I've been all over this country and this is one of the best coffee shops around the people here are outstanding. The service is top-tier, the coffee and food are exceptional, there's nothing not to like about this place. If you're in California it's worth stopping by.

One of the best parts of Yelp is finding those diamonds in the rough. Rio Java Coffee House is easy to miss in the Food 4 Less shopping center at Rio Linda Blvd and Elkhorn, but it is worth a drive. You can literally see the Starbucks across the street from inside the coffee shop! Parking is decent and shared with the rest of the center. The outside is rather unassuming, but the sticker on the front door announcing their use of Temple Coffee was a really good sign. Inside, the owners have turned a rather basic commercial space into a nice and homey design with soft furniture and fun signs on the wall. The menu is rather expansive with a focus on espresso drinks. They do offer prepackaged food. On my visit I got a nice espresso and an old fashioned Moon Pie. The wait time was a bit long, but there was only one person working so that is expected. The coffee was worth the wait especially given the lack of good places in the area. The basic espresso was pulled nicely, and the other customers seemed to enjoy their drinks as well. Now that we are coming out of our COVID shells, it is a perfect time to meet a friend at a coffee shop. Rio Java Coffee House is perfect for those living in Rio Linda, but it is also a short drive from North Natomas or North Highlands too. A little rough around the edges, but who isn't these days!

I found Maestro after a Google Maps search, and chose to try them based on their solid reviews and uniqueness! I was not prepared for this level of pizazz!!! I ended up finding their take on my favorite coffee drink (Kerouac), and I was able to order it large - score!! It was muy, muy delicioso until the very last drop. On top of that, being very hungry and wanting breakfast, I was recommended a lovely turkey or ham croissant - and when additions were suggested, I just asked for eeeeeeverything (bacon, avocado, etc.). And guess what? That breakfast sando was eeeeeeverything!!! It blew my mind!! My neck was sore after all was said and done, because I kept shaking my head in disbelief, saying to myself things like "aww man this is GOOD" and "mmmMMM"!! Anyway, on top of this, the kind and happy folks making the magic happen behind the counter were fun, efficient, and receptive to me projecting all of my enthusiasm their way, haha. And yes the joint itself looks very nice and has ample seating, despite the narrow space. This place deserves all the love, all the attention, and all of the business!! Indeed, I had an amazing first experience - and it was no surprise that they had a line out the door. Thank you, Maestro for an unforgettable experience. I know where my new favorite coffee/breakfast place is!!! ^_^

I went to Jimmy's donuts on a cold Sunday morning to give them a shot. Located in Rio Linda, Jimmy's Donuts looks like a place from yesteryear. It has an old looking facade and not a whole lot of modern touches anywhere. I'm not sure how long Jimmy's has been in operation, but from the looks of it, it's been a long time. Jimmy's has all the classic donuts that you could be looking for. There are the rounds, the bars, the old fashioned, buttermilk, etc. You can also get larger treats like bear claws and fritters. I went ahead and got a little more than a dozen so that I could get a good taste of how these donuts were. In all, I'd say the donuts were extremely solid. I was a little wary of the maple donuts at first because the maple they put on the top looked a little paler than I'm used to seeing, but it was still good. In fact, the chocolate and maple toppings had a nice light touch to them. You can't go wrong with these donuts as they are classic and are made just the way they should be. One surprise from Jimmy's had to be the custard filling that they used. They actually had some bars filled with custard, which I thought was unique. I gave one a try and genuinely thought it was a great idea that other places should do as well. I love custard so the more the better. There were also bear claws filled with apple. Again, I hadn't seen this sort of thing done at most places so I'd have to give Jimmy's credit for having a few unique offerings. If you're thirsty, there are a number of drink options that you can select from out of the cold cases to the right of the store. Jimmy's is a simple operation without much frill. That's totally ok as they aren't trying to be more than what they are - a solid donut shop.

I ordered online through Yelp and I will say, it was a wonky experience. I didn't order a large yet my drink was large and the ticket that printed for the drink said large? Weird. I chose for the sugar to be adjusted to 80% sugar and the ticket/label on the cup read 50%. Weird. So yeah, like zero starts for the ordering system (I think it's powered through DoorDash?) but it's not the staff's issue or fault. Order Taro Milk tea with boba. Nice flavor and ok sweetness, despite it being somehow dropped to 50%

Would've preferred more boba but the taro flavor and sweetness was solid. 4/5 popcorn chicken that you can season yourself. Generous portion overflowing the container. Chicken was hot and crispy. 2.5/5 cheese sticks. Did not care for the flavor or breading on these. Service was great, super friendly. Seemed family owned. Grabbed it to go, but waited inside and it was warm and muggy. Felt like the AC was at 80 so not very comfortable at all. My food was good and I got 2 drinks and 2 apps for $30 which felt reasonable. Boba presentation wasn't amazing but the boba was yummy so that's what's important. I'll go back for takeout but wouldn't recommend hanging out inside for their AC :)

We especially excited to try the instant ramen maker. We walked in and ordered in the kiosk. The menu had different teas, mochi donuts, dumplings, corndogs, and other snacks. However, after ordering we noticed the ramen wasn't on there. We asked the staff and they said the ramen maker wasn't working so that was disappointing. They were also out of something I ordered and they were able to refund me. The drinks and food took a bit to come out. The wonton and dumplings were ok, but the soup it came in was pretty good. The taro drink and mochi dog we got were good. Inside was very picturesque with a good amount of seating. The ramen wall was impressive and had a good selection. It served more for a decoration that day than for eating. But we loved the cute tree and floral wall. They also had some games for you to play with while waiting. Overall everything was ok but maybe we'll be back to give it another try.

The Americano here is easily the best I've had--bold, full of flavor, and not watered down like you get at a lot of bigger chain spots. You can tell it's made with intention. It actually tastes like coffee is supposed to taste. The pastries were just as impressive. The Biscoff cheesecake was rich and balanced without being overly heavy, with that warm, caramelized flavor that really stands out. The blueberry muffin tasted fresh and real--not overly sweet, just done right. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere sets the tone. The music is calm and relaxing, the chairs are genuinely comfortable (not the typical stiff coffee shop seating), and the entire space feels less like a business and more like sitting in a welcoming home--a nice home where you actually want to stay awhile. But what really sets this place apart is the experience. Abdul didn't just take our order-- he genuinely engaged with us. He was friendly, thoughtful, and took the time to explain the concept behind the space, including how it connects to the location and atmosphere. That kind of interaction is rare, and it completely changed the tone of the visit. This isn't a place you rush in and out of. It feels built for conversation--for sitting down, slowing down, and actually connecting with the people you're with. It's a refreshing change from the typical coffee chain experience where everything feels standardized and transactional. Another standout is that the menu is halal, which makes this an easy and welcoming choice for anyone looking for halal options without having to second guess what they're ordering. If you're looking for more than just caffeine--if you want a place that values community, comfort, and real human connection--this is absolutely worth your time. This place reminded me what a coffee shop is supposed to be.
