An amazing restaurant. Goldilocks would eat here as it was just right in all aspects. Walked in and found a seat at the back counter (there were 3 or 4 tables inside and a counter). I got the cardamom bun and I also got the lamb meatballs from here and I was a little disappointed. It was not what I remembered from my prior adventures in Denmark. I think that I came here with very high expectations for it to completely match my experience of Study Abroad which I didn't. Eating here feels like getting a warm hug from a Finnish grandma you never knew you had, and never knew you needed. Mikko is an absolute MUST on cold days and evenings. Order a soup with grilled cheese. It's only $20 and it's a full meal and like all traditional soups, it's served at near boiling temps which is the way it's supposed to be! It's meant to be enjoyed slowly, over conversation, and will make you feel cozy from the first sip. I had the fish soup. Hype is real. Pirjo (rhymes with "Cheerio") is a gem and must be protected! An OK restaurant but overpriced and not the most selections for delivery. My friend and I recently ordered a weeknight dinner takeout from Mikko on DoorDash. We wanted to order from the dinner menu but we were told it was unavailable during the week-we were only able to order from the all-day menu. This menu misses some very good-looking dishes such as the soups, rostis, lamb, and pastas. My friend and I each ordered the gravlax open-faced sandwiches. While there was a generous amount of lox, the sandwiches were very small. The sandwiches were fine, although the lox was very salty and there was nothing to balance out the salt. read more

What can I say? This restaurant is absolutely adorable and the food is exceptional. There's limited seating inside but it was nice enough out that some groups dined outside. In addition to the Nordic cuisine on the menu, they also sell European sweets. Everything was tempting but I got the chicken schnitzel. My husband got beef and a side of mushroom soup. The soup was comforting and perfect for a chilly evening. My schnitzel was tasty and I hope to return to try one of the many fish dishes. The cocktails are unique but don't go for an Aquavit one unless you like the flavor of it. My husband didn't love his second cocktail but that was his own fault for getting something he might not like. I enjoyed both of my cocktails, one of which had pickle juice in it. I have never had Scandinavian food before, so Mikko's been on my list to try. My friend and I made a reservation for dinner yesterday. The interior is a bit small (a few 2-seaters and some bar seats). They also do happy hour every day from 4-7 PM, so this doesn't only apply to alcoholic drinks but also includes soups, too! TRADITIONAL FISH SOUP (WITH CLEAR BROTH) - 11 Normally it's 14, but the HH pricing was 11. Also, +5 for grilled cheese. The bowl was pretty big (larger than 16 oz. portion, I think) and filled with salmon. I was surprised by the amount of salmon in here, which was tender and not overly fishy. The clear broth was light and well-seasoned with herbs, definitely very comforting and perfect for a chilly October evening. There was also a good amount of potatoes, onions, carrots, and celery in here. This was good and I'd recommend. The grilled cheese had some thin rye bread that hit the spot and filled me up. It's not anything crazy and very much something you can make at home. My friend got the crawfish soup, which she enjoyed. I've heard good things about their brunch, so I'll have to return one day. On a cold January day, Mikko felt right. I've wanted to check this Nordic-Food spot out for months. Counter service is a quick way to order food and interesting to-go orders, pastries, and delicacies. I ordered the Swedish meatballs and I would say it was a great source of fuel and delicious! Seating is outside either just outside of the restaurant (wall opens up to reveal countertop) or in their covered dining area closer to the street. Food was exquisite. It is hard to name a favorite. This is a lovely little cafe/restaurant. When we went it was balmy and sitting in the outdoor seating felt good. they were running a special on Long Drink, which is a citrusy canned cocktail that is popular in Finland. I ordered the smoked salmon w poached egg open faced sandwich, which was tasty, though my friend's Gravlax one was better from the morsel he let me have. The chicken schnitzel with capers I've got was absolutely delicious, the side fries was so crunchy I loved it. I think it's the danish version of the classical German dish, but I thought it would be more typical danish if it were using veal (?) instead chicken(?) Pastries-- I have very mixed feelings. My friend and I got there pretty late for dinner, so after food when we asked I can still take a look at the pastries, they were taking them out of the wrappers. The cinnamon roll and cardamom bun that I got look a bit different (and burnt) from my impression of what they should look like --tasted okay. Karelian pie was interesting but a bit bland. But then again I haven't been to Scandinavian countries yet, so it's just my humble opinion. And I will update this review once visit Oh. Mikko: nested in a quiet DuPont circle residential neighborhood, the tiny colorful Nordic restaurant is more like a next door delicatessen. I haven't been able to travel outside the US for two years, so I decided to try world cuisine to whet my globe trotting appetite. I went to Mikko before noon, so it was quiet. The service was courteous but felt cold. The menu was written on a blackboard. The lunch prices were pretty reasonable. There were some prepared salads and bakery items at the counter. I decided to try 4*Bratwurst: the aroma of the fried sausage floated through my face mask; it was very good. The accompanying salad was fresh and clean, the honey mustard sauce was light. Also came with a big chunk of potato salad. Overall it was a simple but good lunch. There were lots of Nordic snacks. Not all prices were marked but most were pricey. I bought some, including 5*a tube of Kalles creamed smoked roe. It reminded me of Iceland where I had my first taste of roe years ago. 5*Canned Cod liver: I loved it - the texture and taste reminded me of Foi Gras, but it's not for everyone. 4*A loaf of house made seven-seed bread at $9: plain but healthy. I cut a few slices and put smoked roe and cod liver on top, perfect combinations. 4* Freia milk chocolate with chopped hazelnut: made in Norway, sweet and crunchy. 3*Geisha: a box of Finland milk chocolate with soft hazelnut filling. It contains 21 tiny wrapped pieces of chocolate candies. The flavor was light, hazelnut was unnoticeable. I think I could get similar stuff at cheaper prices. read more

