This was the worst experience I have ever had with an auto shop. My car was in the shop over 9 weeks, they butchered the wiring harness looking for shorts which was only coil #2. Then the hood close sensor was damaged and they performed the worst fix with a jumper wire I have ever seen. I build classic cars and engines as a hobby and I have never seen the incompetence I witnessed with this place. I am absolutely shocked and mortified by the workmanship. The owner never returned my call either. They lied about the status of the car throughout the process. They said they were working on it, only to discover it was sitting outside. When I picked it up, it was absolutely filthy, covered in dirt, greasy paw prints everywhere, no mat used in the inside. Stay away from this place! read more

Man, I was really hoping to give these guys 5 stars, but I found them maybe too disinterested in comprehensive care and their sense of urgency to be lacking. Seriously, you canNOT wait until 15 minutes before closing to tell a customer they won't be getting their car back until the next day. Many do not have the luxury of an extra vehicle in the garage. I had a trans oil leak and took the wheels there to get fixed, based on a buddy's rave recommendation. The next day I picked it up but received no great details about what they did or on recommended care/maintenance. Instead, I pressed: "Isn't trans oil supposed to be reddish-brown?" "Yes, exactly." "But mine is black..." "Yes." "Should I be thinking about a trans oil flush or something?" "Yeah, probably..." When Firestone changed my motor oil a month later, they wouldn't touch my transmission oil because they said they still saw it leaking. So I took it back RGA to have it double-checked, dropping it off by appointment at 9am, having fully explained the situation... Need a flush, and need you to double-check that leak you fixed. By 3:30 (1.5 hours before close), they hadn't checked in. I called for an update and was on hold for over 5 minutes before tech XYZ tells me they hadn't even looked at it yet. By 4:30 (30 minutes before close), no update. I call, no answer. Leave a message, no call back. At 4:45 I call back "Dude, what's going on? I need to arrange a ride there and stuff. And you close in like 15 minutes..." He tells me they got a late start, he's really sorry, they have to keep it overnight, but they'll get it pushed out first thing tomorrow morning. I'm extreeeeeeemely annoyed to have wasted my entire day off sitting at home without a vehicle because it sat in their lot unattended all day long, and frustrated that I have to arrange alternative transport for my kids at the last minute. I could've just taken it there the next day! I finally got a call the next afternoon - wiggly doohickeys may have been problematic, but they replaced them at no charge. So here's the thing. I don't think they're bad mechanics; oversight happens sometimes, I get it. They seem pretty honest and fair; their prices were reasonable, and they didn't try to sell me on a ton of additional services. But I think they prioritize their good ol' buddies (like my buddy who referred them) who've taken all their cars there for years and walk in to "Hey Man! Good to see you! How's it going today?" Can't say that I blame them, but it makes us outside the clique feel a little like rote business rather than valued customers. read more

Took my suv to Rio Grande Automotive to get my sensors fixed because they would all go on n then the gauges would go to 0. Also wanted for them to fix the oil leak in one of my gaskets. I needed to pass my emissions test n I had a code P0340 which was about my Cadillac convertor. I had previously taken my suv to a welder n he said I did not need it. Well Rio Grande did not fix my sensors and the oil leak got bigger. They told me they needed to clean my gaskets which were full of oil along with my spark plugs. When I picked up my suv they informed me one of my cylinders was out n I needed a new engine. Why did they not tell me this in advance, I would not have tried to fix my suv if I had known this. I paid $2100 for nothing! The sensors still all go on, the oil leak got worse n now my heater doesn't work! I took my suv back n all they said was my sensors come on cuz of my Cadillac convertor n the cylinder that is out n there is nothing they can do. Then they had the nerve to ask me if I wanted a quote to fix my heater! I was upset n told them, I did not come here to spend more money! They didn't care n went on to talk to another customer. Please do not take your vehicle to this business n do not trust them! I wasted $2100 of my savings which I was saving for a new car. I did not pass the emissions test but was given an extension for 1 year and am driving my suv with no heater n the sensors constantly on n the gauges go to zero. I have no other choice right now. Since they cleaned my gaskets n all why did they not fix the oil leak? Now I have to constantly check my oil. The leak was dime size n now are quarter size leaks. Very untrustworthy business who does not care about their customers. This shop is the embodiment of "come for one problem and they come up with all kinds of other bs to extort you for". I called these fools on a Thursday morning because my car wouldn't start, so I assumed it was my starter or