My wife and I just left the Human Comedy Show tonight and to stay in synch with the theme of the "comedians" asking the audience for a single word to jump start their performance, if there is one word to describe what we just experienced, it would irrevocably be PAINFUL! But first, let me recount the positives: 1) Small, but quaint and intimate performance room, which I found quite interesting and enjoyable for the event. 2) Free tap water. That's about it. No further positives. I was truly dumbfounded at how atrociously 'not funny' the 2 hour experience was :((( After having exceptional experiences in Portland, OR and Seattle, WA at the improv shows, I had high expectations for another great night out. But to my disillusional dismay, we found only one moment in the unremittingly painful 2 hr evening to modestly snicker at. Seriously! The comedians all seemed like great people, but I can only hope that they all have backup career plans. With only minimal exaggeration, I think I had more fun taking my calculus final than sitting through this lamentable attempt at comedy :( You know you're in for a long night of unpardonable "comedy" when you find yourself struggling to stay awake within the first 15 minutes, with my wife's head peacefully sleeping on my shoulder before the first act ended! Needless to say, we bolted out of there at the first opportunity we had and headed to Applebee's to quell the disappointment with a delicious chocolate brownie and ice cream dessert;-) read more

Improv fun! I enjoyed a show last week and LOVED the quaint theater! Easy to hear performers, great visual access and lighting! The bar in the lobby is super nice and the bartender was CUTE! Woohoo! Makes a drink taste even better! Great price for the show (free!) and excellent drink prices! Can't wait to go back! read more

My boyfriend and I were looking for something to do in Denver and found this place. I thought it was a stand up comedy but instead they acted out the comedy. They were great and I had some laughs! I gave them four stars because although they were great, the place got packed up really quick and it was a little hard to find seating. read more

I recently held a Sales Kick Off for my company and invited Steve from Voodoo Comedy to lead a session on improv to help our sales team focus more listening, communication and, most importantly, being present. After completing session, my only reaction is WOW! The energy Steve was able to bring to the team and the level of engagement from our sales team was incredible! Everyone had an amazing time and even a few days after the session, I have been consistently hearing our sales team use and remind others of techniques Steve taught us. Went a few weeks ago with a group. Very dissapointed. Paid like $6 for a Jack and Coke and not sure what happened with Jack... A friend got a specialty drink and thankfully, she got alcohol in it. Seating in this place is terrible. They pack you in like a sardine and there is no place to put your drink. Seats don't even have arms. The seating layout is really terrible. It isn 't stadium or graduated in any way. The stage is like 2' off the floor. So even at 6' 1", I couldn't see the actors when they were seated. So unless you are in the first three rows, good luck!!! They allow late comers to join at any time. Even 1/2 an hour into a performance. The performance itself was okay. The actors really put effort into it. It was not enough to make up for the horrid layout. Really, this is just a money-maker for the owner. I'd stay at home nex time.... read more

This place is awesome. Denver has a lot of improv talent for a smaller city, but never really had a club-style venue. Voodoo does what it does right, and it seems to be getting better each time I go. Last time I was here it was packed on a Monday night, so it wasn't even the cheap drinks that were getting people into the seats. read more

We went on a Saturday night and had a blast. It's cheap, funny, and walking distance to a few other cool spots (which makes it a great way to start the night). They had a decent selection of bottled craft beer for about $4-5 a bottle. We saw 4 shows. Makeshift Shakespeare and Hit & Run were the funniest, but we had a lot of good laughs at all 4 shows. For how cheap the tickets are, it makes for a fun night that is a little different - great for those days when just sitting at a bar with friends drinking won't cut it. A Whose Line Is It Anyways ripoff where you pine for Drew Carey jokes? I never want to pine for Drew Carey. NO THANKS. I was completely done with Denver improv shows.BUT THE VOODOO IS DIFFERENT. That place is more about great comedy and less about creating shows based on current trends. I've seen 40 minute two man shows that I wish would have lasted longer, huge house teams that worked together flawlessly, and just damn beautiful improv performed there. There is nothing else like it. Escape the bar scene and come in for a drink and a show. The staff is lovely and the place has a relaxed cool vibe. read more

