It had been years since my last visit, so it felt like a brand-new experience. I made a reservation online, though it wasn't really necessary that evening. Still, it's a plus that you can easily choose between indoor and outdoor seating when booking. Parking in their onsite lot is another convenience. The restaurant has a cozy, intimate feel, and there's a small bar that offers a happy hour Tuesday through Friday from 4-7 PM. We started with cocktails: a refreshing white sangria with mango and a mojito. Both were well-made and reasonably priced--$7 and $8. For appetizers, we had the coconut shrimp served over sliced plantains with a lemongrass sauce. The flavors were good, but the shrimp were noticeably over-fried (see my video), which took away from what could have been a standout dish. Sonora's menu offers a diverse Latin-inspired selection with dishes from South America, Cuba, Mexico, Portugal, and Puerto Rico. I was intrigued by the variety. I chose a Cuban-inspired dish: Angus skirt steak served with lobster and plantain fried rice and topped with a quail egg saffron lime garlic mojito sauce. The steak was tender and cooked to order, but the fried rice was underwhelming--just a hint of lobster flavor with only a few tiny pieces of lobster. The quail egg was nicely done. My friend ordered a Colombian dish: chicken stuffed with sweet plantain, goat cheese, peppers, and chorizo, served with saffron mashed potatoes and a sweet sherry sauce. She loved it and said the portion size was generous--I passed on a taste but took her word for it! They also offer brunch, jazz nights, and a paella night, which I'd love to check out in the future. I'll definitely return when the weather is warmer to enjoy their outdoor seating.

As for the food, everything was great. My mother in law had the whole branzino which was fresh and perfectly cooked and seasoned. My seafood rice dish had plenty of shrimp and scallops and included lobster. It was a huge portion. My wife's ribeye was perfectly cooked medium rare. The menu is very reasonably priced and the service was excellent. I highly recommend.

We came on a Saturday night around 8:00pm and the restaurant was packed, with diners filling every room and even the bar area. Thankfully we had reservations and were seated right away. Parking can get tight on busy nights, so we used the valet, which made things easier. We started with a table favorite, chouriço, perfect for sharing while settling in. I ordered one of my go-to Portuguese dishes, Carne à Alentejana, tender cubes of pork loin sautéed with little neck clams, wine, and fresh cilantro. It delivered exactly what I was hoping for, savory, balanced, and deeply comforting. Others at the table enjoyed the broiled Mediterranean octopus and the Chilean sea bass with caper sauce, both well prepared. Service was attentive throughout, and they even offer to take a table photo for you. Portions are generous, the dining room is spotless, and the classic crumb-scraping after the meal is a nice old-school touch. Short of heading to Newark's Portuguese enclave, this is one of the best options in the area.

It's styled as Peruvian, but has many common traits with other Hispanic, Caribbean and South American food cultures like Dominican and Colombian. It is very popular with construction contractors getting lunch on the go and the line can go out the door mainly for getting a filling meal for $6. The variety of food differs every day. There is usually a beef, chicken and/or pork stew, pernil, grilled steak ($10), fried fish, etc with a couple of choices of rice and beans (black or pinto). I sometimes ask for a piece of cassava, tostone or an empanada (+$2) on the side. Sometimes it's a crap shoot when it looks really good in the tray but is awful when you start eating it. If you ever see the gallina, stay the hell away. It's the oldest, toughest, orneriest chicken you'll ever come across. Remember Jack Palance's character, the tough, old, grizzled cowpoke, Curly from City Slickers? They made a stew out of him. You'll never get a gourmet meal here, but if you want cheap and quick, you could do a lot worse. Which is why we keep coming back, because we're cheap AF.

Service was incredible: they were patient with me as I tried to decide on what to order, ultimately going with an iced latte, pao de queijo and a coxinha, in my broken Portuguese. The coxinha reminded me of croquetas in Florida, a fried ball filled with delicious chicken and cheese. The pao de queijo, also amazing, just reminded me that Brazilians have the best ideas when it comes to bread! I did not order a sweet, but they had some very appealing brigadeiros and passion fruit mousse. They have a small seating area inside and out front, on the sidewalk. The inside seating area is filled with products from Brazil, showing that Araras, like its name suggests, is coffee AND more. There are a variety of products, like snacks and cooking staples, as well as skin care products and some small kitchen necessities (like stove-top coffee makers), reminding me of the importance of places like Araras for Brazilians living in the community who want to feel a slice of home.

My suggestion is to order your coffee at the register to-go while you're waiting to be seated. It makes the time fly by! The cafe is cozy and welcoming. The decor is warm and celebrates coffee, a true highlight of the restaurant. Their pastries look inviting and truly decadent. The ladies behind the register and server at our table are all so pleasant and helpful. Our server, Mariana, was very knowledgeable of the menu and suggested options to us for specific food allergies. Mariana is kind, helpful, and really makes you feel taken care of. Their coffee beans have a perfect acidity and chocolatey note, making the coffee taste flavorful, rich, and smooth. Both coffee and espresso drinks are served to perfection. Their hot drip coffee is very smooth and may be one of the best coffees I've had. I also love the Maple Cinnamon Latte with almond milk. It is complex in flavor and perfectly sweetened to my liking. Sweet Pea's is popular for their pão de queijo, a Brazilian cheese bread, which is gluten free. It is the BEST pão de queijo I've tried. It's perfectly salty, buttery, and fluffy. Just wow. They have many options for sandwich fillings with this bread, both savory and sweet. The Old Farmer's Breakfast is a hearty dish. The scrambled eggs are fluffy and seasoned well. The bacon is crispy and makes the dish have the perfect balance of savory and sweet. The gluten free pancakes are flavorful but slightly drier than an average pancake, so do dunk them in a little maple syrup to give them that just-right texture. If you are gluten free, it is worthy to note that cross-contamination is possible from their pancake grill. The dish is so filling and recommended! I would absolutely come back to try more dishes and coffee creations.

There is a take-away area at the front where you can purchase breads, arepas, and other easily portable foods, in addition to the tables and seating area in the back of the restaurant. We opted to dine-in for breakfast and try a variety of plates: calentado, arepa con chicharron, morcilla, and bunuelos. The calentado transported me back to Medellin and, honestly, it kept me full for the entire day. The morchilla, arepas, and chicharrones were cooked to perfection and we were provided with a variety of sauces to add an extra boost of flavor. Absolutely everything was delicious and the prices are incredibly reasonable when compared with the other breakfast restaurants in the area. The service was very friendly and attentive. Most of the clients spoke Spanish, including us, but we did hear them speaking English with a few tables that morning. The shrimp was firm, tasty and their accompaniments worked well. Our entrees were New York strip steaks cooked medium rare. The one was cooked a little bit less but it worked well for us because I like it cooked at a lower level and we shared them appropriately. The sides were the mushrooms and spinach, loaded potato, and Brussels sprouts,m. Everything was cooked perfectly and was just the perfect accompaniment. We were done and siated , but because it was a special birthday, they come to us with an offer of a Keylime pie, candle and a brief celebration. What an amazing experience Tony came by and offered us an after dinner drink which we gracefully accepted. I highly recommend this place.
