If I could give this place less than one star I would for the food. The waiter was very nice and fast, but we were the only people in the restaurant. The food was so bad that after my son and I took one bite we both said that there's absolutely no way we are eating another bite. Downtown location, near the megamall and movie theater. Ambience was "neighborhood" in the very best way. We were seated right away, table received water (like the idea of reusing tequila bottles for table water!) and got menus. Thankfully the server timing was good: not that "here I am, let's hurry" you get from some places but there on good time. The food was excellent: I had the pollo mole, and it was the best mole I've had in many a year. The mezcal margarita was a great idea and drink as well. Salsa Picante has changed its name to Roof Taco. Same owner and same location. The kitchen and service have changed for the worse. Menu prices are higher and portions are smaller. We were a table of 4 adults at 6:15 Friday night. Only 3 other tables were seated at the time. We ordered drinks which came immediately. But the food took forever to arrive even though the restaurant was basically empty. We asked the waiter why and he just shrugged and walked away. My enchiladas finally arrived (cold) and the portion was much smaller, drier and the tortilla was harder than previous visits. My friends ordered tostadas, and the shrimp special so nothing should have taken long to come out of the kitchen. The mediocre food left us asking WHY the owners changed a good thing. Great restaurant, the food is good and the staff is always very friendly when I go. Their margaritas are really good too. A few of those and it's definitely a good times. Parking can some times be challenging, but most times you can find parking without too much waiting. I highly recommend you try their burritos, tacos and tortas. Delicious! Ate here tonight and ordered the salmon with mango sauce and my girlfriend ordered a shrimp dish. We both had mango Margaritas. The salmon was clearly not fresh, and it was obvious from our direct view into the kitchen through an open curtain, that it was put on the grill frozen. Nevertheless, it tasted pretty good as were the shrimp. The drinks were great, as was the service. The restaurant falls short on cleanliness. While I can let the dried salsa on the menu go, I was absolutely shocked when I watched the grill cook retrieve a spatula she dropped onto the floor and then immediately use it to flip foods on the grill. Salsa Picante is a delicious Latin American restaurant that commits to making simple flavors explode in the way they are supposed to be; completely natural and delicious. Tonight they accommodated about thirty (yes, 30) of us via one of their dining rooms and their outdoor patio (lots of seating options if you're struggling with the idea of eating out again). They even went as far to separate our checks without asking us as they assumed it would be the most efficient way for all of us to pay. The service is unmatched; these servers are incredibly attentive and are more then cheerful when bringing over your third or fourth bowl of complimentary chips and salsa. The ONLY complaint that I had was that the plantains were a bit tough for my taste, but that's a personal opinion and should not discredit this great hidden gem in Port Chester! Well to start I will say the food was definitely 4 stars. So if you're coming here solely for that than you're in good hands. Overall I have Salsa Picante 2 stars for multiple reasons. Let's talk about the drink situations. Mexican restaurant usually = margaritas. Here at Salsa Picante there are only two flavors- Passion Fruit and Mango. That's fine, I guess, but $2 extra for one of the two flavors they offer makes a flavored margarita $14 a pop. I'm sorry but neither of my Margaritas were worth $14 at all. Not to mention that is way too much for a drink in this particular location at this particular spot. That brings me to my next contribution of points towards my stars. I'm all for the yelp incentives. I specifically came here for the free margarita offered upon check in. When we asked our waiter about it, prior to ordering drinks, he said it was only valid for lunch. What?!!!! That doesn't even make sense. Not only does it mention NOTHING about the margarita only being free at lunch time, but who the hell has a margarita with lunch! Maybe a Princess or a God, but not me! Lastly, I felt like the menu was limited. I went there with the intentions of having Fajitas, but they weren't on the menu. On the bright side they did keep refilling us with chips and Salsa as we finished each bath. My Shrimp Tortas were very very good, however they do use baby shrimp. The rice and beans were decent as well. All in all if you're looking for pretty good tasting inexpensive Mexican food, and you're in this area, I'd say give Salsa Picante a shot, but make sure you have a margarita else where. I ate here again with my family tonight. As always, the food is excellent and the portions plentiful. For the first time I had the Padron platter - a small chicken enchilada, shrimp tostada and steak burrito. It was all very well seasoned and delicious. The service is also very friendly and kind. Had dinner here one evening based on all of the good Yelp reviews. I ordered the Queso Fundido, a side of Guacamole, and the Nachos with Chorizo sausage. I was served a basket of chips and what I assume is their House salsa. The chips were much thicker than I am accustomed to. Some were good, other tasted stale, and