available as soon as you drive in, but there is another larger one further up on the property, near the Apple picking orchard, a mercantile, and the bbq food. We got there about 1130 and got lucky finding a spot. Food: One of my daughters waited about 45 minutes for the bbq. Pulled pork sandwich was tasty but the meat wasn't hot, nor warm enough. Potato salad and beans were pretty good. $18 for the plate was fair. The chicken pot pie had an amazing crust! We tried the apple turnover (SO GOOD), Apple pie slice with salted caramel sauce (Decent but sauce was excellent), fudge with walnuts, chocolate chip cookies (good stuff), cider is delicious and ended with a cider mimosa!! Purchased Raspberry syrup too! So many activities to do, axe throwing. Archery, candle dipping. Fun place! We were lucky to have neen there on Veterans day and saw the Civil War reenactment. 1. I live in a city very close by Riley's, yet it was still a distance to get to the orchard--which if fine. However, I have a toddler that gets car sick and the road there was very wind-y. I just wish I would have known or read that in a review prior. Not that it ultimately effected my review or experience. But I do write this for any other parent to keep in mind, as a heads up. 2. I will say, the staff IS friendly and helpful. HOWEVER, there must have been one or two field trips going on at the same time. So I feel we didn't get the experience the way we wanted, with maybe a helpful guide. 3. Which leads me to my 3rd point-- unless you have a map or have been there before or went with someone who has gone-- you would be completely lost. I was hoping there'd be more staff around to show us exactly where all of the apples were. Especially because I had two little girls with me. 4. I did read a prior review that there were a lot of old, rotten apples on the floor, which was in fact true. We did find some good apples, but we really had to hunt for them. 5. This was our second visit to Riley's farm. I really enjoy coming here as you do feel like you take a step back in time to the late 1700's. Please note that the restaurant is not doing wait service, however you can order from the service window and sit down inside the restaurant and enjoy some amazing comfort food (hint, the chicken pot pie is awesome!!). We were there during their Colonial Faire which was a blast. It's cool to see people passionate about history. We were able to throw axes, shoot bow and arrow and see a really interesting demonstration from blacksmiths. The property is massive!!!! While there, you can pick fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, etc.) to take home. The farm hosts a lot of different event thru out the year and if I remember correctly, the location can be rented for events like weddings, but I would check on their website or call. All in all, its a great drive up to some beautiful mountain scenery, have a great meal and escape from the city. read more

Went to Sleepy Hollow and it the experience itself was fun. The portions are hit and miss. I got a decent size serving of salad and beans. My 6'5" husband on the other hand got about 3 leaves of caeser salad and a tablespoon worth of baked beans. These baked beans are not the bbq baked bean kind. More like the pinto beans kind you get at mexican restaurants but with stewed tomatoes. They were ok. I'd rather it be the bbq baked beans. The tri tip was welldone and therefore tough to chew. The bbq chicken however was the best i ever had. The bbq glaze on it was on point and the chicken was juicy and tender. I recommend chicken over tri-tip. The cornbread was great and so was the potato. Once you grab your plate, the condiments are inside on the counter... butter, honey, sauces. The soup we opted for was the chowder soup which was lacking in flavor but not bad. However, it was only luke warm. Would have been nicer if served hot. As for the event, the actors are super duper nice and professional and great. Only the lady manning the mercantile store seemed a bit grouchy. Really, the only negatives would be the parking situation and the bathroom facilities. The parking is pitch black with very very little lighting to help you navigate to the actual parking site. Once parked (which is a dirt lot), you need to use your cell phone to help you walk. the path is not lit at all and there was nobody out there to assist with parking which i think is greatly needed. The bathroom. ugh. Please update/fix/repair the facilities. The toilet did not have a lid, it was grundgy, the paper towels were laid out on a diaper changing station. The path to the bathroom was pitch black and located 100 yards away from the activities and you can't help but think an axe murder is lurking in the woods about to jump you. Overall, had a great time, but like others said, the play was hard to follow and hear. the sound system muffled the actors voices which made it hard to know what was being said. read more