I went the same night as the person who gave one star and have no clue how they gave Voodoo Comedy one star!!?? It was great! The actors did very well for improv. I was in from Phoenix and saw that it was sold out but took a shot and called to see if I could get in. They were great and very accomodating. The food was delicious. The beef was good and so was the chicken. Parking was a bit tricky I wish there would have been someone in the lot alittle earlier. I would recommend highly and go back again. Person with one star must have been at another place. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT! read more

I visited Voodoo Comedy Playhouse for a Friday night improv and what a show it was! I came for the improv musical and was amazed by how quick witted, funny, and professional it was. It is a real talent to make up such a long musical from scratch. Great job! Next time I'm in town I'll be sure to come again. read more

Lizz and Amanda led an amazing, fun, energetic, and high impact team-building and communication workshop with our school leaders and administrators for HOPE Online Learning Academy. The basic improv tenants of "yes, and", listening, building off each other, having fun, and supporting each other was applicable to student and parent engagement and daily interactions with colleagues. Totally recommend for corporate, nonprofit, group, youth team-building that's tremendously participative and engaging. read more

It started out with the guy redeeming all of my Groupons instead of just the two for the Voodoo Comedy Lounge. Also the drinks were overpriced. I had a large party which I had called and discuss previously and they never saved our seats as they had promised this made the night NOT as planned and put a damper on my milestone birthday. The show was subpar. They over booked the venue...nothing but standing room in the lounge had to leave after one show normally my group stays for all the acts. I have been coming here for years and NEVER will be coming here again. They have really put a fowl taste of how a person should be treated. This is NOT customer service nor is it satisfaction. You'll laugh until you cry... this place is great fun, very affordable (both admission and drinks) and the staff is super friendly.

I really like this place. Warning, if you are expecting more of a Comedy Works type of place, turn around. This place offers a great alternative to that. Tickets are very inexpensive and usually after purchasing a ticket you get a drink ticket. There are NO drink minimums, which is AWESOME. Some shows are hit or miss...but that's improve for you. You cannot go wrong with their one hour LMAO Standup Showcase. Also, if you buy a ticket that gets you into the other shows that night. Street parking, but hey...that's downtown. If you need a break from the comedy section, they have seating at their bar, which is very much the neighborhood dive that often goes overlooked. The staff is all friendly, can't say enough positive things about this place! read more

Visiting and thought we'd give it a try...have gone to really small intimate improv like this before and really enjoyed it...the first one, Tax March, was pretty terrible and painful to watch but The Agency with the guest stand-up comedians was great and then the improv after wasn't as bad as the first but not that good...decided maybe we stick to stand-up when we come back to Denver and forget improv in the future...not sure I can recommend this place even though it was friendly. read more

My first time here was my birthday a few years ago. Makeshift Shakespeare was amazing and they even worked my name into the skit. I was the one who called out the theme "My Mustang is Awesome" and it is still my favorite improv skit that I've seen. Since then we have gone back probably 20 times for various birthdays and we always have such a a blast! The comedy is usually hysterical and even when it's not we still have fun chatting with the players at the bar. Someday I hope to get the to go to the improv classes. Oh my, this was an evening of torture. Saw Hitchcocktails last night. First of all, the title is a misnomer. Other than the Psycho violins playing when they stab someone, there is nothing even remotely Hitchcockian about this. There's also nothing even remotely funny. It was like watching a bunch of witless 7 year olds who forgot to take their Ritalin as they wander around and all try to talk at once. On the upside, the bartender pours a strong drink. You'll need several to get through the performance. read more