alternator. Andrew said they could get me a diagnostic that day, just to eat my car into their shop parking lot, but imy diagnostic wasn't completed until the following Wednesday. This cost me the better part of one thousand dollars due to missing work because I couldn't get a rental until the diagnostic was complete. Don't let me forget to mention that Andrew had the nerve to tell me that the diagnostic was taking so long because they found "leaks" that were "hard to get to". Isnt That your f***ing job???? That aside, my car wouldn't start, which was the only reason I went to them, because I needed a battery. They ended up charging me $2,200 for everything. $3000 if lost wages are included, which I include. All for a dead battery. Needless to say, they are scam artists that disgust me and they should hope that they never meet me again...PS when I walked into the shop to pay them and pick up my car, there were other customers waiting out front complaining about horrible service as well. Sat in the office for less than 10 mins and they were able to secure my existing splash guard adequately, and he wouldn't even charge me to do it. This place is absolute garbage! I do not understand how others on here are rating this place so high! This place must be buying reviews or they are very sneaky and the customers on here haven't noticed that they were scammed. I love cars and I have been working on cars for many years. I rarely take my car to the mechanic because I believe that most mechanics are liars and scammers. The reason I came to this place was because of the high reviews on here. I had a car that was making a weird knock noise every time I shifted gears, made sharp turns, or made a quick stop. It seemed that a quick change in motion was causing this knocking noise. I needed to find out what it was because it could of been something possibly bad but I was feeling lazy that day so I took it to this place. When I brought it in, they looked at my car and tried to find the cause of it. It was free of charge which was awesome since most places charge to make a diagnoses. They told me it was my strut and that it was leaking and needed to be replaced for a total cost of $300 plus labor. I did not want to pay that much and it sounded like an easy fix that I could do myself. I take my car back to my garage, lift the car up, take the wheel off, take the strut off and I inspect it. I see absolutely nothing wrong with it.... I go to the other side of my car and inspect the other strut... nothing wrong again. What was this mechanic talking about?? I was standing next to my car that was on the lift when I noticed leaking from the engine area. Turns out that one of the hoses that runs coolant through the engine wasn't connected and it was wobbling around hitting everything as I drove, causing the knocking noise. Once I fixed that I never heard the knocking noise ever again. NO PARTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, JUST A DISCONNECTED HOSE. DO NOT GO HERE. EDIT: Billy, I am 100% sure this was the right shop. You guys are the only "Rio Grande Automotive" in Albuquerque... how can I possibly get you mixed up with some other garage? Maybe I will post an update review if I ever go there again and you guys actually diagnose my car CORRECTLY. These guys are Ace's Firestone on Central told me I needed front end work before they could a front end alignment on my car. They gave me a $300 estimate to do the work. When I took my car to Rio Grande Automotive to do the front end work I was told no repairs were needed, not even an alignment. I also had a "check engine" light on which turned out to be nothing as well. Rio Grande Automotive is going to be the only place I'll take my car in the future for any needed repair work. They have high ratings because they are honest and charge reasonable rates for the work they do. They deserve 10 stars!!!! read more

My wife's car needed breaks really bad. The front were squealing and the back grinding. I researched here on yelp for the best of the best. Liking the reviews I saw here, I called them up and they said sure, just bring it in. Today I brought it in and I balked a bit when I saw the very full parking lot. I handed my keys over and within 30 minutes my car was already in the bay, getting lifted and tires off. I was very surprised! They told me the rear rotors were damaged and the pads needed to be replaced, but there was nothing wrong with the front since it was just dust causing the squealing. Well I figured an astronomical price tag, but he said total would be just $220 plus tax. What? So cheap? Within two more hours, the car was done and I was on my way, which is good since my 18 month old son sad with me. Billy's like MTV -- take your money for nothing! I was referred to him specifically as a great mechanic who about VW's and Rv's. I brought in my Eurovan for some issue that kept killing my engine battery. I had 4 items for them to look at and after a day they called with results my RV "house batteries" were bad and not holding a charge and the alternator looked good. Regarding the high-pitch whine sound Billy thought the muffler may be installed backwards. I asked how could a person tell? He said you'd have to cut open up the muffler since it was welded on-- you could not tell just by looking. Hmmm There was an