The five stars are for the 49ers Gold Rush Tour. Took my students there. We arrived there around 10 and they came quickly to get us checked in and welcomed us. Staffs dressed like old time. Forgive me I only remembered Ms Ruby. They started with bathroom stop then walked up to the gold mining area. Staffs were fun, patient, and interactive. Children learned about bank and trading, how ppl mined in the tunnel, and living situation etc. There are total of 6 stations: bank, a house for miners, a pond, a water pump, gold mining tunnel, and water channel. Kids learned how to used wash board and carrying fresh water for cleaning. The program had incorporated education and chores to one. Great flow of the program. Kids may sweep the floor, rake the ground, wash clothes, digging gold in from the pond, and searching golden nuggets in the tunnel. It lasted about an hour and half which was perfect timing for school age kids. After the activities, they gave children a cup of lemonade, a slice of beef jerky, cheese, and cornbread, and an apple as a lunch break. You could also order fodder pies or food from the menu. Around 1pm, staffs came back with the gifts for auctions! Kids learned about how auctions work! We all had great time there. Highly recommended. Heard the admission costs $18 for kids, and adults are more expensive. You may want to phone in to ask details. Riley's farm has other programs. I went to hawkshead restaurant and it was very disappointing. First I wanted an apple turnover but, I was told they were out. Then I asked for apple pie nope on that also. So, they suggested salted Carmel apple pie which was described as Carmel on top and under the crust. So, I got a slice, a chicken pot pie because they didn't have the beef pot pie either. I also ordered the sausage and apples to share. Another person in our group shows up at the table with an apple turnover When my food finally arrived we sat down to eat and were bombarded with bees. In our food all over the kids we asked to go inside and were told no. We finally just ate in the car. The pie was not good barely any Carmel no salty flavor just bland. The chicken pot pie was ok. I have to say if you're going to force people to eat outside maybe for $38 you could provide some citronella candles or something so people don't have to flee to their cars to avoid being stung by hundreds of bees. read more

Amazing! I never write reviews, but seeing all the negative reviews I feel like I have to. We visited for a overnight school field trip with 30 children. 15 adults. Food was great, the actors/ team are incredible ( not rude) even the owner was so polite. Sleeping arrangements were rugged, but we survived and actually felt accomplished when we woke. The whole tour was incredible, I personally learned a lot. After this tour I feel very proud to be an American. Please read up on the Riley farm. What this farm has been through is not fair. Please don't think twice about your visit here. Great experience. read more

I wen to Riley's farm on October 17, 2020. For some context my family I have gone apple picking when we lived in Connecticut and other parts of New England so that was our basis for comparison. Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Riley's farm. What I loved: their pot pies are SO good. Definitely some of the best I have ever had. Their apple and other fruit pies are also excellent. This is a very large property (which is a pro and a con) so you can go to a pumpkin patch, pick berries, pick apples, throw hatchets, press cider etc. They also have people dressed in colonial costumes. They have a large area for lunch where you can feast on BBQ so you don't have to drive 30 min to get food in town. It is a great family activity. They also don't charge for parking or for entrance which is great. What I didn't like: Depending on when you go parking is tough to find. I got there 30 minutes after opening and I parked on the street. My brother got there later and parked a mile up the road and had to hike to the farm. This isn't their (Riley farm) fault so just get there early. If you have a stroller it is pretty tough to push it uphill and on the dirt paths. Again, not their fault, just keep that in mind when choosing a stroller (pick one with larger wheels) or bring a baby carrier instead and some hiking shoes. While I loved their pot pies (got this to go) their BBQ food was mediocre at best. The burger had been cooked some time ago and the tri tip also. You are a bit of a captive audience and they serve a lot of people so that is to be understood but my point is mostly don't expect the BBQ food to be excellent. I did like their corn option. And the last part I didn't want to get into but I feel is worth mentioning is: people should really keep their businesses and politics separate. I know the owner had conservative leanings since he advertises them on the farm's website but where it concerned me was that there was a large number of people not wearing masks at the farm. If that doesn't concern you, you are good to go. If it does concern you, you may not feel comfortable at the farm even though it is outdoors because you are in lines all the time to pay for the apples, pumpkins, for food, etc. There is no enforcement that I saw so if you want someone without a mask breathing on you for 40 minutes while you wait for your burger go for it. I wore my mask when around people and when I was away from the crowds I took it off. The owner of the farm makes a point of airing his grievances on his website. Honestly, that could have been a dealbreaker for me. I prefer businesses and politics be separate. I don't know if it was sanctioned by the farm but there were people with "Recall Newsom" tables when I was there. Again, I go to the farm to relax and get away from the politics so I would prefer it just be a farm and not a political soapbox for EITHER party. Overall, I think it is a great farm and great family activity. I wish the farm well and hope they continue to serve the southern california community for years to come. read more