a number of them were inedible. They were stuck together and the texture when one put them in one's mouth was so chewy as to be unpleasant. The Queso Fundido was bland and very greasy. I ate some of it, but due to the amount of grease, I abandoned it. I asked for some hot sauce, and received three soufflé cups of three different sauces - one green, two red. The green sauce was rather bland to my palate, but the two reds were outstanding. Both were tasty, hot, and smoky! I completely destroyed the two reds and would have licked the serving cups clean if I thought I could have gotten away with it! The Guacamole was decent enough. Served in a large Granite looking Molcajete bowl. It could have used some seasoning though. I added some of one of the red sauces into the guacamole to give it some additional flavor. The Nachos were also to greasy - due to the Chorizo sausage. I'd come back here again, but perhaps order something else - with either steak or chicken instead. Service was very good. read more

We all enjoyed our plates and everyone ordered something different so we could try a little bit of everything lol. We also got churros for dessert which were really good also. Came in for take out with a co-worker of mine during lunch time. I ordered the Chicken burrito and my friend ordered the veggie burrito. The chicken burrito came with a side of yellow veggie rice and black beans. Size was pretty big but lacked in flavor a lot and it was messy. The wrap was super sloppy, couldn't even hold its shape. I've been to Mexico many times and love burritos/tacos! This burrito lacked authentic flavor and structure. The chicken was the worst part for me; it was super over seasoned. The chicken had a bright orange tint to it as if it was smothered in Goya seasoning. It was so salty! As I am writing this review I am chugging down waters to get the salt out of my mouth. That is a sign that if they have over salted their food they don't really know what they are doing. As for the rice it was good but not blown away.. beans had to have been the star of this dish. They would be the only reason that I would come back. If you want authentic Mexican food then this isn't the place for you. I couldn't even finish my dish because of how salty it was. read more

If you could give 1/2 a star my rating would be 4.5. My daughter and I enjoyed lunch there recently. Based on previous Yelp reviews on Mexican restaurants in Port Chester was the reason we chose to go here. We were initially one of two parties but soon after several groups arrived. Families, couples and students. Nice Mexican music was playing while we dined and the staff was plentiful and friendly. We were handed two menus although neither menu had lunch specials. On their website, lunch specials were available and since it did not specific days, I incorrectly assumed we'd be ok on a Saturday. When we asked about lunch, we were pointed to two items on the dinner menu that would be offered as a "brunch" for $16.95. The choices were Burrito Salsa Picante which is a giant burrito or Burritos (3). Not really much of a choice. The second burrito plate offered three burritos with a choice of either chicken, steak or shrimp but the water told my daughter she could only choose two. Sangria or a Margarita was included in the brunch. My daughter had wanted Chimichangas and not burritos. so we decided to only order one "brunch" entree. We ordered 2 steak and one chicken burritos. The flavors in both the burritos and the chimmie's were delicious and moist. Each entree came with a side of rice and beans. Again very good as were the complimentary chips and salsa. We were offered more chips after we finished our basket w/o asking. Only after I got home did I realize that coffee and tea were also included in the "brunch" deal which was not brought to our attention. Also both entrees were the same price but mine was not offered with a drink so subsequently I had a Mexican soda which was tasty. The place is not large, on the small side and if you are handicap you would have a difficult time walking down the stairs to enter the restaurant. I counted 9 separate tables inside and 3 outdoors although I may be off by a few. They have one bathroom, male/female. There is a pay for municipal light across the street so parking is convenient I would return when lunch is offered. read more

Salsa Picante Burrito is good but the price is a absolutely crazy! $18 for a steak burrito is absolutely insane. Just the typical steak, lettuce and beans and veggies. For this price there should be a lobster or prime cut ribeye in there. It's even more expensive than Manhattan! I ordered for delivery nachos with chicken. They charged me $17 for 7 tortilla chips with cheese on it. I ordered chicken fingers with fries and got overcooked fries and a steak thrown on a taco shell. $60 for food and it was like setting fire to the money. Cane here a second time, the first time we had a great experience,we came here a second time for our anniversary and again food was spot on, the wait staff was very attentive. I had the garlic shrimp well seasoned and the side of guac was also amazing, the only regret was the frozen drinks machine was broken. These tacos are probably the worst tacos I've ever had in my entire life. The chips and salsa that they give you in the beginning need some serious work. The chips are SO THICK and overly done. And they have no salt on them. Terrible terrible terrible. The tortillas are AWFUL. They need to be cooked, they taste like rubber to be completely honest. I'm not sure how they