engine light that has on when I brought the vehicle in. I did not mention it-- I just thought if he was thorough they'd hook-up the instrument and read the code-- take less than 5 minutes. When I arrived to pick-up cost was $125. I paid and waited to hear from Billy what-all he found. Nada- nothing except old house batteries. As I'm about to leave he noticed the engine light and did the quick check-- and said he didn't have the book to know exactly what the code meant for this VW. ...? Why did he represent he was a good VW mechanic? So what did I get for $125...? a shuttle ride back n forth. ? Turns out the batteries needed more water (they never checked that) and they got me through the next week camping. Midas slid under the vehicle and showed me with a little mirror the A letter and the B letter -- which designate the direction a muffler is to be installed. It was done correctly. SO that's 2 strikes for Billy. The third strike was when the alternator was found to be bad-- intermittently do ok then suddenly not. Problem discovered on why 3 batteries were killed in less than a year. The guys at the Start Shop listened to what had been happening and left the alternator gauge on longer and sure enough-- it started spiking and dropping. When I asked Billy what he'd done for $125 and I wanted a refund-- he hung-up on me. After all this I heard from 3 other women they also felt taken advantage of at Rio Grande Automotive. I took my F150 in to have the turbo replaced. The job should have taken 6 hours according to the ford repair manual. I took it in on Monday and Friday at 4pm they were still working on it. (5 days later) In the mean time, while test driving my truck they broke the drive shaft. Billy the owner refused to pay for a new drive shaft. The shop should replace the drive shaft at no charge since the damage happened while in their possession. He argued and argue with me and never let me get a word in. It's impossible to reason with less intelligent people. I paid the full amount just to shut him up. I guess we'll settle in court. I posted a review on google and facebook. Billy replied to both my reviews and tried to intimidate, threaten, and bully me. Billy, the owner, is argumentative, immature, and unreasonable. NEVER USE THIS SHOP!! GO HERE! I'm a traveling superintendent and was in Albuquerque for a construction project in 2017-2018. I drive a 2010 F350 6.4 and tow a 15,500 lb Fifth-wheel. I had the pleasure of having Rio Grande Automotive recommended by one of my subcontractors when my check exhaust light went on. I needed to replace the particulate filter and Phil and the boys jumped right in. Leaving town a few months later my (low-mile) 6.4 lunched a lifter and littered the entire engine. Being in construction I was due at a new project some 1200 miles away in a week. I didn't hesitate to have the vehicle brought directly to RGA. The engine was a total loss and the guys had to install a crate engine from Ford. I had purchased a (crappy) warranty from the dealer when I bought the truck and RGA worked tirelessly to scrape out every penny they could from them. In the end I needed $5000 above what I got from warranty and could afford out-of-pocket and they got me a credit line for $5400. I was able to pay off the loan inside of a year and didn't pay a cent in interest! As a woman with limited knowledge about cars, i was hesitant about taking my vehicle to the mechanic but with many recommendations on nextdoor and positive reviews on yelp i trusted Rio Grande Automotive with my 01 Nissan Sentra. I was provided an estimate by Andrew, and told that my car would be ready in three days. after a lack of communication, i received a call where Andrew stated that they must keep my car for two more days. after the the two days, due to a conflict in schedule, my mom went in to pick up my car and they said that it's STILL not finished. A phone call would've been nice prior to my mom's arrival. additionally they stated, i must pay and bring it back on Monday. at this point they've had my car for an entire week and expressed no concern for my schedule or the inconvenience. My mom pays for the vehicle, unknowingly charged over two hundred dollars more than what was agreed upon in the estimate over the phone. when this was brought up with Andrew and the owner, Billy, they were unwilling to adjust to the promised price, while displaying extremely unprofessional behavior and mannerism. Important: I was told my car was "not a priority" which was the reason it took over twice as long as was promised. after a quick search on google, i discovered i was over charged for the majority item fixed in my car, while being promised discounts on labor because "they were already in the car to fix it". additionally, i was charged for items in my car without my prior approval, even though i expressed budget concerns upfront. i feel completely taken advantage of and scammed by Rio Grande Automotive and would not recommend that anyone ever step foot in this shop for their own health and well-being. (None of the mechanics were wearing masks even though a sign requiring customers to wear masks is clearly posted in the shop.) read more

