Absolutely incredible gluten-free bakery located in the heart of Adams Morgan. This cute little shop may look unassuming from the outside, but they're home to some of the most talented baking magicians who've somehow managed to craft DC's best gluten-free pastries that somehow have all the textures and flavors of their gluten-having cousins. I dropped by Rise Bakery pretty late on a Sunday afternoon, so they had already sold out of a bunch of things. The staff was super friendly and noted that customers should try to arrive before 10 AM on the weekends if there's something specific they want since Rise tends to sell out of their popular items pretty quickly. At the staff's recommendation, I decided to get the chocolate eclair, which was both phenomenal and massive. The choux pastry was super light and airy and had the signature firm, slightly crisp outer shell. That shell served as the perfect canvas for the melted chocolate, and the chocolate ganache inside the eclair was rich, creamy, and decadent. The eclair was probably double the size of a standard eclair, and I was thoroughly impressed by how well it had come together -- eclairs are hard enough to make when you're using normal flour, but this was super impressive and didn't taste like it was gluten-free at all. read more

Last night, I tasted the gingerbread cookies and Yule log from Rise Bakery. I would have never known they were gluten free. The gingerbread cookies were adorable and tasted great. Totally amazing gluten-free! This is my first time visiting, and I am blown away by how delicious everything is. My husband and I split a smoked ham and Gruyère panini, and a ham and cheese croissant. Both were equally delicious. We couldn't choose a favorite. We got the oatmeal cherry cookie, the eclair, almond croissants and a chocolate croissant. The croissants are among their most popular items, and we can see why. Amazing!!! I had a day off during a work trip and spent the entire day going back and forth between Rise & a nearby coffee shop to work. My only wish is that they had wifi or a larger seating area to be able to hang out there! I had a bagel sandwich for breakfast which was amazing - fresh, a bit crunchy, and flavorful - I didn't love the square eggs, but I know many places mass prepare eggs in that way for sandwiches. Was excited to try Rise and popped by in the afternoon on a Friday. Was surprised to find they don't have a huge collection of baked goods apart from mostly cupcakes. Was dying for something simple like a croissant or a more savory treat and they didn't have any. Opted for a tea and a apple turnover. The turnover was great! Would be much better warmed up (that wasn't offered as an option so I'm assuming they don't warm things up). Had a nice crust like a pop tart and wasn't too sweet. Tasty regardless of whether you're gluten free or not! The tea was also good but it's hard to mess up tea. The place is pretty small, no seating available. Staff were fast and professional but not necessarily warm. The only complaint is that it's pretty expensive. About $6 for a pretty small pastry and $5 for a cup of tea. I'm fine paying a premium for baked good but tea...I could understand a $5 cup of coffee but tea? Anyways, a nice treat if you're in the area but they don't have a huge selection so no need to come out of your way to go here unless of course you're gluten free in which case this is a great option. read more

I'm a symptomatic Celiac and Rise Bakery is my ultimate dream! Seriously, I've been gluten free for 13 years, and it's such a joyous relief to go somewhere where you don't have to ask questions or worry about cross contamination. Everyone who works here is kind and welcoming. I giggled over some celiac books (pictured--wish I bought them!). I ordered a chocolate croissant, a cannoli, and a pack of jalapeño cheddar buns. The former two were delicious, as expected, the dough on the croissant in particular being flakery and buttery. I have yet to try the buns, but they look divine, and I'm excited to toast them and use them for burgers! Overall, I can't recommend this place enough. Wish I lived closer! read more