managed to mess that up. I tried shrimp tacos, and the carne asada, I had to add salt and hot sauce just for some type of flavor because there was none. The steak was also so chewy so it wasn't enjoyable. Lastly, the service ... our waiter was nice enough but nothing too special for me to ever want to come back. The drinks are good and strong however a little pricy and the vibe here is always dead so it's kind of a buzz kill. The first time I dined here I had a pretty nice experience so I recommended to some coworkers that we have some after work drinks here. What a mistake. The waitress had such an attitude and clearly did not want to be bothered with us. It was a little after 4pm on a Friday (and the restaurant was EMPTY. We ordered margaritas and the server asked if we wanted salt. Two of us said "no salt" but they can with salt anyway. Ok no biggie. Then we ordered guacamole and had to ask for chips. TWICE. Were we supposed to eat the guac without chips?? No chips and salsa either until we asked. Then there was this constant clearing away of things without asking...they took my friend's drink without asking and then after we paid and left the tip in the folder, instead of leaving us alone to sit, another girl came over and asked if she could take the tip folder!!! Salsa Picante leaves a lot to be desired. I've been to a variety of Mexican restaurants and this one takes the cake as the worst that I've been to- all time. Scratch that, of all the restaurants that I've been to in my lifetime, this has had to be the worst. First, they start you off with chips and salsa. Chips? Stale. Salsa? Comparable to the $.89 tomato paste available at your local supermarket with a few additives. It's clear that they aren't making their own salsa from fresh tomatoes. The chips were disappointing because you could see the contrast between the last batch and a more recent one. Proper protocol would have been to waste out the old chips, but rather they were combined with a fresher batch to ruin the whole. I had to pick out the fresher chips from the inedible ones. Their yellow and green sauces were okay. That with the chips were probably the highlight of my meal. The food: I ordered a veggie burrito and veggie tacos, which came with a side of rice and beans. I started off with the burritos, and oh lord upon opening I knew I was about to eat a sh*tstorm. DIAGONALLY CUT almost from corner to corner... I don't even know... It tasted like Chexican food (Chinese Mexican food, which is actually nice when you know what you're expecting) attempted very poorly. It's extremely hard for me to believe that this restaurant is authentic considering I couldn't taste one bit of sabor. I can't say much about the burrito other than that the sauces couldn't do anything to save it regardless of the amount added. The tacos made me wonder why the food took so long to prepare; they weren't warmed (vegetables were freezing cold and it wasn't from the guac). 35 minutes for two minimum prep tacos and a grilled vegetable burrito? The wait time was exactly what inclined me to change the meal from a sit into a take out. The guacamole, which is a huge component of the taco [and what I paid more for] was basically avocado puree with ZERO salt. Everything was as tasteless as the guacamole. I must give props to this establishment though. They were the first ever able to make me rice and beans that tasted like spoiled milk. Seriously, that stuff tasted rancid, which I didn't know was possible for this food. Service: Service was mediocre at best. It was bland, which I see is a common trend at this restaurant. They gave us chips promptly and took our order at good timing. The eye roll when I asked for the food to be packed up was priceless. Excuse me for needing to be elsewhere. I work in management and if one of my staff members had less than a "can do attitude" they'd have one chance left. Considering I was pleasant and patient the whole time, I'd at least expect one smile. To conclude this essay of a review, I'd like to advise everyone to go to their local Chinese owned Mexican restaurant. You can get the same food with better flavor for less than half of the price. (less than $15 for 3 tacos and a burrito vs $35 for 2 juices, 2 tacos, and a burrito- rice included). Taco Bell has superior food and service to this restaurant, which is a great shame. Worst Mexican food ever! Ordered pollo mole poblano and carne asada salsa picante style for take out. Chicken in Pollo mole poblano tasted stale. Like the chicken was frozen for very long time and thawed incorrectly. It smelled weird. The sauce was disappointing too. All we could taste was cinnamon. Crane asada wasn't seasoned at all. Just unseasoned stake served on the bed of salad. The sauces given with the order were so so so less in quantities. First of all, we selected this location because we were looking for a Mexican Restaurant in this area since we wanted to do an outing here. At first the store front was unassuming, we figured this was the place and were both pleasantly surprised to see how warm and inviting this place really is. We were quickly greeted and made to feel welcomed as we were taken to our seats. The staff was courteous and prompt at returning our orders. The food we chose was delicious and the amounts we received were more than I expected as I had a lot of leftovers to take home. I've given them 5 stars because the service was good although the salsa was not that Picante and the coffee wasn't as good as I'd hoped for, but who goes to a Mexican Restaurant for coffee anyway?