This has nothing to do with the owner being racist, because had I known that he wouldn't have received a penny!! This is the most unorganized place I've been to. It looks organized when you pull in and the parking patrol tells you where to park. From there you have to "read the map" to find the General Store (extremely overpriced cider for $24!) to the U-Pick apples. There's a tent to pay but not to get a bag. The bag is from a different guy and he said only pick these trees. By the afternoon of opening day, only apples over 6 feet were viable for picking. No ladders, steps and definitely no climbing allowed, so you end up picking the tiniest apples or fallen ones bruised or pecked. We scrounged a 3/4 of a provided paper bag and at $3.50 a pound paid $10 something for our "experience". How about helping out your customers get some decent fruit? Overrated and we ended up going to Rios for a decent bag of apples...3 pounds for $7.00. read more

What a beautiful oasis in the mountains, lovely retreat for families, couples and friends to enjoy fresh air, apple picking, pick nicking in the sweet mountain air and having lunch from the restaurant. This place is popular on the weekend and parking is limited lot thou can park on the side of the road. Lots of events happening here, pls check out website for the tours and re-enactments of Civil War history. Our picnic fare included: Grilled cheese - the bread was dry and cheese was half way melted. It's simple, disappointed in the value and flavor for $6 Croissant chicken salad sandwich, small portion and croissant was too dry. Beef and potato pie was warm and delicious. Chicken pot pie is a crowd pleaser. Creamy with chicken spreads, peas, potatoes and carrots with a flaky buttery crust that is perfect on a chill day. Served hot! A must have is the cold or hot apple cider, delicious. They press their apples from their orchard, that's sustainable, local and farm to table. Lots of tables and chairs to seat and also there is the lawn. Live music was playing adding a comforting atmosphere. This was our first time and planning returning sooner than later. My boyfriend and I stumbled across Riley's Farm while searching for the Riley's apple orchards and had a lovely little walk! Unfortunately we weren't hungry enough to order some food, but it's definitely a great, family friendly place to relax for a quick brunch. Some kids and their families were doing a sort of revolutionary/civil war reenactment, which was super cute. Maybe it's a regular event going on here, but the kids were adorable. Strawberry picking go early otherwise the best sun ripened ones are gone. If you go to the field and none for you to pick, it is on YOU, no refund. The cashier did caution me. I found a few and happily picked them. Sweet and firm! Good crop. Candle making here, archery, axe throwing, and corn husk doll making. 7$ each get a ticket from the first white small White House. I used to like Riley's farm until Jim took a shot at Maui and all who have lost their lives. Jim's quote in a email advertising Riley's Farm -" I wager the private farm owners of Oak Glen are a tad better at emergency planning than your average Maui civil servant. " You have had many mud flows since the fire scared out Oak Glen and you have worked through how to save your properties. Do you not remember the fire that almost took your property?? Maui never had a fire like this one, the winds made fighting the fire almost useless. it killed many more than any disaster you have had in Glen Oak where you not out run the fire. You have the nerve to compare death and destruction of Maui to your mud flow? Never again will I come to your place and I hope Ohana reads this and does the same. read more