A gluten free bakery with goods that don't taste gluten free?! Oh yes! Food: For breakfast, I devoured the vegan avocado toast - with bacon added - on a biscuit. It was delicious! I also took a chocolate croissant for later, which I've never seen gluten free; it was heavy and had a baking powder-like taste every few bites (maybe it's taste better warmed?). I did take a few bites of the cinnamon roll, which was much better. Service: Friendly, patient, and non judgmental as I oo'ed and aah'ed over too many choices! I love that there's a very cute and accessible gluten free bakery in Adams Morgan, but sadly I can't give it the endorsement that I was hoping to. First, the prices are sky high. DC is certainly a cupcake haven, and people are more than willing to dish out $5 or more for a single cupcake in Georgetown. But the $3.50 price point for these cupcakes is hard to justify considering the size and the taste. The sandwiches are also quite expensive. I ordered an eclair, tiramisu, and vanilla confetti cupcake. Sadly, I didn't enjoy any of the pastries. It isn't that a pastry needs gluten to be good--D'Light cafe down the street has amazing gluten free options. The pastries just tasted stale, a little burnt, and overly dense. After spending $15+ for three small mediocre pastries, I am sad that I can't endorse this place. But I love that it exists and I hope that with a couple small changes, it becomes a gluten free paradise! read more

It's rare to find croissants that are gluten free because of how hard it is to get lamination/flakiness with gluten free flour. It was overall a bit dense but had the same great flavor of a regular buttery croissant with chocolate filling! As mentioned in other reviews, the outside of the bagels are a bit tough/chewy but they are surprisingly light on the inside. They were well toasted and crispy. Needed to catch an amtrak back to NYC after spending a couple of days in DC with my friends and luckily we found Rise Bakery was located pretty closely to our Airbnb from Dupont circle. We walked to Rise and they were open pretty early around 9am! I ordered the Classic Sandwich and added avocado spread. The bagel had a good ratio to egg to bread and was very tasty on the everything bagel. It's so great how they have a selection of bagels and sweets and everything is gluten free!! My friend is gluten free and she also ordered banana bread which was sweet and moist. I usually am not a fan of gluten free desserts, but you can't tell at all! I also really liked the ambiance of the place. The staff was very welcoming and they had a post-it wall where you could write encouraging messages and show your support. Rise Bakery is in a great location and have fair prices and variety of foods. Updated: Okay, so they have definitely done improvements since I last visited this location. I had no intention on going back, but my dad surprised me with a loaf of the cinnamon raisin and one of the seeded breads. The cinnamon raisin is absolutely delicious and close to being sinful- I don't eat it in the morning, I have a slice or two as dessert. I'm obsessed. The seeded bread is okay, I still prefer a Queen St. Bakery item, but it's not bad. The bad-- their puff pastry items (croissant based). I'm not sure if they are trying to use a rough puff technique with gf flour, but it's not working. There's no way it could be the traditional method. I would recommend they decrease the dough and call their filled 'croissants' biscuits. There's is dense, so think biscuits if opting to try any of these. The service is greatly improved, all of the staff were pleasant. I don't expect to be catered to, but in the service industry, at least be cordial. They were all great, I could see it in the way they interacted with each other. It reflected in the atmosphere of the place. read more

On my last day of a long weekend in DC, my friend suggested this bakery for breakfast as I am gluten free. They live in Navy Yard so it was a bit of a hike but I don't have any gf bakeries near home so this was a worthy trek. Our first mission was to obtain breakfast sandwiches. I got the Fresh Start on an Everything bagel. It was pretty good, the bagel was a little dense and not crispy but I think it had more to do with the hummus and avocado weighing it down rather than the bagel itself. We walked around for a bit and returned at 12:01 to grab lunch and some goodies to go for the plane ride home. The sandwich was fantastic. Bread was soft, chicken and herb mayo tasty as well. That and the croissants I took held up well. I had a chocolate croissant the next morning and it was scrumptious. Pricing is up there, but Rise is a specialized bakery--so that goes with the territory. Their baked goods make life a lot easier for those with food restrictions. It's nice to have selection for many who don't have bakeries to choose from. The prices are mostly ok. I like picking up a few things for breakfast. It's also good for desserts. They have a small location next to Amsterdam Falafel. It has just one table where you can eat. This is a pick up and go kind of place. I think the prices are pretty good because it's a specialty bakery. The single serving items seem to be about $3 or so. I like the energy bar. They also can make cakes and bigger items. Bakeries can be good for breakfast or desserts. If you need something to be gluten free or vegan for either you can get it here. This is the only such bakery in DC that I'm aware of. read more