I'll say off the bat that I am not a karaoke person, however, I am going to try to acknowledge this from the POV of my friends who *are* karaoke people. Ok. We decided to check out the Voodoo Comedy Playhouse this weekend for a girls night out. We showed up for the "Distort Report" improv show at 10, and stayed for the karaoke that starts at 11 until 2 am. Signage around the place was adequate to ensure we weren't parked in the wrong spot, that we were at the right spot, and so on. We walked in, got checked in (some of us had to buy tickets, some of us already had purchased ahead) and headed to our seats. The show started right at 10, which means we didn't get a chance to get a drink, and the doors were closed for the show, with no table service. The "Distort Report" was an improv show pulled from local headlines. The show starts off with a brief intro of the cast, the concept, and a plug for their improv classes, then things got started. The improv was not the best I've ever seen, and while there were some funny lines, it was not top notch humor. If you're used to places like Second City, or acts like Upright Citizens Brigade, these guys were a few notches down from that. They need a little work, and a little more cohesiveness. The transition between participants left a bit to be desired in the "Tap out" method - story lines didn't flow well, and the work was just a little weak. The evening wasn't very busy (only 7 audience members) which may have been part of the problem. However, it was only $5, so no one really felt ripped off, just "meh" about the improv portion of the night. After the 1 hour improv show, the room changed over to a karaoke room. There are 5 tables with 7-8 chairs at each one, and a small stage with monitors placed around the room. The Emcee for the evening was excellent, and did a great job keeping the crowd circulating through the playlist. It wasn't terribly busy (maxed out at 20 or so people) with only 12 or so actively singing, so anyone who wanted to sing got a chance. However, some of the improv actors and bar staff appeared to think of it as a time to goof off, and perform terribly bad karaoke. It made it a little disappointing for those who actually wanted to get up, to sing well, and to enjoy it. I'm not saying that a bad performance isn't appreciated, but at a certain point, hamming it up just becomes screwing around with an in-joke with a few of your friends, leaving the rest of the crowd feeling like they're interrupting something. However, we were able to perform enough times that it kept us there till closing time. I cannot comment on prices at the bar, because I had only one drink, and someone else paid for it. However, the bartender apparently needed some assistance looking up the recipe for my terribly complicated vodka gimlet (vodka + rose's lime). They were serving Moscow mules, complete with tin cup, though, so....YMMV. Overall, it's a 3 out of 5. I wasn't blown away, but I wasn't completely offended. My friends got to sing a bunch, and I enjoyed seeing them enjoying themselves. The place is a little dive-y, but it's also not obnoxiously crowded, so if you want to sing, you'll get a chance. about 80% of the performers were actually quite talented, so it wasn't the most god-awful experience of karaoke ever. The improv needed work, but the price was fine. 1. Customer service was excellent. Quick response to email questions, and speedy check in at the door. Brief explanation of what to expect, and when one of the staff/performers spilled his beer on my friends, he bought them each a drink. 2. The place isn't much in terms of a bar/scene. Black box theater, small stage, chalkboard covered tables, and popcorn machine. It is bare bones, but it's cheap. 3. It felt safe enough. There wasn't any sort of rough element that made a group of girls a sitting target for inappropriate behavior. 4. A few of the staff/performers were obnoxious, but they probably think of it as "their" place - a vibe that's understandable, but can rub paying customers the wrong way. 5. The karaoke DJ was fantastic, and did a great job keeping the crowd energized, including some of his own performances in the lineup. And he did well at them. So...bottom line: Go, with low expectations. read more