I did a little research on the local Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealerships and based on what I found, I couldn't in good conscience take my Jeep to any of them. Took my car here for a diagnostic after being referred by another shop that did not do work on foreign cars like my Saab. Quoted me $1000 to replace the fuel pump and said that was definitely the problem, thought that was pretty high. I was able to do the job in 2 hours by myself for under $400, I shortly found out after I broke down again that the fuel pump wasn't the problem but the coil pack, which I was able to find out with a free obd scan from autozone. I wouldn't recommend this shop to anyone, seems like just another place that wants to take the most money from you without even helping at all. Edit: William, It was clearly the coil pack causing the problem and that fixed the issue right away. List price for the fuel pump at Napa was $600, asking $500 more for 2 hours of labor is absurd. I would assume a "professional" would perform an obd scan right away when the check engine light is on, instead of driving it until it dies and then quoting me the most expensive thing possible. Your responses to these bad reviews are enough to show how full of it you are, telling the guy he's talking about the wrong shop then telling me my car automatically has a lot of problems because I got it for a good price. I'm sure if I had taken it to your shop, it would have had plenty of problems until you actually did fix it. read more

Billy and the great folks at Rio Grande Automotive have been servicing my autos for nearly a decade. Top-notch service, reasonable prices. They won't try to sell you stuff you don't need. One of my vehicles, I had taken to another shop (before I discovered Rio Grande Automotive). Billy fixed the things they fouled up. No charge. I took my old pickup in to have them check it for safety so that my daughter could drive it and I wouldn't have to worry... they went through it and offered me several options. It's safe for anyone to drive, now. Kiddo decided she didn't want the pickup. Bought a mechanic's lien auto from Billy. He has supported that sale and made certain everything was right. Replaced the driver side mirror on my new(er) pickup for a nominal cost. When I had transmission trouble, took it to Rio Grande Automotive. I was expecting 2-3k for a new transmission. They flushed/filled the transmission and installed a new filter. That was over 3 years ago, and still shifting like new. $200, as I recall. One drawback, and this is understandable...they are busy. I was a little frustrated with my visit. I haven't established a car maintenance place since moving to Albuquerque so I chose this place based on all of the very positive reviews. I have my 60,000 maintenance coming up soon so I wanted to establish a relationship and get my oil changed with them first. I made an appointment and came in around 10am. They told me it'd be about a half hour which I thought sounded fast, but went for a walk and came back 30 min later. They apologized, said they were running a little behind, and it would be a little longer. No problem. An hour went by, apologies again, "sorry just a few minutes he just has a few more things to do". And again. And again. Finally at 1130 they come out and ask if synthetic oil is okay-- they were just changing it! So after an hour and 45 minutes they finally finished JUST an oil change, literally!! On my way home the windshield washer fluid light came on! I have never been to a place that doesn't check and top off all your levels, and most give you a run down of how everything looks. They obviously didnt look over anything else if even the washer fluid wasn't filled!!! I know oil changes aren't their bread and butter, but it doesn't set a very good example for their attention to detail if they cant even do a proper check over when doing an oil change! If you want your vehicle to be at risk for damage then by all means take your vehicle to Rio Grande Automotive. I took my truck in to get my spark plugs changed. When I picked it up and started it up the engine light came on right away. I went back in to let the manager/owner know right away. He took his sweet time in getting my truck back in and getting the engine light problem resolved. When I asked him what the problem was he just gave me the brush off and told me it had to do with something they were working on when changing the plugs. It also took them another hour to get the engine light issue resolved. They had not concern whatsoever about the fact that the engine light was not coming on when I took my truck in. I only took it in for routine maintenance; the change of the spark plugs. Low and behold I found out afterwards that they put the wrong spark plugs in my truck! I couldn't figure out why the truck kept shaking and finally I took it to a certified mechanic. He told me whoever replaced my plugs put the wrong ones in!!! That is why the engine light came on and who knows what the crooks did to get the engine light resolved. I would never recommend this auto repair shop to anyone. And by the way, while I was waiting another customer came in to complain about the problems he was having with an engine rebuild Rio Grande had done. The manager/owner was embarrassed but treated the customer as he did me...he acted like it was no big deal. If you want your engine messed up then this is the place to take your vehicle. read more
