Friendly service, delicious treats! My only gripe is that they changed the way they do their chocolate and chocolate/almond croissants. They used to bake the filling in with the croissant and it was gooey and fresh. The last few times I've got them, though, it looks like they have been cutting old croissants and putting the filling in after the fact. The croissant itself was stale and dry, eliminating the goo-factor. Very disappointing! read more

This bakery is amazing and has perfected the gluten free croissant! Fortunately, I stopped in at what seemed to be the perfect time, no line, open seats, plenty of baked goods to choose from. I even had time to chat with the owner about the gluten free baking process and he gave me some recommendations for gluten friendly restaurants nearby. I traveled all the way from MD to support this new business and see if I could find the perfect spot to get a special treat. It was worth the trip, and I will be stopping in as often as I can. To those of you who have read the obnoxious 3 star reviews: please do not let what you have read influence you in any way. Visit the bakery, expect a wait, expect pastries to sell out, be patient, this place is worth the wait. There are a lot of people that need a place like this and negative reviews about long waits, no Splenda, and heavy bagels should not be considered when making a decision on whether or not to visit the bakery. read more

The ham and cheese croissant and the eclair are the stuff (gluten-free) dreams are made of. The croissant was appropriately flakey and buttery, the opposite of the typical dense, oily pastry brick most GF bakeries sell. My non- GF friend agreed the eclair was likewise magical - especially the vanilla creme. The bagels were also tasty (though a little smallish). Extra points for not having to heat them up in order for them to be edible! So nice for those of us who can't eat gluten to have access to high quality, grab and go breakfast! read more

On the opening day, my boyfriend and I went here and ordered 2 medium coffees, a croissant, a bagel w/cream cheese, and a Danish to go. Our wait was close to 40 minutes, longer than most. I originally ordered a strawberry coconut muffin, but was told they were not made yet; it was 11 am. I decided to order a croissant. I was a bit frustrated because the wait was so long and nothing was prepared yet except for chocolate chip cookies and refrigerated bread. Also, there was no Splenda, and no sugar to flavor our coffees so we had ours slightly bitter but flavored with a bit of almond milk available. There were only 4 tables with 8 seats total, whereas the line was around 20 people long. All the seats were taken by young parents of toddlers. We waited very long for the croissant and Danish. Even the lady behind the counter was surprised we chose to wait this long. However, the wait was worth it; my croissant was the perfect size and impeccably flavored and textured. My boyfriend was literally in culinary heaven with his bagel, noting that the cream cheese had a uniquely soft, creamy texture second-to-none. "Dear sweet holy mother." I actually said this out loud on the street after biting into a seriously buttery, flaky croissant. I have celiac disease and have only had one other GF croissant since I was diagnosed 4+ years ago. That other croissant was what we celiacs usually say about an ok-tasting GF item, "not bad for gluten-free!" But THIS. This was different. I called my husband and told him that this croissant was so good he would have taken a bite and just assumed it wasn't GF and would probably have said, oh I'm so sorry you can't taste this, babe. Tables turned, I said, Oh i'm so sorry you can't taste this, babe. I don't usually get to say that, so thank you, Rise Bakery for that rare opportunity! I'm so happy we finally have a gluten free bakery in DC! I went on the first day and it was absolutely fabulous. As someone with celiac disease, it's so incredible to actually have OPTIONS when it comes to baked goods. I tried the croissant, the fruit tart, cinnamon roll and the cookies. All four were fabulous. The croissant was a bit denser than a regular croissant but it's still the fluffiest gluten free version I've had. The cinnamon roll actually tasted like a normal cinnamon roll (accordingly to my non-celiac finace). A truly awesome bakery and I highly recommend it! read more

I went to Rise for the first time to pick up some goodies for a friend with Celiac disease who was celebrating a big birthday. I liked the funky and casual vibe of the place, along with the nice workers. The three stars I've given in my review reflects what seemed like hit-or-miss in the baked goods we sampled. Everyone in my party loved the flourless chocolate torte. However, the cupcake (ordered for a 9 year old at the party) was deemed inedible by just about everyone--somehow both dry and dense. The 9 year old had just about three bites of cupcake before pushing it away in favor of the torte. Everyone else tasted the cupcake and reached a similar conclusion. I also got a croissant for the birthday boy, and he gave it a rating of 'meh.' He said it tasted okay but that it did not give him the croissant experience that he has hoped for since going on a GF diet. In short, Rise has a nice vibe and offers baked goods that--at least in our limited experience--range from delish to yuck. read more