Visited for the first time this summer and really enjoyed myself. Drinks were good and reasonably priced. Everyone was super friendly and the comedy was good. Lots of amateurs who were really good! My only small complaint is that I didn't realize that I only had to pay for 1 show to see all of them-I ended up paying for 2 shows, which was only $10 so not a big deal, but good for those first timers to know! Had a great time at this quaint comedy theatre just blocks from Coors Field. Went on a Friday night and wasn't disappointed with the funny improve shows given by the talented comedians. The shows last about 45 minutes and there were different themes for the shows. The drinks were reasonably priced and the staff is friendly and helpful. The bar area has some cool things to look at while chatting with the comedians who like to hang out and grab a drink with the patrons. Great show and good date spot. read more

this is one of the saddest places I have been in Denver over the last 2 years. A group of five of us bought tickets to their new years eve party expecting tons of crazy festivities. We walked out after 15 minutes because what we found were senior citizen burlesque dancers, no comedy on stage, a tiny space to walk around in and not because it was crowded, and 1 bartender trying to serve a line of 30 to 40 people. Oh and half the bar was already sold out by 930. We ended up going to Beauty Bar and having a totally fabulous time. read more

If you keep your expectations low, then you'll be in for a treat. This little comedy club is blocks away from the rescue center, so it is a little shady in this part of the town. However, after we were able to find some street parking we went in. The stage area is small, but it was fine because you can pretty much get a good view anywhere you sit. They have a bar to order drinks. Sometimes after the shows, there is karaoke, which can be fun. read more

Okay, this review is coming to you from over a year and a half ago after actually seeing the show, so forgive me if my details are hazy. I believe that a friend of a friend acquired our tickets online with a discount which came out to ten or twenty dollars. There's meter street parking and we paid for three hours. My friend was already buzzed when we got there around 8pm (don't worry, someone else drove), but since I had just turned 21, he bought me my first alcoholic drink, which turned out to be a Long Island Iced Tea. Now, I lied slightly when I said it was my first drink because I had had a few Malibu 8oz cans on my 21st and a shot of something else I can't remember, but hey, alcohol isn't my thing, so I urged him not to waste his money. But he did and from the first sip, I knew that there was no way I was getting through a 24oz glass of this stuff (the bartender had absolutely packed on the alcohol, so you couldn't even taste the Coke). I sipped it throughout the show, but in the end, my buzzed friend had to down it for me and suffered a severe hangover for it but I warned him... Anyway, to the show. I was naive and had no idea what a burlesque show even was, so here I am, wondering what I'm going to see when "Oh, Yeah" comes up on the speakers and I see a woman dancing around the stage, slowly fighting to take her clothes off and I think--, "Oh, lord." Yep, this was actually happening. I had a very PG-rated mind. I mean, I'm talking extra virgin olive oil, so to see this, it was a bit of a shock, but once I got into the groove of things, I was able to enjoy myself as around five gals came out to different 80s music (it was a theme night) and did their thing. At break, a rather raunchy comedian came out and since I was lucky enough to be sitting front row, dead center, I was the prime victim, but it was all in good fun. The second round of ladies came out and at the end, they all joined together to dance to the more modern, "Sexy and I Know It". Afterwards, they had karaoke, which was my cue to leave. Overall, I think that if I were to come back, I would enjoy it more since now I know what to expect, though the combination of alcohol and shock were big factors made the experience a bit adult, but you've gotta grow up sometime. I don't know the lady's name who ran the show, but she was an absolute sweetheart and helped me get over some of that shock when I told her I had no idea what to expect. read more

The Voodoo Comedy Playhouse is a great place for great comedy. Quite simply, it is the cream in my coffee, the salt in my stew, the sail of my loveboat. Seriously, the best-of-the-best performers are all you are going to get when you see a show at the Voodoo. You shouldn't come to just one show at the Voodoo, you need to see them all! $8 for a night full of comedy? Come on, guys, that's a deal. This place wasn't what I expected at all. It's pretty run down. We saw the LMAO show and although some of the comedians were funny, some were just awful. One guy was so drunk/high he couldn't even remember his routine. He was spilling his drink everywhere and eventually got cut short. The seating area was pretty small, which I guess is good and bad. Some of the comedy was pretty edgy, which I didn't really care about, but some people might. With all the comedy clubs in Denver, this can't be the best one. I wouldn't go back. read more