I was there today, I went just for Chicken pot pie. I've had it in the past and was the best pie I ever had, However Today was the worst chicken pot pie I have ever had it was bland no taste, a frozen dinner would have tasted 100% better!!!!! BUT!!!!! The braised beef and potato pot pie was the best thing I've ever tasted!!! For the beef pie I give 5 stars. They have a policy no exchange or money back, that's ok but I will NEVER get the chicken pie again, definitely NOT worth the $16. I guess they changed or didn't follow the recipe!!! read more

This is such a great place!!!! It's like history comes to life here!!! The time they are set in is right before the revolutionary war, and everyone does an amazing job staying in character!!! The actors are wonderful! They are friendly and always happy to take pictures. The farm has a lot of land, and offer a ton of fruit picking options. There is also a really cute restaurant on site that has really good food. They also have a few stores that sell interesting souvenirs, like an old time butter churn. They offer activities such as axe throwing, candle dipping and more, unfortunately my husband and I came on a weekday and the activities are only offered on the weekends so we will definitely have to come back. This place is really cool. The exterior and interior are from the colonial period. I went during the winter slow months so there are not a lot of activities happening, but I know during peak months there are a lot of things to do here. Even in the slow months there are people playing period music inside. The only downside to me was the food. There were many reviews about the chicken pot pie. I found it to be really bland and flavorless. You can't go wrong with Apple pie though. I'm guessing the Sally Lunn bread is traditional, but to me it was just an expensive slice of bread, nothing special. All in all, the ambience deserves a 4 star. read more

It's a little hard to rate Riley"s because there's so much to do. There are almost no signs though so you better get a map. And the only one I saw was near the archery area. Con was waiting in line for food... Their restaurant is closed "for COVID" which makes no sense whatsoever. No one else is closed. Why would they be? Anyway, obviously if I'd known it was going to be a 2 hour wait, I wouldn't have gotten in line, but once you're in line for an hour it becomes a quest to get your food no matter what, so you keep standing there. The pot pie was way overrated and not worth anywhere near 2 hours of your farm day standing in line. Shooting arrows was fun. $1 each basically, and they only let one person at a time go, but there wasn't a long line... No signage so I don't think people really knew it was there unless they just knew. I had to go up to the pay table and ask the scowling girl what she was doing there to find out she was selling tickets to the archery, candles, blacksmith, axe throwing, etc. No sign. Pear picking was super fun once you can figure out where to go to check in and get bags and stuff. Bad and/or no signs. They have NO signage telling you where to go for anything and multiple employees will direct you inaccurately, so take your chances. What few signs they do have are pretty small so you have to go up to them to see what they say and they almost never direct you where to go. The absolute far and away best part of Riley's Farm was The Legend of Sleepy Hollow dinner, which is not included in the regular Riley Farm stuff... We booked it 6 months in advance and even then we had to call because our date wasn't available. Again, no checkin sign (you can hear them saying "Figure it out for yourself," right?) (It's inside the General Store.) The dinner was much different than I expected and in many ways much better. I envisioned a chilly, outside more adult experience dinner on long picnic tables after a hay ride, and the story to be acted out all around you. It was actually inside in a decently warm barn style building, with most of the acting on a stage and was pretty comfortable except the unbelievably fragile and unsteady chairs. Keep looking around for a different one though... You'll find one that is less scary than the others. There were a LOT of little kids. Probably I was naive to expect an adult experience... Not sure why I did. I just wouldn't expect little kids to be out that late, but parents are different these days. (The whole thing from start to finish was alnost 4 hours and didn't get out until way after 9pm.) It was extremely difficult to hear the show because kindergarten - 2nd or 3rd grade kids literally never stop talking, but if you cup your ears toward the stage you could make it out enough to follow. I didn't expect the little things... The dancing, apple bobbing, conga line thingy, and pumpkin carving (I cut the @#$! out of my finger with their stupid little steak knife) were awesome fun!! (They didn't choose my awesome sculpted pumpkin, but next year!! No, I'm kidding... They should give it to a little kid and that's what they did.) The best part was Brom Bones and Ichabod Crane. Either one of these actors could have stolen any other show, but they were both so awesome it's hard to call a winner. We will definitely be returning for another dinner show!! read more