I'll be honest - when my fiance and i were looking to buy our condo, we were somewhat swayed to purchase in the Adams Morgan area because we heard this bakery would be opening soon. Rise Bakery did NOT disappoint. The food is delicious and the staff and owner are so friendly. Even better, the other customers are always willing to swap tips on gluten free eating in D.C.! AMAZING!!! i was SO looking forward to trying this bakery after reading it about. I live in NY where Gluten Free bakeries are available but i have NEVER found anyone who makes Gluten Free Croissants in addition to tasting AMAZING! i haven't had one since before i was diagnosed Celiac over 10 years ago so i can't describe how incredible it was! I had 3 people who are not gluten free try it and they couldn't believe how amazing it was. It felt just like a true French made croissant. Such a blessing to have this bakery in DC - for anyone who can't have gluten! I love that they have color coded symbols on everything to also make it clear if something also contains dairy, nuts or soy - so easy to decide what you can or can't have depending on your dietary restrictions and allergies. I was able to find a fruit bar there that is free of all 3 - gluten, dairy and soy, and it was super delicious too! Bread is sold frozen, but croissants, muffins and cookies are freshly baked. They also serve coffee, perfect to go with your gluten free chocolate croissant! :) well worth the trip! Parking is tough on the street, but just left of the bakery there's a parking garage, where you can park for half-hour for $3. read more

Friendly service and yummy treats! We didn't see the Paleo options, but we did order some sweet options for an afternoon pick-me-up. The red velvet cupcake was a bit dry, but the cream cheese frosting was perfectly tangy and cream-cheesy- none of the fake frosting flavor you often encounter, and the sweetness level was just right. The Nutella brownie was dark and fudgy, also not too sweet, and perfectly complemented by the crunchy hazelnuts on top. If our vote matters, the "Nutella" frosting layer could be a little more generous. We also had to try a croissant because we've yet to see anyone nail a gluten free version! The texture was a bit doughy- but there was a hint of the flakiness you hope to get in a croissant. The flavor had a hint of the good kind of sour you find in sourdough; the person who helped us told us it reminded her a bit of the Pillsbury rolls and she was right! Lovely place, great options. My husband was diagnosed as celiac 25 years ago, or as he says, before all the cool kids were doing it. In any event, baked goods have been hard to find, especially those that taste good. Not anymore. Rise Bakery understands that this isn't something true celiacs can mess with, and they are careful. So far, we have had their croissants, cakes, breads, bagels, and samosas and all are a treat. I highly recommend this place for anyone who is celiac or gluten free and their friends. read more

I think this place is best known for its croissants. I didn't think a GF croissant was possible. Here it is not only possible but good. Although it does leave me feeling like I just had way too much butter or sugar or something, and I do wish the chocolate kind came without powdered sugar on top, but I eat a pretty clean diet so I'm sure it's just me. I've had the chicken hand pie, which was good, a muffin--good for GF but flavor was just ok but I'm admittedly kind of picky about muffins--and a cherry pie, which was fine if you like cherry pie. I discovered I don't. So this place does really well with flaky crusty items. I don't expect the bagels to be good because I'm from NY and it was hard enough finding a good bagel around here when I wasn't GF. I would love to think that one day I will be able to find a great GF bagel though. By the way, I've always come here during off hours so I never had to wait. What I like most about Rise (aside from the Croissants) is that it is a perfect compliment to Happy Tart GF bakery in Alexandria. I was beyond excited when I heard Rise was opening a couple years ago, and I am still thrilled to be living near a gluten free bakery. Gluten free pastries are hard to come by in DC, and I'm often not able to eat anything in cafe's beyond a cookie or brownie - which are nice, but not always a substitute for a croissant or cupcake or muffin. Rise has been filling all of my pastry desires, and I stop by regularly to pick up the biscuits (Finally! I can enjoy biscuits and honey with my boyfriend!), the superseed bread, cookies, muffins, croissants, and more to my desire. Every time I go in, the staff is friendly and accommodating. The prices are a liiitle expensive, but nothing out of range for GF items, and still very much within the range of what I'm willing to pay when I just want a croissant. As for the items themselves, they are consistently delicious, although I find some things to be better than others. The biscuts and bread are awesome. 10/10 for the texture and taste. So are the cookies - they are chewy and buttery and have a faintly crisp edge, which I love. The muffins are also flavorful and don't have the gummy or dry crumbly texture that GF goods can have. My boyfriend, who is definitely not GF, loves their red velvet cupcakes, and usually buys one when we go, or requests one when I go alone. The eclairs are DELICIOUS. I am not even usually a fan of eclairs, and I love these. The croissants are the only thing that don't live up to their non GF counterparts. While the taste is buttery and rich, the texture isn't the normal flaky texture of a normal croissant. As another person mentioned, it has almost a dinner roll quality to it. However, it still tastes great and I still would eat it over not having a croissant at all when I want one. The only gripe I have is their hours. I live just far enough that I can't make it during the week, and I could get there in the morning if I left for work really early, but that never happens. My only option is to load up on the weekends, and freeze the pastries for the rest of the week. However, even if I didn't live relatively close, I would still go out of my way to come here! read more