In a word, this place is eclectic. There's a lot going on and it's a fun spot. It's been adding to its core business since its opening, in 2018. The menu is Scandinavian focused however if you aren't into Nordic cuisine, you'll still be okay because there's plenty of familiar continental foods for everyone's taste buds. I appreciate the "shop" and "bakery" (my quotation marks) that Mikko offers along with his restaurant. I can get imported lingonberry jam, dark breads and other prepared Nordic and European foods for my pantry (I'm Norwegian-American). The rhubarb-sour cream tart that's baked in-house is to die for, BTW. Just look at the display case and pick out some goodie that's made from scratch to take home; you really can't go wrong. I spoke with Chef Mikko one afternoon just recently as he was creating a myriad of plated foods, in the prep area behind the eat-in counter, found in the rear of the space. He's a hard worker, always trying to improve, conscientious of the local scene in which he has placed himself, wanting to please his customers. Candidly, I'm just happy this Nordic eatery is here. A cozy little visit to Finland. I had fish soup with the creamy broth (you can also get clear broth), and it was just the thing on a chilly afternoon. Most of the reviews here and on google are quite positive, but I read the rare negative ones just to see what the problem was, and they seem to be reacting to the cuisine itself more than to what this particular restaurant does. I've traveled around the Nordic countries, and some dishes are indeed an acquired taste. But everything I had was fresh, well-prepared, and all that fresh dill transported me north! Hugs to the staff, and thank you for making this little cafe a reality. I know that hygge is a Danish and Norwegian term, not really Finnish, and that Finns can give other Nordic countries the side-eye once in a while, but hygge is what I felt... that cozy sense of contentment and satisfaction, especially when it's cold outside. read more

I've walked past this restaurant a million times and decided to finally try it last night. The front & outdoor seating is so cute and the menu is very unique. I split 2 "small plates" ($10 each) with my friend-- the shrimp skagen with potato rosti & the herring plate. Both are SMALL-- I would recommend getting your own appetizers versus sharing since they taste so good and are so tiny. For entrees, I ordered the mushroom pasta (very creamy & salty). My friend ordered the lamb burger. We both enjoyed our food and will come back! Next time, I will probably order more of the small plates and then split an entree with someone. read more

This was my first time trying Nordic food, so I have to admit that I'm probably not the best judge of its quality or authenticity...even so, I was thoroughly satisfied by my meal here, and Mikko offered a great introduction to a new cuisine. We came here to celebrate a friend's 22nd birthday in summer 2021. Her family immigrated from Norway, so she has a special affinity to all things Nordic, and Mikko has been her favorite spot since coming to DC (and being deprived of her family's own Nordic cooking). From her recommendations, I decided to try the shrimp salad skagen open-face sandwich! The shrimp salad was served on multigrain toast with dill and a bit of lemon, and it was incredible. It was amazingly flavorful, yet simultaneously light and refreshing. All of the ingredients were remarkably fresh, and the simple presentation and dish allowed all of their natural flavors (and high quality!) to shine. I also bought one of their cardamom buns with lingonberry jam to try for breakfast the next morning, and it was delightful as well. Beyond the amazing food, Mikko's overall ambiance is incredible. We ended up eating outside because of the ongoing pandemic, but their outdoor seating is adorable. I only stepped inside briefly to wash my hands in the restroom, but the interior decoration is also incredibly homey and sweet.
