A coffee shop within walking distance from most of the lodges downtown - and in particular the Cumbres & Toltec Railway depot. They open early which is another plus. A large menu of coffee/tea menu, pastries and breakfast sandwiches. Loved the fall theme decor and menu to accompany. I had the hungry hunter bagel and the butter pecan latte... both hit the spot. Service was friendly. Indoor and outdoor seating. They have a decent evening menu and wine bar but that is only open Thursday- Saturday till 8 pm... so didn't get a chance to check out the pm experience this trip around.

Second time we've been. Coffee (we had the medium roast) was excellent as was service. This particular day the staff mentioned that at least two people did not show up for work - making her job a nightmare. I only overheard this, she was speaking to someone she knows.so kudos to her for keeping a friendly, caring service orientation during a busy morning. The pastries were ok, we also had an egg bagel who we both did not like so much, the flavor was good in my opinion, but the bagel too doughy/soft. These are pre made and baked in their oven. If they can figure out how to make these fresh on the fly, I think they would be much more appealing, The coffee was VERY good. I'll definitely go back for that, maybe more. Clean inside, nice arrangement of tables and there is seating outside with heaters.

We were surprised and pleased to learn that Rio Chama Espresso is open for dinner. I tried the Double Green Chile Cheeseburger. It was just okay. The buns were burnt (black) top and bottom. Still quite edible, just not as good as the green chile cheeseburger I'd had the day before, for less money, elsewhere in Chama. This place has an amazing selection of drinks - it fills up a long chalkboard - and I believe that's their real forte.

We were headed to Taos, NM from Durango, Co and wanted to grab a hot and tasty espresso beverage as it was a pretty chilly winters morning. There were two people ahead of us, and immediately, the woman behind the counter acknowledged us and advised that they were super short staffed. But she would be with us as soon as she could. We appreciated that she gave us the heads up, and happily waited. While waiting in line, we pursued the holidays treats of cookies, brownies, etc. We were probably in and out in about 15 -20 mins. tops. The mocha and cinnamon vanilla latte were so good! The espresso was flavorful and not bitter at all. What a cute and rustic place!

Drove up to Chama to explore the area and check out my friends wedding venue doing some wedding planing with the amazing venues owner and checking out the town, Inn's and Airbnb's that the wedding party and some guests will be staying at. I've been to Chama for the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad but we've always caught the train at the Colorado station and bussed back and never got to explore the town. The town is so cute! Love, love, loved Rio Chama Espresso employees were amazing and super helpful and patient as we decided what we wanted and making Accommodations being that I'm a veggie they made the Caprese sandwich without the bacon, it was Delicious!! We also tried the cranberry orange scone which is also amazing and the coffee was delightful, I got an almond milk latte with a pump of lavender. Loved the fire pit and outside seating, it was a cold day and started snowing while we were sitting outside but even with the cold the fire kept us nice and warm! Excited for the wedding and to come back and indulge in their coffee and bakery items! Will need to buy a bag of beans to take home too!! If you are in the area this is most stop and try if you are a coffee love and it you are a fellow veggie they will help you figure something out!

This place is so highly crafted, from the bistro chairs to the stools and bar , every detail has been treated like a work of art. I ordered an espresso drink, a straight 10, scone, delicious and cake like, fantastic! I spent a lot of time chatting with staff Wendy and Cassie, totally delightful locals with lots of love for Chama and their customers. The lunch items looked delicious altho it was breakfast so a visit next time for lunch or dinner is on my radar. The dinner menu looks incredible and all pricing is affordable including prime rib dinner with potato, vegetable and desert! The owner takes reservations for dinner and also will cater meals for groups. Highly doable for larger parties with a good sized indoor area and generous space outside. Make sure you stop here on your way through or ride the narrow gauge to Colorado and make sure you stop by. Also, there is a great wine and beer menu.

Outstanding espresso and pastries. More than we expected on the way to Durango. Enjoyed the atmosphere the baristas. Highly recommend.

After spending the night in Chama, we were looking for a place to grab breakfast since our hotel didn't provide any. Just like the night before, there weren't a whole lot of options. We found this spot on the Main Street through Chama. I ordered the roast beast sandwich and my wife had the avocado test and a peach smoothie. All the items were great! Only complaint was the price. My sandwich alone was $11, and the sandwich wasn't stuffed with as much ingredients for the cost. Plus, there was no side to accompany the sandwich. My wife loved her toast, and the smoothie did taste good. Seemed like one of (if not) the best options in town for breakfast. They were pretty quick too!

This place is beautiful, the coffee is great as well as the pastry! Baristas are cool. Nice fire pit outside on a cool morning.

Looks rustic from the outside but when you get inside it's absolutely beautiful, nice artwork and the festive decor makes you feel right at home.

The vibes are strong here. It nails its rustic atmosphere and has a nice patio to sit out on. It's close-ish to the river, but you're mostly looking at a parking lot. All the other wares very much match the country-chic I think this is going for. I got very much the feeling of "we want to be a Magnolia of Colorado" from this place. Many of the items on sale referenced Root itself, trying to make fetch happen. As for what we got, we got some coffee, smoothies, and sweet tea. I also had one of their energy balls. Pricing was a bit on the high end, even for Pagosa. What was most absurd to me was how much my sweet tea was. Yes, it was good. But for that price, I was expecting a much larger cup. I was left thirsty. It's literally the cheapest thing you could make and not some secret recipe requiring expertise; for that price point I expected more to slurp on. The energy ball was tasty. The coffee, I'm told, was OK. The smoothies matched their price point and tasted fresh.

I'm so glad we did! What we loved: * Friendly, welcoming owner and staff. * Excellent coffee. * Freshly made panini sandwiches. * Homemade pastries. * Clean restroom. * Fun local folk art throughout the café that gives the place such a great community vibe. What we ordered: * #1 Turkey Pesto Panini: Absolutely delicious. Fresh, flavorful, and made to order. It also came with a bag of chips and a large pickle, which was such a nice surprise. * Cherry turnover: Flaky, buttery, and filled with plenty of cherry filling. * Strawberry rhubarb pastry: Just as delicious. The perfect sweet treat with our coffee. I also wanted to mention that I respectfully disagree with the review that called this place "just okay." I've eaten at cafés all over the world, and this didn't feel or taste average to me at all. Everything tasted fresh, homemade, and thoughtfully prepared. You can feel the love that goes into running this place. Whether you're a local or just passing through San Luis Obispo, I would absolutely recommend stopping here. [Original 5-star review] One of two restaurants in Chama that I consider really good (the other is Outlaw BBQ). On our most recent visit, we had 3 pizzas: buffalo chicken (a special not on the regular menu), Yard Bird, and pepperoni. All were really good; the buffalo chicken was my favorite. I advise ordering, up front, everything you plan to drink. Having finished a great milk stout beer, and there being no sign of our food, I went back to get another and was firmly told to go to the end of the (food ordering) line. Before I got to order again, most of the beers, including the milk stout, had run dry. It was a half hour before I made it back to our table, but I did beat the pizzas.

They informed me today that they will no longer be selling Steep because they raised their prices. They are now selling allegro as their drip, and when asked if using corporate coffee would lower the price of their drip, they said no. As far as I'm concerned this is disingenuous and a pretty bad hustle. Other complaints include no visible pricing and random price switching (due to the lack of transparency). We will not be back. Please consider supporting the Steep roasting company ten minutes up the road, you can get a fresh bag for 2/3 the price that higher grounds sells it for anyway.
