I've stopped at a small town called Chama, New Mexico. I passed through here the other day and stopped at their little tourist center which was just adorable. This coffee shop (that I searched on Waze) has espresso and wonderful pastries, and incredible breakfast sandwiches. I just went for a pastry right now. But the coffee is superb. Two visits during our short stay in Chama. A late afternoon sandwich run, and a Saturday morning coffee stop. The pastrami & swiss on rye was good, but a caveat: the sandwiches are pre-made and then heated (or not, as you like) before serving. You can't customize the items on the sandwich. Good wine and beer selection, though I didn't sample. Next morning featured a steady trickle of folks coming in, some for takeout coffee, some to sit and connect to wi-fi while enjoying the sunshine. Service is a bit on the slow side, and they don't have an outside speaker to announce when orders are ready, so you have to listen for the shout from inside, or stay in the order area until yours is ready. read more

Ask how long it's going to take especially if you are riding the train. We quit ordering coffee here because you get stuck in some queue that you can't see and end up waiting what seems like forever. Also if you order something hot or even a pastry warmed up. We waited over 20 minutes for a pastry to be warmed and finally had to just ask for it as is and ran out. If any order is going to be more than 5 minutes, they really need to warn you. There may be no one inside in front of you, yet you wait 20 minutes. Was really annoying. read more

A coffee shop within walking distance from most of the lodges downtown - and in particular the Cumbres & Toltec Railway depot. They open early which is another plus. A large menu of coffee/tea menu, pastries and breakfast sandwiches. Loved the fall theme decor and menu to accompany. I had the hungry hunter bagel and the butter pecan latte... both hit the spot. Service was friendly. Indoor and outdoor seating. They have a decent evening menu and wine bar but that is only open Thursday- Saturday till 8 pm... so didn't get a chance to check out the pm experience this trip around. read more

The weekend meals that the owner, Elaina prepares, are seriously delicious! I've had 4 meals and each one has been delicious!!

Sadly I did not get any pictures, but this is the cutest little spot! It's got a cozy inside as well as outside seating with a fire pit. The service was excellent. We got coffee, a caramel toffee late, and the breakfast burrito. Our coffee was very good, but the breakfast burrito - easily the best breakfast burrito we've ever ate!!! It had chorizo, hash-browns, egg, peppers/onions, and cheese. When we come back, we'd love to try their lunch and supper! read more

Second time we've been. Coffee (we had the medium roast) was excellent as was service. This particular day the staff mentioned that at least two people did not show up for work - making her job a nightmare. I only overheard this, she was speaking to someone she knows.so kudos to her for keeping a friendly, caring service orientation during a busy morning. The pastries were ok, we also had an egg bagel who we both did not like so much, the flavor was good in my opinion, but the bagel too doughy/soft. These are pre made and baked in their oven. If they can figure out how to make these fresh on the fly, I think they would be much more appealing, The coffee was VERY good. I'll definitely go back for that, maybe more. We were surprised and pleased to learn that Rio Chama Espresso is open for dinner. I tried the Double Green Chile Cheeseburger. It was just okay. The buns were burnt (black) top and bottom. Still quite edible, just not as good as the green chile cheeseburger I'd had the day before, for less money, elsewhere in Chama. We were headed to Taos, NM from Durango, Co and wanted to grab a hot and tasty espresso beverage as it was a pretty chilly winters morning. There were two people ahead of us, and immediately, the woman behind the counter acknowledged us and advised that they were super short staffed. But she would be with us as soon as she could. We appreciated that she gave us the heads up, and happily waited. Drove up to Chama to explore the area and check out my friends wedding venue doing some wedding planing with the amazing venues owner and checking out the town, Inn's and Airbnb's that the wedding party and some guests will be staying at. I've been to Chama for the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad but we've always caught the train at the Colorado station and bussed back and never got to explore the town. The town is so cute! Love, love, loved Rio Chama Espresso employees were amazing and super helpful and patient as we decided what we wanted and making Accommodations being that I'm a veggie they made the Caprese sandwich without the bacon, it was Delicious!! We also tried the cranberry orange scone which is also amazing and the coffee was delightful, I got an almond milk latte with a pump of lavender. Loved the fire pit and outside seating, it was a cold day and started snowing while we were sitting outside but even with the cold the fire kept us nice and warm! Excited for the wedding and to come back and indulge in their coffee and bakery items! Will need to buy a bag of beans to take home too!! I promised myself I wouldn't "work" (aka blog) this weekend other than studying. However, lightbulb moments strike when you don't plan for them to, and when they do, it's even sweeter. We ended up at @riochamaespresso to use the bathroom and ended up ordering a Caprese flatbread with bacon, and a dairy free mango smoothie. (Mango is one of my favorites!) Everything was fresh and delicious (especially enjoyed the cheese pull), and the barista, Cassie was super sweet, bubbly (aka great personality) and eager to help. I ordered an espresso drink, a straight 10, scone, delicious and cake like, fantastic! I spent a lot of time chatting with staff Wendy and Cassie, totally delightful locals with lots of love for Chama and their customers. The lunch items looked delicious altho it was breakfast so a visit next time for lunch or dinner is on my radar. The dinner menu looks incredible and all pricing is affordable including prime rib dinner with potato, vegetable and desert! The owner takes reservations for dinner and also will cater meals for groups. Highly doable for larger parties with a good sized indoor area and generous space outside. After spending the night in Chama, we were looking for a place to grab breakfast since our hotel didn't provide any. Just like the night before, there weren't a whole lot of options. We found this spot on the Main Street through Chama. I ordered the roast beast sandwich and my wife had the avocado test and a peach smoothie. All the items were great! Only complaint was the price. My sandwich alone was $11, and the sandwich wasn't stuffed with as much ingredients for the cost. Plus, there was no side to accompany the sandwich. My wife loved her toast, and the smoothie did taste good. Seemed like one of (if not) the best options in town for breakfast. They were pretty quick too! read more

We went on a super busy weekend and it showed. The avocado toast was good but it's hard to mess that up. It would be nice if they offered an option to add tomatoes or an egg. Happy to find an independent coffee shop - complete with an outdoor (gas) fire pit in this beautiful, small, scenic railroad town! We noticed Chama as a cute mountain town when passing north to our campgrounds just south of Antonito, CO. We departed camp in the early morning (without coffee) for a 12-hour drive back to Texas and were relieved to find that this coffee shop was open! Great interior, plenty of baked goods, ample drink options and a western, flush toilet with hot, running water and hand soap were all such welcome features after having no plumbing and latrine-style only facilities at the campground for several days! This coffee shop had EXACTLY what we were looking for-and more-to make our long drive more enjoyable! We were pleasantly surprised to find such a nice coffee shop in such a small town. We even took a couple of minutes to enjoy the outdoor gas fire before getting back on the road! My only wish would be for a drive thru but it never hurts to get out of the car and stretch a bit! read more

This is a very cute little independent coffee shop in the beautiful village of Chama. My favorite part is the outdoor fire pit. It was a little cool in the morning, so sitting out by that fire pit was so nice. The coffee and the food were excellent. It was a little pricey, but well worth the money. We had about five people, so the order took a little long to fill, but the barista was super friendly and kept us engaged in conversation. I love the decor. The interior is your typical cute little cafe. The exterior is a wooden facade that looks perfect for the lovely rustic town of Chama. I only wish I had purchased a bag of coffee beans to take home with me! read more