My daughter is a student living in DC and has Celiac Disease, as do I. She recently turned 21, and I flew down to take her and her roommates out to dinner. I ordered a Birthday Cake from Rise. It was - seriously - the best chocolate cake any of us had ever had! Even the non gluten free among us loved it! Further, there had been a minor issue with the original order - which was supposed to be carrot cake. When I was told that that had soy in it, I had to change to the chocolate as there is also a soy allergy. The manager was so apologetic - and sent us a gift card. Super nice. I live in Boston.....would consider moving to DC for Rise Bakery! Five stars - even ten - all the way! read more

I can't even explain my excitement when I realized that Rise Bakery existed!! I went in and was just overwhelmed by the amazing options for a gluten free chica like myself. Visited Rise today after seeing recommendations for it on Facebook. We had breakfast sandwiches - one on a croissant and one on a biscuit. They were both very good, the croissant was so good I bought two more - I haven't had a croissant since I had to go gluten free 5 years ago. Also got a banana nut muffin (great), peanut butter cookies, ham and cheese croissant, cinnamon bun, chocolate croissant... went a little crazy. We haven't tried everything yet but so far it's all been great. Was very disappointed that they had just run out of bagels before we got there - the person sitting next to us got the last one and it looked really good. We live in Richmond but had been in Baltimore for the weekend, and it was worth the side trip to get there. Parking was a little challenging - we missed the entrance to the parking garage and ended up parking on the street several blocks away. Will definitely go back when I'm in the area. read more

I have been many times since they opened in November and tried most things (except cupcakes). Croissants are probably their best item, but can sometimes be gummy and undercooked or dense. But when they are done well they are flaky and delicious. Biscuits are also very, very good. They had gingerbread men during the holidays that were excellent. Bread is just OK, the baguette was like air, not substantial at all and not good for sandwiches. The sliced bread is also just mediocre. Wagshals does a better job there...Bagels were awful, like lead and weirdly salty. Muffins are also just OK. I appreciate having this place so I can pop in if I am craving a pastry or biscuit, I still think some recipes need to be tweaked, but if I were eating at a regular bakery the same would probably be true...hope they can keep this going! read more

Super sweet people, and also super sweet food. I would have loved to see some Sugar Free or Sugar Replacement options like Stevia or Agave. There were only a few items that were Nut Free and Vegan as well, however DELICIOUS and I spoiled myself. I think there is a lot of butter and sugar in the desserts FYI, but if you ask they are pretty up front about that. The customer service people were joyful and patient as I selected like a kid in the candy store what I wanted. So much Fun for me, the bakers were too! I loved the Cinnamon Roll, a childhood favorite which I hadn't eaten in years. For those who are not used to GF, the pastries seem like a little different from what they are used to, but for me who hasn't had anything closely resembling a Chocolate Croissant or Cinnamon Roll for years, Perfect TREAT and Delicious. Disappointing. I have heard good things about this place but every time I try to go they are closed or out of everything. Tried again today and menu was covered with post its saying most things were unavailable. At the counter I was told I could have the limited options or wait 15 minutes until they refreshed their sandwich items. When I asked what would be available if I waited (as I literally could not see the full menu) the cashier pointed back to what was currently available. I asked what would be available if I waited as they were restocking. She kept saying the same limited options. After three rounds of who's on first I left hungry, frustrated and disappointed.