I have been wanting to come here for years, because of all of the people who have highly recommended it, and now that I have come here I see why it is so popular. We so enjoyed our experience here that I am, sad that I don't live closer. We drove three hours to visit this farm and it was well worth it. We went to one of their dinner events and it was one of the most spectacular evenings that I have had in years. The ambience was absolutely beautiful, the staff was extremely professional and entertaining, food was delicious and it was an overall life-affirming night. I really can't say enough about it, so I will say this, everyone must experience one of these dinners, at least once in your life, so go on their website and make a reservation before they are sold out! Was aware that this place would be busy on weekends. I was prepared for crowds, a wait on parking. But thousands and thousand of people arriving within 45 minutes of opening hours, completely full parking lot and 3 miles of traffic? That's just poor management. For an establishment such as this, which evidently has ample money and space, you would think that there would be better management in place when it comes to traffic, parking, crowd control, etc. Not only is there no overflow parking, the roads were lined on both sides with parked cars that blocked visibility on blind corners, pedestrians forced to walk down the road to avoid parked cars. I saw several people nearly hit, including a mom with a stroller. We wound up sat in traffic for an hour only to turn around. If the parking and crowd management is anything like the management of the actual business, I want nothing to do with it. I would recommend that this business sell tickets for entry online, with a cap on how many can be on the farm at the time. Severely disappointed and frustrated. Book for a weekday if you want to visit this place. read more

I've always loved American Colonial History, but living in Southern California we don't have access to the re-enactments or historical towns like back East. I found Riley's Farm on the internet years ago and finally got to go today. I can say that Riley's farm delivered much more than I expected. My wife and our 2 boys had a blast, and the other families we went with also had a memorable time. Educational, entertaining and immersive. The staff are friendly, and the living historians are engaging. The farm alone is on a beautiful property, and we will certainly return. We loved the ambiance of Riley's farm. We decided to pick your own strawberries, feed the sheep, and eat some amazing desserts. The picking was good, we are not experts, therefore, our picking was not too impressive. We brought home small strawberries that were probably picked too early... but that is on us! The sheep were so friendly. Once they saw we had hay, they moved out of the shade and moved right up o the fence. All our hay was gone in a matter of minutes, however, the sheep stayed around and allowed us to pet them and take some pictures! The best part was the cool strawberries lemonade, Dutch apple pie, and apple dumplings. My son loved the lemonade so much, he had to get an additional one ... for the road! Rileys Farm is an ambitious blending of history, nature, and fresh mountain air. The large property highlights Civil War-era culture on one side, and Revolutionary War-era lifestyle in another part of the acreage. Apple and berry picking, plus a pumpkin patch, are highlights. School groups take field trips up to Riley's during the week to experience the uniforms/clothing/customs of the day. On Saturdays, the rest of us can participate in activities like candlemaking or tomahawk throwing. The facilities close on Sundays, so no hayrides or BBQ for you then! The colonial-style Hawk's Head Publick House provides hearty meals in a setting for for the 1700's. In the upper property, a rustic barn offers BBQ and entertainment. Throughout the year, seasonal plays in a dinner theatre mode rotate to draw visitors up the mountain. One day, we'll also try one of their dance events. Free off-street parking is a plus. Several gift shops, plus the bakery, fill the desire to take something home. Raw honey, jams, fruit sauces, and other tasty treats satisfy as flavors from Oak Glen. One of our favorite stops when we head the the orchards in Glen Oaks. They have a nice u-pick pumpkin field that's fun to explore. And the prices are good. They also have u-pick apples and are open during the week so you can avoid the crowds. However, their apple cider prices are one of the highest in the area, so I'd recommend hitting up a different spot for that. read more
